Searching for a term to describe the SPU Manila academic community today, the word “indomitable” comes to mind. in·dom·i·ta·ble adjective. impossible to subdue or defeat. Synonyms: never-say-die, unvanquishable, inexpugnable, unbeatable, unconquerable.

We are in one of the most difficult times in history, if not the most difficult, and indeed, many sectors of society, many businesses, many schools have been subdued and defeated and have closed shop. Thank God, we have not.

The indomitable spirit must be a legacy of our patron and founder, Fr. Louis Chauvet, who lived in 17th century France, at “a time of great change and unrest for the country and the rest of the world that went through the Hundred Years War. Levesville was a countryside laid in ruin; the people, burdened with both material and spiritual needs. The ignorance, apathy, and illiteracy of the poor grew at an alarming rate.” In this devastating time and place, Fr. Chauvet dared to lift the people from their suffering through “a few country girls filled with the desire to seek God and to serve others by instructing those in need of education and caring for the sick of the small village.”

From this small group of young girls grew a Congregation that “now serves the people of all nations, caring for the youth, the sick, the shut-ins and the elderly—throughout six continents of the globe. Today the Congregation has almost 4000 members of 28 nationalities and is serving 35 countries in a variety of ways. It is a long history of Love, written in a mysterious way and hidden in the hearts of thousands of women.”

With such an illustrious history, is it any wonder that the Sisters and their lay collaborators in SPU Manila are “indomitable”? Working together, we have been able to overcome the obstacles brought about by the scourge of the pandemic and achieved more than what we thought we could. This is evidenced by the following achievements:

1. We were able to make our motto—”Caritas Christi Urget Nos”—come alive through the sustained operations of the St. Paul University Manila-Barangay 697 Community Pantry, which started on April 21, 2021.

To date, we have had a total of 24 CP operations—15 on Gen. Malvar St.; seven on Pedro Gil St., with UP Manila as the main player and with SPU Manila playing a supporting role; and two CP operations on Pedro Gil St. shared

by SPU Manila and UP Manila. In all these pantries, SPU Manila has provided the venue for the operations. More than 6,010 food packs have been shared with the needy.

2. In the academic field, we were able to come up with a home-grown approach to online distance learning, The Three I’s of Flexible Learning: Input-Based Instruction, Interactive Reinforcement, and Independent Learning. Lessons were presented in manageable forms through the Digital Learning Packets, making it easy for students to follow. Technological tools for learning were provided through the Flexible Online Learning Stations and Schoology.

The PauliEDGE or Excellence Through Digital Education is a breakthrough which served as an opportunity for the members of the community to share their giftedness and at the same time to hone the research capabilities of the academic community and other external clients.

4. The organizational review paved the way to more efficient and effective organizational structure.

The indomitable spirit has also touched the students, especially those in the staff of The Paulinian. These young writers use their creativity and skills to awaken and inspire their fellow students to become good Paulinians, responsible citizens, faithful Christians, proactive stewards of creation. Holding fast to this year’s theme “Amplify: Regaining People Power through Media,” their articles reflect the steadfast and undaunted spirit of the Paulinians of today.

There is a popular adage that says, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Truly, the going this past year and a half has been tough, but we continue going, believing, serving because we are “Gifted to Give”—and we are INDOMITABLE!

Editor’s Message The last two years of our lives have become crucial times in determining the next slate of leaders.

The Philippine pandemic experience is certainly incomparable from those of other countries, and this clearly unmasked our underperforming officials. To blame the public for the recurring surge in numbers is so 2020. The Filipinos have endured so much just to make ends meet even if they already have one foot buried six feet deep. Now it is time to demand accountability. It is time to urge officials to set aside their political agenda that conflict with the pandemic response.

Since last year, we have been talking about adapting to the “new normal.” We advocated—and continue to advocate—practicing minimum health standards in order to dodge the then fatal COVID-19.

But nearly two years into healing, the paradigm has gradually shifted as vaccines began to be approved, shipped, and continuously inoculated to the general public. As of writing, there are now over 24.6 million individuals who have received full jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine. That accounts for 22.4% of the population—but barely half of the target of 70% vaccinated Filipinos needed to attain herd immunity.

We have also seen major political controversies pass through our feeds several times in the past year—from the agreement violation committed during the heat of the UP-DND discord in January, the death of former President Benigno Aquino III, the ‘flagging’ reports of COA that faced administrative backlash, and now, election shenanigans bombarding various media platforms, among many others.

In spite of the political turmoil and uncertainty, The Paulinian, as a campus media organization, has always been true to its duty as a member of the fourth estate. Our lines and content have always been directed towards disseminating facts and figures about in- and off- campus activities that matter to our readers and followers. Now, we are about to move to another phase of broadcasting as student journalists, as our platform now aims serves to amplify thoughts and experienced realities, especially with regards to the pandemic and the upcoming elections.

We have seen worse and we know what is better, and that better is never going to happen if we willfully stay ignorant and elect the same faces that we have never seen on the streets genuinely helping the masses. The masses are being exploited in several campaign advertisements, but sadly, they do not seem to realize it.

It is time to amplify our voices.

Amplify the voices of the unheard, echo the battle cries and advocacies that we have always been passionate about and causes we have long been fighting for. Stand up and never be belittled by the army of trolls that have nothing to tell you but lies and misleading information. Our generation should not allow the horrors of the past to return and undermine the good interests of a true servant leader.

The College of Business and Management (CBM) and other entrepreneurship programs of St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila) held a franchising webinar titled “Moving Forward Through Franchising” on September 15, via Zoom meeting, as part of the participating students’ Franchising class. “’Moving Forward Through Franchising’ was organized because of the pandemic situation. This pandemic will not stop as per moving forward and creating new businesses,” Dr. Amelia Butial, teacher of the Franchising class, said.

Mr. Rudolf Kotik, CEO of RK Franchise Consultancy, was the event’s resource speaker.

Kotik, who was also part of 2018’s the Franchise Exhibit of Business Management and Entrepreneurship students, gave the participants an overview of franchising history and fundamentals.

“In the Philippines, franchising became popular or started up in the domestic market because of a crisis,” Kotik said in his discussion.

“If we would not have had the Asian (Financial) Crisis, I presume, franchising in the Philippines would not be as big as it is today,” he added.

“During the time of pandemic, it is really a challenging time, yet, an opportune time for us to move forward into other avenues, one of which is franchising,” Leongson said in her opening remarks.

The webinar began with the presentation of the franchise concepts of 2020’s Franchising Class students, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the Opening Prayer, led by the CBM Council President, Sofia Dollesin.

Business practitioners share franchising background Providing further industry-based knowledge, the webinar also featured franchisees and franchisors from food and non-food sectors.

Mr. Carlos Ang, franchisor of Suds Laundry, discussed how he transitioned from a job at Intel into becoming a pioneer in the clothing care industry in the country. Ang introduced wet cleaning technology to the Philippines in partnership with German companies.

Handling the leading Thai Tea brand in the Philippines, Mr. Gem Manaol addressed the changes that his business, Cha Tuk Chak, underwent during this pandemic. The Thai Street Café has been bringing flavors of Thailand to the Philippines since 2017.

“We are very proud to say that we are not just surviving, we are thriving as a business,” said Manaol as he described Cha Tuk Chak in the new normal.

These two franchisors have worked with the event’s resource speaker, Mr. Kotik, and RK Franchise Consultancy in opening multiple branches around the country.

Giving her perspective as a franchisee of Master Siomai, Mrs. Marietta Gonzales shared her journey through franchising and the stages involved in owning a business. Gonzales is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Financial Consultant.

Dr. Arsenio Bignotia, Business Management Chairperson, ended the event with his Closing Remarks, followed by the Closing Prayer.

The franchising event is the first of a series of webinars organized by the Career Development Academy of SPU Manila, with certificate courses and life skill short courses to follow in the coming months.

Idinaos ang taunang pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika na may temang “Wika ng Kasaysayan, Kasaysayan ng Wika,” sa isang virtual event sa Facebook page ng St. Paul University Manila Supreme Student Council (SPU Manila-SSC), Setyembre 11.

Tampok sa selebrasyon ang paggamit ng iba’t ibang diyalekto ng bansa at ang kahalagahan nito sa pagsugpo sa pandemiya.

Gamit ang isang tula at video presentation, inilarawan ng Kolehiyo ng Pangangalakal at Pamamahala ang krisis na nagaganap sa iba’t ibang aspekto ng komersiyo dulot ng COVID-19. Sa isang awitin naman ipinamalas ng Kolehiyo ng Musika at Pagtatanghal ang kanilang pagkilala sa ambag ng sining sa panahon ng pandemiya.

Samantala, idinaan sa maikling pag-arte ng Kolehiyo ng Agham, Sining, at Edukasyon ang kahirapang dinaranas ng kapwa mag-aaral at guro sa ilalim ng distance learning. Tinampok namang muli ang medical frontliners sa video message ng Kolehiyo ng Narsing na nagbibigay-pugay sa mga nars, doktor, at iba pang manggagawang humaharap sa panganib ng COVID-19.

Nagtanghal din ang mga miyembro ng Paulinian Dance Troupe, Tanghalang St. Paul, at si John Teodosio ng Kolehiyo ng Sining, Agham, at Edukasyon.

“Nawa, patuloy tayong maging aktibo sa pagbibigay pag-asa at inspirasyon sa ating kapwa mag-aaral,” mensahe ni Supreme Student Council (SSC) President Abcydee Gonzales sa kaniyang pasasalamat.

Teaching amidst crisis: SPU Manila celebrates World Teachers Day

St. Paul University Manila ended the month-long celebration of World Teachers Day on October 30, 2020, with a Facebook live event entitled “#TeachersOfTipol.”

Bearing the theme “Leading the crisis, reimagining the future,” the St. Paul University Manila Supreme Student Council (SPU Manila SSC), along with the College Department and other organizations, organized and presented the said celebration on the SSC Facebook page.

“Despite the struggles faced during these trying times, it is our academic managers and teachers who stepped up and made education possible and within reach,” SSC Public

Relations Officer, Francesca Dychangco, said in her opening remarks.

The online celebration, hosted by Jasmine Kalaw, started with an opening prayer by Ivy Sadi of the Paulinian Liturgical Animators, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

Featured teachers give insights on distance learning As part of the program, four Paulinian educators were interviewed regarding their experiences, insights, motivations, and tips or advice to students who are struggling in this time of pandemic, particularly with distance learning.

Teachers also experience challenges so she emphasized that the best solution is keeping the faith and having a strong prayer life.

“I always believe that more than the intelligence, we have to cope with adversities (with prayer) because that (challenge) has already become something that’s normal,” said Dr. Leongson, Dr. Nancy Aguila, a nurse and instructor in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, stressed the importance of molding future healthcare professionals at this time.

“It’s really a difficult and challenging time with our situation, but what keeps me motivated to teach is knowing that we are forming future professional nurses, who are very much needed at this time,” Dr. Aguila shared.

Paskuhan 2020 Goes Online

A week before Christmas, on December 18 2020, the St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila) community celebrated its annual Paskuhan event with the theme “Paskong Paulino: Katatagan, Pagmamahalan, at Pag-asa sa Gitna ng Pandemya” via a Facebook live event broadcast on the SPU Manila Supreme Student Council page.

Various performances from the different colleges, as well as from SPU Manila employees, were presented in the said online celebration, hosted by Bea Villanueva and Franchesca Faylona.

To commence the program, Ms. Elmgay Valeriano, Student Welfare and Development Head, delivered her welcome message to the viewers.

“Nawa, sa gitna ng pandemya, alalahanin natin na ang tunay na diwa ng Pasko ay si Hesus na isinilang sa atin (Amid a pandemic, may we still remember that Jesus and his birth remain to be the true spirit of Christmas),” she said.

Ms. Valeriano ended her speech by saying: “Tunay na walang maiiwan, sapagkat ito ang tunay na Paskong Paulino (No one shall be left behind because that is what a Paulinian Christmas is).”

SPU Manila Grads Pass 2020 Physician Licensure Exams

By Logan Zapanta; Layout by Andrea Postolero Six Paulinian alumni passed the recently concluded November 2020 Physician Licensure Examinations (PLE).

Trixie Bacalla, Glaisa Claveria, Jeremy Guieb, Bernadette Julian, Bea Ligeralde, and Pauline Villanueva are the new physicians who are SPU Manila alumni.

The Nursing Program makes up for most of the Paulinian passers, with Bacalla, Julian, Ligeralde, and Villanueva all receiving this degree from SPU Manila. Claveria obtained her Master’s in Nursing and Guieb his BS Psychology from the University.

Although restrained by the present health crisis, the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC) insisted on pushing through with the examinations as they “recognize the urgent need for physicians during these times of public health emergency.”

The November 2020 PLE is the second physicians’ board exam. The first one was conducted in September 2020.

These Paulinians join the overall passers totaled at 3, 538 out of 4,704 who took the exams.

Guieb shares COVID, PLE experience Jeremy Tomas Guieb, a 2013 Psychology graduate of SPU Manila, discussed the difficulties he encountered while preparing for and taking the licensure exams.

Aside from the strenuous review periods and bouts with burnout, the new Paulinian physician also experienced difficulties when he had to take care of his father, who tested positive for COVID-19.

“I overcame all of these obstacles with the help of my family, my partner, and my friends. They all kept me sane during the hard times. Also, a day or two days of break helped me a lot,” he added.

Guieb also encouraged Paulinians, who are aspiring doctors, to always persevere amidst challenges.

“The greatest one (challenge) I think would be when my father tested positive for COVID as he is already immunocompromised since he is a post-stroke patient. This happened on the 2nd to the last week of July. Our board exam was (originally) scheduled in September. It was very difficult to study at this time as I could not focus on all my readings while managing my father at home,” Guieb shared.

CNAHS hosts webinar on stress, burnout

By Logan Zapanta In line with the celebration of St. Paul University Manila’s University Week, the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) conducted a webinar entitled “Lassitude is not a Lazy Attitude” on January 23, 2021, with almost 600 attendees from both Zoom and Facebook live.

Lassitude, or burnout, was the forum’s main topic, as discussed by resource speaker, Mr. Melvin Macuha, a registered psychologist and part-time instructor in SPU Manila.

Before the talk formally started, the Masters of Ceremony, Jasmine Kalaw and Jacob Mateo from CNAHS conducted a game. Paulinians from different colleges and departments took part in the Fact or Bluff game, winners of which received Php 100 prizes via GCash.

Mr. Melvin Macuha began his talk with a brief burnout evaluation, which, he clarified, is one among many tools used in assessing burnout levels, but does not guarantee 100% accuracy. The outcome of the evaluation showed that 50% of the participants experienced a moderate level of burnout.

“I’m actually not expecting this, since my idea is this semester has just started, and we’re already almost a year into this pandemic. Most probably, some, or most of us may have somehow coped with the situation, and we can see that most of you are already at the moderate level,” he stated.

Mr. Macuha further pursued his discussion by addressing the difference between burnout and stress.

“Burnout is related to or is a result of unmanaged and unrelenting stress, but burnout is not the same as stress. Although, of course, these unmanaged stresses, when piled up, may result in burnout,” he clarified.

The speaker talked about the most common types of burnout that students and employees experience: social media, job, and academic. He emphasized that these three are amplified now in the pandemic, as people are transitioning to online classes and work-from-home setups.

To combat bouts of lassitude, Mr. Macuha laid out 3 R’s to remember when dealing with it: recognize, reverse, and resilience. In order to alleviate these burnouts, you must watch for warning signs (recognize), invert the damages by managing stress or seeking support (reverse), and use burnout as an opportunity to redo your life (resilience).

Lastly, Mr. Macuha encouraged the participants to do self-care and reminded them not to invalidate their feelings.

The resource speaker ended his discussion by saying:

“Don’t push yourself too much.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. When you are experiencing immense stress, take more care of yourself and understand that what you are experiencing requires action.”

In the same webinar, the Paulinian Environmental Society presented an intermission video showing some Paulinian fur-friends, after some remarks from Dr. Jennifer Olivar, RN, Dean of CNAHS.

First-ever virtual game held at SPU Manila’s University Week

By Anna Torres Layout by Elisha Villanueva Paulinians began the second day of the 109th University Week celebration by holding the first-ever Virtual Game live via Zoom and streamed through St. Paul University Manila’s Facebook page.

The game, which was composed of 20 questions about the facilities and history of SPU Manila, was an online interactive event for Paulinian students and employees.

Participants from the different departments and colleges of the University were given the opportunity to type in their answers in the chat box. The first to enter the correct answer was awarded a Php 100 prize, to be claimed via GCash.

“It was fun and thrilling. I needed to type my answer quickly because a lot of students could already guess the answer even if the question was not yet finished,” Danica Soledad, a student of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE), said. “ At the same time, I gained knowledge about the University because there were some questions that I did not know before,” she added. Soledad won the bonus question, a round that was sponsored by the Supreme Student Council (SSC) of SPU Manila.

During the game, Francesca Dychangco and Mr. Ajocrivipor Agojo went to the different parts of the campus to reminisce about the events that occurred when face-to-face classes were still in place. They also presented questions related to the specific locations they were at.

The event was hosted by Abcydee Gonzales from the College of Business and Management (CBM), Shanelle Baniqued from the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE), together with Francesca Dychangco from the Tourism Program, and Agojo, Chair of University Week 2021.

Virtual Game, which was held on the 22nd of January, was a part of the University’s weeklong celebration of its founding anniversary.

A number of fora, eucharistic celebrations, and games were held throughout the celebration.

SPU Manila commemorates 109th founding anniversary virtually

By Logan Zapanta For the first time since its founding, the St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila) community celebrated its annual University Week online on January 21-26, 2021.

A kickoff celebration commenced the week-long commemoration of the 109th anniversary of the institution. Bearing the theme “SPUM @ 109: Strengthened in Faith, Empowered to Rise, Gifted to Give through the Years,” the virtual event took place via Zoom and streamed through Facebook live.

Dr. Joanne Popanes, Vice President of Student Services, officially started the event with her opening remarks. In her speech, she highlighted how different this year’s celebration is, but still, the fundamental aspects of the University Week remain in place.

“We may not be perfect in our ways of overcoming the challenges brought by the pandemic, but we have not forgotten to share our talents and skills. Our community has remained strong, and our faith has become stronger,” Dr. Popanes said.

“Let us not forget to appreciate how far we have come and evolved from the start of this pandemic. Let us be thankful for the gifts of faith, resilience, and community,” she added.

In the same event, hosts Abcydee Gonzales and Shanelle Baniqued gave the audience a virtual campus tour. Clips of SPU Manila’s facilities, departments, and colleges were shown, and some trivias regarding the University were shared. Faculty, staff, and Sisters were also given a chance to greet the whole Paulinian community a happy founding anniversary.

Continuing with the video presentations, a compilation of clips from the past University Week celebrations was shown to the virtual attendees.

The online kickoff celebration was hosted by on-site emcees Abcydee Gonzales and Shanelle Baniqued, who were joined by Bea Villanueva and Franchesca Faylona virtually.

SPU Manila’s 109th founding year was not the only anniversary celebrated, as it coincided with the 325th anniversary of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres, the 110th year of SPC Formation, and the 500th year of Christianity in the Philippines.

This kickoff celebration was just the first of many events in this year’s University Week. A number of fora, contests, and Masses were held from January 21 to 26.

RED Management initiates Psychological First Aid webinar

By Sherly Traifalgar Layout by Gillianne Pasumbal St. Paul University Manila’s Readiness Efforts for Disaster Management (RED Management), in collaboration with other SPU Manila organizations, conducted a Psychological First Aid webinar on March 5 and March 8 via Zoom meeting.

Headlining the event was its resource speaker, Mr. Prednison Morales, RSW, a Focal Person for the Psychosocial Support Program of the Welfare Services of the Philippine Red Cross.

The March 5 session of the online seminar began with the opening remarks of Dr. Joanne S. Popanes, Vice President for Student Services.

“The goal of Psychological First Aid (PFA) is to promote safety, stabilize survivors of disasters, and connect individuals to help and resources,” Dr. Popanes stated.

“We live in a society that takes care of one another. As Paulinians, you are to be dedicated, transformative supporters and stewards of all creation. It is our duty to devote our time, talents, and resources to improve and maintain the well-being and health of people, especially the less-privileged and underserved,” she added.

To commence the discussion part of the webinar’s first session, Mr. Morales, who is a registered social worker, conducted an activity to assess the preliminary knowledge of almost 300 attendees in the Psychological First Aid (PFA). The speaker then talked about the importance of PFA skills when providing emotional support and practical help.

“Once you provide information to people, it can save them. If the other person needs support or services, we can help them by advising them what to do,” he said.

The resource speaker also took time to address some misconceptions concerning Psychological First Aid. He explained that PFA is not something that only professionals do; therefore, it is not professional counseling or therapy.

As the pandemic continues to influence the mental well-being of people, Mr. Morales encouraged participants to narrate their experiences during the coronavirus lockdown.

“We became more conscious of how to protect ourselves. But, on the other side, may magandang naidulot din ‘yung COVID in our family; because it became our time to be together, time to bond more (But, on the other side, COVID still did some good to our family, as it served as our time to be together and time to bond more),” Ms. Yoti Dizon, a Guidance Associate of SPU Manila and participant of the webinar’s second session, shared.

Mr. Morales also emphasized the importance of knowing our reactions and applying the Psychological First Aid in times of crisis like this.

“Although we are experiencing the same problem, we have different reactions and ways of coping,” he said.

To end, Mr. Prednison laid out some ways on how people can cope with the ongoing pandemic.

The speaker highlighted steps on self-care and how they can be used to adapt to the present situation.

“If you feel na hindi na kayo okay, it’s okay (If you feel like you are not okay, it’s okay). You can seek support. Because help is available—we are here to support you,” Mr. Morales said.

Psychological First Aid was a two-part webinar series which catered to students, employees, and alumni of SPU Manila.

It was a collaboration between RED Management, Red Cross Youth Council, The Paulinian, SPUM-Supreme Student Council, Paulinian Psychology Circle, and Paulinian Environmental Society.

SPU Manila Represents NCR in DOST Research-Backed Policymaking Competition

With the aim of cultivating academic presentation and research communication skills, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) conducted a 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition on March 17, 2021, held via Zoom and Facebook live.

The competition was participated in by 12 representatives from different regions of the Philippines. Each of the presenters was given three minutes to present a policy that is related to their accomplished study.

Among the competitors was Dr. Brian Bantugan, Director of the Center for Research, Innovation, and Development (CRID) of St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila), who represented the National Capital Region (NCR).

Dr. Bantugan introduced his “To See is To Act” policy, a program that focuses on providing public spaces that encourage interactions with people experiencing mental health troubles.

He based this policy on his previous research titled “From Visualization to Exhibition to Action: Provoking Action on Mental Health Issues through a Photo Exhibition,” wherein he studied if photographs can help address mental well-being issues.

“Every institution should have a public space where people who are marginalized and people who can help them can actually have a conversation. Therefore, the stigma attached to hiding mental illness into private spaces will be modified, will become more normalized, and the people will not be embarrassed about what they are feeling or experiencing,” Dr. Bantugan said in his 3-minute pitch.

The NCR representative capped his presentation by emphasizing the need for policies instituting spaces of discussion, support, and empathy.

“They need to have these spaces for their own mental health because what happens on the outside transforms them on the inside,” said Dr. Bantugan.

Dr. Bantugan managed to place fifth in the poll for the People’s Choice Award by garnering 5.1% of the votes.

Meanwhile, Region 3’s Mr. Noriel Calaguas placed third in the overall competition award with his policy “9 Ways to Improve Gay and Bi Men’s HIV Testing Rates.”

A policy advocating for better pre-natal service for pregnant people titled “Antenatal Care: Every Pregnant Mother’s Right for Quality Care,” presented by Dr. Mary Joy Sande, Region 5’s delegate got 2nd place.

Region 10’s representative, Dr. Gina S. Itchon, topped the 3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition. She presented a policy entitled “The Web-GRD Project Helping LGUs Make Better and Faster Decisions during Emergency,” a program that intends to develop a decision support tool.

3-Minute Pitch to Policymakers Competition is part of the DOST-PCHRD’s 39th anniversary celebration, with the theme “Strategic R&D Partnership for Global Health.”

SPU Manila Community Joins “New Normal” Shake Drill

Students, employees, and Sisters of St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila) participated in the First Quarter Online National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill held by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) as streamed live through Civil Defense PH’s Facebook page on March 11.

To formally commence the event, several government officials pressed a red button at exactly 2:00 P.M., sounding the alarms. At this time, participants were encouraged to duck, cover, and hold—the standard safety measure during earthquakes. The evacuation part of the drill was not conducted this time in observance of COVID-19 protocols.

Some 32 staff and Sisters of SPU Manila participated in the online shake drill in the Founder’s Hall. Meanwhile, other university employees joined in their respective offices while the students engaged in their homes. Even Paulinians attending their synchronous classes were enjoined to participate in the drill. Construction workers working inside SPU Manila joined as well.

The facilitation of the drill inside the campus was conducted by the Disaster Management Advocacy Team headed by Mr. Melvin Macuha, with the help of Engr. Mervin Cequeña (Safety Officer) and Ms. Abigail Valenzuela (General Services Head).

Mr. Macuha, who also serves as the moderator of SPU Manila’s Readiness Efforts for Disaster Management (RED Management), addressed the importance of these drills in preparing for possible disasters.

“It is our responsibility, especially now during the pandemic, to know what to do before, during, and after the disaster. We can learn more on how to be safe by engaging ourselves with disaster drills,” Mr. Macuha stated.

SPU Manila’s participation in the said event was upon the recommendation of University President, Sr. Ma. Evangeline Anastacio, SPC. The NDRRMC, with the help of other government sectors, regularly conducts these drills to promote awareness on basic safety steps whenever an earthquake strikes.

SPU Manila, Brgy. 697 put up community pantry

St. Paul University Manila, in response to the recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases and the reimposition of strict quarantine measures, initiated a community pantry within the vicinity of the campus on April 21.

‘Barangay 697-St. Paul Community Pantry’ is a collaborative effort among the barangay officials of Brgy.

697 (where SPU Manila belongs), the University, and private individuals.

University President, Sr. Evangeline Anastacio SPC, stated in her Facebook post that, “The Community Pantries spread throughout the country are truly a manifestation of God’s compassion for humankind. [They are] a present-day reality of the multiplication of the loaves and Jesus feeding the multitude so that no one will remain hungry.”

“I’m truly overwhelmed by the generous response of our Paulinian alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, relatives, and friends to our call for support.

What we gave out this morning has been replenished almost immediately and even more. May God bless all the kind-hearted donors,” she added.

Ms. Bing Morado, who serves as SPU Manila’s Assistant Manager of Residence Services and College of Music and the Performing Arts (CMPA) Secretary, informed the University President regarding the call for a joint effort in putting up a pantry within the barangay. Sr. Evangeline immediately agreed to work with the barangay officials, as she had in fact already intended setting one up.

According to Ms. Morado, who also assists the organizers of the initiative, some 150 to 200 recipients are being served each day by the said community pantry, with lines sometimes spanning from SPU Manila’s Malvar exit up to Pedro Gil Street. For a more organized system, stubs are given to those who wish to acquire goods. However, those who are not able to get stubs are still given goods.

Barangay 697-St. Paul Community Pantry is open from 9:00-11:00 A.M. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Those who wish to donate may drop off their goods at the SPU Manila Malvar gate on any day, between 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. “We accept anything, from canned goods, noodles, coffee, to vegetables and fruits. Anything that would be essential and of use for the people. And, yes, monetary donation is also accepted. Just deposit it in St. Paul University Manila’s BPI or BDO account,” Ms. Morado said.

A lady named Ana Patricia Non was the first to organize a community pantry in the country when she started one along the streets of Maginhawa, Quezon City. Since then, numerous pantries started popping up in different locations in the country, for a total of some 300 community pantries. Other parishes and Catholic schools in Manila, such as the Baclaran parish and St. Scholastica’s College, also joined this initiative—all with the same premise, “Take what you need; give what you can.”

PSG Presidentiables, aspiring officers forward plans in Miting de Avance

Perhaps the most-anticipated part of the PSG Miting De Avance was the Harapan segment, wherein aspirants from both Adhika and Agapay Party Lists were given the chance to explain their platforms further as they answered questions coming from the panelists. Harapan 2021 did not set any time limit for the candidate’s answers, and the panelists were given the opportunity to ask a specific student-leader.

Incoming and aspiring student-leaders appeared before the whole Paulinian community on April 19 in the second virtual Paulinian Student Government (PSG) Miting de Avance. It carried the theme “Paulinian Leaders Facing the Challenges of the New Normal in Higher Education.”

PSG Miting de Avance is an annual event of the student councils of St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila), which aims to introduce student-leader hopefuls for each school year. Last year, however, due to the sudden cancellation of classes, only a modified type was carried out; hence, this year’s Miting De Avance is the first of its kind, as it was held via Zoom meeting and was streamed live through The Paulinian’s Facebook page.

Dr. Joanne Popanes RGC, Vice President for Student Services, opened the event with her welcome remarks.

“This activity is a symbol of strength and resilience of the Paulinians because we know how important this activity is. We know that in order to preserve our democracy and be true Paulinians, we need to have this activity,” Dr. Popanes stated.

Agapay, Adhika share thoughts on social issues, leadership

Students running for office under the College Student Councils were given the chance to relay their platforms and give their take on the question “What does it mean to be a Paulinian leader during the pandemic?” The College of Arts, Sciences, and Education (CASE) Student Council, College of Music and the Performing Arts (CMPA) Student Council, and College of Business and Management (CBM)-Adhika Pintig Party List all presented their plans and introductions through a video presentation. The Unlad Party List and Kalinga Party List from the College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) Student Council presented their programs as well.

Besides the candidates, the Harapan panelists, incumbent Supreme Student Council (SSC) officers together with their moderator, and some The Paulinian staff were also present during the online meeting.

Mr. Francis Calilan (Senior High School Faculty Member and Coordinator), together with Sr. Nicole Dabalus SPC (Vice President for Christian Formation), Ms. Alexa Nuñez (Former Faculty Member of SPU Manila and Catechist), and Dr. Gerardo Guiuan (Head of the Graduate Program in Religious Education) made up this year’s Harapan panelists.

Ms. Nuñez started things off by asking, “In this time of pandemic, can you name three essentials?

What do you think would be the most practical task or function that should be done in order to address the new normal?”

Angelina De Vera, Adhika’s Secretary, answered the question by naming faith, health, and communication as her three essentials.

Meanwhile, Sofiya Llaguno, the Public Relations Officer (P.R.O.) of Agapay, said that she believes people should focus on transparency, leniency, and hope to be able to cope with the new normal.

Focusing on each candidate’s initiatives, Mr. Calilan then asked for some programs that the officers could propose in order to respond to the challenges of the changing educational landscape.

Justin Abaquin (Adhika’s P.R.O.) proposed his platform titled ‘Paulinian Freshmen Welcome,’ while Faith Sibulo (Agapay’s Auditor) highlighted her initiative called ‘The Paulinian Allies’ which is a centralized donation drive.

Other candidates also raised their programs: Pauline Danganan’s ‘PAULikha,’ Christine Pulia’s ‘Mental Health Awareness Month,’ Jane Arabis’ ‘Kaagapay,’and Milcah Baes’ ‘Paulinong Mulat.’

“Ang ‘Paulinong Mulat’ ay ine-establish niya ‘yung political awareness ng mga Paulinian by conducting a voter’s education webinar. We’ll try our best to invite qualified speakers na mas mae-educate ‘yung mga students kung ano nga bang klaseng mga leader ‘yung dapat nating iboto sa susunod na eleksiyon (‘Paulinong Mulat’ can help establish Paulinians’ political awareness through a voter’s education webinar. We will try our best to invite qualified speakers so that they may further educate our students on what should be the type of leader we should be looking for in the next election),” president-hopeful Opiña explained.

Jasmine Kalaw, who is also gunning for the presidency, presented her ‘Kamalayan sa Lipunan’ platform to be able to address this call as well. The abovementioned initiative is an existing platform of the incumbent SSC, which she wishes to continue in the next school year.

“We will advocate to encourage some students and other people to vote and to register to vote. We can publish informative pubmats and articles that can help them in deciding whom to vote and help them find someone who is a very willing and very encouraging leader to help us with our country right now,” Adhika President Kalaw quipped.

A Facebook live viewer posted a query for both the presidentiables, “We all know that only one is allowed to assume presidency, either of you will lose. But, if ever you are that aspirant who won’t be given the opportunity to lead, will you still pursue your platform? How would you pursue it?”

Adhika Party List President Jasmine Kalaw responded to the question by restating her personal platform, which is ‘Sustainability Education for Environmental Development.’ =“My platform, hindi siya kailangang gawin kapag nasa posisyon ka lang (My platform does not need a certain position for it to be done). You can still do it on your own, and then you can influence one person, and that one person can influence his family, his friends as well,” Kalaw stated.

Meanwhile, presidentiable Christel Opiña assured the Paulinians that even if she does not assume the SSC Presidency, she will still work to implement her platform.

“As for me, I believe na whether manalo ako o matalo, marami pa ring paraan para magawa ‘yung mga platform na finormulate namin as a party. Pwede naming i-suggest kung sino man ‘yung mananalo, since sure naman na they are willing to listen sa kung ano ‘yung mga gustong mangyari ng ibang students (As for me, I believe that whether I win or lose in this election, there will still be a lot of ways for us to implement the platforms we have formulated as a party list. We can suggest these programs to whoever assumes office since we are sure that they are willing to listen to the needs of the students),” Christel Opiña said.

The Virtual Harapan 2021 was moderated by incumbent SSC officers Abcydee Gonzales and Franchesca Dychangco and ended with Ms. Elmgay Valeriano’s closing remarks.

“Whoever wins in the election, ang importante is we support one another (Whoever wins in the election, we must remember that what’s important is we support one another),” Ms. Valeriano, Moderator of the SSC and Head of Student Welfare and Development of SPU Manila, said.

The PSG election will commence on April 21 and will be up to April 23 only. The new set of incoming College Council and Supreme Student Council (SSC) officers will be announced on April 26.

Triumph beyond numbers: SSC and its all-women slate

A monumental win indeed, not only for the elected Paulinian Student Government (PSG) officers, but for the female community as well, as the positions in the Supreme Student Council (SSC) are all assumed by women—a feat that has not been accomplished in a while. Results of the April 2123 PSG elections were published on SPU Manila-Supreme Student Council’s Facebook page on April 26, with six out of seven officers coming from the Adhika Party List. Besides the all-women slate of the Supreme Student Council, three out of four college councils have female student-leaders as presidents.

Headlining the set of incoming SSC officers is Jasmine Kalaw, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student who garnered 214 votes, 39 more than her co-presidentiable Christel Opiña from Agapay Party List. Kalaw, who is approaching her second year of student-leadership under the SSC, was this year’s incumbent and soon-to-be-outgoing SSC Assistant Secretary. The Paulinian (TP), the official student publication of SPU Manila, had the chance to hold a one-on-one interview with the incoming president.

Looking back Not until she took office last year as SSC Asst. Secretary did Jasmine Kalaw get used to leading a large community, she told TP. The type of leadership that she had been accustomed to was mostly classroom- and organization-based.

“Naging classroom president na ako, naging classroom officer. E ‘di ‘yun, sobrang natuwa ako, itinuloy ko siya hanggang sa tumakbo ako sa SSC last year. Doon ako nag-start tumakbo for [a] big community, kasi mostly sa classroom lang talaga ako (I became a classroom president and a classroom officer, and that brought me joy. That urged me to pursue student-leadership until I ran for the SSC last year. That was my first-time gunning for a position that will entail governance of a larger community because I was used to leading only in the classroom),” Kalaw stated.

In retrospect, Jasmine said that her A.Y. 2020-2021 experience under the abovementioned council motivated her not only to pursue student-leadership, but to become a better leader as well.

“How [the incumbent SSC] led, how they communicated with the students and with us, their co-officers—that helped me to prepare myself for the future,” Kalaw added.

When asked about her take on the current attacks against women in power, Jasmine took a firm stand against the said persecutions.

“When it comes to people’s opinions, I will respect it. Pero hindi ako papayag na ‘yung opinion nila ay mang de-degrade (I will not permit those degrading comments),” Kalaw exclaimed.

The incoming president also refuted claims of people who say that women cannot run a nation or a community. According to her, women indeed have the ability to not only lead, but to speak out as well, citing Leni Robredo and Risa Hontiveros as examples.

Kalaw was outspoken on the topic of women empowerment, stating that she hopes their recent win could enlighten those who say that “Babae lang sila, anong magagawa nila?”

“Sana makatulong kami to open their minds na hindi sila babae lang. They can do many things, they can help many people, and they can empower the masses),” incoming SSC President Jasmine Kalaw stated.

She capped the topic off by saying that anybody can lead regardless of gender because leadership is about how one can empower, uplift, and help people.

Kalaw, who ran under the aforementioned party, said that they will fulfill this adhika by drafting programs that are all-inclusive.

“Sa lahat ng platforms namin, we will try our best na ma i-include lahat, ‘yung matutuwa lahat (We will try our best to consider everyone when executing our platforms. We will try to craft programs that everyone can enjoy),” she said.

Hurdles during distance learning During Harapan 2021, Kalaw mentioned in one of her answers that she “believes that education is one of the keys to success.”

When asked by TP on how will she help SPU Manila offer quality education to those gravely affected by the pandemic and the effects it brought to learning, she discussed one of their platforms named ‘PAULoad.’

PAULoad is a donation drive that aims to extend financial aid to Paulinians who cannot afford to have a stable internet connection.

Jasmine also said that she, together with the other incoming SSC officers, will try to seek further help from the administrators of the university.

“We will try to ask help from the Marketing Department kung paano kami puwedeng maka-help sa mga walang devices and we will try to make a plan kung kayang mabigyan kahit mga tablets para maka-help sa kanila. Kahit hindi ‘yung mga branded, basta ‘yung stable enough to help them (We will try to ask help from the Marketing Department on how we can give aid to those who do not have the devices

to attend their online classes. We will try to hand out tablets that are stable enough, even the non-branded ones),” Kalaw remarked.

Apart from these connectivity issues, Jasmine also cited the mental and physical exhaustion students experience during distance learning as another problem schools face during the time of COVID. To be able to address this, she said that she plans to propose a one-week break each semester where no asynchronous or synchronous tasks will be assigned to the learners. Kalaw then emphasized that, “Yung iba, kailangan talaga ng pahinga (Others really need the break).”

Abcydee Gonzales, the incumbent SSC President and Kalaw’s previous running mate, also cited inclusivity among the Paulinian community as one of his priority agendas last year.

“Natutunan ko ‘yung mga principles nila, kung paano mag-lead, kung ano ‘yung pwede naming gawin (I learned their principles, I learned how to lead, and what actions we could take),” Kalaw stated when asked how the current set of officers influenced her in her campaign for presidency.

What to expect

On fulfilling their ‘adhika’

Although the incoming SSC slate have not had the chance to formally meet yet, they already have a draft of the platforms they want to implement. ‘Paulinian Freshmen Welcome,’ ‘Kamalayan sa Lipunan,’ ‘National Arts Month,’ and ‘PAUL E-Sports’ were some of the programs outlined to The Paulinian. Kalaw assured SPU Manila learners that the proposed platforms of both parties (Agapay and Adhika) will be taken into consideration.

During the PSG campaign period, the Adhika Party List stated that their ‘adhika,’ or goal in English, is “to promote inclusivity by offering opportunities to all students to showcase their uniqueness and talents.”

The incoming President also guaranteed that they will try their best to reach out to the Paulinians who need help or guidance.

“We will be by their side, magiging boses nila kami (we will be their voice),” Kalaw assured.

The plan is not yet set in stone, however, as she will still consult her co-officers regarding this.

Paulinian freshmen raise funds for homeless, youth

Freshmen students of St. Paul University Manila teamed up with The Phil-Kong Project (TPKP), a Hong Kong-based community organization, to produce “Pagkandili: A Fundraising Concert for our Fellow Filipinos in Need,” an event held on April 25, 2021, through Zoom and Facebook live. Proceeds from the event were donated to ABS-CBN’s “Pangtawid ng Pag-ibig” program and to the Action for the Care and Development of the Poor in the Philippines (ACAP).

1, Bachelor of Music in Music Education (BMME)-1, and Bachelor of Science in Psychology (BSP)-1 to organize the virtual fundraiser to provide care packages to the intended beneficiaries.

At first, the SPU Manila freshmen thought of launching the event only as a requirement for their National Service Training Program (NSTP) class; however, the learners then saw it as an opportunity to help the youth and the homeless at the same time. This motivation pushed the students from Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)-

His speech was followed by performances from Southeastwood Crew (a Hong Kong-based group), together with PAR, Mikha Astom, and Gab Anastacio, who kicked off the concert.

In his opening remarks, EJ Anonuevo, a representative of The Phil-Kong Project, expressed his gratitude for the celebration of unity and the heartwarming support from both local and international audiences.

“Pagharana,” a special segment wherein couples were put in the spotlight on Zoom, was conducted after the event’s first set.

Another special segment called “Pagsaya” started after the fundraiser’s second set. The segment sent two pre-registered strangers into a breakout room together for some ten minutes.

A total of nine performance sets were prepared by the SPU Manila freshmen, some of their non-Paulinian friends, and a number of artists invited by TPKP. Love songs, classical songs, and “hugot” playlists were some of the sets’ themes.

Angelica Roxas, a member of the marketing and public relations arm of Pagkandili’s organizing committee, shared an update on the progress of the fundraiser.

“As of [April 27], 11 P.M., we have donated all proceeds to the accounts of Action for the Care and Development of the Poor in the Philippines (ACAP) and ABS-CBN’s “Pangtawid ng Pag-ibig” program. We raised a total of Php 33,790.50, of which, approximately 70% went to ACAP for the reason that we thought they need more support and funds than ABS-CBN’s program, which is relatively larger,” Roxas, a student of BSN-1, reported.

Aside from the collaboration with The Phil-Kong Project, “Pagkandili” was also made possible through the sponsorship of some local shops.

Paulinian triumphs in International Debate Competition

A first year Marketing Management student of St. Paul University Manila (SPU Manila), Angelina De Vera, bagged second place in the debate competition of International Student Exchange 2020 held on November 26-28, 2020.

The event, spearheaded by the Universitas Tarumanagara (UNTAR), in partnership with various colleges and universities across Asia, had the theme, “Understanding Culture Diversity for Future Success.”

The debate took place on the second day of the virtual event held via Zoom. It assessed the impacts of the current pandemic on the education and business sectors, and whether the pandemic should be viewed as an opportunity or a threat.

With over 500 participants in the webinar, De Vera, together with Francesca Dychangco, a Tourism Management student

from SPU Manila, represented the Philippines in the competition.

“The event enlightened us as to what is truly happening in different countries, may it be positive or negative.

Also, as a student in the business field, it’s an interesting topic to discuss,” De Vera said.

This is De Vera’s first time joining an international contest, but she has been participating in various debates since Junior High School. However, familiar with debate competitions, she admitted that the virtual setting made it difficult to partake in the discourse.

“Super challenging niya kasi ‘yung kaharap mo is screen and syempre, iba pa rin ‘yung face-toface (It was admittedly challenging because you’re just facing the screen of your device; face-to-face setting is indeed different),” she added.

When asked if she would again participate in this kind of competition in the future, she stated that she is more than willing to represent the Philippines again on the international stage.

No stress.

This is how the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU), one of the prominent private universities in the country, announced their decision with regards to admissions during the ongoing pandemic.

If there is one thing that every high school student understands, it would be the importance of preparing for college life. Unfortunately, the reach of the pandemic was so vast it included not only workers, but also supposed-to-be-freshmen.

The stoppage of entrance examinations impacted both application preparations— from gathering reviewers and attending review centers—and the admission process, as evident in schools’ reliance on previous student performance.

Perhaps the most common denominator for the application procedure is the evaluation of the applicant’s previous grades. This requirement may not look that different from pre-pandemic application, since even then, college admissions already indicated minimum grade requirements as prerequisite.

Aside from depending on academic records, the University of Santo Tomas (UST), another wellknown local university, also takes into consideration the extra-curricular records of the student, both of which are then computed to arrive at the University of Santo Tomas Admission Rating (USTAR) score.

Another application format innovated due to the lockdown protocols was introduced by AdMU, which requires applicants to submit an essay, along with the recommendation letters from past teachers and administrators. These, combined with the student’s previous academic performance, make up the application requirements for the said university.

Difficulties surrounding admissions, however, do not concern only the students. Universities are scrambling to continuously improve their online reach.

The administration of the Philippines’ top state university—the University of the Philippines (UP)—is still discussing the steps it will take regarding the system of freshmen admissions. Although they have unanimously decided to discontinue the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT), as of writing, the institution has yet to come up with the final guidelines, which are currently in the process of modification.

It is vital to realize that, like the students, schools also suffer from the pandemic. Not only do they have to streamline their online application procedures, but they also have to make inclusive decisions to ensure the just admission of applicants.

However, if this grade-based application is what it takes for the school to observe safety measures while ensuring reasonable admission procedures, then it will only be a question of efficacy and not fairness. These decisions may be a sad truth for many, but, unfortunately, neither the students nor the universities’ administration can do anything about the situation because the traditional admission system cannot be implemented due to the circumstances set by the pandemic.

If the nature of the process would be examined, however, the next most feasible way of conducting college admissions this year would be online entrance tests. Of course, in a vacuum, this would be ideal for both the colleges and financially capable students. However, digitizing entrance exams can also pose technical difficulties for the school and the takers themselves. Some Philippine universities had begun exploring this option when the pandemic first hit the country, but it was barely successful.

The applicants needed to secure a stable connection to answer the test— a problem that has become evident since the start of distance learning. Digital tests are also far easier to rig compared to traditional pen-and-paper examinations because of the lack of supervision of students taking the test. Online entrance examinations, although ideal for some, have not been an option chosen by many prominent universities for their 2021 admission procedure.

Given all of these circumstances, it is understandable that some people would become outraged by the tedious admission procedures. These decisions made, however complex, could have been handled better if institutions had acted with more sense of urgency. Sure, it is an unfamiliar situation to be in, but if they had made the line of connection much shorter by quickly relaying their proposed plans and decisions, then applicants could have prepared themselves better for the revised procedures.

To progress from this impasse, there is need to address the underlying reason behind all of this ruckus—the COVID-19 response in the country. As we, students, struggle to complete this arduous academic year, let alone apply for the next level, we must also constantly demand accountability from stakeholders who placed us in this situation. But while doing this, we should never let go of the hope that this unfortunate situation could be the last.

A few days before Christmas last year, a ghastly video of a cop shooting a mother and her son circulated online and drew flak on different social media platforms. The situation highlighted other inhumane involvements of the Philippine National Police (PNP), such as police brutality and impunity, all made worse under Duterte’s regime.

On December 20, 2020, Police Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca shot and killed Sonya Gregorio and her son Frank after an argument over the use of an improvised cannon or

“boga” in Paniqui, Tarlac. In the video, Nuezca uttered the words “Tatapusin kita ngayon (I’ll finish you right now),” before pulling the trigger straight to both the Gregorios’ heads. Based on news reports, Nuezca has had several administrative cases against him, all of which were dismissed because of alleged “lack of evidence.” These cases explain the unbothered look on the cop’s face after he delivered the fatal point-blank shot.

Concerning the shooting, PNP Chief Police General Debold Sinas warned the public that taking photos or videos of crime incidents like this could put the witnesses at risk.

In a separate statement, Sinas also claimed that the murder was only an isolated case, and it does not reflect the whole

of the PNP. If we will recall, Sinas, who was still NCRPO Chief back then, was dispraised and charged for violating the Bayanihan Heal as One Act by having a “mañanita” during his 55th birthday held in the NCRPO headquarters. At that time, mass gatherings were strictly banned because enhanced community quarantine was being implemented.

Nevertheless, these issues seem to be easily forgotten since the attention of the media was diverted to the case of Christine Dacera, a flight attendant who was found lifeless after attending a New Year’s Eve party with her friends in Makati.

Every update on the case was monitored and reported to the media. Some consider this

Not much recognition is given to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), arguably the country’s most prominent road, except for the fleeting thought of how much stress it causes Filipino commuters. Little emphasis is also given to the fact that thirty-five years ago, a liberating revolt fired up this main artery of Metro Manila—an uprising that captivated the rest of the world and served as a reminder of democratic freedom and the power of people’s collective action.

The People Power Revolution is one of the most famous acts of political defiance in Philippine history. This event ended the decades of terror and suffering under the dictator, Ferdinand Marcos. Thousands of Filipinos gathered in the stretch of EDSA—united and unfazed, even with the threat of Marcos’ military might. This uprising was the catalyst that made the country a truly democratic nation, after hundreds of years suffering under the oppression of colonizers and ruling classes.

In the current state of the country, there seems to be a recurring pattern of conditions in the time of Marcos’ rule: oppression of marginalized masses, attacks on press freedom, academic censorship, abuse of political power, and human rights violations. Another uncanny resemblance of the martial law era to today’s administration is their leaders—two strongmen.

In a statement, Peter Murphy, Chairman of International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP), said that the Duterte administration “has now gained notoriety as a world-renowned violator of human rights, if not a dictator like Ferdinand Marcos.”

Just last year, Duterte got criticized after he warned the public about a possible declaration of martial law, as he tagged the alleged presence of communist rebels. This communist narrative is the same one President Marcos used when he declared Martial Law in September of 1972.

Also, despite saying that Filipinos should uphold the legacy of EDSA so it will remain relevant in the years ahead, President Duterte himself has never attended any EDSA Revolution commemoration ceremony since he assumed office in 2016. He claims, however, that this is not due to any political issue or affiliation.

Duterte’s Marcos-like ruling and the continuous red-tagging of progressive groups and critics only prove that the current administration is afraid of the power of the masses—as the EDSA Revolution back then proved that it could topple tyrants like Duterte himself. The present regime continues to believe that the said uprising was nothing but an oligarchic manipulation.

As of today, Filipinos are still walking towards the desire to change. There is a notion that the country has been free from oppression and backhanded governing, but the truth is, it never left with Marcos. The shadows of the Filipinos’ past still lurk in the dark and strike at night. There needs to be more palpable changes in the government, economy, and lives of the Filipinos for the Philippines to be truly free.

It is a sincere hope that Filipinos recognize the country’s unfortunate past and use this as ammunition for a more favorable and humanitarian change in their lives. Because this is why Filipinos commemorate EDSA—the revolt that initiated a promise of freedom for all—to remind the masses where collective action can lead to, and that unity can overcome any and all obstacles.

Where art thou, dear officials?

As the end of the year looms over our heads, people are getting antsy over the steady and rapid increase of COVID-19 cases. As of writing, the country now has 436,435 confirmed COVID cases, of which 28,379 are active. In the past months, little to no significant changes in the response to the pandemic have been made.

Perhaps the greatest slap on our country’s face during this pandemic is the lopsided priorities of our government officials in this crucial time.

When news of a vaccine possibly counteracting the virus appeared, the President declared the government’s move: borrowing $1.5 billion. This amount would cover only about 60% of the country’s population and leave millions of other Filipinos in the dark and without the vaccine. Duterte meanwhile claims the herd immunity Filipinos will acquire would be enough to combat the virus.

Amidst the chaos, government officials put their time and energy into disputes with an entertainment company, the arrests of activists, and petty remarks against healthcare workers, who are risking their lives in the front line against the virus.

For instance, this was President Rodrigo Duterte’s statement against people who threaten to violate community lockdown regulations: “My orders to the police and military… if there is trouble and there’s an occasion that they fight back, and your lives are in danger, shoot them dead.”

Meanwhile, there also was Duterte’s earlier statement to healthcare workers’ pleas for two weeks of enhanced community quarantine: “You should do the soul-searching, not us. Kayo, makatulong sana.

Wala kayong magawa kung ’di magreklamo (You should help. You barely do anything but complain).”

It has been approximately a year since the virus hit, and yet, no concrete changes have been seen in the Philippines. The situation only continues to worsen as the economy declines even further. No tangible solutions are implemented, and it is unsure where the government’s priorities lie amidst this pandemic. No direct focus is given on the issue at hand, and the critical issues that healthcare workers have raised are pushed aside for other agenda.

It is uncertain now what the future has in store for the Philippines, with the way things are being handled. There are already millions of Filipinos suffering under the cruel hands of poverty, and the pandemic is adding more pain on top of that hardship.

For years now, bribery has been a common occurrence behind closed doors of several court offices across the country. A part of the system. An accepted norm. A “part of the job,” if you will. Today, nobody bats an eye at this unjust system, which has become the lifeblood of the powerful elite, thriving as part of a larger entity that enables the rich and influential to get away with their crimes.

How is this all connected, you may ask.

Death penalty has become a prevalent topic among Filipino discussion, especially after the heinous video of the merciless police shooting of a mother and her son went viral. The clip destroyed several citizens’ remaining trust in the country’s police force and their capability to handle national crimes.

It is a very contradictory statement, however, to say that you do not trust the police and then go on to demand death penalty for felons who have committed heinous crimes.

The police, being enforcers of the law, can be linked to the judiciary system of the country, as a case handled by an officer is elevated to the court of law, which decides the fate of the defendant.

It would not bode well for the Philippines to push through with capital punishment when there is a huge distrust in the justice system.

If the judiciary, including enforcers of the law in the country, cannot be trusted, and there is access to capital punishment, then what hope do those who are wrongfully convicted have? In fact, it is no surprise that only the wealthy have the resources to defend and protect themselves, but the opposite is true for the masses. Commonfolk today are left to fend for themselves, while those in the upper echelons of society get away scot-free or with a simple slap on the wrist.

Those who are wrongfully convicted are rid of the most basic human right: to live. There are no takebacks in death penalty. Once you take a person’s life, it leaves an irreversible consequence regardless of whether a person is innocent or not. There is no denying that the current system of the country is already rotten. Unfortunately, adding death penalty atop that pile of mess would be another step closer to the imminent downfall of the Filipino nation.

To end the abysmal time that was 2020, the Duterte government figured in yet another episode of its infamous whitewashes, as it tried to defend the illegal vaccination of Duterte’s bodyguards and military men.

On December 26, 2020, during his weekly address, President Rodrigo Duterte claimed that many had already been injected with the Sinopharm vaccine. The President even admitted that majority of the military and Presidential Security Group (PSG) had already been injected with the COVID-19 vaccine. This statement confused the people as Sinopharm, a Chinese state-owned company, at the time, had yet to apply for an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

It turned out that Duterte’s guards had been injected in September last year.

In true Duterte administration fashion, a flock of their allies, including social media trolls, immediately came up with a defense for the blunder.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana admitted that the used vaccines were smuggled, but the intention behind the vaccination justified the act.

Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa also defended the inoculation of the PSG. He even stated that people should thank the illegally-vaccinated men, as they are outlaw heroes. Undoubtedly, there is little to expect from a cop and retired general turned senator.

Ever since the health crisis started, the government’s plan against the pandemic has heavily relied on acquiring the vaccine. President Duterte himself has been blabbering nonstop about potential cures and vaccines that may serve as the “only salvation available to humankind” during this pandemic. And now, when vials of the vaccine are already accessible, the government has still failed to come up with an all-inclusive inoculation program.

29 In addition to being another proof of the administration’s incompetence, these illegal shots further jumble the nation’s vaccination program. As stated in the government’s priority list of who gets the doses first, healthcare workers top the list, followed by indigent senior citizens, remaining senior citizens, the remaining indigent population, and finally, the uniformed personnel. As a result, many frontline health workers have decried the so-called ‘VIP vaccination.’ In addition to this misplacement of priorities, unregistered vaccinations can also result in further illicit immunizations throughout the country, thus jeopardizing the safety of Filipinos.

How can Filipinos even be convinced of the vaccine’s safety and efficacy if the administration justifies under-the-table inoculations?

Dura lex sed lex (The law is harsh, but it is the law) was probably the most used phrase at the height of the ABS-CBN shutdown. Pro-admin accounts often quoted these words to justify the closure of the media giant. Yet, this cover-up proves that if you are the leader’s comrade, you will always receive a free pass. From a police chief’s lockdown violation to a health secretary’s incompetence, and now, his allies’ illicit vaccination—one thing remains clear—‘Tatay’ will always protect them, no matter what.

Dura lex sed lex, only when favorable.

While other countries have begun to announce their transcendent milestone of delivering the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to the public, the Duterte administration continues to showcase its biased perception. This controversy attests to the twisted loyalty of our public servants, who sacrifice nobility just to receive partisan protection.

This land is mine, and this too China’s new “Coast Guard Law” is a proclamation that clearly shows that the Asian power will not stop any time soon in asserting its dominance for economic gain. As a front to defend their claims, the said law now approves the use of taking extreme measures, such as the use of weapons, when their national jurisdiction is being “illegally infringed upon by foreign organizations or individuals at sea.” The problem begins at the blurred definition of what makes their rights being “infringed upon” by others. This situation, if left untouched, will open the floodgates over a whole new level of oppression to be experienced by our local fishermen.

And this is exactly what happened days after the passing of the said legislation. On January 25, a Filipino fisherman was blocked by several Chinese ships from going to a sandbar near Pag-asa Island. The vessel which prevented the man from fishing around the territory belonged to the China Coast Guard. The Philippine military in charge of the area refuted the claim, saying that it was “improbable”—a move that sends another blow to our fisherfolk, and a free pass for China’s harassment.

Another significant part of the rights that they are “protecting” involves their baseless claim over the West Philippine Sea (WPS), that was already ruled as illegitimate five years ago. Assertiveness had never been an issue with China, so much so that they have always one-upped themselves from declaring the 9-dash line rule, China’s demarcation line of territory to stating that the Hague ruling, a tribunal that invalidated China’s claim over the West Philippine Sea, will not be recognized by the Party.

Everyone was, therefore, surprised when President Rodrigo Duterte, who is known for labeling China as a “friend,” stood up for the Philippines at the United Nations General Assembly.

“The Philippines affirms that commitment in the South China Sea in accordance with UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award…

We firmly reject attempts to undermine it,” said Pres. Duterte.

Some viewed this a sign that the Philippines will finally defend its rights in the disputed area; it looked as if the President had already started fighting back for what is truly ours. His statement was met with much acclaim by others as, after all those times when President Duterte expressed his cooperation with China, he will finally step up and initiate a grueling process of defending what we have won.

However, what he said should be backed up by action.

His statement will be taken only in vain if he continues kowtowing to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and declare his usual reasoning for the continued silence as “a way to prevent war.” This idea that China would be willing to initiate a global conflict over the West Philippine Sea is just a mere slippery slope. Beijing cannot start a war, knowing that the outcome would be devastating over the countries that they want to trade with. As such, the President has to defend our land; or else, his statement will fall flat, much like his promise to ride a jet ski to the WPS and plant a Philippine flag there. It is high-time for the President to be true to his words, as China continues to implement laws that would help it lay hands on our waters.

The strongman that is Duterte boasts of having great guts whenever he faces Filipinos.

However, when there is need to protect his country against other nations, he turns docile and passive. At a time wherein China continues to bully the Philippines and other neighboring countries, the demand for a competent and firm leader has become higher than ever. Or else, we will fall into the hands of another tyrant.

Tungong ‘New Normal’

Libo-libong buhay na ang nawala, at ‘di mabilang na kabuhayan na ang na-kompromiso. Ngunit sa tinagal tagal ng panahon, hindi maipagkakailang unti-unti na nating natutunang mamuhay nang may pangamba sa nakamamatay na sakit na ito.

Kamakailan lamang, hindi humigit sa 3,000 ang mga naitatalang bagong kaso ng COVID-19 sa Pilipinas araw-araw. Kung ikukumpara ito sa lagpas 5,000 noong mga nagdaang buwan ay mapapansin ang pagsadsad ng mga bilang ng nahahawaan ng naturang virus. Noong buwan ng Oktubre, nakapagtala ng 25% na pagbaba ang average na bilang ng kaso sa buong Pilipinas. Ngunit sa kasalukuyan, humigit sa 410,000 na ang tala ng kumpirmadong kaso ng Coronavirus sa bansa, pangalawang pinakamataas sa Timog-Silangang Asya.

Kasabay ng pagbaba ng mga kaso ang siyang pagluwag din ng quarantine restrictions. Pagpapahintulot sa non-essential foreign travel, paglabas ng mga menor-de-edad at senior citizen, pag-arangkadang muli ng mga motorsiklo, jeepney at taxi, at pagluwag ng mall restrictions—ito lamang ang iilan sa mga hakbang na ipinanukala ng gobyerno upang lubusan pang makabangon ang naghihikahos nang ekonomiya ng Pilipinas mula sa kalbaryong idinulot ng COVID-19.

Matatandaan ding nauna nang nagbukas ang ilan sa mga tanyag na pook-pasyalan sa bansa, tulad ng Siyudad ng Baguio at Isla ng Boracay. Hindi maipagkakaila ang ginhawang dulot nito sa mga Pilipinong namiligro ang kabuhayan dulot ng community quarantine. Maraming manggagawa sa sektor ng turismo ang mabibigyan ng pagkakataong maibalik muli ang sigla ng kanilang hanapbuhay, bagamat ‘di na kasing-patok ng dati. Ang pagbubukas at pagtataguyod muli ng industriya ng lokal na turismo ay isa ring daan ng pagpapaunlad ng ekonomiya ng bansa na labis na naapektuhan ng umiiral na pandemya.

Babala ng isang eksperto mula sa UP OCTA Research Group, maaaring magdulot ng muling pagtaas sa bilang ng kaso ng COVID-19 sa bansa ang mga pagbabago sa mga patakaran. Ang pinangangambahang muling pagtaas na ito ay nasaksihan na ng Baguio, kung saan lumagpas na sa kritikal na lebel ang kapasidad ng mga ospital.

Sa kabila ng mga pagbabago sa quarantine measures na ito, ang nag-iisang dapat na manatili kailan pa man ay ang maigting na pag-iingat mula sa banta ng Coronavirus. Halos isang taon na nang unang puksain ng pandemyang ito ang pamumuhay sa bansa, at ‘di dapat natin ipagsawalang-bahala ang lahat ng hakbang na ginawa natin sa lumipas na walong buwan. Inaasahan ang muling pagdagsa ng mga tao sa mga kalsada at establisimyento, para magtrabaho o maglibang. Ito na nga ba ang ‘new normal’ na matagal na nating inaasam na makamit? O napilitan lamang tayong mamuhay kahit kapansin-pansin pa rin ang dami ng kaso at taas ng panganib ng virus sa ating bansa?

Marahil ay pagod na sa pamumuhay sa takot bunsod ng COVID-19 ang nakararami sa atin, ngunit hindi pa ngayon ang panahon upang maging kampante. Hindi pa dapat magbunyi, dahil maaaring tumaas pang muli ang kaso kapag hindi napanatili ang mga hakbang na ipinatutupad para makontrol ang virus.

Ang konsepto ng ‘new normal’ ang siyang naging sandigan ng nakararami sa atin na umaasang muling babalik sa dati ang gawi ng lipunan. Tunay ngang malayo na ang narating ng mundo, partikular na ang Pilipinas, mula nang una tayong pasukin ng COVID-19. Ngunit sa kabila ng patuloy na pagbaba ng kaso, tila ‘di pa rin maaninag ang liwanag sa dulo ng lahat ng ito. Imbis na patuloy na mamuhay sa pangamba, mas maigi nang mabuhay tayo nang may pag-iingat at disiplina. Kapares ng komprehensibo at makatuturang panukala ng gobyerno, importante rin ang pagkakaisa at kooperasyon ng lahat upang unti-unti tayong makabangon mula sa krisis sa kalusugan na dinaranas ngayon. Ang bawat isa ay may papel na ginagampanan upang talunin ang kalabang hindi nakikita, ang tagumpay nakasalalay sa pagtutulungan ng lahat.

You were excited and nervous as you entered the gates leading to the school.

It was your first day, and you eagerly looked forward to the classes you’d be attending. St. Paul University Manila was home to countless stories, and it wasn’t hard to believe that because it had been around for so long. You’ve heard some stories yourself. But they didn’t really get to you. Undaunted, you go through your schedule and see your first class: labs.

You quickly navigated the corridors for the comfort room, making a mental note to make the trip quick. Everything seemed normal—the low-lit room and the dirty mirrors, save for the eerie silence. But you did not mind. Not at all.

Well, not yet.

As you were about to leave the room, you heard the faint cries of a baby. You shrugged and assumed it was just a weird sound from the streets outside the university. However, the pained cries got louder and louder, and so did your heartbeat. Despite the peculiarity, you tried to brush it off and went on with your business.

But maybe someone entered? No, it was the strong gust of wind outside.

You looked at your watch to see the time, 1:23 PM. You hurriedly dried your hands down your skirt, only looking down.

As you were about to leave, a strange woman entered, distressed. You could not take a closer look at her face, but you noticed her feet. Bare and dirty. It seemed like she was frantically searching for something, or for someone. And as you turned to close the door to the comfort room, you heard her raspy, whispered singing: “Oh, my darling, oh my darling, Oh, my darling, Clementine, You were lost and gone forever, Dreadful sorrow, Clementine.”

You couldn’t move. Your feet were stuck to the ground, but the singing got louder and louder. Her eerie but surprisingly serene voice was ringing toward your ears, as if she was singing for you. You could imagine her face on the side of your neck while cradling the baby…

Scared and surprised, you rushed back to the laboratory, passing by the babies in the jar displayed at the corner of the room.

“Hey, have you heard about the woman with the baby that lurks around the school?” your classmate asked. “They said the woman had a miscarriage, and her body, along with her baby, was donated to the school. She haunts those who go near her baby, afraid of it being taken away from her.”

You gulped and closed your eyes, only to remember what happened minutes ago…

“Kuya, patambay muna dito, ha?”

“Sige, basta huwag mo na lang buksan ‘yong ilaw.”

4 PM. There was no other sound except the rippling rain on the classroom window and manong janitor’s footsteps as he walked out to the hallway. You locked the door, sat on an armchair at the corner, and began to scroll through your phone as the shadows of the cold afternoon slowly took over. Your friend from the men’s volleyball team was taking a while, training in the gymnasium. Good thing manong was kind enough to let you stay inside while you waited.

You glanced at the door, zipped up your jacket, and let out a slow, lazy yawn. You stared back at the dark void of the room and began to feel cozy, snuggling with your jacket. The weight of your eyelids was pressed against your head, and as they closed shut, something odd made your eyes open.

There was this jumpy, annoying, clacking noise coming from the doorknob, as if someone was trying to barge in. It went on as you checked the time on your phone, 4:32. Then when you looked at the door, the noise stopped.

You knitted your eyebrows, assuming that you’re probably just hearing things because you were sleepy, then saw a couple of your readings scattered on another chair. You shook your head slowly as you stood up and began putting stuff back in your bag. The bag zipped after you slid the last bunch of papers in. You heard the clacking sound again. Then more clacking. Noisier.

Quicker. More aggressive. You pulled your hair back, took a deep breath, then glanced at the door.

It stopped. Again. You made a couple of quick blinks, gave your hands a shake, then sat back by the corner. You’re tired, probably just tired. Maybe you just need a couple of memes to calm down.

You grabbed your phone. Again. The light from your phone gleamed against your face as you scrolled again until---

Gono

The crazy clacking went back. You became unhinged. You tried to focus on the memes as the hitting of metal against wood kept on from the not so distant door. Ignore it. It will stop. You may just be hearing things. But then it got wilder and wilder, as you kept on scrolling through your phone. You became more annoyed, disturbed, and tense as the sound seemed to signal that the door will break any time soon. Nope. Not looking. You took another deep breath and then--“Hoy, buksan mo ‘to! Tapos na kami!” Your friend’s voice resonated above the clacking.

You let out a forced chuckle, then stood up to open the door.

“Ang init-init, bakit ka naka-jacket?”

“Ha? Nakabukas pa aircon, ‘di mo ramdam?” You said and turned to the aircon.

Your jaw dropped.

“Anong nakabukas? ‘Di ba pinatay ni Kuya ‘yan kanina noong nagsisilabasan mga estudyante?” You gave him a slow confused nod.

Your friend slumped on the chair by the corner where you had sat. You were about to ask how training went, when your friend turned his head towards the door. Then suddenly ran out.

“Hoy, teka, saan ka pupunta?” You followed.

Along the hall, down the stairs, your friend kept running. You tried to catch up, but he was too fast. This was the way back to the gym, you slowly realized. Slowing down, you catch your breath while still keeping him in sight. You then caught him on the other end of the gym, on his knees, near the trash bin. You beckoned to him, and he walked back to you.

“Bakit ka tumakbo?”

“Hinabol ko ‘yong batang sumabay sa ‘kin pagpasok ng room. Nahuli ko ‘yon kanina eh, kinakalkal ‘yung doorknob.”

They told me, “Don’t look back when you walk through the halls after 7 PM.” But I didn’t listen.

I was a rule breaker, and I regret being one. I regret not listening. I regret going home late and walking through that hallway where the only thing I could see was the light at the other end, and the only sounds I could hear were my own breathing and the tapping of my shoes against the hard-tiled floor. I regret stopping in my tracks when I felt a heavy breath creep against my neck, sending shivers down my spine.

My mind went haywire at the thought of not being alone in a dark, silent hallway. It wasn’t exactly abandoned, but it had big windows at the side where one could see his reflection when he walked on that pathway, and with the wandering thoughts of not being alone, seeing a reflection wasn’t deemed fit in that type of situation. Maybe it was just my hallucinations, or my anxiety at its peak, or maybe… maybe I wasn’t alone.

“Don’t look over your shoulder,” was what they always said, but it’s exactly what I did. The moment I did, I felt my blood run cold when I saw another figure, someone who looked like me, with a sinister smile plastered on his face—the type of smile that would give you goosebumps or send shivers down your spine. My eyes were close to midnight black, and I felt as if death itself was reflected in them as they stared through my soul.

I regret looking back.

Because now I’m stuck here, running through the halls, trying to warn the other students to not make the same mistake as I did, but they can’t hear me. I am a wandering soul, replaced by the figure I saw that night.

By Poline Cusi As the new school year faces a sweeping shift from traditional to online learning, students’ mental health is strained at an alarming rate, as each one experiences a different struggle brought by the new class set-up.

The evolved system has inadvertently brought an immense problem that seems to be only getting worse. With the heavy workload, extra effort required, lack of resources, it appears that this shift in education has created a challenging time for many.

Students, for instance, are feeling strained, demotivated, and anxious about day-to-day requirements. Isolation, financial concerns, and health issues due to the increased screen time seem to only make matters worse.

And it is not only students, but teachers as well, that are feeling burnt out. Teachers are facing bigger responsibilities in this significant change caused by the pandemic, as they play the role of facilitators of the learning experience.

Simply put, it is difficult for a lot of us to focus on studying or working, as our minds are pre-occupied with numerous things.

This time of crisis has also led to uncertainty and hopelessness for several people. Many are overwhelmed with heightened levels of fear and anxiety. It is challenging to take care of one’s mental health in a situation like this, so we must give importance to it more than ever.

According to Dr. Sudha Rani, an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in the Institute of Mental Health, our physical well-being and mental health are closely associated with each other. In fact, it has been proven that depression leads to heart and cardiovascular diseases. Poor mental health also affects one’s behavior negatively and leads to health issues and social problems.

Our mental health, thus, is a vital part of ourselves and our life; that is why we must always give importance to it.

Taking a break recharges our mind and body. Like a computer, we all need to reboot sometimes when we have to deal with too much work. Once we have recharged, we feel refreshed and ready to start a new set of work.

In an article titled “Research-Tested Benefits of Breaks,” Youki Terada stated that students are easily distracted, but taking short breaks can help them focus and increase their productivity, thereby reducing stress.

Taking a break can be done in simple ways. Taking a break can take a whole day, a few hours, or one quick nap. It is simply the feeling of being refreshed and relieved of your troubles and worries. Consider taking a quick walk, a short trip to a convenience store, or an afternoon of listening to your favorite playlist.

Try reading your favorite book, binge-watching, cooking or baking, sleeping or taking long naps, and more. It is always good to take a break once in a while –to refresh your mind and clear your thoughts.

Some days just feel like we have been too caught up with work and school, especially during these times of the pandemic. And right now, it is also extra draining to do our responsibilities. Indeed, we still—and must—prioritize our well-being.

Sure, we have done so much and there is still so much more to be done, but our body is our most prized possession, and it needs to breathe too! You owe it to yourself. You deserve to take some time off.

So… Go! Take a break.

One Step Backwards

It comes out of nowhere–those strange moments when you are barely strong enough to rise and move forward; when the warmth of your blanket is tugging constantly as a result of undiscovered rest; and when the only means of escape for a restless person like you is to sit down and listen to the melody of life, stare out the window, and let the time pass while doing nothing.

The lingering silence keeps creeping into the four corners of your cramped room, with the noise arising from the back of your mind. Endlessly, you ask yourself the unquestionable. You try to uncover the shrouded mysteries of what lies ahead and untangle the cold hard truths of life, valiantly while contemplating on your own untold stories.

Unconsciously, you realize that you’ve been neglecting the exhaustion that has been filling you–overwhelming pending requirements that you have to finish within the week. You’re tired of constantly throwing paper planes, which keep landing on books and pens scattered on your desk. Caffeinated beverages remain by your side, and the only light you see comes from your device’s screen inviting you to succumb to all the distractions. You constantly remind yourself to turn off the phone and spend time alone. But you are too busy, you tell yourself, and endlessly chased by things you have to do. Information keeps bombarding your way, but you say to yourself that you are simply too tired to move.

In these dreary moments, stare at yourself in the mirror and remind yourself to focus on what is meaningful. Remember, it is all right to cast away the weight, or be lost in your own thoughts. Soon you’d realize that the past few months, you have been overlooking the most important thing: yourself.

Dare to embrace the comfort of solitude. Rejuvenate your mind. Shut off all the noise once in a while. Keep reminding yourself that life is a long-distance race and not a sprint, and if you do not pace yourself, you might hurt yourself midway.

So, to whoever is reading this—it may seem like shadows of fatigue are chasing you in a daily race.

But allow yourself to step back and take a deep breath after a long day. Find moments of calm when you must do nothing other than press the shutdown button. Search for yourself if needed. And if you feel anxious about taking that pause, remember the serendipity you will attain as an exchange.

Don’t be afraid… to take a step back.

Typhoon Survivors: The Roofed and The Unroofed

You lie on your bed, with the television reporting a new typhoon that may landfall tomorrow. The weatherman declares Signal No. 3 in your area. Instantly, your first thought is: “YES! SUSPENDED BUKAS!” You jump with joy as the things you have been longing to do come rushing into your head. You start going through your list, getting ready to set aside all responsibilities—as this is the time for you to relax.

You lie on your bed, thinking of how you do not have to worry about waking up early tomorrow. You enjoy the bed weather to your heart’s content. In the morning, you start skimming through Netflix, deciding on which movie to watch, would it be Horror? Romance?

Comedy? Action? It appears you cannot make up your mind, but then you look out the window, watching the heavy rain gushing down on the streets and the trees panicking in the wind. So, you think: “Suspended na naman ‘yan bukas, ang lakas ng ulan e.”

With that in mind and all your movies lined up, you start getting hungry…contemplating if you will order food online or just cook your own.

Later, the doorbell rings, and a man is shouting: “Delivery po!” You rush towards the door only to see the container of your food damp. This angers you, causing you to scold the soaking delivery man. He apologizes as he tries his best, barely even making it through the rain, and yet you close the door on him.

After that enraging encounter, you proceed to your movie marathon in the comfort of your bed. You are feeling every chuckle that comes out of your mouth, and the amusement in your eyes certainly twinkling as you are now having the time of your life. At the end of the day, you release a sigh of satisfaction and exclaim: “Sana bukas ulit!” You end your day with a big smile in contrast to the loud thunderous rain.

But from somebody else’s point of view...

Your first thought is: “Hala yung bubong namin baka masira!” Your heart thumps with anxiety and agitation. You pace restlessly in your bedroom, thinking what you can do, what you will do if the flood enters your home and the wind crashes on your roof. You try to lie on your bed, but the thunder keeps banging your eardrums, deafening you with warnings as it gets more and more violent. You cover your ears as fear starts to crawl into your system, making you restless and unable to sleep that night. Worry fills your heart as you hear your siblings cry, frightened by the howling wind. How long will this last? Minutes? Hours? Days?

In times like these, we often forget that a storm is a serious calamity, when people can die, people can lose their homes, and people can lose hope. It is a time when all of us are affected, but some of us are suffering. All of us experience storms, but not all of us experience death and losses caused by storms.

All of us have class suspensions, but not all of us have to be suspended from a roof just to get away from the rising flood.

You are bombarded with anguished thoughts, and all of a sudden, you hear a voice from outside: “SAKLOLO! TULONG!” Your eyes widen as you witness your neighbor drowning from afar. His screams get weaker by the second as the flood continuously and mercilessly pounds against him, his grip on a thin branch, the only thing keeping him between heaven and earth. Your feet are glued to the floor, you cannot even move, it all feels so surreal…his grip, it is gone…he lets go.

You hear cries and screams outside your house, screams of pain, agony, and suffering echoing for miles. Your feet are cold, like soaking in a tub of ice. You look down and you realize the flood has gotten into your house. All of you scramble to save your belongings, only to see the flood getting higher and higher. It will all be useless, you realize. The roof, the roof is all you have…you realize that you are now unroofed. Tears run down, you look around, sobbing with a hoarse voice, saying: “Tama na po…wala na ’kong bukas.”

As individuals, we cannot do anything about the storm; we cannot stop it; and we cannot control it.

But if we are ‘roofed’ citizens, the least we can do is to empathize with the ‘unroofed’ survivors. We should realize that when we wish for a suspension just because we are not in the mood to go to class, there is a family somewhere that is getting soaked because of the strong rain. We should realize that when we order food online to get delivered to our doorstep, the courier- driver is willing to get soaked just to keep our food dry. We should realize that when we complain about our services and electricity being down, workers risk their lives to climb up wet electric posts to bring us service.

Whether we are roofed or unroofed survivors, it is our choice to be relevant in society, regardless if we are privileged or not. In our own little ways, we can reach out and help.

Yes, Filipinos are resilient, we always survive, but would it not be much better if all Filipinos thrive?

With the current situation of our country, mental health has been one of the most important factors of an individual’s stability. To have unstable mental health is quite common, especially for today’s generation, and that’s okay.

Gaining mental stability is a process, but it is not impossible. To you, whoever is reading this, you will be okay. And as time passes, you will find yourself attaining the mental stability you yearn for, but you have to trust the process.

“Sana all mataas ang grade!”

Always remember that our grades do not define our intelligence, and they do not define who we are. All of us are smart in our own ways and have our own ways of showing it.

“Sana all minamahal nang totoo!”

Everyone deserves love, whether it be family love, friendly love, or romantic love. Yes, everybody deserves it. There are people out there who truly love us for who we are, even the little things about us.

Even though sometimes we do not feel it, someone out there loves us for who we are inside and out.

The stress caused by the pandemic, typhoons, as well as academic requirements, and other personal problems have been too much for a lot of people lately. We see so many posts online telling us to look at the positive side, making us want and crave that feeling of happiness we used to have before the quarantine. However, aspiring to be happy 24/7 is just plain toxic positivity. If you’re sad or angry, then that’s totally fine. We are all humans that feel.

Being anxious and worried is fine, as it is just another emotion. It’s okay not to be okay.

“Sana all may jowa”

With different films and series portraying romantic relationships in modern-day media, people, most especially teenagers, become focused on the idea of having a special someone. But the thing is, do we really need a significant other? A lot of people envy those who are in a relationship, as though it is the main source of happiness and contentment. However, it isn’t. Staying single could be just as enjoyable as having a boyfriend or girlfriend. You do not need someone to complete you. Enter a relationship only when you are ready, and be sure of your feelings for the other person and of his for you.

“Sana all maganda”

Society has a set standard when it comes to beauty.

This is portrayed not only through movies and TV shows, but as well as in the countless advertisements and magazine covers that highlight and glorify the slim figure, pale skin, long straight hair, and the list goes on and on. Dozens of products on the market capitalize on the insecurities of people. But guess what, even the most beautiful person in the world, by society’s standards, still feel insecure. The only reason you feel ugly is because you don’t meet the standards set by society and media, but those aren’t meant to be followed by everyone. They are just that, standards.

You are beautiful regardless of the shape of your nose, the color of your skin, or the contour of your lips. It doesn’t matter what the rest of the world thinks, because what’s important is how you view yourself. After all, beauty is subjective.

We are all smart in our own ways. It might not always be in terms of academics. But within ourselves, there is always that one thing we are good at. Be proud that you get to learn different things–be they skills, interests, or values.

“Sana all kayang makatulong” There’s no such term as discrimination in helping people. Everyone can extend his or her hand in some way.

Every day is an opportunity to do an act of kindness for others. An example of this is teaching someone in an area where you consider yourself knowledgeable and experienced. With this in mind, learning should not end in the four corners of the classroom; everyone must be open to discovering life lessons outside of it.

“Sana all mayaman”

Riches or material objects do have an impact on us, specifically, in fulfilling our needs. But, is being rich enough? No. We cannot attain everything; we cannot buy everything. Perhaps to be stable enough to treat ourselves and help others could be a goal. Being rich comes in different forms, not just money. One day, we’ll be able to achieve those riches by doing a great job in what we do. We don’t have to be a billionaire; just do what makes us happy, and money will follow. Besides, what can money do if we’re not even happy?

We are all great with the things that we love. All of us have special skills or talents that others, too, aspire to achieve. Keep on learning; being great does not happen overnight.

“Sana all nasasabi tunay nilang nararamdaman”

Nowadays, some people have built a monster inside their minds, perhaps because of past experiences, which endlessly strike fear and hinder them from showing their true feelings to others. Sometimes, these thoughts dominate a person for a long time.

Let’s face it. It is not easy to open up to someone about the things that bother you, even to the person that you have an intimate relationship with.

We would like to leave you with the famous quote by the poet Federico Garcia Lorca, “Burning with longing and keeping silent is the greatest punishment we can impose on ourselves.” There will come a time when you can let someone know how you truly feel. But in this arduous step that you will take, always remember that your emotions at this moment are valid. Do not rush. But also, fear not and do not let your significant words remain unsaid.

“Sana all confident”

A person’s confidence cannot be gained in one snap.

You have to build yourself up, but at the same time, accept your flaws and weaknesses. This could take a long time. However, once you accomplish this laborious step, the confidence you’ll gain will benefit you in the long run. You do not have to be like someone you see on posters, TV, or magazines. Be yourself, as you do not need everyone’s approval to be beautiful or accepted. Soon, everything will follow, but it starts with seeing it within yourself.

Soulja Boy released the song “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” back in 2008, and it couldn’t seem more fitting to our situation right now.

But isn’t it funny that the more constrained we are, the more we crave for something? Heightened feelings of frustration are all over those who cannot express their love virtually. Well, how do you expect someone to cruise easily towards something that happened in a wave?

Lockdown and quarantine have truly tested relationships of all types.

Some were slammed shut while some flourished. But the real question here is, “Do you know how to love?”

If in the first place, you do not, I guarantee you that love in lockdown is real hard work—and not as easy as sending “thinking of you” texts and emails. It is something that takes more effort to keep your sanity intact.

I am pretty sure you have heard about the five love languages. There has been a scatter of quizzes that are said to tell where you fall under.

But here are some ways, although gimmicky, by which you can show your love based on these languages:

Deep conversations are crucial to happiness. People love talking about themselves. In return, we listen. We can get a deeper understanding and be a better friend, child, or lover. But make sure to give responses compassionately.

An in-depth conversation happens when you talk about how you FEEL and connect with the other person.

Name it “Quality Attention.” It might fit the description better.

Actions Are Better than Words

It is always better to show than tell. Take actions that go above and beyond to make others feel your love towards them. Do things spontaneously or without asking or being asked. Some acts supersede expectations.

Want an example? Wash the dishes...without being asked.

The whole “they should know how much I love them, so I shouldn’t have to say it” approach won’t cut—some need to hear it consistently. Genuine intentions and emotions behind those words are part of the qualification. One does not need to be Romeo to profess one’s love down the street. A simple approach is good enough.

And...if you’re not good at expressing your emotions through words, the lockdown is the best time to practice.

This can be hard to show right off the bat, especially when protocols ask you to distance yourself.

But video chats have made it possible to be together when you’re not literally together. Don’t you ever see some things online and immediately think of the person you love? May it be that air fryer your mom wants or the lipstick that your sister’s eyeing? There are different types of love that exist in our world.

There are types that you feel for the important people in your life, and there are others that describe the type of love you give or receive.

It’s difficult to point out exactly what kind of love we feel for a particular person. There are times when we find it confusing to sort out our feelings.

At times, we’re just quick to classify something as “love” when we’re overjoyed, mistakenly considering “kilig” as true love. And if it fails, one major consequence is that what one feels for a certain person tends to die down easily and fast.

That’s why we made a list of the different types of love we think people should be aware of. Hopefully, this list can help you assess your relationships before you make the slightest or even grand life-changing decisions. Who knows? Maybe you’ll also discover an existing love in your life that you didn’t even realize was there before. So, go ahead and start reading!

It’s also considered as practical love since an individual’s intention in this kind of love is to meet one’s needs and have in mind what they are getting out of the relationship. However, this type of love may change over time as the bond deepens.

PHILIA

By Ramona Mallari When things are rough and individuals are at the peak of their emotions, they often tend to share these moments with a friend whom they have known for a long time—someone they wouldn’t hesitate to share their true feelings with. This affection is called Philia—a type of love that’s commonly seen among friends who have endured difficult times together. This love has matured to the point where each party can readily point out the defects in the other, helping them both change for the better. In this kind of love, friends display unselfishness and fondness for each other, as each tries to make the other happy and comfortable. It is not limited to showing care and respect in an intimate friendship.

People can also bestow it through warmth, thoughtfulness, and empathy to fellow humans.

LUDUS

Some see it as a form of commitment, some would define it as something that can bring excitement to their life, while some would consider love as an easy, but at the same time, complex game. The feeling of being able to talk and play around with anybody, or get the attention that they crave from anyone they want it from, gives these people satisfaction. Ludus, or playful love, is the type of love that one would usually observe in people who tend to flirt a lot, or from those who don’t take the idea of love seriously. This type of love usually revolves around flirting, attention, and teasing between two individuals that are less likely to get easily attached to each other. It can lead to a casual relationship that doesn’t involve commitments of any sort.

By Angel Jhen Genuino Love starts in the home, the familiar sense of longing and passion. When you smell your mother’s flowers or the scent of your father’s cooking, it makes you want to go home and bond with them.

It is the warmth you yearn for especially when you’re far. Storge or familial love is evident in our culture. This type of love is worth cherishing because most of us are often with our families, especially while on quarantine. There might come a point when it feels strange to be affectionate towards them, but it’s still valid. We all have different love languages and that’s okay. This may not apply to everyone, but familial love can be felt for yourself, for your friends, and even for your pets. The thing is, family means everything—the ones who guide you, care for you and accept you for who you are.

But always keep in mind that everyone can be your family, but not everyone can give you a home.

AGAPE

By Trinity Pablo Love takes form in all sorts of entities, definitions, and even objects. But we must also remember that with different types come different levels. Agape is known to be the highest and purest type of love because it is defined as selfless or unconditional love. This love always leads back to God, who gave us His only Son, Jesus, who sacrificed His life to save us from our sins. Jesus’ act of sacrifice showed His selflessness, as He was willing to give His life for humanity and save people from sin so that each person can live an eternal life with God. Agape, rather than being brought about by emotions and feelings, revolves more around willingness, commitment, and faithfulness— which is why some call it pure, because of the untainted intentions that it involves.

PHILAUTIA

We seek validation—for someone to love us—but to do that, we must love ourselves first. Philautia, or self-love, is the type of love that not everyone is capable of. It takes time and motivation to embrace our true selves fully. But this type of love also makes us stronger. It gives us the courage to face the endless possibilities of happiness and defeat.

Loving yourself is a way to make yourself feel more alive. It’s both a process of growing and accepting your inner demons: the cave you passed through, the voice you left unheard. You need to accept both. It is who you are. It is what makes you unique from other people.

EROS

By Mikaella Delmoro Contrary to the common belief that Eros is the type of love that is erotic and sexual, it actually just focuses on the romantic side of love. Everyone has his or her unique way of showing love and adoration for another, and Eros is the type that showcases love through physical acts of affection, such as hugging, kissing, and holding hands. One could also show this through compliments or words of praise. In a sense, we become closer to our loved ones through these physical touches. These acts of affection can contribute to the strengthening of feelings and bonds.

MANIA

By Mikaella Delmoro Contemporary media, such as films and literary novels, often romanticize possessiveness and excessive jealousy.

Because of this, many viewers depict it as something romantic. However, it is simply a borderline obsessive love called Mania. This is often seen when one person loves another on a more intense level, creating an imbalance and lack of trust in the relationship. A relationship can become unhealthy and toxic once you let paranoia devour it. So instead of obsessing over your partner, to avoid the Mania type of love, you must stop overthinking and be more mindful of your actions. At the end of the day, it all boils down to faithfulness and honesty.

Platonic and Familial Love: Don’t Underrate It on February 14!

It’s once again that time of the year when people are obsessed with the idea of love. Restaurants are packed with couples on dates, while romantic love songs play left and right. People prepare flowers and chocolates as gifts for their significant others and of course, several social media timelines will be filled with cheesy posts of couples expressing their feelings.

However, what is there to do for those who aren’t in a relationship? Are they allowed to celebrate Heart’s Day as well?

The answer to that is yes. Of course, they can.

Whenever February 14th lurks around the corner, people immediately think of romantic relationships and gestures for their boyfriend or girlfriend. However, platonic and familial love is just as important to celebrate during this joyous occasion. Why limit ourselves to one kind of love and sulk about how we don’t have any date for Valentine’s when we could simply enjoy friendly dates with our barkadas or hang out with our families? Love should not be limited to the romantic type but embrace other kinds as well.

There are many things you can do to enjoy the season of love together with your friends and family. You could hold a movie marathon of cheesy rom-coms, or even action and horror films together (could be done through zoom because of the pandemic), dress up and go on a completely platonic date with your friends (again, can be done online), or maybe even prepare some presents and exchange gifts as if it were Christmas again (you can opt for Grab and Lalamove as your mode of delivery). If you enjoy baking, then make some sweets for your siblings. Maybe cook something for your dad, or sing for your mom. It doesn’t have to be something grand or extravagant, but rather, something that shows your utmost love for them. Remember that despite the pandemic, being creative and improvising can still make this Valentine’s Day special.

It is understandable to feel somewhat envious of people celebrating their relationships online especially during Valentine’s Day. Oftentimes, some people would become bitter or sulky over the fact that they did not score a date, but I think it is time to change that. Celebrate with your friends and family instead and have a wonderful time during the 14th as every other couple would.

After all, love is for anyone and everyone to enjoy.

Girl, Persist!

This is for all women, and men too, out there.

“Cry like a girl,” “punch like a girl,” and “run like a girl”—these are phrases we often hear and would often hit a nerve, especially in a society dominated by an era of patriarchal supremacy.

But while these phrases sound “normal” for some, what is not okay is how doing something “like a girl” becomes an insult to both men and women.

Since when did it become derogatory to do things the “feminine way”? And why are “feminine” activities synonymous to doing something badly or poorly? Is it because one does not act according to the unrealistic standard of men, that a woman is discerned as weak?

A woman’s nature is something to be proud of and embraced utterly, and this sexism towards women must be redefined in today’s society. To be “like a girl” should be a badge that we can wear with entitlement.

While we celebrate women of all ages every day, this Women’s Month, we especially want to give them the tribute they deserve.

We give due appreciation to their numerous, yet often overlooked contributions—highly regarded babaylans during the pre-colonial period, women who fought in revolutions for freedom, and every woman today who continues to fight against gender oppression.

Without them, today’s women hold no platform to be part of conversations that could change our world.

We put our own definitions to who we are.

So, no matter how you identify your gender, remember:

A GIRL is a leader, a pioneer, a homemaker, and a trailblazer.

She is essential to the building of a nation and to steering humanity to a promising path and future.

And that same GIRL carries the motivation and drive to help those future generations to gain a real sense of self.

To “cry like a girl” does not mean you are weak, but simply, you are a human being with emotions and are not afraid to express them.

She, amidst the demeaning labels and constant humiliation throughout history, has survived—and to this day, continues to persist!

To “punch like a girl” does not mean you have no power, as strength is not always gauged by physical capabilities.

So, the next time you are called out for doing something “like a girl,” be proud. Hold the title with courage, compassion, strength, and wisdom—because being compared to these brave and bold members of society is most definitely not something to be ashamed of.

To “run like a girl” does not mean you lack the endurance to perform with might and determination.

It’s Been a Year, Quaratine: Looking Back at March 2020

A year has passed since the Philippines was first put into quarantine as the life-threatening disease, COVID-19, was detected present in our country. Ever since, the country has been through huge adjustments and a variety of quarantine regulations. This caused a sudden flood of activities for each person affected by the lockdown. Some tried out new hobbies, while others opened new businesses.

Let us travel back to when it all started.

What students thought would be a two-week suspension turned into a year—and counting. The pandemic and quarantine were unexpected, too unexpected that people did not realize that they were already spending their last “usual” days before the new normal started. Face-to-face classes turned to online; daily commutes transformed into all-day stay at home sessions; face masks and face shields became a necessity; and most of all, every person had to go through major adjustments for his/her own health and safety.

At the start, students cheered as the President announced that school would be suspended for a week.

Many downplayed the pandemic at its onset—seeing the presence of COVID-19 as a mere scare. This happened around March, close to the last remaining weeks of the school year and while graduation preparations were in full swing. But as COVID-19 cases rapidly increased in Metro Manila, the quarantine kept getting extended, and students had to finish the rest of their school year on their gadgets instead of being in their respective classrooms. Graduation plans were not spared. The rites veered to online, with studentsʼ pictures and achievements flashed on the screen instead of them personally marching up the stage and receiving their medals. It was indeed a most trying adjustment, as students were suddenly thrust into a very strange set-up.

As students started adjusting to their new environment, employees, likewise, were put into a similar, yet distinct situation. The quarantine implemented strict policies wherein the only businesses that could operate were those that sold necessities like food and medicine. Businesses such as those under food and dining retail, malls, clothing, and entertainment were not allowed to operate. This led to the loss of employment for several Filipinos. Many suffered, and they tried to look for other ways to earn—such as applying for online jobs or opening their own online business.

This was when the sudden spike of online businesses started. With the quick wit and flexibility of Filipinos, online businesses started to open in every city, platform, and industry—from students wanting to learn about business and becoming independent, to adults who needed financial help. Each business had its own uniqueness and flavor, which truly showed the resilience and creativity of Filipinos.

With jobs lost, graduations cancelled, and products hoarded, everything was thrust into chaos by the pandemic. As we look back, the quarantine that has held us for so long is definitely not a fun ride, and it is something that we would never want to go through again. The Philippines and its people will surely remember this time as an era that showed everyone’s true colors. But if anything, the pandemic is also a reminder of how coping with every situation is a test of our strength and limits, and amidst the daunting trials lie the challenge to march on.

According to Mhariane Cruz, a volunteer of Tugon Ph, it was the height of Bagyon Ulysses when the relief operation program started.

Despite the adversity, the program also gathered volunteers across the Philippines, mainly because of the people’s collective desire to extend their help to those who experienced the tragic event. With the considerable amount of time, effort, and dedication they have spent, it becomes possible to reach out to Cagayan, Marikina, Rodriguez, Rizal, and Legazpi, Albay where the storm landed.

As Tugon Ph is already growing outside the country, it is worth noting that they were planning to legalize the group in the future.

Not to recognize, but to drive other people to be part of their fervent advocacy of making life beautiful for others.

These all prove that even the tiniest actions can bring light to people who have passed through a tunnel of darkness for so long that makes them believe that the next day will never come again.

“The projects we are preparing are not enough to reduce stress, the students also need someone to talk to vent-out the weight of distance learning,” Gonzales added.

With these simple but empowering words, we would like to leave you with a famous quote by the author Steve Maraboli. “A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal.”

Even though Earl, Julia, Berna, and the Tugon Ph team were also victims of the COVID-19 tragedy, their persistent voice endeavors to come out. To let the voices of people who cannot speak for themselves be heard amidst the 2020 crisis. Through ups and downs, a compassionate and empathetic heart will always remain.

On the other hand, Abcydee Gonzales, a student leader, shared how communication has been a means for him to fulfill his duty as a student body and active citizen.

According to Gonzales, being a leader in this unfamiliar situation was not a piece of cake for him either. But with access to various social media platforms, he was able to constantly check his classmates and the whole Paulinian Community by posting updates on the Supreme Student Council page.

PauliCats, at Home in SPU Manila

Amidst the pandemic, we must admit that at some point in our lives, we felt like our homes were prison cells, and everything that we had planned and hoped for either fell apart or never materialized. It was, above all, mentally draining, with the concurrence of online classes and family matters at the top of our struggles. Luckily, though, a beacon of hope shines brightly to keep those lonely days at bay: our pets. These friends have kept us company and never failed to put a smile on our faces (save for the days they made a mess and caused you even more stress). They have made the loneliest days of quarantine more bearable, and in turn, we gave them all the love and care we could give.

But as we spend time pampering our pets at home, we tend to forget that millions of stray animals roam around the streets without homes or food.

According to a study conducted by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), there are over 12 million stray cats and dogs across the nation. It is sad to know that a big percent of these animals are either euthanized or die of hunger or injury in the pounds.

Moreover, pet shelters are struggling to provide for our fourlegged friends because of the decline in donations and adoptions.

We tend to forget that amidst this pandemic, it is not only we, humans, who are struggling. Stray pets, too, need our help. Fortunately, St. Paul University Manila has taken a step forward to give these animals the home they were deprived of.

The University has taken in stray cats that they fondly call the PauliCats of SPU Manila. In partnership with CARA (Compassion and Responsibility for Animals) Welfare Philippines, an animal protection organization, the University has safely spayed, neutered, and vaccinated our feline friends to make sure that they are healthy and safe for the people around them. They even have their very own Cat Condo where they can be easily taken care of and be carefully observed by the staff.

The PauliCats of SPU Manila has a Facebook page of the same name dedicated to them. St. Paul University Manila hopes that, through sharing photos of the PauliCats, they can “awaken compassionate hearts and ignite community awareness to help improve the lives of stray/feral animals.”

Aside from photos, the page also shares informative posts about cats and dogs daily. They help raise awareness on how we can be responsible pet owners, encouraging the peaceful coexistence between humans and animals.

SPU Manila AADT Students Back in the Creative Labs with Malik-Laya Year 4!

This school year’s Arts and Design Track (AADT) students of St. Paul University Manila’s Senior High School Department have recently launched their take on the yearly tradition of Manlilikhang Malaya (Malik-Laya), an event that aims to showcase the talents and creativity of art students through various forms—visual, literary, and performing arts.

Despite the restrictions brought about by the pandemic and the online class set-up, the students found a way to make it work. The team made use of online platforms to engage in Zoom workshops and online meetings and maximized social media platforms to present their works and performances. Despite the struggles of the new normal, they made use of their resourcefulness and creativity to convert the once face-toface tradition to an online success!

The team started off with the release of a new logo on February 6, derived from and inspired by the logo made by last school year’s AADT batch. A video trailer was later posted on the official Malik-Laya Facebook page as a teaser for the audience, a glimpse of what to wait for in the coming year. The announcement of the year’s theme, “Finding Comfort in Adversity: Flaming Hearts Full of Advocacies,” soon followed.

As one member of the event’s committee explains, the theme is not just about acknowledging people’s stories, but also embracing their beauty.

73 Since then, the online project has already released a lot of content. A Valentine’s Day event was posted, wherein anonymous contributors shared their love stories. These were then rendered and delivered by the art students into artworks, spoken word poetry, and song covers. The platform became a way for contributors who could hardly open up to craftily communicate their messages, whether these be for themselves, their loved ones, or their friends.

On the 23rd and 25th of February, the heads and members of the visual, performing, and literary arts committees were introduced as a form of exposure and credit for the on-going posts. The introductory post bore the design of a deck of cards—the aces and jacks—as a sign of the team’s ability to be holistic, jack-of-all trades creatives with passion for their respective fields.

For the first two months following its re-launch, many people have come to show their support for the page. This was evident as the Facebook page of the event garnered its initial target of hitting a thousand likes. These were made possible by students’ friends, family, teachers, and all the people who have been very supportive and appreciative of the team’s efforts.

Currently, the Malik-Laya team is gathering scriptwriting submissions from the public, regardless if the interested contributor is a student of St. Paul University Manila or not. The team is looking for stories that tackle unpopular opinions, underrated themes, and topics made taboo by society’s standards and are not commonly seen in mainstream films. The submitted stories will have a chance to be turned into a short film.

For March, people can expect the release of more articles and novelettes that are in line with the event’s theme. The plan is to raise awareness about underheard stories and themes and to put the underrated into the spotlight. It is also a form of interaction with the audience, as they can interpret and engage with the fictional works.

By April, expect the release of more heartfelt performances and creative works. AADT Batch 2020-2021 has a lot more in store for the whole community to enjoy, and they promise not to disappoint.

Spectral: A Showcase of Artistry

The Arts and Design Track (AADT) students of St. Paul University Manila Senior High School have continuously been putting out various works of art—visual, literary, or performance, through their Malik-Laya Facebook page.

But one major event culminated their online platform content –-Spectral: Nightlife in a Quarantine Night, a virtual talent showcase held on May 1, 2021.

To people who may not be aware, Malik-Laya is an annual event organized by the AADT students, as a way to highlight the talents and creativity of the various young artists in the class. Last Saturday’s Spectral was one of the main shows that this year’s Malik-Laya production had in store.

The virtual event started with a brief introduction of the hosts, CJ Matias and Janna Carbonel, followed by a short video about the first group of dancers, Madonna Choros. The word “Madonna” was inspired by the iconic, globally renowned performer, Madonna, who, whenever you hear the name, automatically reminds you of powerful and inspiring stage acts. “Choros” meanwhile is the Greek word for dance. The members of the group, namely Ruemie Amar, Mikaella Delmoro, and Reine Larga, electrified the audience with the dance rendition of the song “Boss” by Fifth Harmony.

With sweet vocals, talented playing of instruments, and powerful dancing, Spectral was everything you could ask for, and more. Fun interviews hosted by students accentuated the night, while eye-grabbing performances sustained the viewer’s attention. The event is a collaboration of AADT students to produce a show despite the restrictions of the pandemic. The lack of face-to-face contact did not stop these students from coming up with a spectacular program.

The next performer, Endless, followed up the energetic opening with a soulful cover of one of the most emotional and heartfelt songs of Coldplay, “Fix You.” Endless was their chosen band name because of their never-ending passion for playing and making music. The band members are Afel Mariano as their pianist, Adrian Prins as their sound producer and drum pads, Jericho Ricasa as their electric guitarist, and Aaron Rebustes as their vocalist.

The next band, Anomaly, raised the bar higher by performing an original song written by the host, CJ Matias. Their band name was derived from their different musical styles. The band members were CJ Matias as the guitarist and songwriter, Jana Farinas as their bassist, Antonio Tan as their guitarist, and Jean Navarro as their vocalist, who rendered the song, “Shadows.”

Last but definitely not the least was another dance group named The Prism Paradigms. The word “prism” was used to describe their wide range of style and art, while “paradigms” is a term that describes a model or an example. The group’s powerhouse performers were Tep Rodriguez, Julianne Esguerra, and Kayle Orcena, who danced to the song, “Power” by Little Mix.

While the artists gave their best with their individual performances, what made the event more colorful and memorable for the crowd was the overall editing of the video production led

by Malik-Laya’s technical team.

After the performances, the host invited the leaders of the two dance groups and a member of Endless to be interviewed. The talk show-style interview circled around the performers’ experiences, including the overall feeling of seeing their final output, and ended with the iconic game Fast Talk.

The event is testament that artists are unbounded by the pandemic.

Despite the physical distance of the performers, dancers, bandmates, and teams from one another, the class was able to present an excellent and enjoyable virtual program, that is sure to linger in the hearts of their fellow students and artists.

There will always be something new that will address people’s health needs. For St. Paul University Manila’s College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (CNAHS) students, a modernized and upgraded lab will hopefully welcome them soon. In the works is the new Nursing Laboratory, construction of which began in 2019. This aims to be a modern mini hospital setting, which will give the student nurses a taste of their future.

Dr. Jennifer Olivar, Dean of CNAHS, claims that this laboratory is “very different” from the old one. Its purpose is to train student nurses as if they were in the real world, as the laboratory equipment will simulate an existing hospital. Future Paulinian nurses will not be in any movie sets, but they will definitely be in action!

3. Hands-on, Brains-on in the Simulation Rooms When we return to face-to-face classes, demonstrations will not be the same once students set foot in this laboratory. It will contain the most critical rooms in a hospital: Emergency Room, Operating Room, Delivery Room, Intensive Care Unit, and Recovery Room. Moreover, it will also have ten individual rooms set as demo cubicles and two new demonstration classrooms.

These rooms can simulate real-life situations and patient cases to make learning experience truly authentic. This will definitely get students at the edge of their seats. So, get your checklist ready because this laboratory is something you might want to consider when picking out a school for nursing.

4. Enjoy Spruced Up Classrooms The classrooms will not be ordinary classrooms.

These demonstration rooms can provide the quality of education the students aspire for as theyAwill be in the best learning environment.

This type of learning space will be a good area for students to work on their specific goals.

Combining this setup with the organized, outgoing, confident, and compassionate CNAHS professors will definitely allow students to learn more.
