UDisc is an American based app that allows players to discover courses near them, keep score with friends, track statistics and find and follow local disc golf events. UDisc statistics show that August 2020 was the company’s business month ever, worldwide, with more than 1.6 million rounds recorded. The app is offered at the Paris course. Statistics provided by UDisc show Paris golfers played 7,718 rounds in 2020, which is almost double the number of rounds played at its neighbouring course at Mohawk Park in Brantford, totalling only 3,892. According to the company’s website, when outdoor activities were deemed safe during the pandemic, participation in disc golf rebounded quickly. Success in Paris continued well into 2021. Locally the app tracked 10,049 rounds this year to date, with 1,397 games played in September alone. The disc golf season in Paris runs from early-April to Mid-October, weather dependent. Any new 2022 league information will be posted to the group’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/912190252280456 /

FOCUS ON CHARITY

The Raw Carrot Soup Enterprise

Photo and information provided by therawcarrot.com

From Social Enterprise to Social Franchise

The Raw Carrot started in 2014 as an initiative of Paris Presbyterian Church to support individuals in the congregation who were struggling to meet their basic needs. Although they were accessing the church for financial and social support, they were frustrated by their reliance on others and yet were unable to find a job to change their circumstances. Cooking soup in the church kitchen and selling it locally to provide a few jobs seemed like a great way to address this need.

In 2016, we realized the long road that we had traveled to create a successful kitchen in Paris. With an almostfinancially viable business, permanent jobs being provided, amazing impact stories from our staff members and a number of people asking when a Raw Carrot would open up their community, we were completely convinced that this was the right path. We believe that God has given us a vision to pursue this work and help others achieve the same by passing on the skills and knowledge that we learned the hard way.

In 2017, our first social franchise opened in Mt. Forest United Church with 5 more staff on ODSP, which has paved the way for replication and given us the impetus for the various partnerships that we are currently working with. Mennonite Central Committee Ontario was our 3rd partner in 2018, employing 6 folks currently and Innerkip Presbyterian Church is launched a 4th location in the fall of 2019. Two potential Raw Carrot locations are working towards starting a site and breaking down barriers to employment for people with dis(Abilities) in 2021.

Since 2014, The Raw Carrot has created permanent part-time employment for 27 individuals on the Ontario Disability Support Program and increased their monthly income by 15% -25% on top of their disability stipend. Almost $200,000 of healthy gourmet soup has been sold in the local community. Staff report an increase in dignity, purpose and social connections as a result of participation in meaningful work.

BUSINESS OWNER FINDS BEAUTY IN AN IMPERFECT SITUATION

By Carolina Saenz

As the Paris Independent’s quest to explore local labour shortages, this week we resume the conversation within our community and speak with small business owner Natalie McMillan.

Specializing in crystals and wellness, McMillan’s business, Wabi Sabi, showcases a curated collection of beautiful and captivating pieces. From crystals to jewelry and home decor, everyone will surely find something to gift and to love.

But how have Covid regulations and labour shortages affected this boutique? McMillan explained that while it has been a challenge to adapt to the changes, it has not negatively or positively affected her space. She has focused on keeping a positive perspective and that has made a huge difference when learning to adapt.

To prevent a labour shortage, Natalie explained the importance of enforcing a positive environment, not only for customers but also for her employees.

Having a positive work-environment is crucial as it motivates people to want to go to work, explains McMillan.

“I really enforce a positive environment. It’s important to keep your vibration high and a positive energy,” she said.

With a team of lovely volunteers and one full-time staff member, Wabi Sabi is not looking to hire, but rather looking for ways to keep busy during the upcoming winter months. She said she plans on becoming more present on social media to continue reaching out to her customers. We know that different businesses such as boutiques and restaurants face different challenges, especially during these unprecedented times. Nonetheless, it is inspiring to see how keeping a positive attitude and work environment can impact a business. Honouring its name, Wabi Sabi surely manages to find beauty in the imperfect.
