Letter from the Head

These are the lofty goals upon which The Pegasus School was built. I am honored to be part of an organization that weaves such vision into daily life and remains committed to founding values at every crossroad in its development. I am pleased to share with you our Strategic Plan of 2011 – a comprehensive five-year blueprint of goals and strategies that will guide the Pegasus School well into the next generation. The Pegasus School has provided outstanding academic programs for Orange County families since 1984. Our school is known for challenging academics, for the development of outstanding teachers, and for our commitment to the education of bright and gifted students. Our graduates are disciplined, creative, and innovative. They have confidence and character. They attend the finest high schools in the area and are represented in top colleges across the nation. Our 2011 Strategic Plan builds on this foundation of excellence. Developed by the school’s Board of Trustees with broad participation from the entire school community, the Strategic Plan establishes priorities for the next five years with a strategic view towards the longer term. The document will guide the Board, the administration, the faculty, and staff in establishing priorities for action. It poses vital questions for study and research, the answers to which will determine actions to be taken. Read More >

OUR GOALS

Our Plan is ambitious. It provides for the continuing growth of dynamic student programs and the ongoing development of our first rate faculty. The Plan prioritizes outstanding facilities and extends our culture of collaboration and innovation in teaching. Additionally, the Plan focuses the school on priorities for communication and extends the reach of our community by bringing alumni closer to the school and developing resources to sustain our mission for future generations. Our school has grown from its first seven children to a thriving and diverse campus of 565 students because of a genuine commitment from the entire Pegasus Community. The success of this plan will require sustained commitment from a new generation of leaders and donors who support our goal to provide a transformative educational experience. I encourage you to review our plan and I welcome your thoughts about our goals and aspirations. Thank you for your continued support of The Pegasus School. Now the work begins... John H. Zurn

OUR PROCESS

OUR GOALS

In the fall of 2010, The Pegasus School Board of Trustees embarked on a strategic planning process to establish principles of growth through leadership transition. The process was orchestrated by an Oversight Committee composed of Board members, faculty, and administration, chaired by parent and trustee, Leslie Seidner. Through January of 2011, the Oversight Committee administered school-wide surveys for parents and faculty (with an impressive 80% and 76% response rate, respectively) and followed up with listening sessions to identify core questions and issues. The Head of School also met with a range of alumni and student groups, parents, and donors in a variety of settings. Results were compiled with a variety of other historical, accreditation, and statistical information to inform the planning process and to assign specific tasks for sub-committee work.

OUR GOALS

Six sub-committees- representing all constituencies in the community – were formed. The sub-committees convened for a retreat in February, followed by individual sub-committee meetings throughout March, April and May. Initial sub-committee reports were presented to the Board of Trustees at a June 2011 Board retreat. The Oversight Committee, administration, and Board of Trustees continued to revise the Strategic Plan through the summer and early fall. In September 2011, the Strategic Plan was formally approved by the Board of Trustees. The School’s Strategic Plan will be implemented through an internal Action Plan with specific strategies, actions, accountability charts, and completion dates. To fulfill the vision outlined in this plan will require innovation, organization and resources. As we complete the goals of this plan, we will create an even more vibrant school whose place of leadership in our community will become increasingly relevant. We invite the entire Pegasus community to participate in our future.

Our Goal: We will build on our legacy of outstanding teachers and expand the caliber of academic curriculum and gifted educational programs at The Pegasus School. Dr. Laura Hathaway’s vision to fill her classrooms with passionate, inspiring, and innovative teachers remains strong twenty-seven years after she founded The Pegasus School. Successful Pegasus teachers can articulate their passion for gifted education, demonstrate a strong connection to children, and own the intellectual capacity to challenge and support Pegasus students. The Pegasus School will attract, retain, support and inspire a team of talented faculty, administration and staff dedicated to delivering the mission of the school. The Pegasus School was founded as a school for gifted students whose unique combinations of intellect and developmental readinesses demanded fresh perspectives in teaching. Our teachers embrace principles of gifted education for all of our students: high academic content, high interest, and appreciation for individual differences. The School’s 2008 Vision Plan established a model for national curriculum research and development with profound impact on the ways educators deliver academic program to students. We will build on programs that inspire our student’s intellectual talents and prepare our students for responsible leadership. Objectives and Implementation Steps >

Our Goal: We will expand on the remarkable accomplishments of our school over the last two decades by focusing our financial resources on the development of our strategic initiatives to support outstanding faculty, ongoing academic excellence, and the long term development of school facilities and resources. Over two and a half decades, The Pegasus School has grown from a handful of students to its current enrollment of 565. Within that time period, the school has completed the purchase of its campus from the Fountain Valley School District (2003), as well as completed two capital building projects (Palley Complex in 1997, Hathaway Activities Center in 2000). Additionally, the school has raised a small, but growing, endowment of $3,200,000 to support school operations. The school currently stands in a position of fiscal strength in which revenue matches expenses, and financial operations are reviewed and updated regularly. Over the next five years, the school will embrace four strategic financial priorities:

• Outstanding teaching supported by competitive faculty salaries and benefits;

• Dynamic educational experiences supported by program, faculty, and plant development;

• Strong financial stewardship supported by fiscally responsible business management;

• Communication within our community in order to sustain our financial priorities Objectives and Implementation Steps > EXIT
