By CasandraTurnbull If you like the engineering, design and craftsmanship of a timeless classic, or you simply like the nostalgia they provoke, get ready for the upcoming car show hosted by the Paris Legion on Sunday,August 21. Branch 29 is kickin' it Old School with this Classic Car Show that will help raise funds for renovations and accessibility upgrades for the Legion's aging home. It's the legion's first attempt at hosting a car show, although one was planned for 2021 but cancelled due to the pandemic.

"We've had a lot of interest via our Facebook page and by email," said Roy Haggart, special projects coordinator for the Paris Legion. To prepare for the show, legion members have been outreaching to other car cruisers and attending shows to distribute flyers, added Haggart. Watch for lawn signs advertising the event to pop up around town next week too. on Page

“When you have an old building, the renovations snowball,” said Andy Moran, Paris Legion Branch 29 President. “The renovations are never finished!” Long term projects include making the second floor handicap accessible and replacing the flat roof over the lounge area of the building.

The car show kicks off with breakfast from 8 am to 11 am, courtesy of the Paris Lion's Club. Gates are open from 8 am to 4 pm Public admission is $5 and children are free with parking. Some car owners will drive away with awards, which will be presented between 2:30 - 3 pm. The winner of the President's Award for Best in the Show, sponsored by Branch 29 Legion, will have a significant role in next year's Car Show, said Haggart. The winning car's make and model will be the theme for next year and will be displayed on t-shirts and advertising. There will also be awards for the Best Ford, sponsored by Canadian Tire Paris, the Best Chevy, sponsored by Deuces and Eights Car Club, the Best Dodge, sponsored by Paris Jewellers, the Best Import, sponsored by Rusty Dog Guitar Repair and the Best Custom, sponsored by Dave Watling. Paris resident and business owner Ed McGuire is a driving force behind this Legion fundraising initiative. He is a member of a car/motorcycle club called The Deuces and Eights. The group of approximately 12 men all share a passion for two cylinder motorcycles and eight cylinder muscle cars. They also share a similar desireto help community organizations and clubs. The idea to bring a car show back to Paris, in support of the Legion, was an easy decision "We are all in the belief that the Paris Legion needs to continue its growth and as a club we decided, along with Roy Haggart, that Paris should once again entertain a car show," said McGuire. "Hopefully the weather cooperates because we have a great show, which we all hope will become an annual event," he added. McGuire will have his own 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner on display, the exact same car his friend owned in 1976 during his high school years, he recalls. "I've always had a passion for muscle cars as my father always drove a really nice high horsepower car as well," he fondly remembered. McGuire attends large car shows, Moparfest in New Hamburg being the largest, so he's very happy to welcome one in his own community. If you’d like to get involved in the car show or to find out how to register your vehicle, email legion29carshow@rogers.com or visit https://www.facebook.com/legionbranch29

The Royal Canadian Legion has a long history of proudly supporting Veterans. When the First World War came to an end, numerous Veterans groups and regimental associations representing former service members were created. Despite their shared goals, efforts were fragmented and unsuccessful. An appeal for unity led to the formation of the Dominion Veterans Alliance and, in Winnipeg in 1925, the Legion was founded as “The Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League.” It was incorporated by a special Act of Parliament and the Charter was issued in July 1926. On December 19, 1960, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave her consent to use the prefix 'Royal', and the organization became known as 'The Royal Canadian Legion." The Act of Incorporation was later amended in 1961 to make the change official. The Legion’s initial main objective was to provide a strong voice for First World War Veterans. However, the advent of the Second World War created a host of new demands. The Legion expanded to offer more dedicated support to Veterans, as well as those serving abroad. Today, the Legion continues to improve the lives of Veterans, including serving Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP, and their families. ‘This has been our principal objective since our inception, and we will continue to work for it today and every day forward.’

Paris Past By Chris Whelan The Paris Independent 6 LOCAL HISTORY August 13, 2022

The Paris Legion Branch 29 was formed in 1926 and by 1930 was boosting 100 members. The original house portion of the Paris Legion’s building located at 70 William St. was constructed in 1860 and bequeathed to the Legion in 1937 by Franklin Smoke. Franklin Smoke (24 August 1860 27 February 1937) was a Conservative member of the House of Commons of Canada. He was born in South Dumfries Township, Canada West and became a barrister. Smoke attended public and secondary schools at Paris, Ontario then proceeded to studies at Osgoode Hall Law School. In 1908, he was appointed King's Counsel. In the 1919 Ontario election, Smoke was an unsuccessful candidate for provincial office. His campaign for federal office in the 1925 general election was successful, winning a Parliament seat at Brant riding. He was re-elected in 1926 and in 1930 then defeated by George Wood of the Liberal party in the 1935 election.

“It was definitely a process to finally be selected. When we first applied it wasn’t scheduled in our area for a couple years. Once it came to our area, we were awaiting a possible date pending a US tour which never worked out, so we were pushed back again to the next year,” explains Spierenburg. Then, the pandemic hit and another two year delay took place. It was finally in February of this year that the RCMP team in Ottawa reached out with an amazing offer.

Bringing such an amazing show was not easy but surely worth it, as it is well known to be exciting entertainment and brings people in from all over Southwestern Ontario, says TheSpierenburgMusical Ride was last in Burford, during the 1996 Fall Fair on Thanksgiving weekend Spierenburg explains that the process to bring this event to Burford again was lengthy and quite eventful The application process actually started eight years ago The Musical Ride only visits certain provinces each year, and shows are grouped based on geographical location, due to obvious travel expenses associated with shows of this magnitude

A rare opportunity to enjoy the spectacularly acclaimed performance of the RCMP Musical Ride is almost here! On Sunday, August 28th, enjoy this event hosted by the Burford Agricultural Society at the Burford TheFairgrounds.RCMPMusical

The opening ceremonies will feature the Brantford Pipe and Drum Band as well as some special guest appearances. The show itself will feature a new group of riders and horses, who are excited to showcase what they love to do on tour.

“Since March of this year we have been working with the Barrie and Erin Agricultural Societies to collaboratively host the musical ride sharing costs and stabling requirements. The horses will be stabled in Erin. They will travel to Barrie on the Friday to show at their fall fair then back to Erin Friday evening for Erin’s Saturday’s shows. They will then come from Erin to show in Burford Sunday morning and travel back to Erin Sunday evening before heading back to Ottawa,” shares Spierenburg. “The Erin and Barrie Agricultural societies have both been amazing and very helpful throughout this entire process as they have both hosted the ride in previous years. We are so grateful for their guidance and continued support,” Spierenburg adds.

The RCMP Musical Ride is a rain or shine event. Doors open at 11:30am and the show starts at 1pm. There is free parking and in addition to the show, food trucks, RCMP souvenirs, kids’ activities, and a meet and greet with riders and horses will be available.

They wouldn’t be able to perform during the BAS’s Fall Fair as their show season was cut back to the end of September due to trucking costs. Instead, they offered to do a “truck show,” which is a one day event with one show. Thankful for the wonderful offer, the BAS committee made up of board members, associate directors, volunteers, and community members, began tuning all the fine details. Alongside the BAS, the Erin and Barrie Agricultural Societies have all worked hard as a team to ensure the Musical Ride event is a success.

INSIDE THE PARIS FAIR Fair’s entertainment line up packed full of Canadian artists

By Casandra Turnbull

August 13, 2022The Paris Independent

The Paris Fair is just around the corner and this year’s entertainment line up looks to have something for all ages for the children who love the circus to adults who love the country concert, so buckle up and let’s look at what 2022 has to offer After two years of pandemic related restrictions, the fair program committee is happy to announce the return of the country show this year. In fact, last year’s fair just wasn’t quite the same without the show, which is a staple of entire five-day event. “We had many phone calls and comments about this it’s definitely a tradition with the Paris Fair to have a Sunday night concert. We started getting calls asking who the acts are as early as March,” explained Cheryl Muir, Manager of the Paris Agricultural Society. So, maybe it was a chance to make up for what was missing last year, or perhaps it was just luck that two renowned Canadian Artists were available, but whatever the reason, if you like live music, you’ll be pleased to know there are two country shows planned this year, one taking place Friday and the other on Sunday

. Cont’d on page 12 Friday night concert show will feature Aaron Goodwin (left) and Sunday’s show will feature Washboard Union.

11

Remember, the concert is general admission and is included in the price of a one day pass. You can bring your own lawn chair or blanket but there will be people standing and fair organizers cannot control if someone obstructs your view. There are seats available in the bleachers on a first come first serve basis. And if you read our Paris Fair sneak peak last week, you’ll know there is a new licensed viewing area right beside the general admission section and directly in front of the main stage. You will need to pay a $20 admission fee to access that Sundayarea. evening at 8 pm you won’t want to miss Washboard Union, the first and only country group to ever win JUNO breakthrough Group of the Year in 2019. They have a total of 9 career (to date) CCMA award wins between 2016 and 2020 and are two time certified gold artists for ‘Country Thunder (2021),’ and ‘Shot of Glory (2017).’ Sunday attendance at the fair generally overs around 10,000 and Muir predicts approximately 1/3 of them return or stay to attend the concert, as the price of fair admission covers the concert as well. “It offers the opportunity for all to enjoy Canadian entertainment accompanied by friends and family in a welcoming atmosphere,” said Muir.

Friday night Aaron Goodvin takes the main state at 9 pm. He currently has two #1 singles in Canada ‘Boy Like Me,’ and ‘You Are,’ and has a total of 67 million total streams. He’s a nine time CCMA nominee and a 2018 CCMA Winner / Songwriter of the Year for this tune ‘Lonely Drum.’

Finally, if you’re looking for a familiar face or two, don’t miss ‘My Brother the Lion’, a local band performing in the Beer Garden on Saturday night All band members were born and still live in the County of Brant They will belt out tunes from the 80s to present day

The Paris Agricultural Society is proud to announce that they received a grant to help fund this year’s entertainment line up. They were the recipient of a Reconnect Ontario 2022 Grant, funded by the Government of Ontario with the goal of providing financial assistance to events re-opening after the pandemic, said Muir. “This funding will help pay expenses incurred for the fair such as Canadian entertainment, programs being offered to encourage tourism and visits from outside a 40 km radius. Tourism not only makes the fair a success, but it also brings additional economic benefit to the community.” Children can catch a cool science experiment or two this year thanks to the Fusion Talent Group who will be presenting ‘All about Science,’ a perfect blend of education and entertainment. The all-ages show will incorporate audience participation and a whole lot of surprises! If you’re looking for a fast-paced, high-energy circus, look no further than Circus Dubois. The award-winning combination of Michael DuBois and Viktoria Grimmy have five generations of circus performances between them and have performed at countless shows and theatres all over the world. The Great DuBois’ have an incredible circus tent where they will feature incredible feats of juggling, hula hoops, unicycle, aerial, circus stunts, contortion and of course magic. They were most recently featured in Hugh Jackman’s hit movie, ‘The Greatest Showman,’ and have performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman and on Britney Spears’ World Circus Tour, to highlight a few. Younger audiences can catch Eric Traplin and Barry O’Show again. These local entertainers perform a unique brand of music for kids of all ages throughout Ontario and Eastern Canada. Other entertainment shows you won’t want to miss include: the demo derby on Thursday and Saturday night; the Extreme Dog Show (daily performances); the kiddie pedal tractor pull; the Monster Truck rides ($10 per person); a visit from The Glass Slipper & Company in the exhibition hall; and of course BINGO on Sunday in the Exhibition Hall

The 5K Foam Fest rocked the fairgrounds last weekend with over 4,600 people participating in the one day obstacle course and run, hosted in Paris for the first time. “We had such a blast in Paris. What a great venue. Cheryl and her team were so accommodating and just a pleasure to work with,” said Michael Lambert, vice president and general manager of 365 Sports Events, hosts of the 5K Foam Fest. “We were so happy with the turnout and couldn’t have found a better venue for us,” he added.

Last weekend’s event was originally scheduled, pre pandemic, to take place in Kitchener at Chicopee Resort. However, renovations on the grounds made it impossible to host the event there so organizers scrambled to find a replacement venue and saw a lot of rural charm in LastParis.

Paris’ run was one of seven stops scheduled in this 2022 summer tour, other locations being London, Ottawa, Barrie, Toronto, St. Catharines and LambertWindsor. said early calculations show this summer’s tour has raised approximately $99, 646 for Make A Wish Foundation, which smashes the $50,000 goal set for this year. Figures are already on par with what organizers generally see in a 14 tour stop, said Lambert, adding that by the end of 2022, they should reach $150,000 in proceeds for Make A Wish Foundation.

Saturday’s course wrapped throughout the Paris Fairgrounds, starting near the grandstands by Oak Avenue and winding throughout the property, past the horse stables and all the way to the pond in the very far corner of the grounds. Participants made their way through 20 obstacles ranging from walls, mud pits and cargo climbs to giant inflatable obstacles, including the word’s largest inflatable waterslide. It was a well spaced out, with a signage in front of each obstacle, naming the obstacle and giving runners a chuckle as they read the cheeky description of the obstacle. “The course was amazing for us,” said Lambert. “It is flatter than other courses, but we found some good step sections for slips and hill climbs. We will for sure be back,” he concluded.

The Paris FC U15 boys team collected another gold at the Kicking in the Capital tournament last weekend. Paris was placed in the Gold Division along with teams from West Carleton, Ottawa TFC and Ottawa City Soccer Club, all U16 teams. Paris was the only U15 team in the division, but that didn’t intimidate them as they pulled out a big 5 0 win against Ottawa City in game one. They went on to lose a tight 1 0 match to Ottawa TFC and tied West Carleton 1 1. The 1 1 1 record put them in 2nd place in the round robin with 4 points.

On August 6th the Paris FC hosted a smoking’ hot U8 District Festival at Green Lane in Paris. A total of16 teams, including 3 home teams (2 boys, 1 girls) participated. All the kids did amazing, and a shout out to the rockstar volunteers for attending to the teams!

Given the subject matter in the play, including sexual scenes, outlandish and scandalous behaviour, no cast member under the age of 18 was cast. Mykytowich says the lack of clothes on stage will be new and interesting for her in her acting career but she is excited to properly portray MykytowichJanet. describes Janet as going from “prim and proper … to being a crazy, pleasure seeking and lustful young lady.”

One minor setback the group has had was getting the licensing for the proper stage music. Usually when buying rights to perform a musical, the music is included in the Originallyrights. the Paris Performers Theatre was only able to find rights for the play without the music. The group devised a backup plan to use a karaoke soundtrack for the worst case situation but eventually were able to find another company who had the proper theatre music to use. Both Mykytowich and Farmer agree this play will be a big breakthrough for the Paris Performers Theatre group and lead to even more exciting plays that break small town expectations of theatre. All cast and crew are excited to perform and experience the adventure of live theatre and bring the community together to enjoy a night of thrills and chills.

Beda is proud of the Paris Performers Theatre and their dedication in bringing this vision to life. “We have an incredibly talented cast I cannot believe the talent that is going to be in our show.”

The County of Brant has been chosen as one of the locations for an upcoming television commercial by Suneeva Productions. Filming will take place at Optimist Park in Paris.

“The most stressful thing for this is because the fans of the show just care about it so much, I just don’t want to get it wrong.”

“The lingerie and the heels are a little bit new for me … it’s been kind of fun to explore this stuff in a fun, safe space,” says Farmer. Farmer, while working on his strut, is excited for the performance. Farmer, learning traditional feminine mannerisms to truly capture the classic role, hopes to live up to the high expectations of the iconic Frank N. Furter character Farmer wants to do justice for the character many have come to know and love, the quirky and unconventional mad-scientist.
