HGTV’s Scott McGillivray shoots episode of ‘Buying In’ at Paris AirBnB
Country Spirit Wellness offers guests farm and charm experience!
By Carolina Saenz
When Stephanie Vandeven purchased her farm in January 2022, she did so by following her heart and dreams. Shortly after, she opened her Airbnb to provide her guests an opportunity to unwind in the country, but with a little luxury. Her story grabbed the attention of Scott McGillivray who chose Country Spirit Wellness Farm to be featured on his new HGTV show ‘Buying In’, scheduled to air on August 9th
Located right on Highway 2 between Paris and Princeton (just minutes from Paris) Country Spirit Wellness Farm offers a unique experience of farm and charm The farm is named after Vandeven’s horse Spirit, a 15-year-old Cob. “He's not a pony, not a horse - so I like to tell people he is my unicorn! He brings a special kind of magic to the farm, and he’s adorable!” shares Vandeven.
Having grown up on a tobacco and horse farm, Vandeven recalls spending much of her life running away from “farm life”. Fast-forward to today, she can’t believe she didn’t come home sooner. “I need space, wide open fields, and the farm-life - that's what fills my cup and makes me feel wonderful and as a result, I have the pleasure to be able to offer some of that same farm-charm experience I provide to my guests”, she writes.
With a background as a marketing and event professional, as well as a published writer and blogger, Vandeven’s life experiences have prepared her well for this journey. In search of the peace only country life can provide, Vandeven’s heart is full with her family, her animals, and finding joy in sharing farm life with her guests.

Country Spirit Wellness Farm offers a unique Airbnb service experience. A mix of farm and charm, guests can enjoy a little country but with a little luxury. Relax outside on the hammock, have a picnic, lounge, and sun-bathe. Inside, the modern farmhouse features Brant County’s largest soaker tub, a TV with fire-stick, great internet, lots of private space with farmer’s field views, stunning crystal features, and old barn-board and tobacco stick decor that balance the atmosphere and reflect Vandeven’s roots. In addition, outdoor activities and games such as ladder ball, badminton, and horseshoes are available. To top it all off? Incredible sunsets followed by Smore’s by the stone fire pit And in the morning, a Dutch continental breakfast featuring hagelslaag, stroopwaffles, fresh bread, butter, and jam.
Located just a seven-minute drive from downtown Paris, guests can benefit from all our beautiful town has to offer As Vandeven explains, “It's where I have gone to for countless years, no matter where I lived, to enjoy ice cream with my son, a delicious meal out, shopping and walking with my pup Karma, and we always brought our family and visitors from Holland here It’s the

Guests are invited to have a couple of hours break from busy city lives, relax, and get inspired and refreshed. Abasket filled with locally sourced charcuterie and everything you’ll need is provided. So, it is no surprise that HGTV’s Scott McGillivray chose Country Spirit Wellness Farm to feature on his new show. “He was lovely, and we really connected. He truly cares about the farm, and the success of it He came here to advise me of how I can invest into my farm to create an even better experience for guests. As a result, I'll be renovating, and creating a larger space on the entire top floor of the farmhouse for guests to book for stay-cations, wedding parties, special events and more,” writes Vandeven.

The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio (2005) Kelly and Evelyn Ryan live in Defiance, Ohio with their 10 children. At first glance their life seems idyllic; But Kelly (Woody Harrelson) was a garage-band crooner whose voice was ruined in an auto accident. He's resigned to a dead-end factory job that barely pays the bills and is given to fits of alcohol-induced rage. Evelyn (Julianne Moore), a stay-at-home wife and mother, deals with this abuse and their poverty by entering the jingle contests that were the rage in the 50's and early 60’s. She is very clever at it, winning more than her share of prizes, but her successes aren't enough to keep the wolf from the door. Fiona has just been admitted to Meadowlake, a long-term care facility near their country home in southwestern Ontario, because her recent lapses of memory have been diagnosed as a probable case of Alzheimer's disease. Closing the Ring (2007) is a life affirming film with nuanced performances by veteran actors Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer, Pete Postlethwaite, and Brenda Fricker. Younger actors Mischa Barton, Neve Campbell and Martin McCann also shine. Because of a plane crash towards the end of WW1 in the Belfast area, a newly wed Michigan beauty is deeply traumatized. A veteran flying ace ( Christopher Plummer) is in love with her. She keeps him at arms length. Her relationship with her grown daughter (Neve Campbell) is also troubled. ‘Nine fore Norm’ presents first donation to fire training program
MEDIA RELEASE - In honour of the late Norman Booth, the “Nine Fore Norm” committee has donated $5,000 to the County of Brant Fire Services training program.
“On behalf of the County of Brant Fire Team, I want to extend my sincere thank you to the incredible committee members who honour the late Norm Booth,” said Mayor David Bailey. “Norm was an extraordinary firefighter, colleague and friend and this donation to the training program will carry on the legacy that he has built.”
Norman Booth passed away on
April 8, 2022. Norm had the privilege of having 50 years in the fire service working for both the County of Brant and City of Brantford as a firefighter and training officer. Finding his passion in training, Norm was involved with the Brantford Firefighters Executive and the Ontario Association of Fire Training Officers.
Before his passing, the “Nine Fore Norm” committee was created by a group of Norm’s colleagues and friends. The committee organized a golf tournament in Norm’s honour to donate profits back to the training program.
“Norm made an impact on everyone he met within and outside the fire service,” said Josie Mannen, a “Nine Fore Norm” committee member. “His passion for educating recruits and assisting his fellow firefighters, inspired us all. We hope to make our golf tournament an annual event and continue to support the training program for our friend Norm.” The “Nine Fore Norm” golf tournament was held on Sunday, June 5, 2022 at Fescue’s Edge Golf Club.

Softball teams end season with weekend long tournament
Orange (Pumpkins) won the U9 Division Championship title at last weekend’s year end Paris Youth Softball Association tournament.
In a return to normalcy, the Paris Youth Softball Association wrapped up its house league season last weekend with a typical year-end tournament for all ages.
For the first time since 2019, teams gathered at the newly reconstructed Pete Lavoie ball diamonds (with some games at Syl Apps Park) to throw down in the final games of the season. The Orange Team, sponsored by Northville Pharmacy, took home the championship title for the U9 division. Considered the underdogs for most of the season, the young girls and boys rallied together for the title. It all started with three games during the sweltering heat on Saturday The team earned a position in the semi finals Sunday morning and after a two-hour weather delay, they faced a very strong Ayr team.
Despite a back-and-forth slugging fest, Paris Orange came out on the losing end of an 8-5 decision.
They were down but not out yet. They bounced back with an 8-5 win over Paris Gold in the consolation bracket to earn a position in the finals where they would once again play Ayr. Paris faced Ayr many times throughout the season, usually walking away with a loss against the solid out-of-town team, however, not when it mattered the most.
The Orange ‘Pumpkins,’ as they are nicknamed, played a solid defensive game and their bats were on fire as they celebrated a 13-9 victory over one of the top-rated teams in the league!

DOUBLE GOLD at Gaels Cup in Kingston
The U15 boys started the Gaels cup strong with round robin scores of a 1-0 win over Stratford Youth Soccer, a 0-0 tie to the home team Jr Gaels, and a 1-1 tie with Kwartha Inferno. Their whole pool was tight, and those 5 points were enough to put them in first place, and a semi-final game against the second-place team in Pool B, Kitchener TFC. Paris came out with a big 3-0 win to move on to the finals against West Carlton, who had not conceded a goal all tournament! However, that was about to change. Paris came to play and dominated the game, with players from the U13 boys team cheering them on! Paris scored within the first minute and never gave ground, ultimately finishing with a commanding 4-0 win to claim the gold. Top right is #3, Logan Santone.
The U13 boys were seeded in Tier 1 against some tough competition and finished round robin play with 4 points (Tied Seaway Blazers 1-1, a win over Peterborough City White 21, and a loss to Ottawa Gloucester Hornets 21). The head-to-head win over Peterborough put them in second place in their pool with a spot in the championship game against the Ottawa Gloucester Hornets - and a chance at redemption! They started the game with a stiff wind at their backs that helped them keep the ball in Ottawa's end and scored early in the first half. A second goal was called back due to goalie interference, but Paris held its one goal lead at half. Ottawa scored two quick goals, but the Paris boys kept the pressure up, and a beautiful late header off a free kick evened the score! With regular
time complete the game went immediately to 3 penalty kicks. All 3 of Paris’ kickers buried the ball, and Paris’ goalie got his hands on their third kick but couldn't quite deflect it – sending the game to a dramatic sudden death finish. Paris’ fourth shot found the back of the net and Ottawa’s final kick was a mis-hit over the crossbar. Paris wins another gold!

A Rucking workout you won’t forget!
Just for the Health of It! with Coach Shell
This summer at GFS we have started a RUCKING program two times per week. But wait, what is Rucking?
Rucking is when you walk/hike with weight on your back To make it even more fun, in our program every 5 minutes we stop and do 1-2 min of exercise, such as walking lunges, squats, step ups, incline push ups etc using nature around us (stepping up on rocks etc).
Rucking is a great form of exercise and can be done by anyone at any age or fitness level. It is like walking on steroids, as the added weight increases your heart rate, and the exercise in-between gives you a greater calorie burn then regular walking. It is not intimidating like running for many people and is easier on your joints!
In order to ruck, all you need to do is either purchase a weighted vest OR grab a backpack and
Have you ever heard of rucking? It’s walking on steroids. Using a weighted jacket, you walk and can even stop to perform small exercises along the way. Coach Shell can show you Tuesdays & Thursdays at 9 am!

fill it with a dumbbell or weighted plate. It is great to do on your own, with friends, or even your dog!
If you are free on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 9 am you can join us FOR FREE! Or try it on your own and email me to let me know how you liked it at gaudetfitnesssolutions@gmail com
Also, if you are driving around Paris and you see myself and/or a group of ladies with weighted vests on walking or doing an exercise, give us a honk for support!!
Coach Shell is the proud owner of Gaudet Fitness Solutions (aka GFS) She runs classes in person and online, offers video recordings of classes daily, and has coached hundreds of women to better health and wellness with her B-Lean Nutrition program. She also runs 3-4 large weight loss challenges each year that women in Paris and surrounding areas love to join.

Fireworks bylaw a hot topic at recent meeting
By Casandra Turnbull
The County’s fireworks bylaw was under review and up for discussion at a Policy Development and Strategic Direction meeting in July.
Manager of Enforcement & Regulatory Services, Greg Bergeron, told committee members amendments to the bylaw were an attempt to modernize the existing bylaw and keep it in line with recent changes in provincial laws.
Right now, the bylaw permits fireworks seven days before and after Victoria Day and Canada Day only and county staff recommend that timeframe shrink to three days before and after the two holidays to minimize the noise impact on residents and animals Among other staff recommendations, flying lanterns will be prohibited, there will be new requirements for the minimum space required to discharge the fireworks, fines will be increased as a deterrent and the new bylaw will include defining prohibited fireworks and prohibiting their sale and use in the county
If approved by council, the new minimum space required to safely set off fireworks is 30m by 30m and spectators must be 20m away from the display. It’s a large space that Councillor John Bell acknowledges most residential yards don’t have these days. “Should we take it a step further and say no fireworks on domestic properties?” he asked. Other committee members pointed out that would exclude homeowners who do have the space, especially in rural settings. Bell urged county staff to consider the ban in densely populated residential neighbourhoods.
Councillor Steve Howes acknowledged it’s a tricky subject to approach.
“It’s a hot topic in our community. There are people who love them and people who hate them, almost in equal measure,” said Howes. He questioned whether Bergeron and staff investigated the use of silent fireworks as an alternative. Bergeron said the silent technology is just not there yet and while there are fireworks with lower decibel levels, but they’re misleading because they’re not completely silent.

Howes also suggested staff consider allowing fireworks outside of the two holidays to accommodate the growing, diverse community and its residents
“Last November families celebrated Diwali and sometimes there are fireworks Have you had any chance to research into that and see if there is an opportunity now or in the future to offer that to people?” Howes questioned. Bergeron agreed it would be something to add to the existing bylaw so Howes put forth a motion to add that amendment to
the updated bylaw and it was seconded by Councillor Marc Laferriere
Diwali is a festival of lights and is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists The festival usually lasts five days and is celebrated between midOctober and mid-November
In relation to expanding the approved fireworks dates, Mayor David Bailey also recommended an amendment to allow firecrackers during special occasions, primarily on New Year’s Eve as celebrated in the
Dutch culture and Bergeron agreed it could be worked in but acknowledged there are federal regulations surrounding firecrackers
Councillor David Miller also asked staff to add a provision to the bylaw that states fireworks are strictly prohibited during fire bans issued by the County of Brant Fire Department.
The topic was deferred to council this fall with the hopes that the amended bylaw will be in place by the end of the year.
County extends temporary home-based business bylaw to 2024
The County of Brant is extending its temporary home-based business bylaw to September 1, 2024
The bylaw was introduced in 2021 as a temporary measure that gave homebased business operators the chance to conduct business from home The situation was brought to council by local business owner Shelby Stone who runs Sugar & Spice Bakery from her home off Rest Acres Road She’s operated the business from her home for years but a 2021 complaint to bylaw brought the issue to the forefront Many residents weighed in on the topic,
citing that the pandemic has changed the way people work Many no longer need to work from an office and have the option to work from home
The county amended the zoning to allow the home-based business pilot project to operate for a year It was set to expire this September

Platinum Award reflection of Brant’s excellence in data management for prosperous future
By Casandra Turnbull
The County of Brant was once again recognized for its outstanding efforts in data continuity, according to the World Council on City Data. For the third year in a row, Brant received recognition for its strong data management records, which helps to drive planning and governance for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
“This three years of data from the County of Brant becomes critical in examining long term trends…and directing essential city agendas, such as your strategic plan,” said World Council on City Data Representative Patricia McCarney. She presented the merits of the program and offered council and county staff congratulations during Tuesday evening’s council meeting. The recognition comes from the World Council on City Data, an organization that highlights the efforts of cities and municipalities who meet certain indicators that define smart, resilient cities and offer its residents a high quality of life and services.
Certifications are delivered based on how many indicators are met. Cities and municipalities can be awarded bronze, silver, gold and platinum status. Brant received Platinum status for the third year in a row. Scoring is based on 252 key indicators outlined in 19 different themes that range from the environment, governance, recreation, safety, sport and culture, telecommunications, transportation, urban planning and agricultural & food security, to name a few.
“The County joins over 100 data driven cities in over 40 countries. What unites all these cities is a
commitment to data for a prosperous future,” said McCarney, adding its an incredible accomplishment, one that’s especially hard to maintain during a pandemic
Councillor Steve Howes also commented on the subject in an online post: “The designation is based the WCCD’s analysis of our data, in comparison with other Municipalities, and is a direct reflection of the great work that our County staff are doing (especially during a pandemic).”
Key highlights surrounding Brant’s Platinum award include decreasing crimes against property crime, down a quarter since 2018, sustainable and managed growth (Brant has designated 28% of its land for natural protection), decreasing energy consumption in public buildings, a high percentage of individuals working full time in the community (notably employment rates rose during the pandemic) and recognition for the number of kilometers of bike and trail paths to promote physical exercise.

Brant Community Healthcare System facing significant staffing, service pressures
Brantford, ON – Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS) wishes to advise community members that long wait times and service impacts are likely to continue as Ontario enters the seventh wave of COVID-19 amid ongoing healthcare worker and physician shortages across Canada. Factors impacting services and wait times include:
-An increase in the demand and acuity among patients seeking hospital care.
-A large number of vacant frontline care provider positions and an increasing number of staff and physicians in selfisolation due to COVID-19.
-Ongoing community challenges including COVID-19 outbreaks that have impacted our ability to discharge patients in our hospital awaiting transition to long-term care and assisted living, or requiring support at home.
“We are incredibly proud of our team at Brant Community Healthcare System and grateful for their dedication over the last several extraordinary years,” says Dr. David McNeil, President & CEO. “We recognize the enormous strain on the entire healthcare system right now and are doing everything we can to support both our staff and our community as we navigate this complicated issue.”
BCHS staff and physicians continue to work hard every single day to provide the best quality care as efficiently as possible. We are working closely with our regional partners and the province to mitigate these pressures and ensure the continuity of care for our patients and community members.
Unfortunately, patients and families should expect longer wait times when seeking care We ask for your patience and understanding in this situation As we head into the long weekend, we remind the community that there are many healthcare options available If you are not experiencing a medical emergency, consider the following options before coming to the hospital:
-Consult your family physician if your issue can wait 24 hours or longer
-Visit the Urgent Care Centre at the Willett, Paris -Health Connect Ontario, to chat with a registered nurse 24/7 via phone or web chat
