2012-­2013 Research Awards :H DUH SURXG WR DQQRXQFH RXU QHZHVW UHVHDUFK SDUWQHUV DOO working to make life better for those with chronic illness! 1. Just For Parents: Implementation, Intervention, Testing and Evaluation. This project, lead by Dr. Korey Hood in collaboration with Dr. Bill Polonsky of the Behavioral Diabetes Institute, tests the Just For Parents Assessment Tool and will create an intervention program for families living with diabetes. This project builds off previous BSH research. 2. Participatory Medicine using Social Media. Lead by Dr. Sally Coovert in USF Child Health, this project intersects psychology, clinical care and engineering to provide a modern approach to many delicate issues involving family functioning in life with chronic disease. 3. Starting a New Dialogue in Diabetes Education. This project, lead by Dr. Barbara Anderson and Dr. Kimon Angelides, looks at reframing diabetes education in an eLearning, patient engagement platform. This system will be built in partnership with the new USF Healthy Living Center. 4. SELECT: A New Approach to Medical School Curriculum with a Focus on Leadership, Community Learning and Engagement. This project, lead by Dr. Alicia Monroe and Dr. Kathy Bradley-­ Klug, has been nationally recognized for its innovative nature. The SELECT program strives to bring leadership, creativity and emotional intelligence to the education and development of WRPRUURZ¡V KHDOWK SURIHVVLRQDOV 5. Development of the Youth Health Resiliency Scale. Lead by Dr. Kathy Bradley-­Klug, this project is working to develop an assessment scale to help professionals and caregivers better understand the current knowledge and resiliency factors for youth with chronic illness.

Students with Diabetes Internship ProgramÂĽ Announcing the Students with 'LDEHWHV ,QWHUQVKLS 3URJUDPÂŒ a competitive program designed to develop and train undergraduate and graduate students living with type 1 diabetes to become leaders in the diabetes community. The goal of the Students with Diabetes Internship ProgramĚť ‹• to  introduce young adults living with T1D to the various professional opportunities within the diabetes industry and community while equipping them with the necessary skills and experience to create, train and inspire the next generation of leaders in diabetes. Those selected will attend the SWD Leadership Training Academy May 30-­31, 2013 to prepare for their summer internship experience. Students with Diabetes Chapter Growth The Students with Diabetes organization continues to grow and expand. This fall we welcomed several new chapters and regions to our organization:

Students with Diabetes Research Students with Diabetes is actively engaged in collecting data to prove efficacy of the program and to track diabetes outcomes for the participants. Presently, research is being conducted at the University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, University of Florida and Butler University! Last year research found: x 81% of SWD participants reported feeling more confident about their diabetes. x 88% of SWD participants felt SWD helped them feel more positive about their future. x 62% of SWD participants reported having >1 distressing diabetes related social interaction in the last month. x There was an overall improvement in AbA1c over the academic year indicating increased motivation to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Exciting New Clinical Facility USF Health, EOS Health and Bringing Science Home are excited to announce a new diabetes and metabolic disease clinical center in South Tampa. The USF Healthy Living Center has an innovative approach and will be a sort of one-­stop shop for teen/adult diabetes care and weight management. Stay tuned for more details as the building continues and we near a grand opening in early 2013.

Spouse / Partner Research Our investigation into the family that surrounds diabetes continues. The unique partnership with Dr. Bill Polonsky at the Behavioral Diabetes Institute and Bringing Science Home is yielding interesting findings on what most concerns partners of people with diabetes. We still need your help with our research though. If you want to be involved in the interviews, contact us! Be on the lookout for a website similar to what we built with our parent research to help partners best address challenges and concerns about life with their loved ones diabetes.

Parent Site Receives Lots of Traffic!

,I \RX KDYHQ·W YLVLWHG http://justforparents.behavioraldiabetes.org, you should! This innovative tool is helping families living with diabetes all over the world. Created by BSH and the Behavioral Diabetes Institute, the site walks parents through a self-­ assessment that helps identify major areas of family stress related to diabetes. Then, viewers receive feedback and ideas of things to try to make life better for themselves and the child they love with diabetes. It is worth a look.

Asthma Study Results Nearly 69% of the 220 participants noted, ´Being unsupported by family is worse than being XQVXSSRUWHG E\ IULHQGV µ 7KLV OHDGV %6+ WR FRQVLGHU ZKDW GRHV LGHDO IDPLO\ VXSSRUW ORRN DQG feel like for young adults with asthma and other chronic conditions? In this study, there was a correlation between feelings of family support and self-­ consciousness. The majority of respondents reported they were confident in managing their asthma, but many also reported they were self-­conscious. This tells us that work is needed to improve self-­confidence in young adults with chronic health conditions.

Focus Group Participants Needed ² Youth 13-­21! Health Study

We are looking for youth 13-­21 to participate in focus groups about youth health literacy and feelings of resilience. You must be in the Tampa area and live with a chronic health condition for the last 6 months. If you are interested, email Dr. Kathy Bradley! kbradley@usf.edu
