Futuristic vision for historic building #forParisCentre knocks down barriers between church and community

A local church’s vision is attracting new and exciting events to Paris, offering residents a chance to experience shows and performances normally reserved for venues in larger urban areas.

Three years ago, members of the Paris Presbyterian Church knew that renovations and restorations were required for the historic building on Grand River Street North. It also gave them the opportunity to include the broader community in their plans, based on the belief that a healthy church welcomes individuals of all walks of life. “We recognized that by properly renovating and equipping the facility that we could have one of the best mid-sized performance venues in the area, something that was needed,” explained Bruce Mann, Executive Pastor at Paris Presbyterian Church.

And with that, the #forParisCentre idea was born.

Lead Pastor Joel Sherbino added that not only does the new centre provide much needed space for public events but it is also strengthening community relationships in the process. “One night I attended a DT concert hosted in our church. As I stood inside the sanctuary, I heard comments from concert goers such as ‘I can’t believe I’m in a church,’ ‘this place is amazing,’ ‘it’s so cool for a church to be used like this.’ By opening our church, we are knocking down barriers, and only God knows what will happen next.”

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT Initially, the renovation plans were scheduled to start on the exterior of the building. When Covid hit, plans shifted and members decided to take advantage of an empty sanctuary and the interior renovations kick started the project. They were able to preserve and honour the original beauty of the sanctuary while increasing its functionality with a large, multi-use, single level stage, upgraded sound and lighting, improved acoustics and wiring for live streaming videos – about $180,000 under the $500,000 budget.

“The work in the main hall is mostly complete.

The remaining work is in the basement and the west half of the main floor and second floor of the building,” said Mann. “These renovations will allow us to host other types of community groups who need meeting space but not necessarily performance space.”

And he added, “The biggest portion of the project is yet to come – a new entrance and elevator (off Emily Street). That will have a $1 million price tag,” said Mann who noted that will be one of the final steps in the renovation process. Right now, they are completing the basement renovations which will create a more inviting area for children and youth and on the main floor they will construct new washrooms, a catering kitchen and improve the south entrance.

Renovations to the second floor will consolidate all the administrative offices into one open space.

The basement renovations have a $150,000 budget while the main and second floor plans are pegged at $500,000.

To achieve their goals, the congregation launched a $2 million Capital Campaign and have reached approximately 60% of their target figure through donations and pledges and unwavering support from within their congregation. They’re actively pursuing various grants and community donors to help fulfill their goal.

“It’s been a process of change that the congregation has been able to participate in.

Change is never easy but as a collective group

we have chosen purpose over preference,” said Mann.

“Our purpose is to be #forParis and to engage with the broader community in meaningful ways.”

So what type of events can you expect to see at the #forParisCentre? Anything from comedy, to live theatre and concerts. Playful Fox Productions has an upcoming show on May 28 and 29 titled “Pirates of Penzance,” and jazz fans might want to mark June 3rd on their calendars for Jazz on the Grand with Heather Bambrick.

Organizers of last weekend’s Easter Egg Hunt at Cedarview Church labelled the event a GRAND success with over 300 people in attendance. Church Pastor Wendy Payne thanked all volunteers for making the event a success. Families gathered at the local church to participate in a traditional easter egg hunt, but also to enjoy games, treats and good old-fashioned camaraderie. COUNTY NEWS Firefighters say goodbye to member who brought Fidelity and Energy to the department This past week, we had the unfortunate circumstance of saying goodbye to Norman Booth. From his 50 combined years of duty to the fire service, Norm served with both Brantford Fire Department and County of Brant Fire Department with roles that spanned Firefighter to Training Officer. His efforts and impacts helped launch a great many recruits into service.

I was lucky enough to be one of them. I was fortunate to be included in the 2020-2021 recruit class for the County of Brant Fire Department where I asked Norm a simple question. His response will resonate through my time in the fire service.

On our helmets and sleeves, the County shield bears a statement that I wanted to know more about. For some reason, I’m drawn to that sort of thing. After all, imagery is chosen for good reason with a heritage as rite-andritual based as the fire service.

On our shield, the statement reads ‘Fidelitas et Industria’.

A quick Google search showed a rough translation. Prying as I’ve been known to do, I sent over a quick email to Norm asking

MEDIA RELEASE - The County of Brant is proud to present for the first time Camp Phoenix this summer! The first five-day free immersive camp is for girls aged 14-18 years. Camp Phoenix is designed to simulate real-life scenarios in all areas of fire prevention and suppression, search and rescue, forcible entry, auto extrication, basic first aid and more. Campers will also receive empowering interactions from people in all areas of the fire service, not just firefighting, through learning lunches which will welcome a new guest speaker every day. “Our goal is simple; to encourage the next generation of female fire professionals with a unique camp experience,” shared Fire Chief Geoff Hayman.

The County of Brant is currently home to more than 39,000 residents, eight fire stations including Paris, Airport, Burford, Cainsville, Mount Pleasant, Onondaga, Scotland and St. George and 185 firefighters. ”Only 5% of career firefighters in Canada are women. We’re aiming to inspire more women to consider a career in the fire service,” adds Hayman. “The County currently has 13 talented, professional female firefighters and we see this number increasing in the years ahead.”

“And just as the Phoenix rose from the ashes, she too will rise” is a quote from Shannen Heartz and has quickly become the camp’s mantra.

COUNTY NEWS Brant Youth Centre open to ages 12-18

By Casandra Turnbull The Brant Youth Centre is back in full swing again and anyone between the ages of 12 -18 is invited to attend.

Located at the Scotland Community Centre, the program aims to connect local youth and provide a fun and safe environment for youth to interact with one another and get involved in fun activities. It’s opened every Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and features a new theme each week.

This past Thursday, youth participated in Mission: Escape Night and next week they will get the chance to try their hand as dessert chefs.

The youth centre was operational before the pandemic and had a very strong membership in Scotland, said Lisa Koekoek, recreation coordinator for the County of Brant.

“When the county opened the Scotland Community Centre, they wanted to make it a

place for all ages and the youth centre just seemed to fit,” she explained. “The county thought it would be a great gathering sport for youth in local, rural areas,” said Koekoek, although youth from across the county, rural or urban are welcome. The county-run program was offered at the Syl Apps Community Centre a few years ago, but eventually closed due to low attendance.

The centre is designed to accommodate the interests of all youth with PS4s, Wii consoles, iPads, board games, lounging furniture and even a snack shack. Interested youth can check things out for free next week, then a $5/person admission applies for May and June. E A R T H D AY Sustainable Farming: A mixture of compassion, respect and environmentally friendly practices

By Carolina Saenz In celebration of Earth Day, we are looking at sustainable farming.

You don’t have to drive too far outside of Paris to find Ben & Kate Constable’s organic farm, where their environmentally friendly approach to agriculture widely reflects their fundamental values.

Fresh Ayr Farm prides itself in it’s compassionate, respectful, and natural ways of raising animals and vegetables. Founded in 2016 when the Constables had only a few chickens, their rescue dog Nessa, a foodshed, and a dream – it has since flourished into a full blow organic operation that aims to connect farming with community. It is a dream come true for Ben, who always dreamed of having his own farm.

“Farming was the first job I ever wanted to do (his first word was tractor) and it was a passion/ obsession all through my childhood,” he writes in an email to The Paris Independent. Originally from Scotland, however, farming was not easily accessible for him, so he chose a career in civil engineering instead. Both he and Kate pursued

their careers in engineering and medicine, respectively, for more than ten years until 2016 when their dream of starting a small farm became possible. And the choice to grow organically came naturally. “We live where we grow our food. We are out in the fields everyday surrounded by our crops. If we were to use insecticides and herbicides we would be literally spraying at our front door and would be restricted from entering the fields for certain periods of time,” Constable explains.

E A R T H D AY All vegetables here are grown from non-GMO seeds, with special dedication to soil preservation and mindful water management. While growing organically certainly has its challenges, they have learned to adapt. With the use of a fine mesh over the crops, most bugs can’t get in. But even if some damage is done, accepting it is part of the process. “There is a tiny little bug that loves to nibble on salad greens and sometimes we just have to accept that salad with some little holes in the leaves taste just a good as those without!”

Other than organic vegetables, the farm offers pasture raised eggs and free-range chickens.

Both vegetables and eggs are available through their Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. With a choice of small or large vegetable boxes, members can enjoy a weekly supply of seasonal vegetables for twenty weeks by picking up at

community pick-up locations, right at the farm, or by choosing home delivery. Through this program, eating organic becomes much more accessible. And knowing where food comes from, how it was grown, and by whom provides an invaluable learning experience.

“In addition to providing weekly veggies, we give weekly updates on what is happening at the farm.

Members are always welcome to stop by the farm and check out what we are up to each day growing all this food,” adds Constable.

Growing vegetables is certainly their passion, but it comes with a lot of work. Fortunately, they have a team of four employees that help make it possible. They hire local employees to strengthen the community bond.

So next time you are choosing your produce, keep in mind two words: local and sustainable. It’s better for your health and for the planet.

“Supporting local farmers is

super beneficial for both the customer and the community.

Local, freshly harvested produce is the most nutritious food you can eat, as in most cases it has only been out of the ground for less than 12 hours when you receive it,” said Constable.

As for the biggest reward as farmers in our community, the Constables said it’s sharing their passion and making connections.

“Kate and I find our CSA program super rewarding as we can feed a whole range of families for half of the year and we get to meet and interact with them every week. It’s great getting feedback from our customers and hearing how much they are enjoying the product.”

COMUNITY NEWS Combatting domestic violence & human trafficking OPP form new partnership with Nova Vita Domestic Violence Prevention Services MEDIA RELEASE - The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Brant County Detachment is pleased to announce a new partnership with Nova Vita Domestic Violence Prevention Services.

The Ontario government recently announced that they will be investing more than $5.9 million dollars over two years through the victim support grant program to enhance capacity to support survivors of intimate partner violence and human trafficking.

The Brant County OPP has been selected as one of 37 police services across the province as a recipient of this grant.

This funding will help the Brant County OPP create new public education materials for police officers and other emergency services staff to distribute on call for service. It will also provide a resource guide for victim and survivors of intimate partner violence and/or human trafficking.

Local media campaigns will be developed in conjunction with the County of Brant and Nova Vita to encourage victims to reach out for help. The grant will help hire additional staff, such as a transitional support worker, to

expand the array of services and supports provided to victims and survivors. It will also help the Brant OPP provide training to officers to ensure that they are equipped to use a trauma-informed approach when responding to crises.

"Intimate partner violence and human trafficking are heinous crimes that can have devastating impacts. With this new grant funding, the OPP is committed to continuing to work with Nova Vita and community partners to help more survivors and at-risk individuals get the supports they need, where and when they need them most," said Angela Ferguson, Brant OPP Acting Detachment Commander.

S P O RT S Flawless finish to season as U12B Ringette collects Gold at Regionals The U12B Paris Ringette team brought home the Southern-Central Regional Championship title last week following three shutout round robin wins that led to a sudden death overtime victory in the finals.

The action started against Burlington in game one.

Paris goalie Ethan Sickle had a solid game between the pipes, backed by good defense, earning the first 4-0 shutout of the tournament. Deanna Mugford and Gabriella Tuori scored singles and Natalie Van Houwelingen picked up two goals. Assists were credited to Deanna Mugford (2), Reese Hyndman and Natalie Van Houwelingen.

Fresh off an opening victory, Paris kept the momentum rolling with another shutout win over Richmond Hill. Sickle was once again credited for the shutout. Everyone wanted a goal this game.

Picking up Paris’ seven goals were Layne Lawrence, Maya Hoard (3), Hyndman, Van Houwelingen and Tuori. Assists were credited to Julia Maltby, Hoard and Tuori.

Determined to extend their shutout streak to three, Paris was all over Whitby and a strong team effort led to Sickle’s third shutout in net during a 6-0 final. Van Houwelingen, Hyndman (2), Hoard, Tuori and Mugford scored with assists going to Hoard, Payton Hofmeister, Hyndman (2) and Bryar Lawrence (2).

With three round robin wins, Paris automatically qualified for the finals where they faced against Burlington, where it appears they met their match. Unlike the first three games, the first period was a hard-fought, scoreless period. Burlington was the first team to get one past Sickle in net with only 6:38 left in the second half.

Paris was not about to go down in the finals after a flawless start to the tournament. With only 3:06 left in the game, Hyndman scored to tie the game and send it into a 15-minute sudden death overtime period. It was a battle of the goalies and the fans were at the edge of their seats as the ring was passed up and down the ice. Finally, Paris was able to score with a 1:32 left in the sudden death overtime with a goal from Van Houwelingen, assisted by Hyndman. The team’s coaches said the players’ skills peaked at the right moment and they were able to finish the season off with a Gold in their loop in the Southern-Central Regional Championships. S P O RT S U19B Ringette Team is South-Central Regional Champs!

The Paris Ringette U19B team had an amazing weekend at the South-Central Regional Championships, playing four round-robin games that ultimately led to a gold medal in the finals.

During the first game on Thursday, Paris played Newmarket in a tight game that ended in a 6-6 tie. Hannah Inkes (3), Isaac Halsey (2) and Kristina Oelkuch scored Paris’ goals, with assists going to Oelkuch (3), Kiki Loucas, Kara Sickle and Emma Mayhew.

Friday the team faced Sunderland and played an excellent game, scoring two in the first and three in the second half to post a 5-0 win. Inkes picked up her second hat trick, while Halsey scored the other two goals with assists going to Oelkuch, Mikayla Macdonald, Scotlynn MacDonald, Mayhew and Olivia Wight. Paris goalie Gloria Dignard played a strong game to earn the shutout.

Friday afternoon Paris was up against Newmarket once again.

Paris dominated the first half with two goals from Halsey, assisted by Mayhew and Scotlynn MacDonald.

The second half was a back-andforth battle with Paris scoring four more and Newmarket scoring three in the last five minutes of play for a 6-3 final in Paris’ favour. Halsey and Kiki Loucas each scored a goal with Inkes picking up the other two goals. Assists went to Mayhew and Oelkuch (2).

The gold medal game took place Saturday afternoon. Newmarket was looking to even the score with Paris following a 6-3 loss to them the day before, however, Paris owned the rink skating off with the 7-1 victory. Goals and assists in the first half went to: Olivia Wight, assisted by Inkes, Inkes, assisted by Oelkuch, Halsey, assisted by Mayhew and once again Halsey assisted by Mayhew. During second half play Wight, logan Cowie and Hannah Inkes scored, while Halsey and assisted.

The following morning, Paris was up against Sunderland. The Sunderland goalie played an excellent game as Paris struggled to hit the net. Halsey and Inkes each ended up sneaking one past the goalie, with assists from Congratulations on the excellent Wight and Oelkuch. Sickle and team effort!

After some hiccups and bumps, and pauses, caused categories based on their season ranking. The by the pandemic, the 2021-22 season of the Paris Tuesday League 'A' winner was the team of Rob Curling Club came to a close just before Easter.

The 'B' winner was Jeff Crowley (skip), With an increase in covid cases, the Clergy League Michael Johnston, Ashley McCarthy, didn't declare a winner for this last draw, instead and Mackenzie Yuile. COMUNITY NEWS County seeks your input to shape new Master Transportation Plan

A public consultation meeting was held at the end of March. PARIS ONCE HAD LOCAL TRAINS, TROLLYS & STAGECOACHES

Paris Past By Chris Whelan TAKE A TROLLY FROM PARIS TO PORT DOVER FOR A DAY AT THE BEACH! The first electric rail service to Paris was the Grand Valley Railroad. Its origins actually started with the Brantford Street Railway built in 1886. In 1902 the Grand Valley RR took over the line to Paris. In 1904 the line reached as far as Galt. The line from Paris to Galt was a constant money loser. In 1916, facing competition from the new Lake Erie and Northern RR, it closed. A new station was built in Paris in 1919. The Grand Valley RR went out of business in 1929, lasting twenty-seven years.

The second electric railway to pass through Paris ran from Galt to Port Dover and was called the Lake Erie and Northern. (Often called the “Late, Early or Never”!) It opened in 1916 and had 14 stations and a total of 35 stops. It differed from other electric lines in that it had freight and passenger service. By 1962 the Port Dover to Simcoe portion had closed. The Brantford to Waterford section shut down in 1965. The Paris Station was built in 1915 and was removed from service in 1955. It was demolished in 1981 and by 1990 the Lake Erie and Northern was totally out of business.

PARIS STAGECOACH (BUS) SERVICE: During the 1880’s, the stagecoach was a common sight on Paris Streets.

Almost every hotel in town owned one. The stagecoaches were sent every day to meet the trains into Paris. The coach above was owned by the Arlington Hotel and was driven by Frank Fry. The coach picked up passengers along Governor’s Road as well as the train station. Fry drove the stage for about 40 years.

Last week I wrote about the importance of mindful breathing, noting that most of us pay very little attention to how we breathe.

This week I’m sharing a few tips on how to better breathe.

Before doing so, I want to address the nostril vs mouth breathing experience. Simply put, the nose knows how to better breathe, and nostril breathing is best.

Our nasal hairs filter and reduce the amount of dust and pollen that lands in our lungs. Nostril breathing warms and moisturizes the oxygen we take in. This helps to widen our blood vessels and makes it easier for our lungs to circulate oxygen through our body.

Health risks associated with mouth breathing include reactions to allergens, asthma, bad breath and even tooth decay. Mouth breathing is also often associated with snoring and sleep apnea.

If you’re a mouth breather (and many people are), it may take a bit of time to return to the natural nostril breathing we did as babies.

An easy way to transition is to continue to breath out through your mouth as you start to explore mindful breathing.

Have you ever paid attention to your breathing technique? Simple breathing exercises help improve your health and sense of well-being.

With that transitional idea in mind (and I will get back to it), let’s explore a simple breathing exercise that will help improve our health and sense of wellbeing.

The first step is to assume a comfortable position. Seated or lying down are great options, provided that you aren’t hunched over or in a position that is going to restrict your ability to breath more deeply.

Lying on your side may feel comfy but it will limit your breathing potential. Sitting in a chair with a solid seat or lying on your back are best.

The key (and this is really

important) is to begin by observing how you are breathing in the moment, without judgment or intention to change it. Simply breathe and observe. Placing one hand on your belly and one hand on your chest might help you further connect with the experience. You may notice difficulty inhaling or difficulty exhaling. You may notice you are breathing in through your mouth instead of your nostrils.

You may notice your breath is shallow.

Whatever the experience, it is YOUR experience and starting point.

As you continue to observe your breath, start to focus a wee bit more on your exhalation and imagine your entire body relaxing with each and every out breath.

Here’s where exhaling through your mouth might be more helpful and that applies to nostril breathers as well. Some people find it helpful to exhale a vocal sigh to help let go of tension. In Yoga, we often refer to this as a “Letting Go” breath.

Exhaling through your mouth with sound can help let go of tension, tightness, discomfort and dis-ease more easily and it’s well worth exploring, provided you’re not doing it in a public place!

As you continue to release tightness from your body, you will likely find it easier to breathe in through your nostrils (funny how that happens!). You will also likely notice the breath will start to find its way into your belly and once filled, will expand further into your chest. This sort of breathing is likely better than the one you initially

observed and that is definitely a good thing!

This type of breathing is often referred to as Diaphragmatic Breathing, Abdominal Breathing or Belly Breathing. Whatever you call it, when practiced twice a day for 10 minutes, this simple and mindful technique will start to create a greater sense of well-being.

Added Tip - It can take time to experience deep abdominal breathing. Imagining there is a balloon inside your belly that expands in all directions as it fills with air and then gently contracts as the air is released will deepen your belly breathing experience.

COMMUNITY NEWS Chamber of Commerce and Women’s Institute partner up to host ‘Meet the Candidate’ event The 2022 Provincial Election is fast approaching and WIW WI (Women Inspiring Women, Women’s Institute) along with the Paris and District Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring an All-Candidates Public Forum.

The following candidates for Brantford-Brant have been invited to participate: Harvey Bischof (NDP), Will Bouma (Progressive Conservative), Karleigh Csordas (Green Party) and Ruby Toor (Liberal).

COMMUNITY NEWS OPP busy with rash of vehicle break & enters LAPTOPS AND OSCILLOSCOPE STOLEN FROM VEHICLE - OPP INVESTIGATING On Saturday, April 16, 2022 the OPP investigated a theft at an Andrew Street address in Brant County.

It was determined that between April 14, 2022, and April 16, 2022, unknowns attended the address and gained entry into a vehicle.

Once inside, they removed a two laptops computers and a Tektronix Oscilloscope.

PICKUP TRUCK REPORTED STOLEN - OPP INVESTIGATING On Saturday, April 16, 2022, at approximately 9:53 p.m., the OPP investigated a report of a stolen vehicle from a Grand River Street North address.

It was determined that between 8:00 p.m., and 9:50 p.m., suspects attended the address and removed a pickup truck that was parked on the roadway.

The stolen vehicle is described as a silver coloured, 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, 2500 HD, with 20-inch chrome wheels.
