Beware of the pogonip – it made the bridge above the Paris Dam disappear! The dense, frozen fog blanketed Paris Monday morning. Trees and shrubs were fragilely decorated with tiny parcels of ice. It was eerie yet beautiful at the same time. Pogonip is a term Native Americans used to describe the uncommon occurrence of frozen fog. It translates to White Death because it was believed that breathing the fog was harmful to the lungs. Perhaps it was an ominous warning of the massive amount of white stuff that would follow later in the week!

COMMUNITY NEWS Work to begin on reconstructing Market Street A multi-million dollar, two phase reconstruction project is set to begin on Market Street this spring.

The County is currently accepting community input into the project until the end of this month. They will tender the work in March, hope to have it approved by April with reconstruction commencing shortly after.

The first phase of the project will be completed in 2022 with phase 2 tentatively scheduled for 2023. During phase 1, the County plans to reconstruct Market Street between Silver and Capron Streets.

Along with full road reconstruction, the project includes the installation of a trunk watermain, replacement of the existing sanitary and storm sewers and sidewalk and boulevard improvements.

Approximately $4.5 million was ear marked in the 2022 capital budget for this phase of the project.

Community input is open on the EngageBrant website and has been since last April. So far, the county has received little feedback, said Mark Maxwell, project engineer for the County of Brant.

“I suspect that’s because the project is already including some improvements to the existing sidewalks for pedestrians. The more significant improvements for pedestrians will be in Phase 2,” he said.

One resident suggested the county should implement a left turning lane onto Capron Street for drivers that want to avoid long waits for trains crossing. It’s not uncommon to see motorists take an alternate route when lengthy freight trains pass through town.

COMMUNITY NEWS Market Street Upgrades For now, phase 1 will focus on minor adjustments to the road’s asphalt width, some existing entrances to businesses will be adjusted to improve traffic flow and road safety and tactile plates will be installed on sidewalks at street intersections, added Maxwell.

One concerned citizen on EngageBrant suggested the county implement a four way stop with well marked pedestrian crossings at Market Street and Spruce Streets. They’d also like to see Market Street widened to allow for a left turning lane as you approach the railway. Too often cars veer onto the opposite side of the road to make a left-hand turn onto Capron Street when traffic is backed up because trains are crossing.

Phase 2 of the project will require more public feedback. It will address more serious pedestrian safety concerns. Reconstruction efforts will focus on Broadway Street West from Railway Street to West River Street. One major change will include the creation of a sidewalk on the east side of Broadway Street W and installing better lighting for pedestrians. This section of roadway is a busy artery that connects Paris’ downtown to its north end. Many residents walk, run and cycle this roadway often and it is the only roadway that provides access to the trails at Penman’s Pass.

Once work commences in early Spring, Maxwell advised there will be traffic interruptions on Market Street. “Because of the depth of sewers, which are 8 m deep in some areas, the road will need to be completely closed to thru-traffic. The work will be phased so that access is maintained to businesses and affected homeowners will be able to access their driveways at almost all times.”

Residents are encouraged to review drawings and submit comments through EngageBrant, although people can engage in conversation in a method that’s most comfortable for them – by phone, email, social media or in-person discussion, said Maxwell.

COMMUNITY NEWS Continued from page 5 Cummings said he understands Council’s agenda to address congestion in downtown Paris, and that the removal of the spaces across the road from his business was a necessity, even if it meant losing additional parking spaces, but he struggles to see how the parallel parking is much safer than the angled parking. “You’re asking an aging population to parallel park. It’s easier to pull in and pull out,” he said. And the fact that two of the five spaces currently have a 15-minute time limit, further complicates the situation, and will undoubtedly result in more parking tickets as people fail to understand how to use the spaces properly.

Cummings suggestions wholeheartedly because “the people who know the best are the merchants who work there daily.” Chambers said he believes the ultimate resolution would be returning to status quo (angled parking).

Councillor Marc Laferriere noted he’s received generally positive feedback from drivers in favour of the changes, but he was still open to suggestion.

Council easily voted to remove the 15-minute time limit on the two spots but reverting the parking back to its previous layout would take some time and careful consideration. Laferriere suggested a 360 analysis which would include feedback from the BIA, OPP, and the county’s economic development department.

EIFFEL SNOW TOWER! Sometimes when life gives you a lot of snow, you just have to make a snowman, or snow fort, or even a snow tower! One creative resident spent a lot of time crafting this one-of-a-kind tower.

Word on the street is they have it down to a fine art – this isn’t their first attempt at an Eiffel Tower replica. While this masterpiece was constructed ahead of the most recent storm, other snow creatures and forts popped up around town (SEE PAGE 14) following another blast of winter weather on Thursday that shutdown schools, brought more snow, freezing rain and high winds.

OPP BRIEFS WOMAN CHARGED WITH DEFRAUDING EMPLOYER $350,000 A 68-year-old Brant County woman is facing several charges after defrauding a local business of over $350,000.

The County of Brant OPP charged the Paris resident in connection to a fraud investigation. The OPP were contacted after a representative of the business discovered an employee had stolen a large sum of money from the company. Due to the large sum, the Crime Unit took over the investigation and charged the woman with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime, over $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brantford at a later date.

TRAFFIC STOP LEADS TO MULTIPLE CHARGES A Brant OPP officer conducted a traffic stop on Dundas St E after witnessing a Highway Traffic Act violation. As a result of the stop, which occurred at 1:57 a.m. on January 31, a 41-year-old Brantford resident was charged with driving while under suspension, owner operate motor vehicle on a high without insurance, improper muffler, use of plate not authorized for the vehicle and fail to notify change of name.

The drive is scheduled to appear in a Brantford court at a later date.

S P O RT S WOLFPACK PLAYERS GEAR UP FOR PLAYOFFS

By Casandra Turnbull Recent restrictions may have halted hockey indoors, however, many Paris Minor Hockey players could be found honing their skills during the break on outdoor rinks and ponds. Finally on Monday, the Wolfpack returned to the Brant Sports Complex with many teams holding practices throughout the week ahead of the upcoming playoff season.

“There will be lots of hockey. Every team has 1014 games to get in and everyone still has tournaments to play,” said Sinclair.

Speaking of tournaments, the recent lockdown unfortunately resulted in the cancellation of the annual Paris Wolfpack Tournament named in honour of Lisa Dalpe. She passed away in September 2015 after a valiant battle with kidney cancer. Lisa was a past PMHA executive member and all three of her sons grew up playing PMHA hockey. Lisa was heavily involved in the community, so renaming the tournament after her was an easy fit. The tournament is scheduled to resume next year.

Silver blades carve up the ice as excited skaters return to practice

By Casandra Turnbull Skaters and coaches at the Paris Figure Skating Club are eager to lace up and get back on the ice.

Like many other organizations and clubs, they are busy planning for the remainder of the season, which is difficult to do when there’s no real direction on what could happen next.

The Club has 181 registered members, seven professional coaches and a board of directors.

When the province went into the latest round of restrictions on January 5, their winter registration was put on hold. As mandates lifted on Monday, registration was opened again for the week. “When the province announced recreational facilities would re-open, the board and coaches began planning for a shortened winter session. We had two test days planned for winter, which we cancelled the one to allow skaters time to get ack on the ice before hosting a test day in mid-March,” explained Lisa Campbell, president of the local club. She credits County of Brant staff for keeping the lines of communication open when explaining protocols at the Brant Sports Complex and that has helped the club to safely plan for the next few months.

Unfortunately, those plans do not include a fullblown carnival for a third straight year. A carnival is a year end celebration that allow the skaters to highlight skills they’ve developed, while having a

With several Skate Ontario competitions cancelled we thought this was a good way to allow the skaters to showcase their solo and we can easily make the format something that would work with any Covid restrictions that may be in effect at that time.”

The club’s coaches are national certified professionals. Paris’ CanSkate program was recently evaluated by Skate Canada to be in the top 5 of 100 clubs in Southern Ontario.

Plans for the Gala are in the works, so stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Campbell also commended the coaches who she said have done a tremendous job in ensuring the on ice protocols are met, while still keeping the skaters engaged, motivated and encouraged to learn more about the sport they love.

By Casandra Turnbull One in twelve Canadians is living with Heart Disease. Approximately 16,000 Canadians die of strokes each year and another 35,000 experience cardiac arrest annually. These statistics are worrisome, and without warning, you could become a statistic.

Last week I shared the story of my mom’s fight with cancer. She conquered the disease and we were blessed to have five more years of memories. Cancer taught us all to live in the moment, love a little harder, appreciate the small victories, cherish the heart-warming seconds in each day and to just appreciate the beauty that is right in front you, and thank goodness it did.

Without warning on an abnormally hot Thursday afternoon in February, my mom suffered a massive heart

attack while working out. It happened abruptly, she did not suffer, she was only 54.

So like cancer, heart disease crept into our family and forever changed our future. My story is just one of millions. Families are torn apart every minute of every day. If it hasn’t happened to you, there’s a good chance it’s happened to someone you know, someone you love.

February is Heart Month. How much do you know about heart disease?

Could you recognize the signs of a heart attack or stroke? Would you know what to do to save someone’s life, maybe even your own?

Take a moment to educate yourself.

Be prepared for the unexpected. If you want to make a difference, sign up for a CPR class. Lobby to get an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in your community. Speak to

your children about the signs of a heart attack. Teach them how to call 9-1-1. If you can, make a donation.

Paris’ best Igloo!

Story & Photo submitted by Mike Miles Herman Kruis looked out of his window at all of the snow and instead of feeling the winter blues, Herman felt inspired. He would build an igloo. And build it he did!

Herman checked the weather forecast and realized he had a narrow window of milder weather where temperatures were amenable to building his structure. "Good packing" as it were.

The result, as you can see, is the igloo that is situated on his front lawn at 12 Creeden Street in Paris. The walls are at least 18 inches thick and the height over eight feet. There is room enough for four standing adults inside. You can be a taller person inside his structure.

Kruis, at 6ft. 2in., has no trouble standing to his full height.

Herman formed the basic blocks with the aid of a recycling bin and packed the chinks between the blocks with the available loose snow around him, resulting in a very tight and cozy igloo. Once inside you can feel the temperature warming up. It truly is amazing!

Finishing touches on the exterior will have to wait for milder temperatures, but on the interior Herman intends to install a chess table, confident that with a few bodies inside it will be warm and comfortable enough to have a few games.

Got the winter blues? Take a page out of Herman's book and build yourself an igloo.

Herman says that it has been fun for him and his neighbours and also passersby. I understand that his grandchildren will soon be served breakfast inside this unique structure.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH Meet the first black female newspaper publisher in Canada Mary Ann Camberton Shadd Cary, educator, publisher, abolitionist (born 9 October 1823 in Wilmington, Delaware; died 5 June 1893 in Washington, DC).

Mary Ann Shadd was the first Black female newspaper publisher in Canada. Shadd founded and edited The Provincial Freeman.

She also established a racially integrated school for Black refugees in Windsor, Canada West. She played an important role in giving Black people a voice and advocating for women’s rights. In 1994, Shadd was designated a Person of National Historic Significance in Canada.

The Provincial Freeman An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 freedom-seekers — born free or enslaved — reached Canada through the Underground Railroad. In 1850, over 35,000 Black persons lived in Canada West. To promote emigration to

Canada, Mary Ann Shadd publicized the successes of Black persons living in freedom in Canada through The Provincial Freeman, a weekly newspaper first printed on 24 March 1853.

This made Shadd the first Black woman in North America to publish a newspaper, and one of the first female journalists in Canada. “Self-Reliance Is the True Road to Independence” was the paper’s motto. The newspaper figured prominent anti-slavery authors and even promoted women’s rights.

Legacy For her work as a newspaper editor and for her community leadership, Mary Ann Shadd was recognized as a Person of National Historic Significance by the Government of Canada in 1994.

The murderer fled to Paris to get on the next available train. MARKET STREET: HOTELS, TAVERNS AND GENERAL STORES

This photograph depicts the general store belonging to Henry Rehder at 11 Market Street in Paris, Ontario circa 1905. It later moved to 80 Grand River Street N. Several men and a horse buggy can be seen outside it. Other signs here include "Geo. Kerr Tailor", "'Salada' Ceylon Tea", "Post Office" and "Fire, Life & Accident Insurance.“ This image was printed on the fortysecond page of photographs in At the Forks of the Grand: Volume II by D. A. Smith.

This photograph depicts the J. Milton Hotel on Market St. in 1879 where Wright’s Variety is now. This image was contributed to the County Library collection by Janice Labron (née Cavan), the great-great granddaughter of the hotel owners. It was first known as the Commercial Hotel and, by 1876, it was the Great Western Railway Hotel.

A view of Market Street at Paris Junction. On the left is the Milton Hotel, now Wright's Variety and on the right George E. Taylor's mercantile business. It hosted a dry goods store, groceries, hardware, grains, coal, wood etc. Today it is Tito's Pizza. Beyond it is Henry Rehder's boots, shoes and clothing store. It is now a vacant lot as the original building burned down a few years ago. Next on the corner of Spruce and Market was J. W. Hillborn's store. On the other side of Spruce was the “Bucket of Blood” Hotel, a two-story full verandah building. It was gone by 1921.

I remember when I started drinking coffee in my 20’s, I was a dog sled guide out west and the days started before sunrise, I thought it was time I start drinking coffee to help function in the early mornings. We’d gas up the trucks at Petro Canada and I’d head inside for a half coffee, half hot chocolate. I didn’t like the taste of coffee quite yet, so the combo helped and got the job done. Fast forward 20 years and I Love/Need/Want my daily doses of coffee! I'm also a big fan of coffee beers but that's for another article...

M E N TA L H E A LT H Eating disorders affect both men and women Eating Disorder Awareness Week - February 1st to 7th.

In the last two years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of people reaching out to us for help with disordered eating. Disordered eating covers any unhealthy eating behaviours and worries about body image.

This is becoming a common issue in our society and affects both men and women of all different ages. Whilst we often think of women when we talk about disordered eating, men actually make up approximately 25% of all disordered eating cases. Unfortunately for men experiencing this, they may experience delays in accessing treatment as doctors may overlook the possibility of an eating disorder and many of the programs created are tailored towards women.

Common types of disordered eating: 1. Dieting and restrictive eating, 2.Self-induced vomiting, 3. Binge eating, 4. Laxative abuse.

Symptoms

of disordered eating: It is important to know the signs and symptoms so that you can help a friend or family member if you notice any of the following.

The physical signs of disordered

eating can include the following: * Chronic weight fluctuations * Stomach complaints and pain. * Changes in bowel habits. * Changes in menstrual regularity, including stopped or missed periods. * Feeling dizzy, weak and/or tired. * Fainting. * Changes in skin and hair (such as being dry and brittle). * Acid-related dental problems, including cavities and erosion of enamel (caused by bulimia).

* Being preoccupied with weight, food, dieting, calories and carbohydrates to the point that eating and managing weight become a primary concern over other activities.

* Being preoccupied with body image, body size/shape, a specific part of the body and/or the number on the scale. * Significantly limiting the repertoire of foods by restricting whole categories of food and only considering a very small number of foods safe to eat.

The emotional signs of * Performing specific food disordered eating include the rituals. following: * Withdrawing from social eating activities.

Many people who suffer with disordered eating report issues with low selfesteem, perfectionism and report having difficulties in their relationships.

Please know that you are not alone in your struggles with eating and that there is help and support out there for you.

If you know someone who you believe is struggling with an eating disorder, please approach them with compassion and understanding. Getting them help as soon as possible is important but be someone safe for them to share with. Support them through any treatment and seek the help of trained professionals (family doctor, registered mental health professionals with experience in this area, registered nutritionists/naturopathic doctors etc.)
