Secondary Schools Principal IV Dr. Moises C. Cabida, Jr. warmly welcomed everyone in the Kick Off Ceremony of this year’s Brigada Eskwela with the theme, “Brigada Eskwela: Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik Aral” through an audio clip held at Nabua National High School (NNHS), Nabua, Camarines Sur, on

that Brigada Eskwela is not only about cleaning, but also a time to give importance to values formation.

She reminded the students to keep a few things in mind, to give importance to what is actually important, and to reassess their priorities. She also hoped that the learners will not forget about good manners, and that everything the teachers, parents, and other stakeholders do are all for them.

She took her time to remind the teachers to pay attention to the instilling of good values on the students even through small talks.

“Hindi mahalaga ang talino, hindi napakahalaga ng skills, kasi napag aaralan pero ang magandang ugali ito po ay nagsisimula sa mga tahanan ninyo kasi ang brigada hindi lang ito paglilinis, ito rin ay pag re reflect mag reflect tayo. Ano kaya ang mangyayari sa akin ngayong taon, lalo na itong mga mag aaral. ‘Ano kaya ngayong taon [makapagtapos] ako [nang] walang sagabal sa aking pag aaral?’ So, itong mga katanungan na ito ang dapat bigyan pansin [niyong] mga mag aaral,” she added.

Nopre then ended her speech with a goodluck wish on the upcoming blended face to face classes on August 22, 2022 and that hopefully, on November 2022, it will then be full face to face

The Nabua National High School (NNHS) conducted the Parents’ Rabus for Grades 7 and 8 for the 2022 Brigada Eskwela on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, after its official kick off the daybefore.

As early as 7:00 AM, parents and students started to line up at the information desk as volunteers. With more than hundreds of volunteers, the difference between this year’s Brigada Eskwela s was evident.

’ Rabus highlighted the collaborative efforts among parents, students, teachers, and non teaching staff of the said school to encourage a safe learning environment in prepopening of classes. Volunteers made various efforts such as floor waxing, lawn grass removing, floor sweeping, and comfort room

Mrs. Jill A. Docot, the class adviser of 7 Aster, commented that school cleaning in this year’s Brigada Eskwela was easier compared to last s since there were more volunteers and

Mrs. Myra Llorin, a parent of a 7 SOC 1 student, said that the Brigada was tiring, but it was overall okaysince she got to meet the other parents.

A Grade 7 Aster student, Faye Angiely Penio, took a similar approach when she said that the Brigada was fun as it allowed her to meet her classmates for the first time. Asked about what she feels about the upcoming face to face classes in November, she said she feels happy as the situation is finally getting back to normal.

The Parents’ Rabus was more noteworthy now that limited face to face classes of Science Oriented Curriculum (SOC) and Special Program in the Arts (SPA) will resume on August 22, 2022.

Moreover, the schedule of Group 1 in TVL classes in Senior High School will be every Monday and Tuesday, while Group 2 will be ona Thursday Fridayschedule.

Even though other classes will still make use of the modular learning modality, Mr. Albania clarified that more classes will ‘gradually’ shift to in person classes in the early on set of theschoolyear, untilthe institution reaches its full implementation in all levels on November 2, 2022.

As the opening of in person classes draws near, literacy has become the main focus of the Department of Education Regional Office V (DepEd ROV) in the school year’s Learning Recovery and Continuity Plan (LRCP) as presented by Mr. Jeffrey S. Albania, Nabua National High School (NNHS) Senior High School Coordinator, during the 2022 Brigada Eskwela kick off on Monday, August 15, 2022, at the NNHS Civic Center. Brigada Pagbasa became the main highlight of the LRCP as DepEd adheres to one of its mottos, “Walang batang maiiwan.

that are yet to have a face to face), puwede na sila na doon muna sa blended learning (they can, in the meantime, use blended learning) sa ibang modalities na kung saan ay makakapagpatuloy at makakapag aral pa rin ‘yong bata (in other modalities wherein the child will still continue and study).”

It is not inclusive to jump hastily with both feet into the full implementation of in person classes. What is inclusive is understanding that we are putting limits to gradually build the toughest blocks there are to provide what is best for all. No one will be left out; no string will

The question is, will it actually make lasting changes in the literacy of the Filipino people, or will it be one of those sweet talks left to spoil?

Arguments arose stating that for the said program to immediately solve illiteracy in the country is a long shot. Students in the program may end up being left out as they step a stair only for the next step to be an empty pit. Not to mention that according to the plan, limited face to face classes will only be implemented in certain curriculums, the Science Oriented Curriculum (SOC) and Special Program in the Arts (SPA) for Junior High School and Technical Vocational Learning (TVL) strand for Senior High School, thus a diversion from the rail of the supposed “inclusive education” that DepEd kept on pushing.

Solving such a huge problem, however, will always take a gradual pace; it is not something that can be immediately solved. We can not build a house in one day, only for it to cave in the next day. The solution that DepEd provided does not end with a one day Brigada Pagbasa as there will be policy guidelines to ensure the long and fruitful running of the aforementioned program. Every student will have complete stairsteps to land on.

“Regular na pagbisita sa mga mag aaral (Regular visit to students). Hindi pa rin nawawala po ang regular home visit (Regular home visit is still here). Magpatupad ng mga paraan para makagawa po tayo ng mga nararapat na gawaing pagtataya (Implement ways to create proper assessment tasks) or mga tinatawag po natin na (what we call) assessment tasks,” Mr. Jeffrey said on his presentation speech.

In addition, DepEd will continue to stay true to its motto and establish inclusive education across all curriculums by providing different options of learning to ensure that every student gets a quality education. Mr. Jeffrey Albania clarified in an inte view that we must understand that the institution is just following the DepEd order and that the full implementation of in person classes is still on November 2, 2022.

“Ngayon, paano natin masasabi na kahit papaano ay magiging pantay pa rin tayo sa iba (Now, how can we say that to whatever extent, we will still be equal to others)? Isang option din ‘yon na nakapaloob sa DepEd order na yong mga antas na hindi pa rin [magkakaroon ng face to face] (It is an option enclosed in the DepEd order that those levels

need to be soothed.

Perhaps we are surrounded by thick clouds of doubts, and that is okay, but when it is evident that the goal is for the betterment of our country’s youth, it is time we check if we are on the right side. To not give an equal education to students is wrong. To delight in the weaknesses of our fellow countrymen is an added weight to our country’s problem. With what the country is doing right now, we can hope that instead of literacy, the infamous phrase, “wala ka bang comprehension?” will be the one to decline and that gradually, torn pages of hope shall be glued together for every Filipino child to read this time, with great comprehension.

In the past two years, I remember how limited the movement was for the Brigada Eskwela but now than we've gradually adjusted to the pandemic, it felt like going back to my days as a student in her first year of junior high school.

The 2022 Brigada Eskwela was both a familiar and new experience for me. Seeing the many students, parents, teachers, and volunteers scattered in the spacious grounds of the campus tugged the nostalgia buried deep in my heart. Doing it again came with a realization of how deep the connection it sewed within the community, transcending the lost time in those two years.

However, a tinge of unfamiliarity lingered amidst the

familiar sight. Although the conventional activities completed the event, the addition of activities like the Fun Run Marathon made its flow seem much newer.

Lastly, with the long halt that progressed for almost two years, the sense of volunteerism that I've seen even in the past Brigada Eskwelas, felt stronger and livelier. To me, it felt like the excitement of the participants bounced off into the environment.

“Wala ka bang comprehension?” is a common insult in the Philippines an address of a literate to an illiterate. This insult is no less prevalent than illiteracy in the country. That is to say, there is a reason for this infamous phrase and that reason is that the decline of literacy is a real thing in our society.

Modular and online education have been the modalities of learning NNHS has been utilizing for more than two years now. Even though some classes have already shifted to in person classes, the rest still make use of the aforementioned learning modalities.

On Friday, September 8, 2022, a student run Facebook page named ‘NNHS Top List’ posted a sent confession from one of the students of the school. In the Facebook post, the sender ranted about those teachers who allegedly give their modules to be answered only the night before the submission at school.

“…nahihirapan din po kami lalo na sa part na akala namin makakapag rest na kami kasi okay na tapos na. Then maya maya meron pa pala, tapos ang mahirap pa do’n, [ibibigay ang mga sasagutan] kung kailan deadline na o malapit na [ang] pasahan,” the post reads.

To resolve situations like this, I believe that both teachers and students must follow the basic “netiquette.” One of which is that no academic related messages should be sent by the teacher nor by the students during late night around 9:00 or 10:00 PM to respect each other’s time and space. It is a common demeanor to avoid sending chats this time of the night since it is already a lotted for rest of everyone.

The NNHS Pencil

However, emergencies are exempted to this rule of thumb. Some may argue that there must be no time frame for sending academic related messages since it is incomparable to formal class hours. That may be true on some point, but we should note that we also must practice professionalism both at school and at home, once again, to respect each other’s time.

Another issue mentioned in the confession post was about the late sending of instructional materials and activity sheets. In my opinion, teachers who give modules late should also allow their students to submit late, too. It is because learning and answering what is printed in a module takes time to absorb and do, respectively.

This kind of problem can be better solved by talking to our teachers and ask them to extend the deadline. There’s nothing wrong negotiating for the last day of submission especially if you have a valid reason to do so. Solving problems peacefullyis always worth trying for. Furthermore, we should be considerate to the time of other people. As what an old saying goes, “let us treat othersthewaywe want to be treated.?

The Pledge of Commitment the Commitment Wall was one of the activities that signified the start of this school year’s Brigada Eskwela themed “Brigada Eskwela: Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik Aral.” Several stakeholders and teachers signed their names and left brief messages to convey their show of support to Nabua National High School (NNHS) in the opening program held August 15, 2022, Monday, at theCong. Sal Fortuno CivicCenter.

Based on the theme, the objective of the said commitment wall is to showcasethe signatures of the representatives from DepEd Camarines Sur, LGU Nabua, GPTA, Brgy. San Miguel, NNHS teachers, and other stakeholder, their fullest dedication to the aim for a healthy and risk free NNHS environment before the school year 2022 2023 begins.

“Magsisilbi yun na motivation natin. Dapat bilang guro, isa tayo sa pinaka role model na dapat maisagawa natin kung ano ang mga inaasahan natin ngayong Brigada. Kami sa Filipino Department, yung Brigada Pagbasa ang main focus namin para ma develop o malinang ang kakayahan ng mga mag aaral sa pagbabasa,” a response from Ma’am Susan A. Monje, the department head of NNHS Filipino Department, when asked about the purpose of establishing the Commitment Wall and the official plans of their department in this year’s Brigada Eskwela.

Aside from enhancing the reading and comprehension skills of Grade 7 students, she also encouraged the pupils and co teachers to volunteer in any way they can, such as by simply cleaning the classrooms and facilities or by contributing hygienekits for thestudents.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Bella S. Oraa, the

department head of theMAPEH department, who was also the coordinator of the previous school year’s Brigada Eskwela and serves as a consultant for this year’s implementation of the aforesaid event, wrote her own marks of support on the Commitment wall.

When asked in an interview for her thoughts and whether the above stated activity has been a tradition even in the previous years, she stated,

Yes. For me, it is a tradition, kasi last year meron din tayong wall of support pledge of support and that is a manifestation of support na talaga it comes from the heart, kasi once na nagpirma ka diyan, meaning to say, you are committed to support the school, especially kapag maging conducive siya. Manifestation of support talaga yan, once na nagpirma ka diyan.”

Much like the written manifestation of support, she expressed that she considers herself as an internal stakeholder with her being a member of the NNHS family and that her role seeks to give a hand to the school in the implementation of the gradual in person classes, to monitor teachers, most especially advisers from the MAPEH department, in setting forth the actual clean up activities with the parents, regarding the cleaning and improvement of their assigned areas, and to suggest plans for the improvement of the

Implementing an event like Brigada Eskwela is not easy. It takes weeks and months to prepare for the full blown program from organizing, consultations, time management, and communication. For Sir Perez and Mrs. Penolio, the coordinator and co coordinator respectively, for this year’s Brigada Eskwela, these are only some of the things that had to be given utmost attention. Several meetings of verifying, validating, and consulting became a task that led both teachers two steps ahead in their preparation.

they have managed to check all of their duties from the planning, to the meeting with the committees, to asking donations from various institutions, alumni associates, and fraternities. All of which were attained before the official start of the Brigada Eskwela.

"Actually, very short notice po yung ibinigay sa amin. Siguro, hindi nga one month yung preparation namin. Sabi ko nga, ang teacher ay adjustable, [at] flexibleang timeng teachers."

Both teachers have worked closely together resulting in activities held smoothly and problem free. They have also shared their thoughts and expectations on the two week long event, now that the opening of in person classes is set for this school year.

everyday po nami meet po yung objectives namin for theBrigada Eswela."

She expressed her warmest gratitude to all the people who made this successful, from the Governor down to the Local Government of Nabua. Likewise to the stakeholders, the parents, the learners, the teachers, and the community. "Aasahan namin po kung saka sakali ma extend yung term namin ni Sir Ryan as coordinators, same ang ibibigay nilang cooperation sa ginawa po nila ngayong taon. “

Mr. Ryan Perez, this year’s BE coordinator, on the other hand, shifts focus to the objective of helping the Administration, the teachers, the students, as well as the parents in preparing for the upcoming in person classes especially that the threat of COVID 19 still exists.

“How do you think this event bring forth a unified community of students, teachers, volunteers, etc.?”

They said they had to regularly check and plan meetings with the school principal, the department heads, and the committees to arrive at a better plan and implementation strategies.

However, the work doesn’t stop there. Coordinating with stakeholders must be constantly doneto tap their support.

Following a set of tasks, but with a limited set of time, Mrs. Penolio explained how

Mrs. Penolio hopes for an outcome with fully cleaned areas, classrooms that are more conducive to learning, and the immediate rehabilitation of particular infrastructures damaged during typhoons. She further expressed how overwhelmed she is in regards to the things that she has observed in the event and in the on going activities.

"Super na o overwhelm kami kasi ang mga parents ay pumupunta lahat. ‘Di ba yung cooperation ng mga parents and yung other institutions na ininvite namin pumupunta din po sila. Nag e extend po sila ng help nila, so I guess

“It promotes the spirit of volunteerism, we all know that volunteerism the parents are coming here, they extend their services. Not only the parent, but the students, our top stakeholders and donors.” Sir Perez stated.

Lastly, and most importantly, the thing that binds and powers through this whole event, according to his is volunteerism.

Indeed, volunteerism sets a sense of connection. It has different facets and familiarity. So familiar when it appears on busy halls with students and parents carrying papers and boxes, cutting grasses, sweeping floors, landscaping gardens, and still smiling and enjoying what they are doing. It is so complex with the way it is manifested. How people, even with the amount of effort that comes with it, don't hesitate.

Mr. Ryan T. Perez and Mrs. Barbara Penolio, alongside the many people who worked with them, have lit a sparkler; igniting the sense of volunteerism, fostering friendship and setting Nabua National High School as a light that guides parents and students of Nabua.

A CANVAS AND A SMILE. Dr. Lourdes R. Nopre, Public Schools District Supervisor, and Mr. Ryan T. Perez, B.E. ‘22 Coordinator, give their smiles alongside their signature on the commitment wall as part of the program of this year’s Brigada Eskwala. Zumba instructors Betervo and Rebangcos show-off moves

Who would have thought that teachers could be dancers with finesse?

This was the scenario at the kick off program for ’22 Brigada Eskwela, August 15, this year. Energized teachers from the different departments showed off dancing skills imitating the moves from Zumba instructora Marvin Betervo and John Jerome Rebangcos.

Being teachers, their moves were calculated to the point of perfection. Thanks to the indefatigable Marvin and John Jerome.

How did they become dancers of this caliber?

Let’s find out straight fromthe horses’ mouth.

Marvin Betervo and John Jerome Rebangcos, Zumba instructor, share their moves as they led the teahers of Nabua National High School on Zumba fitness dancing at Cong. Sal Fortuno Civic Center .

“Kahit nasa work ako pag weekdays, kapag weekends nagsu zumba class ako para hindi ko mapabayaan yung katawan ko and at the same time nakakapag share pa ako nung talent ko sa ibang tao tulad sa mga ganitong evenets,” Betervo said.

He also stated that dancing I important to a person’s health as it maintains a good body composure and make our brains active.

“Noong nagbrigada, yung zumba ay isang gawain na nakapagbigay sigla sa lahat ng empleyado at sa amin na mga guro ng NNHS. Syempre, isa rin itong paraan para mawala ang ’ stress' namin,” Mrs. Margie Romualdo, TLE department head commented.

In addition to this, Mrs. Shiela Layosa, a Junior Hish School (JHS) Math teacher, mentioned that she feels good after joining the Zumba.

“Energized, na relieved yung stress and masaya’, Mr. Jovan Oliveros, a Senior High School (SHS) teacher, also shared his experience. The 30 minute dancing was surely not enough as the teachers were still raring to go and enjoying the upbeat music.

No event becomes successful without its guiding forces the ones working behind the scenes to make it all happen.

In the two years of adjusting to the pandemic, limited assistance was the only thing that could be offered in the presence of strict restrictions and the absence of the students in the actual school grounds. Now, on the other side of the opening of in person classes, stood the guidance team which seeks to relive the security and comfort that its platform had long provided.

In fact, the recently concluded event, entitled Parent Power: A Session on Mental Health Awarenessfor Parents, which served as a ground for access to information, was facilitated and prepared by the Guidance Counseling office further proving their zeal towards their advocacies.

Throughout an entire movie, the actors and actresses dominate the big screen. In a musical play, it is a sequence of singers and actors that appear on stage. In a concert, it is everyone’s favorite performers seen until the end. In every event, the front personas of the program are admired. But at the start, it is the staff behind the scenes that made it all possible.

A glimpse behindthe curtains.

The Torchbearer.

Like a director in a movie, Mrs. Rose Angeline Vargas Bayrante, Guidance Counselor III,

created her own harmonious masterpiece following her duty to spearhead the event on mental health awareness.

She has been with Nabua National High School (NNHS) for five years now. Like most people, years of practicing one’s passion becomes a great milestone. Now, another feat is thrown into her treasure chest of achievements. Aside from spearheading the event, she was also accountable for its conceptualization.

Before going into implementing an event no lane would have ever existed without the driving force of conceptualization. It’s a mental process of seeing the entirety of the program even before it is actually created; it is organizing tons of ideas, factors, and hopes all centered in one advocacy. A creative process that she wandered through, meticulously in full detail.

The Overseer.

Alongside the torchbearer is one who stands like a watcher intently processing the intricacies of the game that is Ms. Aubrey.

Aubrey S. Pili is the Guidance Coordinator II of NNHS. Since 2017, Ma’am Aubrey as she is fondly called, has been working as the team’s Guidance Coordinator II. A duty that was well exercised even in the Parent Power event. Her role was to supervise, monitor, and to evaluate the

execution of the activities, which she did excellently.

As supervising is no easy job, it is highly misunderstood.

Others might perceive that supervising and facilitating an event is as easy as A B C; it is a perception that has little truthfulness in it. This job is beyond commanding or handing orders. It requires thorough understanding of the do’s and don’ts in implementing an event; it is looking over multiple people and committees. It’s a tough work, much like the other duties involved in the event; tough work that has been so effectively accomplished by Ms. Pili.

Additionally, around the months of April and May, Ms. Aubrey started crafting the proposal. That was one thing, but with the subsequent processes such as the approval, the general planning, and the budgeting, the team had a bit of the timeframe to work hard on one of the factors of why the success of the event was so significant.

Here, the watcher, took a leap over the fence, and did beyond the expected performance of her duty. An overseer who strived to empower and improve the game is Ms. Aubrey Pili.

The Silent Hand.

Mrs. Junecel Soltes is another Guidance Counselor II, who has been working in NNHS since 2017, right after passing as registered Guidance Counselor.

PUSH TO THE MAX. Mrs. Margie Romualdo, department head of TLE together with her co teachers happily enjoying the Zumba segment of the Brigada Eskwela Kick off ceremony this August 15, 2022 at Civic center, Nabua National High School. RAISAMAERABELAS

As part of the guidance team, she helped facilitatethe event.

It is simple. It is inconspicuous. But, sometimes, in the dark corners of silence, it is the quiet and hidden core that drives the light to shine through the lens of the conspicuous majority. And that is Mrs. JunecelSoltes.

The End.

Coming up with an event that requires huge efforts and consumes a lot of work and personal time is one thing, but successfully executing it with pure grace and attention on the topic that it seeks to teach is a thing that can only be done with an unwavering commitment andadherenceto one’s mission.

In every film ending, it is the name of the creative team seen on the black screen. In a theater curtain call, along with the performers, it is the backstage people who are applauded. In every closing event, it is the crew behind the program that are thanked for. In the end, the people behind the scenes appear at the last moment, honored and revered by those who have witnessed the light emanated towards the advocacy they standfor.

Being at the center of commitment is commitmentatitsbest.

Mental Health in the Philippines is a pressing issue that remains to be avoided and misunderstood. Growing up in a common Filipino household, speaking up about our mental health was never a given option at the table. As a child, teen and an adult, we were forced to brush off our mental problems and keep it to ourselves until it piles up and explodes, resulting in bad and harmful repercussions.

Thankfully, now that the Philippines is entering a new age, Filipinos are gradually becoming more welcoming in having conversations with regard to mental health. Advocacies and programs about Mental Health Awareness started to surge and spread out all across the country.Filipinos are slowly realizing how mental health disorders are real, unimaginary, and should be takenwithutmost concern.

Mrs. Ma. Janice F. Cunanan, a guidance counselor Kilicao High School from Kilicao, Daraga, Albay, understood the assignment and responsibility as she accepted the invitation of Nabua National High School (NNHS) to be the guest speaker of their recently conducted program entitled, “Parent Power: A Session on Mental Health Awareness for Parents” last August 31, 2022 atCong. parents about what mental health and mental disorders are and to teach them how to practice self care because most of the time, they tend to forget that they are only humans whose well being should be taken care of. They undergo all sorts of stress and depression because of the burden and weight of responsibilities that are put ontheir shoulders.

Reminding everyone that we still can do something, especially the parents, in preventing and mitigating the acquisition of mental health disorders among themselves and others. She added, they have to acknowledge the things that they can do and to appreciate all the things they have done. They can start by establishing a healthy relationship and an open communication with their family where it is safe and welcome to talk about certain issues like

Mrs. Ma. Janice F. Cunanan ended the interview with a plea for our dear parents to keep their physical and mental health intact because only then can they become and serve as the driving force for their children inbecomingbetter individuals.

“Good or sound mental health is a prerequisite for a very effective and efficient parentingstyle”.

This was the statement among many that impacted on me and others in the audience

Mrs. Cunanan shared that when she was invited to be the guest speaker of the said program, she did not think twice to accept the invitation because she knows that she will be of help to the parents who are confused and are experiencing mental health disorders.

She wanted to explain and enlighten the

He explained that in the Philippines, a country with a culture that stigmatizes mental health and exhibits a scarcity on comprehensive and accessible discussions on the topic in most Filipino households, initiating this kind of activity would usually come across a strange and uncomfortable topic. Most importantly, the lack of criticism and analysis on the stigma and misconceptions will fortify a wrong mindset on mental health. This is why dialogues on this topic is a key tool in upholding mental health awareness. By providing dialogues that are gentle, informative, andcomprehensive, and spreading would combat the stigma in many secluded places where information is inaccessible.

Mr. Rastrullo is a psychologist at theTulayngKabataan, a non government organization (NGO) which provides basic needs to poverty stricken, abandoned and special children. It is in this place that he realized a passion and calling as an emphatic helper in the field.

The pandemic has, indeed, affected many of us. Aside from the physical repercussions, two years of limited interaction may have tampered with our mental health. It’s been a wild ride of emotions; however, we must not forget that even before the pandemic, mental health awareness has been rampantly demanded for wide access and dissemination. It is the decades of combating stigma and the many advances and breakthroughs in mental health that we must always upholdandstrivetoimpart topeople.
