By Carolina Saenz If you’re into Canadian traditional folk music, you can’t miss the upcoming 'Ian Bell, Live in Concert' event.

Organized by the Women Inspiring Women - Women’s Institute (WIW) Paris branch, this fundraiser will benefit the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation. Enjoy this wonderful performance on Friday, November 18th at 7:30 pm at the Paris Presbyterian Church, also known as the #ForParisCentre.

One of the WIW event organizers, Jenny Clarke, explains how this event came about and why it is important for our community.

“The event is the idea of the Women Inspiring Women Women’s Institute Branch President, Elaine Tully. The vibrant, diverse branch already supports local initiatives and charities as well as education through modest bursaries, however, this is the first major concert fundraiser event undertaken by the branch and Elaine’s suggestion has been

enthusiastically embraced by members as taking the branch’s efforts to support local initiatives to the next level,” Clarke shares.

The Women Inspiring Women WI was founded in 2015 and has an active membership of all ages.

The branch meets once a month at the Paris Fairgrounds and provides a great opportunity to meet others in the community.

Anyone is welcome to join, and visitors can attend two meetings free before deciding whether or not to join.

“With a varied program each month we promote building community, empowering women and supporting families. And, of course, having fun while doing good!” explains Clarke. “The social support among members is a strong base upon which to build educational opportunities and skill development, as well as supporting local charities,” she adds. In addition to regular monthly meetings, special interest groups such as crafting, dining, and a book club are also available. For more information on the branch contact the

For their first concert fundraiser, the choice to benefit the Brant Community Healthcare System Foundation came easy. Clarke explains that when deciding who this first fundraiser should benefit, it was impossible to ignore the invaluable role healthcare workers play in our everyday lives. And with the healthcare system feeling the strain of the pandemic, the money raised will be used where the foundation feels it is most needed, for new equipment and for enhancing patient care.

“The Foundation is committed to raising critical funds to support the top priority needs for our local hospitals, The Brantford General Hospital and The Willett hospital, to support the purchase of medical equipment that is not paid for by the Ministry of Health, to provide essential resources to maintain exceptional patient care and to invest in new and innovative technology,” said Clarke.

COMMUNITY NEWS It goes without mention that this event itself would not be possible without the involvement of Ian Bell. A well-known local musician, composer, singersongwriter, he didn’t hesitate to perform in support of the foundation. “What makes his involvement so special is that he is a Paris resident who is known by some of the WIW WI members and who have already seen his successful and popular concerts and know that his ability to entertain through both song and storytelling will provide an unforgettable evening of fundraising.

This event will be a powerful example of the community coming together to support our local healthcare needs,” assures Clarke.

Bell’s repertoire is large and includes both Canadian traditional music and his own songs, and instrumental compositions. He has performed across Canada and the USA since the late 1970s both in a number of ensembles and solo. Bell has worked on many occasions with Stuart McLean on CBC Radio’s Vinyl Café and contributed to numerous film scores, performed period music, and appeared in the TV series “The Road to Avonlea”.

As such an accomplished musician and as a proud Parisian, Bell is excited to play at home.

“Well, for one thing - it's just down the street! Since the pandemic has started to loosen its grip, I've played all over the rest of Southern Ontario, but not right here. So it's great to have a chance to play for the hometown crowd in Paris.

The local Women's Institute has always shown an interest in innovative projects, and this seemed like a good one to be a part of,” shares Bell. And to be able to contribute to such an important cause through his music, is a valuable opportunity.

“From time to time we all rely on the services of community healthcare providers - whether we want to or not! This was a perfect opportunity to help to give a little something back to the people who work so hard to make our lives better every day,” Bell writes.

The show promises to be truly entertaining and unique. To be held at the Paris Presbyterian Church, Bell is excited not only for the wonderful acoustics the church offers but also because he hasn’t performed there in a long time.

“I'll have my guitar, concertina, and maybe a banjo on hand. Folks can expect my usual blend of Canadian traditional folk music and original songs and stories.

Given the venue, I plan to be

brushing off a few of my Paristhemed songs to give the show a real local flavour,” Bell adds.

In addition to songs and storytelling, guests can enjoy local beer, wine, and cider at the cash bar. A Silent Auction featuring pottery, a signed print, jewellery, wooden bowls, gift certificates to local services and restaurants, small appliances, home décor, and more will also be held with winners announced at the end of the evening.

COUNTY NEWS Take Our Kids to Work Day! The County of Brant took part in Take Our Kids to Work Day!

Take Our Kids to Work Day launched in 1994 by The Learning Partnership and is the most recognized career exploration event in Canada. Grade 9 students across the country join their parents, friends or relatives at work to get a firsthand look at what a workday looks like in the workplace and what skills are important when pursuing various careers.

Grand Erie Aspire Job Fair Coming to Paris Job seekers are invited to come out to the region's largest job fair taking place over three days in three locations, with Paris being one of them.

On November 17th at the Paris Fairgrounds from 4 pm to 8 pm, people can check out a multisector and skilled trades event that offers an opportunity for job seekers to apply for careers and meet with prospective employers.

Organized Aspire, First Work's career exploration initiative connecting young people facing barriers to employment with careers and industries, is the first initiative developed by youth, for youth. First Work is a

provincially led membership organization, bringing together providers of youth programming and employment services, business leadership, academia, and government to develop and advance solutions for youth employment.

"The Grand Erie Aspire Job Fair is a great opportunity for anyone looking for work inside and outside skilled trades to connect with many employers who are eager to hire," explains Akosua Alagaratnam, Executive Director of First Work.

If you can't make the November 17th job fair in Paris, it's also being offered on November 15th from 2pm to 6 pm at the Best

Western on Holiday Drive and again on November 16th from 2 pm to 6 pm at the Delhi German Home on James Street.

By Casandra Turnbull The upcoming Remembrance Day service is going to look like years past, with a crowd gathered at the Paris Cenotaph to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers and to honour the ones still with us today.

"We are extremely happy to have moved back into an in-person ceremony. The last two years have been trying for everyone, including the legion. So we are hoping to have a large crowd there," said Donald MacLeod, the newly elected President of the Paris Legion, Branch 29.

Following tradition, the laying of some of the wreaths will begin at 10 am. Anyone who has a personal wreath to lay is urged to do so before the ceremony starts.

MacLeod invites members of the public to start arriving at the Cenotaph around 10:30 am. The

OPP will be blocking off the main roads around the cenotaph.

The Colour Party will start their march from behind the County offices at 10:35 am. Veterans, school children, Girl Guides, Scouts, and area politicians will lay wreaths during the ceremony.

Dale Kitchen will be the master of ceremonies.

MacLeod said he hopes some local veterans will attend, especially after a two-year hiatus from a full public service, but at this time it's unknown how many will be well enough to be part of the ceremony that usually takes about an hour to complete. If the weather is good, you might even catch a glimpse of a war plane that traditionally flies over the service.

"The Legion will be fully open (after the ceremony) and we welcome anyone that would like

to drop by for a drink and a light lunch," said MacLeod.

In other legion news, the annual Poppy Campaign is officially underway. Poppy boxes were placed at local businesses and will remain there until November 11th. The Poppy fund is the Legion's way of remembering the debt we owe to those who sacrificed so much. Last year, over $25,000 was raised, according to Poppy Chair Earl MacDonald. Don't be shy, make your donation at a participating business or if you see a Legion member with a poppy box, drop in a few dollars. You can also leave larger donations in an envelope at the Legion.

So far this year, through various activities and events at the legion, Branch 29 has donated $17,000 to help veterans and youth education programs.

This plaque is dedicated to William Arthur Moyle. Born in 1894, William worked on his family's farm until he enlisted on March 6th, 1916 (21 at the time of enlistment). He served with the Royal Naval Air Service's No. 3 Naval Squadron. William died in 1918 at St. Quentin. He is buried at the Arras Memorial, Pas De Calais, France.

The plaque is located on the place of his birth, The Moyle School, now the Olde School Restaurant.

S P O RT S MOUNTIES TRADE LARMER FOR WILKINSON! Big changes for the Paris Mounties! First there was a trade bringing #25 Jacob Wilkinson to the team in exchange for Captain Finn Larmer who is off to the Woodstock Navy Vets.

Next came a couple of free agents joining the team; #21 Caleb Hamilton and #20 Bhrett Hibbert. Caleb, who took a few years off from hockey due to Covid disrupting his hockey career, tried out and impressed enough to make the team. Bhrett, who was released from his Junior A Hockey team in Kirkland Lake and headed back home to St. Thomas, was still wanting to play hockey and joined the Mounties.

The other big news is the Mounties finally won their first game, beating the Hespeler Shamrocks 5-2! Hibbert opened the scoring with an

unassisted power play goal and Brady McLaren scored a short handed goal. The other 3 goals came from Kaidan Gignac, Ryan O’Keefe and William Matekovic.

This is a three game weekend with an away game Friday night in Wellesley to play the Applejacks (7:30 start) and another Sunday in Hespeler to face the Shamrocks (3:30 puck drop).

Saturday the Mounties welcome the Norwich Merchants at the Brant Sports Complex for a 7:30 start. The Crew Real Estate is hosting a draw this season for a pair of Leaf tickets in April that is available to ticket holders over 18. 2023 “Sports Hall of Fame” Nominations are Open!

The County of Brant is encouraging residents to nominate local athletes for the “Sports Hall of Fame”. To date 39 Awards have been presented to local athletes & teams throughout the County of Brant.

Ceremonies are held in Burford, Mount Pleasant, Paris and St. George.

The goals of the Sports Hall of Fame are as follows: 1. To recognize individuals and team achievements in the area of sport, fitness and wellness.

2. To recognize the efforts of builders of sport in the community and for the broader sport sector.

3. To foster civic pride by recognizing the accomplishments of local athletes, teams and builders.

4. To create public awareness of health and wellbeing by highlighting individual residents who participate and compete in sport.

Paris Performers Theatre puts on fan favourite show in front of sold-out crowds

By Bailey Zimmer The Paris Performers Rocky Horror Show is full of erotic nightmares beyond any measure and sensual daydreams to treasure forever. On Friday Oct. 28 and Saturday Oct. 30, Rocky Horror fans old and new alike joined each other to celebrate the cult favourite production at the Paris Fairgrounds. For two hours, fans were immersed in a world of science fiction, sexual awakenings, innuendos and heckling beyond comparison.

“I was trying not to drink at the time they were doing outbursts, it was just too hilarious,” said audience member Trina Lucek.

“It was perfectly timed when they did it.”

There are near ritualistic heckles when a cast member says a certain line, nearly all sexual or crude which give in to the culture of the play. Janet and Brad both have special nicknames that are shouted by the audience every time they are mentioned.

Janet, while discovering her own sexuality throughout the play, is constantly having her sexual nature pointed out by the audience. Sexuality is explored by many characters through different scenes, which, while advanced in its time, reflects modern views.

“My first instinct is to say that I am shocked that the source material is 47 years old, just

because of the nature of everyone sleeping with everyone,” said audience member Alex Humphrey.

“Also, the fact that there are explicitly trans characters is buckwild, as well as the one scene where they definitely had sex.”

Humphrey commends the actresses and actors who went above and beyond in their performance.

Before the performance, crew members dressed in lingerie handed out bags of popcorn for the audience to enjoy and built the excitement of the night.

As Brad and Janet went on a journey to find a phone to call home, the rain started to pour and they got soaked, as did the audience when water fell from the ceiling.

Throughout the play, audience members were throwing sponges, rolls of toilet paper and playing cards on stage to enhance the Rocky Horror experience. During the more dramatic scenes, glow sticks were seen swaying in the air.

“It was so good, they put on such a good show.

There was a lot of audience participation,” said Nancy Johnston, an audience member who saw the movie for the first time two days before the show.

As she looks around, another audience member Danielle Grundy gives a round of applause to the cleanup crew as they are sweeping up the popcorn, glitter and toilet paper.

“It was just unreal and out of this world,” said Grundy.

She also thinks this is one of the biggest productions the Paris Performers Theatre has put on and this type of show is going to bring out more and different types of audience and cast members to create a bigger and better theatre atmosphere.

“It only opens the door for so many more opportunities for other performances that they can bring out,” said Grundy.

The Rocky Horror Show is a fan favourite to many and holds its place dear in many people's hearts. The play immersed the audience in a world of science fiction, love and adventure and absolutely brought the audience to an alternate reality.

“I’ve always loved the movie and I couldn't wait to come see this and it didn't disappoint at all,” said Lucek.

People of all ages were watching the performance, from around 14 years old and up. Rob Grundy is happy to have attended such an interactive play and had a very fun time at the performance on opening night.

“Hats off to them, a great production. I’d come back in a heartbeat.”

COMMUNITY NEWS 14th Annual Municipal Agriculture Economic Development and Planning Forum The County of Brant co-hosted the 14th Annual Municipal Agriculture Economic Development and Planning Forum on November 2 and 3, 2022.

“The forum was very popular this year with close to 100 registrants, a variety of guest speakers and a bus tour of farms in the County,” said Alison Newton, General Manager of Strategic Initiatives. “The event was an opportunity to highlight to the rest of Ontario what Brant is doing to support the agriculture sector. Agriculture is the foundation of the local economy and the history of our community.”

The theme of the event was ‘Tradition, Innovation and Regeneration' and highlighted agricultural operations in the County and agricultural initiatives supported by the County’s policies and programming.

“Brant is taking innovative and progressive actions to support the agriculture sector including introducing new partnerships and

policies,” noted Newton. “The forum was a great opportunity to highlight Conestoga’s Agricultural Equipment Operator program that was established in partnership with the County of Brant and policies such as OnFarm Diversified Use that helps farmers to branch out and add to their income potential while enhancing the County’s agricultural economy.”

The event was well attended with representation from across Ontario.

“We’d like to thank everyone for attending including keynote speaker Brock Dickinson,” said Newton. “The sessions on workforce, agriculture and environmental partnerships, and agricultural systems were important topics to explore together.”

“Just like in other industries, building networks and sharing best agriculture and food practices is critical in the spirit of driving innovation and efficiencies,” said Lisa Thompson, Minister of

Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “Thank you to the County of Brant for hosting and showcasing their regional industry that proves to be a significant driver of both local and provincial economies.”

“Our Government understands that Ontario farmers not only grow the food that we eat, but they run complex businesses with workflow automation, supply chain and enterprise resource management systems,” said Brantford-Brant Member of Provincial Parliament Will Bouma. “That being said, the complexity of the modern farmer is exacerbated by the fact that they have to manage risks that are beyond their control: weather, natural disasters and market conditions. An event such as this underscores the importance of collaboration and cooperation in a vital economic sector.”

COMMUNITY NEWS Cake & Crumb Hallowe’en Cake Contest

A Paris business had its very own Food Network style bake off last weekend to help kick the Halloween season into high gear!

Bakers gathered at Cake and Crumb in Wincey Mills to take part in a Halloween baking challenge. A full roster of competitors gathered to show off their masterpieces as residents had the opportunity to sample cakes and participate in mini photo sessions while admiring some pretty amazing designs.

Cake and Crumb owner Katherine Doherty said she plans to host additional cake decorating competitions in the near future at her new location in the Cottage at 111 Sherwood Drive in Brantford.

A RT S & C U LT U R E * “Community’s Progressive Artistic Vibe”

By Carolina Saenz As Paris grows in diversity, so does the art and culture scene. Parisians, new and old alike, can experience this growth as new initiatives to promote art in town develop. Tourists visiting are finding a unique experience with everything Paris has to offer, including the talented work of local artists.

To dive into the Parisian arts and culture journey even further, two main downtown art establishments, Katherine Pickering from The Paris Bohemian Gallery and Taren White from Taren White Gallery, share their views.

About a year ago, Pickering shared her experience with The Paris Independent as an artist and gallery owner/ curator in town. With the hopes to keep promoting a diverse arts and culture environment in Paris, The Paris Bohemian Gallery continues to impress. Now in its third year, the gallery has established itself as one of the most important art hubs in the area. During this time, Pickering has witnessed a noticeable increase in the need and interest for art in Paris.

“Interest has noticeably correlated with the demographic shift in our community. Folks coming from locations where there is a strong arts and culture presence and expect that here," she writes.

In addition to this shift, Covid has played a role in making those that work-from-home want to refresh their space. “A need coming from societal and mental transitions. Self expression during and post Covid has definitely led to an increase of artists.

Also the boomer generation who were a tremendous artistic force are retiring and revisiting creative practices,” Pickering continues.

In addition to these, local events such as the Paris Street Jams (which Pickering created alongside Courtney McColl from Fizz Soakery) have been successful thanks to the inclusiveness for musicians and local patrons, as well as providing something extra for tourists.

On October 22nd, the opening reception for The Paris Bohemian Gallery’s new exhibition ‘Creative Ascension’ was held. A beautiful collection of over thirty local artists with a great diversity of mediums included fashion, food, decor, music, and literature.

It was an evening for the books. And it is no surprise the turn out was so great considering the wonderful ambience that filled the space where guests were able to meet artists, enjoy live music, refreshments, and marvel at the talent surrounding them.

“Our latest exhibition is inspired by our community's progressive artistic vibe and also how our gallery has evolved in the last year and ascended to this new level. It also shows where we are in our humanity, striving to ascend to a higher state of being. Art really illustrates this ascension,” Pickering explains.

In terms of the process of choosing the featured artists, Pickering is thankful that many respond to their open calls, creating a wonderful waiting list for exhibiting artists and an amazing selection.

“This show is a unique collection of artists that created from a very elevated place and represented their respective mediums in a distinguishing way”, she adds.

‘Creative Ascension’ cannot be missed and will be running until December 18th. “This show is a must see! I am so grateful to represent all of this amazing talent, and so proud of every artist's courage to share it with others,” Pickering writes.

With the holiday season about to begin, The Paris Bohemian Gallery makes shopping easy. Offering a variety of gift options to suit every taste and budget, and with delivery and gift-wrapping

available, supporting local talent has never been easier.

“We are so blessed in this community to have so much talent, and as we grow there will be more opportunities to share and experience them. Right now we are in the infancy of a new chapter, a brilliant ascension of culture,” explains Pickering.

Also located in downtown Paris, is the Taren White Gallery. As a third generation artist, opening her own gallery has been White’s lifelong dream. Born in Sydney, Australia, she was inspired from a young age by surrounding artists including her mother Patricia White and grandmother Magda. Their influence led her to pursuing Fine Art at the University of Guelph.

“Opening my own gallery has fulfilled a lifelong dream. At my opening I had childhood friends visit and say, “You did it!! You always said you’d own an art gallery one day!” When I was younger I had hoped to have my gallery in a big city like New York, but now that I am in my 50’s I think Paris, Ontario is pretty perfect!” shares White.

In the spring of 2021, White decided to make the move from selling her artwork online to opening a brick and mortar space to use as a studio and to show her work. “I knew I wanted to be in Paris because I was so inspired by the views of the

rivers as well as the walking trails. I am not the only one either, there is a common thread between all the creatives in Paris. We are all inspired by the flowing rivers and grounded by the beautiful walking trails”, she explains.

In August 2021, she opened her gallery and moved to Paris shortly after in October.

“Working and living here has been a dream come true. I have been embraced by the community of businesses, artists and my new neighbours. My little dog Daisy and I are a hop, skip and a jump over a little bridge to get to work each day”, adds White.

As for her inspiration, White acknowledges her fortune in having had two strong, creative women in her life growing up. Her grandmother was an oil painter and her mother was a watercolour artist. “I am inspired by my grandmother’s love of painting landscapes, you can view one of her paintings in my gallery. My mother grew beautiful English gardens at our home in Brantford. She had a love for painting florals with her watercolour paints. I have one of her paintings in my gallery as well. When you look at three generations of artwork there is a oneness, despite the difference in style and medium. It is powerful,” she continues.

As for her own style, White is an abstract painter and a lover of colour. An expression of her own thoughts and feelings, she is inspired by what is going on inside her heart. White’s recent collection is about Paris.

“The Paris Collection is about a shift. From past to present. From low to high. It is about rising from the ashes. Have you ever been in a place where you thought there was no possible way out? That the path ahead was so intertwined it was as thick as a dense forest? In that dark place I found the smallest spark. Deep inside me there was was a tiny, flickering light that said, “we can do this, you can get out”.

So the journey began, and it was one of undoing.

Releasing, shedding, letting go…each step the light within grows brighter. Here I sit, on a never ending journey discovering myself. Out of the forest and so thankful for where I am. I am in love with this place called Paris.”

While getting the space ready for opening last year, White had artists visiting daily inquiring about the space. It wasn’t long before she had a roster of local talent in time for opening. “Some of them have been with me since day one and have become dear friends.

A few of my local artists include Holly O., Wayne Wilkinson, Thomas Roberson and Karen Wettlaufer.

Since opening the local roster has grown to include Ralph Heather, Kim Clark, Brittney Traver, Brittany Hazeldine, Gord Barker and Jennifer Budd”, she writes.

Now about to enter Season 5 at the gallery, the upcoming Square Foot Show is opening on November 4th with a reception from 6- 8pm. Featuring the work of over eighty artists from across Canada, all of the artworks are original 12x12” pieces. Everyone is invited to enjoy some refreshments and discover new artists, as well as enjoy the launching of the Kate Spade New York giftware line. The show will be on for November and December, throughout which a renovation off of the back of the gallery will be taking place. The addition of an outdoor gallery will provide space over the river for painting lessons and workshops.

“I would love to see Paris’ arts and culture scene really

blossom. Community support for the arts is so important. The role we play in this development is supporting the artist and their business,” White continues.

And having identified gaps in the industry, the gallery offers three unique opportunities for artists to elevate and grow their business. “We support artists with opportunities to share their artwork with the public in a professional gallery setting, while offering the artist professional marketing and mentorship”, explains White.

Through the creation of an online platform called The Glow Gallery, over 200,000 artists across Canada are provided with a professional online selling opportunity, as well as resources through a supportive team of professionals specializing in wellness, marketing, and business strategy on the backend. The Glow Gallery also serves as a go-to database for available artwork to share with collectors.

“We also offer business development coaching for artists and creatives who are looking to clarify their creative, personal, and professional goals. We have created these opportunities to provide several levels of support for the artist”, White explains.
