December 31, 2010 To The Park Theatre Family, THIS IS the fifth year we have reported to you about the effort to reopen The Park Theatre. In 2006, we told you that “The Board of Trustees had laid the structural foundations for the Park Theatre Corporation” and that “it was the kind of work that didn’t show but was absolutely essential to future successes.” The next year we reported that the Theatre had “mounted its first-ever Theatre Season.” In 2008, we said that “we were proud of what we and dedicated individuals and organizations throughout the Region had accomplished” because when the Theatre closed down in 1976 it was all but forgotten, and we were standing “at the threshold of a capital campaign.” Last year, with the award of half a million dollars in tax credits, we correctly observed that it had been “a milestone year for The Park Theatre.” And so, it continues to be.

After all the work of all the years, the goal to open the Theatre and begin operations has been set at $2.9m. That target includes construction costs ($2.5m), and an endowment and operating funds ($400,000) through the end of the Capital Campaign. To date, the project has raised $957,883. Half that amount is for the restoration; the other half is funds that have and will continue to support operations until we reach our goal.

We have achieved this success at a time of grave economic challenges because of the work of so many dedicated volunteers. The Theatre has no paid staff. We have honored your trust by spending your contributions carefully and thoughtfully. This year, we have been especially encouraged by the reasons as well as the responses from our donors and supporters. We thought you would like to know why this project succeeds in the words of those who have given to it.

H I G H L I G HTS Economic Impact Study Rolled Out to a Full House

It was standing room only in The Park Theatre in January when the Washington, D.C.-based consultancy Americans for the Arts (AFTA) presented the results of the Economic Impact Study of Arts and Culture in the Monadnock Region. Cathy Furze, Jaffrey Chamber President, and Franklin Sterling, Selectman and State Representative, along with Park Theatre trustees welcomed guests from around the region.

Conducted over an eight-month period in 2009 and commissioned by Arts Alive!, the AFTA Study collected data from 1,639 patron surveys of 24 arts and culture organizations

around the Region, including The Park Theatre. The Study measured the amount of money people spent when attending an artistic or entertainment event.

The cost of admission was not taken into account. Of interest was how much money patrons spent eating out, for babysitters or souvenirs related to attending an event. The Study demonstrated that the average patron spends $18.46 when attending events and that arts and culture bring $3.5m into the Monadnock Region every year and support 477 jobs.

Rock the Park Benefit for the Theatre

Two highly sought-after local bands with regional appeal—Sheepdip and Northern Stone—mounted a rock concert at Woodbound Inn in April to benefit the restoration of The Park Theatre. Sheepdip’s lead guitarist and event organizer, Dana Winchester, said his fellow band members “wanted to play an event that would provide a service to the community.” Sheepdip (http:// sheepdip.us), formally established in 2002 by longtime friends and neighbors, has gained loyal fans throughout the region, with an emphasis on classic rock and roll standards. The six-piece band also plays a mix of contemporary rock and dance tunes.

Northern Stone (www. northernstone.net) developed a sound they like to call “Northern Rock,” original music blending the eclectic tastes of its four members with the best of pop, grunge and rock. More than 140 attended the event that included a performance by Project Shakespeare, a silent auction, lots of music and dancing.

The Theatre Brings the Kentucky Derby to Town More than 100 friends and supporters came to Woodbound Inn on the First Saturday in May for the annual running of the Kentucky Derby, complete with big screen, winners’ prizes and raffles, thanks to the work and creativity of the Kentucky Derby Committee: Judith Collier, Sue Emerson, Joyce Gregg, Miki Osgood, Cathie Runyon and many others. Winners of the Ladies Best Hat Competition were Ann Clarkeson for her “ecofriendly bird creation,” Peachie Chalk for the “boldest statement,” Linda Harris for the “most outrageously exciting chapeau,” and Ginny Ridabock for the “best floral presentation.” Peyton Seaver won Judges’ Choice for her “Frog Hat.” Dennis Wright, Sally Adams and Ron Rogstad won Win, Place and Show and a good time was had by all.

Mural Artists Celebrate Completion of Fifth Mountain Mural Area artists gathered in September for a Champagne Reception to celebrate the completion of the Theatre’s Fifth Mountain Mural project. Conceived by Deb Pero, the 8-by-16 foot mural-mosaic consists of 288 eight-inch square panels painted as one large landscape of Mount Monadnock.

The artists, working independently and without knowing the original painting, donated their time and

talent to the project. Individuals, businesses, churches and civic groups have become part of this project by sponsoring individual panels and supporting the development of the Theatre at the same time. The mural was temporarily installed at the Theatre for the artists who participated in the project to see for the first time their completed masterpieces as a part of the whole original landscape. In 2011 the Fifth Mountain Mural will be installed at the new Sarah Hogate Bacon Emergency Department of Monadnock Community Hospital until its final installation in the restored lobby of the reopened Park Theatre.

Huber, a graduate film student at Fitchburg State University, is donating his talent to the project and plans to film each stage of the transformation through to the reopening of the Theatre in a few years. Granddaughters, Brenda Vanni Case, now of Maine, and Lyn Vanni Lambert, a life-long Jaffrey resident, shared their memories of life with a movie-theatre owning grandfather. Others interviewed were Roland Duval, Michael B. King, Franklin Sterling, Jr., and Ray Record who recalled the Theatre as a gathering place for the whole community.

Project Shakespeare performed selected scenes from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, directed by Deborah Thurber; and Volunteer Leader Tuesday Wright presented Certificates of Appreciation to The Park Theatre’s Usher Club members Rebecca, Jennifer and David Migotsky, and Ed and Mary Merrell. Holiday music was performed by Bernie Watson and Louise Curran.

The primary thrust of 2010 was to take the first steps of the Capital Campaign. It was a threefold effort mounting the Board of Trustees campaign, the CDFA tax credit campaign and planning the Leadership Campaign. Our heartfelt thanks go to LEADERSHIP STEERING COMMITTEE Honorary Co-chairs Governor Walter Peterson and David Tower, who serve along with members Cynthia Healer, Claire Bean, James O’Neill and Jinnie Russell. We also wish to thank former trustees Jeff Crocker and Charlie Palmer who joined current trustees to conduct the board campaign, and Donald Upton, chair, and members Joseph Durell, Jack Belletete and Tom Doane who have ably run the CDFA tax credit campaign.

The Theatre was equally fortunate in two successful benefits this past year that raised funds and built support for the project.

Our heartfelt thanks go to KENTUCKY DERBY COMMITTEE members Judith Collier, Susan Emerson, Joyce Gregg, Miki Osgood and Cathie Runyon who, along with Marney Bean, brought the Derby to the Monadnock Region.

THE BUSINESS DONORS TO THE PARK THEATRE N October 2009, the Board of Directors of the Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA) in Concord approved The Park Theatre for a $500,000 award in New Hampshire State Tax Credits. This award followed a rigorous qualifying process and provides the Theatre with 20% of the construction project needs. The Park Theatre was one of only 19 projects statewide to be approved for the tax credits. This program allows businesses to meet their state tax obligations and support approved and viable projects with the same tax dollars. CDFA, created by legislation in 1983, is a nonprofit public instrumentality of the State of New Hampshire and administers $33 million in funding resources, which include a combination of state tax credits and federal Community Development Block Grants.

About the Businesses Twenty-two businesses throughout the Monadnock Region have donated $407,450 to The Park Theatre through the CDFA Tax Credit Program. These companies are located in Jaffrey (13), Peterborough (3), Swanzey (1), Keene (2) and Concord (1). Ten of them are familyowned and operated. Three of them have been in business for more than one hundred years (Belletetes, Lake Sunapee Bank and People’s United Bank). Together, these businesses employ 1,914 people throughout the Region. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE PARK THEATRE HE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN to restore and reopen The Park Theatre began when more than 800 individuals, businesses and foundations from 11 towns in the region and 13 states across the country donated funds to purchase The Park Theatre building from Roy and Nancy Stone the day after Valentine’s Day in 2006. The Stones themselves contributed to this effort with a reduction in the purchase price. The very first donation for restoration of the building was made within two months by the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce with proceeds from four annual auctions set aside for expressly this purpose.

The Campaign of the Trustees of The Park Theatre was undertaken in 2010 and was the culmination of 3½ years of investigation and analysis to determine that the restoration and the reopening of the Theatre was a viable effort with sufficient support. This necessary discovery over 3½ years was supported by foundations, individuals, businesses and government in the Monadnock Region. Their contributions and proceeds from Theatre programs made it possible to engage professional experts who evaluated the project and the property.

The due diligence undertaken and successfully completed to confirm the viability of the restoration of The Park Theatre included:

That work was organized and overseen by members of the Board of Trustees, each of whom brought their individual expertise to the various phases of project assessment. Added to those successful preparations were the endorsements of Town of Jaffrey, the Southwest Regional Planning Commission, and New Hampshire’s Community Development Finance Authority. At the close of 2009, the Board of Trustees concluded that the restoration of the Theatre, although ambitious, could be done. The goal to open the Theatre and begin operations has been set at $2.9m. That target includes construction costs ($2.5m), and an endowment and operating funds ($400,000) through the end of the Capital Campaign.

The Capital Campaign to restore and reopen the Theatre took a significant next step in 2010 with the Capital Campaign of the Trustees of The Park Theatre. The goal of this phase of the campaign was to achieve $100,000 in gifts and pledges with 100% participation by all 26 members of the Board of Trustees, past and present, since the start of the project.

The committee was composed of Jeffrey Crocker, Tom Doane, Caroline Hollister, Mike King, Charlie Palmer and Dennis Wright. Campaign Counsel to the committee was Susan Palmer of the Palmer Westport Group.

The Capital Campaign of the Trustees was a complete success. By year’s end the Trustee’s Campaign had secured $102,000 in gifts and pledges, and 100% of all trustees of The Park Theatre, past and present, participated in the Campaign. The project moves forward. The Campaign continues.

Unbeknownst to Theatre trustees, Gilcreast incorporated The Park Theatre into one of those mysteries in her most recently published book The Vanishing Art and the Clueless Shoe. In celebration of the Board Campaign, Gilcreast autographed a copy for each trustee and promises to involve the Theatre in future stories.

WO RK I N G TO G E T H E R THEATRE’S fourth season was the happy result of continued collaboration with performing artists, community, civic and business organizations in the Region. The Theatre participates in Arts Alive! and is a member of the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce, the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits and New Hampshire Citizens for the Arts. Additionally, the Theatre continues to receive generous support from the Region’s editors and journalists at The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, The Keene Sentinel, New Hampshire Union Leader, New Hampshire Magazine, The Monadnock Home Companion, The Monadnock Shopper and the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce newsletters. During 2010 the Rindge Saturday Night Supper Club, the Kiwanis Club of Keene and the Peterborough Rotary Club gave trustees opportunities to tell the Theatre’s story and update their organizations and the community on the board’s progress and plans to date.

The Park Theatre Performing Partners

Lack of suitable performance facilities has hampered the programs and growth of many artistic organizations in the Region. It is a problem that has no other apparent solution other than the reopening of The Park Theatre because the Theatre will provide a professional performance venue and administrative support for area artists and educators.

Since 2007, Theatre trustees have collaborated with performing artists to mount theatrical programs and to promote them in marketing pieces, press releases and the Annual Report. In return, the Theatre’s PERFORMING PARTNERS have spread the word about The Park Theatre to their patrons and colleagues and anticipate their own performances in the restored Theatre.

In 2010 Theatre trustees established the Performing Partners Steering Group to gather information about the needs and expectations of performing artists who will use the Theatre in the future. The Steering Group convened the first Plenary Session of The Park Theatre’s Performing Partners in September to update them on the plans and progress of the Theatre. Attending were representatives of Actors’ Circle Theatre, Monadnock Chorus, Monadnock Music, Peterborough Children’s Choir, Peterborough Chamber Choir, Peterborough Players and Project Shakespeare. Attendees plan to convene a Second Plenary in 2011 to develop rehearsal and performance schedules for a theatrical year and will include representatives from area schools and other artistic organizations. The Steering Committee is chaired by Amy Knight, Monadnock Chorus, and includes, Mariah Sefel, Actors’ Circle Theatre, Christina Meinke, Monadnock Music, and Theatre Board president, Caroline Hollister.

The Park Theatre participates in Arts Alive!, a nonprofit organization based in Keene, working to sustain, promote and expand access to the arts and cultural resources in the Monadnock Region because communities that support the arts and culture not only enhance their quality of life, they also invest in their economic well being. The more than 75 artistic and cultural organizations participating in Arts Alive! represent nearly all of the 44 towns and communities in the Monadnock Region. The Park Theatre’s board president, Caroline Hollister serves as Vice Chair of its Board of Directors. In January the Theatre collaborated with Arts Alive! to host the roll-out of the 2009 Economic Impact Study commissioned

by Arts Alive! and undertaken by the Washington, D.C.-based consultancy, Americans for the Arts.

Twenty-four arts and culture organizations in the Monadnock Region, including The Park Theatre, surveyed their audiences over an eight month season. The surveys were complied by AFTA and presented to community leaders in the Region. The Study demonstrated that the average patron spends $18.46 for meals or refreshments, souvenirs, child care or transportation, when attending an event, in addition to the price of admission. These result showed conclusively that arts and culture bring $3.5m into the Monadnock Region each year, in addition to $13m spent in the communities to operate their organizations. Mr. Telemachus A. Demoulas, founder and owner of the sixty-two Market Basket supermarkets operating in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, established his foundation “in the spirit and desire to assist the many important and worthwhile non-profit organizations that he truly believed were deserving of corporate support.” Trustees of the Demoulas Foundation continue to work diligently under Mr. Demoulas’ guiding philosophy. Already an early supporter of The Park Theatre, the foundation has recently awarded the trustees a grant to support the artistic programs currently being planned for 2011.

The Putnam Foundation awarded the Theatre an operating grant to enable the Theatre to continue operations and programs while the restoration work moves forward. Another grant for general operating support was awarded by the Boston-based Susan A. and Donald P. Babson Charitable Foundation, whose focus is the enrichment and empowerment of people of all ages.

Further support for the Theatre’s programs and operations came from the Public Service of New Hampshire Community Relations Fund and the Royal Bank of Canada Charitable Foundation. As Canada’s largest bank and among the largest banks in the world, RBC focuses its support on a broad range of causes including education and health and wellness.

The Roy A. Hunt Foundation, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and committed

to community development, environmental support and programs to benefit the youth in communities, awarded the Theatre a grant for general support early in the year. At year’s end, a local charitable foundation, whose mission is to support charitable activities in Jaffrey and the Monadnock Region, awarded the Theatre a grant for general support.

The Theatre also received foundation support to develop architectural and engineering plans for the restoration along with funds to purchase theatrical equipment. The Gilbert Verney Foundation awarded the project a grant to advance that work. This fund was established by the family owners of Monadnock Paper Mills. Located in Bennington, New Hampshire, Monadnock Paper Mills is the oldest continuously operating paper mill in the United States, and the foundation has played an important role in the region by supporting philanthropic causes that include environmental protection and education.

NH Business Magazine ranked Monadnock Paper Mills as one of NH’s TOP 100 PRIVATE COMPANIES IN 2010. The Kingsbury Fund, established by the Keene-based Kingsbury Corporation, a world leader in the design and manufacture of premier quality specialpurpose high production metal cutting and machining centers, awarded the Theatre the down payment on a motorized movie screen for the restored and reopened auditorium in the Theatre. The Fund gives priority to local community charities in Cheshire County.

Grants have ranged from $300 to $400,000.

Corporate foundation grants total over $32,000. Private foundation grants exceed $150,000.

Grant awards to the Theatre include $90,000 toward the purchase of the building and $92,000 for operating costs since then. Over $400,000 has been awarded for restoration and equipment, including funds for a motorized movie screen and building construction costs. To date, the grants awarded represent 25% of the budget to restore the Theatre.

Hadsel gave each mural a general cleaning and thorough inspection. David Tuebner, filmmaker and internet consultant, recorded the cleaning process and lent a hand in moving the murals from the auditorium into the old storefront space where the cleaning was done. The final step in the process was to roll each mural over large tubes, cover them with Tyvek and place them in storage. Once the Theatre restoration is complete, the conservators form Curtains Without Borders will return to give the murals a detailed cleaning and in-painting as well as provide assistance with the re-hanging.

The first step in the restoration of the Theatre was thus taken, and successfully so, because of the many individuals and businesses in our community who came together to get the job done. Tables for the conservators’ work and the commercial trailer to transport the murals to storage were provided by Belletete’s. Carolyn Edwards, Sunflowers Café & Catering, loaned portable heaters and hot coffee for the two days of on-site conservation. Storage for the four historic murals at Jaffrey Self Storage was generously donated by Cyndy and Don Burgess.

The expertise and effort to preserve the murals was made possible by grants from the Putnam Foundation and the Royal Bank of Canada Charitable Foundation.

The Park Theatre was built in 1922 and, although it has been dark for the past 34 years, it is part of the Monadnock Region’s cultural history and the home of genuine decoration from the 1920s Art Deco period of American architecture. The Theatre is also a contributing building to the DOWNTOWN JAFFREY HISTORIC DISTRICT designation by the Department of the Interior’s NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. Mounted on the walls inside the Theatre are four 9-by-17 foot tempera murals depicting Mount Monadnock as viewed from the towns around the mountain during the four seasons. These historic murals were painted

by New Hampshire muralist Carl Eric Nelson in 1941.

A Mural for the 21st Century

As a part of the reopening of the Theatre, Trustees have designed a fifth mural—“The Fifth Mountain Mural”—to celebrate the future of the Theatre in the 21st century and to honor the heritage of the existing four murals. This new mural, on the same grand scale as the original murals, has been created by artists and students from the towns around the mountain and depicts life in the Monadnock Region. When completed, the mural will be prominently displayed in the Theatre as a part of its permanent collection.

This new mural of Mount Monadnock is a mural-mosaic composed of 288 individual 8-inch square panels that fit together like pieces of a puzzle to reveal the larger landscape. The Fifth Mountain Mural artist who painted the overall landscape, numerous panels and served as project chair is Deborah Pero. In 2010 Deb was selected by the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce to be the 2010 Monadnock Arts Auction artist with her painting, “Four Apples.” The project is now chaired by Edward Merrell himself a mural artist of more than a dozen panels. When completed, the mural will be temporarily installed in the new Sarah Hogate Bacon Emergency Department entrance of Monadnock Community Hospital.

When the Theatre is reopened, the mural, along with the names of all the sponsors, artists and those memorialized, will be installed as part of a permanent display in The Park Theatre.

Each panel is a work of art on its own and depicts aspects of life in the Monadnock Region. Students from area schools and artists, both professional and amateur, from throughout the region donated their talent to the project. Individuals, businesses, churches and civic groups became part of this project by sponsoring individual panels and supporting the development of The Park Theatre at the same time.

Many of those panels have been sponsored in memory of or in honor of individuals in the Region. By year’s end, two-thirds of the panels were sponsored.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES is grateful for all the support the community continues to give the restoration and reopening of The Park Theatre. Everyone working to reopen the Theatre is a volunteer. There is no paid staff. The board engages the services of experts as they are needed. The success of the project is due to the many hundreds of friends, new and old, from all the towns around the Region who give their time to help out where help is needed in ways too numerous to list. We are especially grateful to everyone who has served on committees that do the work that moves the project forward and for the hospitality shown the board and all its committees by the businesses and organizations in downtown Jaffrey who have given the Theatre places to meet and work: Martha and John Sepe at Mindful Books and Ephemera; the Jaffrey Chamber of Commerce and Becky Newton; Joanne McGovern and Stephanie Faulkner at People’s United Bank; and Nora Bryant and the gracious members of the Jaffrey Woman’s Club for the perfect place for movies, receptions and the Annual Meeting.

We are encouraged and pleased that so many wish to help out, so in 2010, under the leadership of Tuesday Wright and in response to our many volunteers, the trustees created THE PARK THEATRE USHER CLUB. The Usher Club has become the official corps of volunteers who help present movies and other programs, now and in the future. Usher Club members receive recognition, special premiums and free admission to Theatre events, when they help out at those events as well as at other programs where Usher Club volunteers can bring a friend and be a member of the audience.

Usher Club members were recognized by the Board of Trustees at the 2010 Annual Meeting for their “outstanding service as a volunteer during the 2010 theatrical season.”

Each year more than 200 people donate their time and talent to advance the Theatre. Those volunteers give more than 35,000 hours of their time each year to help out. That adds up to more than 130,000 hours that have been given to the Theatre since 2006. Is it any wonder that so much has been accomplished?
