“To me historically the chapel is one of the things which has held Brantford, Brant County and the Six Nations together,” said Mohawk Chief Councillor Wellington Staats, at the time.

The queen unveiled a plaque at Mohawk Chapel, recognizing it as a National Historic site.

The Queen’s visit to Brant County included a visit to the Mohawk Chapel in 1984, the year of the bicentennial of Ontario and the 99th anniversary of the Royal Chapel of the Mohawks, which was built in 1885 by Joseph Brant and his warriors after members of the Six Nations Confederacy left New York State. The small frame building was the first protestant church built in Ontario. It is the only Royal Indigenous Chapel in the world.

It might be too soon to use the ‘Christmas’ word. Believe it or not, there are individuals out there already compiling Christmas lists and some have even started their shopping! If you’re looking for a unique, practical and downright delicious gift, let us introduce to you The Raw Carrot Enterprise. The local organization operates in five community churches across Southwestern Ontario, providing individuals on Ontario Disability with employment and social opportunities. At Paris Presbyterian Church, where it all started eight years ago, a staff of 12 work diligently to prepare and package some delicious soup that perhaps you’ve seen on local grocery store and farmer’s market shelves. This season they are bringing back a popular favourite from 2021 The Christmas Gift Box. Dubbed ‘the gift that keeps giving’, these boxes include two homemade (with love) soups and hand picked local charcuterie products: Bright cheddar cheese, Finest Gypsy

In October 1961, the Paris Mounties became the town’s first Ontario Hockey Association entry in five years (since the Intermediate "B" Paris '29ers) having been placed in a six team Junior C group. The other teams were Preston, Elmira, Dundas, Simcoe, and Hespeler. An outdoor physical training program had been started and the response from boys wishing a tryout with the team was encouraging for the club’s officials. They had outdoor training sessions at Lions Park in Paris. On October 26th , 1961, thirty four candidates turned out when the Paris Mounties held their first ice workout at the Preston Arena. From now on they will practice in the Paris Arena starting October 27th at 7:30. The Mounties played their first home game Tuesday, November 13th , 1961, against Elmira.

The hard played series went to game seven at the Syl Apps Arena in Paris, when the Mounties finally took the win earning a spot in the All Ontario Final. The 1967/68 Paris Mounties semifinal games against Dundas were a hard fought, rivalry-ridden series. Coach Wally Kalichuk’s plan to have Paul Sales shadow Dundas' leading scorer worked well and in the final, deciding game, Dundas fell apart taking unnecessary penalties. Of course, it did not help that Dundas had to listen to 2,000 cheering Mounties fans at the Syl AppsArena.

The finals against Woodstock were just as tough, but the Mounties prevailed taking the deciding game to win the InterCounty 1967-68 JR C League. The team went on to play New Hamburg for the All-Ontario title, but sadly came up short.

“We’re excited about the team, they’re young and they’re fast,” said General Manager and team owner Todd Wood. He said the Mounties bench staff and scouts can sign up to 25 players, but they are keeping details about the roster under wraps until the season is officially underway. He confirmed there are approximately five signed players from the County of Brant.

The Paris Mounties is returning to action after a two year hiatus. Covid shut the team down for one year and last year they didn’t take part in the PJHL as they were exploring the possibility of climbing into more competitive Senior AA hockey. That didn’t materialize and it was announced earlier this year that they would return to the Doherty Division.

Ken Brown was hired as Head Coach. Brown is well known in Cambridge hockey circle. He’s coached minor hockey for years and is the owner of Revolution Hockey, a professionally operated full service hockey company that focusses on training young players to their full potential. Brown was a six year scout for the Mounties and after some discussion this spring he agreed to fill the head coach role.

“We don’t have to sell the program, the program sells itself,” said Woods, explaining how the scouting process has been so far. “We have a coach with high qualifications which is going to propel these players to higher levels. We look after our players and the community is ready to support them.”

Junior C hockey returns to Paris this month, catch your local team in action during exhibition play on Monday

Junior hockey is returning to Paris this month with a brand new roster, lots of speed and a ton of enthusiasm. They will compete in the highly competitive Doherty Division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL). The Paris Mounties started their exhibition season this past week and fans can catch a glimpse of this young team in action on Monday night on home ice at the Brant Sports Complex at 8:00 pm.

“Tyler Pelton, Brad Jones, Ken Brown and I have been working hard scouting players and getting players here to play in Paris,” said Wood Pelton and Jones oversee Hockey Operations for the organization Pelton is a former Mounties player, part of the 1995 96 team who brought home the Schmalz Cup provincial championship title He was a longstanding member of the Brantford Blast and the organization retired his No 5 jersey at the Brantford Civic Centre upon his retirement

Thomas Kitchen, Tyler Hill-Griffeon with 2 and William Matekovic scored Paris’ goals. The Mounties continue exhibition play this Monday with a home game at the Brant Sports Complex at 8: 20 pm, against Dundas again.

Anyone interested in volunteering or getting involved with The Paris Mounties is encouraged to reach out to Todd by email to twood@parismounties.com

“I was impressed with the compete level from the team as a whole. It was the first junior hockey game for most of the lineup and there were definitely some nerves in the first period. I felt we settled down a little in the second and third and started to show some signs of the team we are going to be,” Todd commented.

by Michelle Malvaso

There’s a special discounted admission fee of $5 for this exhibition game.

The Mounties got their first taste of action on Thursday with an exhibition game in Dundas. Despite a 7-4 loss, Wood is happy with the start.

The challenge this year, said Wood, has been building a team from scratch. They didn’t have a core group of players to work with, to trade and acquire, so it’s been a challenge getting the right talent on the bench. With the roster being finalized next week, the next up hill battle will be getting the boys to play as a team. “We’re going to have to play as a team. We will be facing competition that has been together for years. Teamwork will be our number one focus.”

Woods purchased the Paris Mounties 12 years ago after initially coming on board as a team sponsor. Woods has played hockey his whole life and played Junior D hockey with the Burford Bulldogs before playing competitive hockey at Lambton College in Sarnia. He took the Mounties from the basement to the very top of the standings, winning the league title in 2013/2014. They went on that year to lose to Grimsby in the quarter finals.

Woods hopes the community will rally around the team as they find their footing in the Doherty Division this season. Discussing the importance of fan-support, Woods commented, “They are everything. If a team doesn’t have fan support, they are not going to survive. It’s imperative that the local community gets behind the team and comes out to watch them. It’s great entertainment.”

What we do need is a vision for the future, and someone to pursue that vision with a passionate, energetic fervor.

The catalyst to run happened in February, when developers were demolishing the lands near Barker’s Bush Walking past the 12 foot tall, 100 foot long pile of trees trees that were older than any living person in Paris was sobering and frustrating

To me, Paris and Brant County have always been defined by their relationship to nature; our two rivers and our forests. The coming years are going to be critical for Paris and the County, with the provincial government designating us as a place to grow. Without proper planning that respects our architectural and natural heritage, everywhere from Apps Mills to Pinehurst is at risk of suburban sprawl.

I would build upon the ERides program to allow people with limited access to have reliable transportation with professional drivers.

I’ve lived in Paris my whole life (56 years) and raised my family here at the corner of Silver & Gold in Paris. At age 12, my first summer job was with the Town of Paris as LIT at the Paris Pool, helping kids learn to swim and helping to clean the facility.

As a teenager, I spent 6 years working in the local grocery store, and during the later part of high school and college, I worked as a photographer for the local newspaper The one thing these jobs had in common is that they gave me the opportunity to get to know the people in our community. I want to discuss silencing those train whistles. And let’s protect farmland where possible! There is so much diversity that draws people to this area. We need effective communication at the municipal table to move important work efforts along.

The ups and downs of the stock market are all part of the process for this type of investor. Investors with an aggressive investment risk tolerance prefer asset classes with the potential for high growth, such as equities.

What is risk tolerance? How can you assess yours?

The three types of risk

Knowing your investment risk tolerance level is essential for successful investing. Here’s why risk tolerance is so important and how to figure out how much risk is right for you

Most investors know that risk and return go together. Generally, lower returns mean lower risk and vice versa When it comes to acceptable levels of investment risk tolerance, however, everyone’s different. So, what is risk tolerance, exactly? Generally, it’s how much risk you’re willing to take to reach your investment goals This typically

They will take on some risk but will temper it with the amount of loss they are willing to accept. Moderate risk investors will typically hold some high risk assets, such as equities, as well as safer investments like bonds. They will usually earn more in rising markets than conservative investors but lose less than aggressive investors when the market falls.

depends on several factors, so it’s important to establish your own risk tolerance before you even start investing.

Conservative investors’ key concern is keeping hold of their capital. It’s more important to them to avoid losing money than making it. For this reason, they usually invest in assets that typically ensure a return of principal, such as GICs and bonds. Moderate Investors with a moderate investment risk tolerance strike a balance between growing their money and protecting it.

investments, the greater the risks you can take. If your financial plan means you need a certain sum of money in 30 years’ time, you can take greater risks (and aim to grow your money faster) than if you needed that money in two years’ time The market has always grown over the long term, but it can take it a year or more to fully recover from some dips

investment risk tolerance, you need to identify ways to maximize the potential for higher returns in your investment portfolio, while also managing risk.

Below is our risk tolerance questionnaire: by answering these four questions, you’ll be able to better gauge your personal risk tolerance level.

Markets fluctuate, but studies have proved that investing over time delivers much higher returns than dipping in and out of the market. Spread out the risk by diversifying your portfolio and using asset allocation so your portfolio contains a mix of investments that best suits your goals and risk tolerance

Do you understand the market?

It can be harder to evaluate how much of decline in investments you can stomach when you think about potential losses in percentage terms. Dollar terms can make it more concrete: instead of a 30% drop, tell yourself that it’s a $30,000 drop. How would that make you feel?

This can lead to higher returns when the market is doing well but the downside is that they will experience greater losses when markets dip. Market crashes don’t affect their investment goals, however: they are used to these fluctuations and know that it pays to stay the course They also see market dips as an opportunity to buy equities at a discount

What are your investing goals?

One thing to consider is your market knowledge. If alpha and beta are all Greek to you, it’s probably wise to wade in slowly. If your nest egg is small, the payoff for taking on risk would not be that significant, so it makes sense to take it slowly until you grow your confidence and understanding.

Everyone has different financial goals, and this should have a bearing on how much risk you need to take on If you want to reach $1 million in investments by the time you retire in 30 years, then you can and probably should take on greater risk than someone who needs to save $10,000 in two years

To figure out where you are on the risk reward investment scale, you need to go through an investment risk assessment, so you know your personal investment risk tolerance level Risk is very subjective: for some investors, losing a few thousand dollars is small change, while for others, dropping even a couple of hundred dollars is a big deal.

A good financial plan will determine how much you’ll need to invest, over a set time period, with a risk tolerance level that will help you to reach that goal.
