A lot can happen during a County of Brant Council meeting.

Important topics regarding decisions made affecting your community take place within council chambers.

When I started my journalism career, about 20 years ago, a reporter would sit through the entire meeting, sometimes 5 hours long like the case this past week, just to hear a few stories of particular interest.

The newspaper’s eyes and ears were vital in small communities to give residents the important details and decisions made at council. While news outlets continue to play that vital role today, access to this type of information is available within a few clicks.

COMMUNITY NEWS SUPPORTING GO TRANSIT As the County of Brant is expected to grow to a minimum population of 59,000 by 2051, the need for more transit options is quite clear. Councillor Lukas Oakley put forth a resolution to send a letter of support for the City of Brantford’s proposal for Go Rail expansion to Brantford.

The City of Brantford recently petitioned the provincial government to expand Go service to Brantford, giving area residents a closer option than the current Aldershot station. The County’s letter will be sent to Minister of Transportation MPP Prabmeet Sarkaria and shared with MPP Will Bouma, MPP Brian Riddell, MPP Ernie Hardeman and Premier Doug Ford.

SHORT TERM RENTAL LICENSING PROPOSAL TURNED DOWN

The County of Brant Council declared Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) an epidemic in the County of Brant, following suit with more than 72 regions across Ontario. As a result, Brant is lobbying the provincial and federal governments to also declare it an epidemic and enact the additional 85 recommendations from the inquest into the 2015 murders of Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam in Renfrew County, Ontario, which provide a roadmap to preventing intimate partner violence from escalating to femicide.

The County of Brant also wants provincial and federal governments to provide the necessary support to municipalities, regions and their emergency and social services to address the epidemic. County staff has been directed to complete a Community IPV Action Plan, which should include an awareness campaign and consider funding a dedicated rural outreach worker through Nova Vita, and bring a report back to council before the end of the year for possible inclusions to be considered for the 2024 budget.

COMMUNITY NEWS The backyard chicken debate comes back to Brant County and hatches a new idea to bring local agriculture into Paris

By Bailey Zimmer As the desire for backyard chickens grows, council members deliberate a decision to allow birds in the town.

County staff put together a presentation outlining four potential proposals to move a motion for backyard chickens. The debate, with many delegations from area residents, unfolded in Council Chambers during the th November 14 Planning Committee meeting.

Option one is to maintain current provisions and not allow chickens outside agricultural areas. Option two permits chickens in non-urban zones. Option three allows chickens in all residential zones, and option four will create a pilot project to experiment with the success of backyard chickens, allowing individuals to house the chickens for an extended period of time before determining a final solution for the county.

COMMUNITY NEWS Exciting News! Paris Twisted Treats finds new home, relocates to north end

By Chris Whelan In a thrilling announcement, Paris Twisted Treats revealed its upcoming move to a new location. The beloved local ice cream trailer will soon find its brand-new home at 98 Scott Ave, Paris, Ontario.

The news came through a heartwarming post on the Paris Twisted Treats Facebook page last Saturday morning. The message expressed profound gratitude to the supportive community of Paris/Brant County, as well as to everyone who rallied behind the small, local family business. Within just an hour of being posted, the announcement garnered close to 500 likes and numerous comments, showcasing the immense excitement generated by the news.

The decision to relocate stemmed from an unexpected rent increase, marking the third one this year and raising uncertainty about the future of the King Edward Street location.

Paris Twisted Treats was given until December 31st, 2023, to relocate their beloved ice cream trailer to a new spot. In a plea on social media, the owners sought support and suggestions from the community.

In an astonishing turn of events, Paris Twisted Treats swiftly reached the final stages of the moving process in less than two months. The owners expressed their heartfelt appreciation to St. John's Lodge for graciously allowing them to use their parking lot during the transition. They also extended their gratitude to the County of Brant for facilitating a smooth and hassle-free relocation. Furthermore, they expressed their thanks to the remarkable businesses that offered assistance and support throughout the

COMMUNITY NEWS Artist Taryn Henry creates stunning mural inspired by Blue Herons along the Grand River

By Chris Whelan A captivating artwork by artist Taryn Henry is drawing attention and admiration in Downtown Paris. Inspired by the grace and beauty of blue herons found along the Grand River, Henry's mural has become a symbol of artistic expression and nature's influence on the local community.

The mural, created as part of the #MainStreetArtChallenge and the I HeART Main Street Program, is a perfect example of how public art can revitalize spaces and foster a deep connection with the community.

The program, presented in partnership with STEPS and RBC through RBC Emerging Artists, aims to support Business Improvement Areas (BIAs) across Canada in transforming their main streets into vibrant cultural destinations.

To bring her vision to life, Henry embarked on a process that involved immersing herself in nature along the Grand River, allowing her to form a profound connection with the surroundings. This connection, in turn, guided her intuitive approach to painting the mural, resulting in a stunning representation of the elegance and majesty of blue herons.

Dear citizens of Paris, as we approach another joyful holiday season, it is important to reflect on the remarkable events of 2017 when our beloved town almost missed the opportunity to have decorations or even a Christmas tree adorning Cobblestone Common. However, through the incredible generosity of Salah Bachir and Jacob Yerex, Parisians can now cherish the memory of a Christmas miracle that brought light and hope to our community for years to come.

On that fateful Saturday evening, just before the Santa Claus parade, the Paris Community Christmas Tree stood tall, radiating warmth and joy. Parisians gathered around, their hearts brimming with the holiday spirit. As the tree illuminated the night sky, the collective power of compassion and unity was palpable.

It is vital, even as time passes, to remember the significance of this

momentous occasion. The memory of the 2017 Christmas tree, made possible by the selflessness of Salah Bachir and Jacob Yerex, should serve as a reminder of the profound impact we can have when we come together in support of one another.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT Paris man Salah Bachir shares snippets of his fascinating life in his new book ‘First to Leave The Party’ Arts & Entertainment

Paris is a place full of fantastic people, residents and visitors alike, but did you know that Paris is home to one of Canada’s most fantastic individuals?

Salah Bachir is a national treasure, a beloved philanthropist, an iconic art collector, a generous benefactor of Brant and a long time Paris resident and fan.

If this is the first time you’re hearing of Salah, or you’ve always wanted to know more about the person in the fabulous house on the hill with the beautifully decorated Christmas lights, then you’re in luck! COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT Douglas Fairbanks Jr visited Paris a few decades ago, taking Salah up on his offer to visit. It was a memorable occasion for many in town. Pictured surrounding Douglas are Salah’s friends in his Paris home, including some long time Paris residents Don and Heather Berry and Holly and George Ounapuu.

To give you a little taste of what to expect, here’s a short excerpt about Douglas Fairbanks Jr visiting Paris a few decades ago: A few years after I bought my weekend country house in Paris, Ontario, Fairbanks finally took me up on my standing offer for him to visit. It could easily have been the other Paris, because Fairbanks was fluent in French and had starred in some French films.

He asked what I had going on, what I was working on, and I told him I was doing a few things for my small town on the fiftieth anniversary of the end of WWII. “I can come that weekend and say a few words,” he suggested.

Who better than Douglas Fairbanks Jr.? He was a decorated war hero who had been a reserve officer in the United States Navy and assigned to the United Kingdom’s commando unit under Lord Mountbatten, the uncle of Prince Philip and like a father to Prince Charles. A line he used to drop that cracks me up to this day is: “I was only saying to the queen the other day how I hate name dropping.”

Except, in his case, he really was friends with the Royal Family. Fairbanks wrote about all that and more in a memoir, Hell of a War. He was decorated at the highest levels in both the United Kingdom and the United States. This was way beyond movie stardom. The more stories Douglas

shared, the more I wondered . . . is this just one person?

When he and Vera arrived at the house, they got out of the limo and Fairbanks asked whether this was the town’s city hall.

“No, this is my actual house,” I said. “It was built in 1842.”

“Look, Vera, they have houses older than me on this side of the Atlantic!”

I couldn’t imagine why he would want to spend an important military anniversary making remarks at the war memorial cenotaph in the heart of a town with a few hundred residents, but that is exactly what he did, with verve and grace.

The Paris Star newspaper had mentioned Fairbanks would be attending, and the center of town was packed.

After he told the crowd a few stories about the war, someone approached and told me that his mother wanted to meet Fairbanks. Just as I was about to tell him that we had time pressures, that we had to go, the man explained that his mother hadn’t been out of her nursing home in more than a year but had insisted on coming when she heard her idol would be there.

Fairbanks went right over to the woman and before I knew it, he was kneeling by her wheelchair for a fiveminute conversation. I gave the son my business card so he could contact me, and Fairbanks later sent a framed, autographed photo, and a lovely handwritten letter. He told her she had made his day. He also sent me a long letter and photos, all of which we framed and gave to the local veterans’ hall. When we got back to the house, I thought he might plop on the couch in utter exhaustion.

Instead, he turned to me and smiled.

“This has been one of the loveliest days I can remember,” he said.

S P O RT S Tournament action at Brant Sports Complex this weekend Rep U15 and U18 hockey teams from across Ontario will compete at the Art Coombs Memorial Hockey Tournament this weekend at the Brant Sports Complex.

The U15 Paris Wolfpack will have two games today, Saturday, December 9th at 10 am against the Petrolia Oilers and at 3pm versus the Saugeen Valley Steelheads. They also played a game yesterday against the Sturgeon Lake Thunder. The outcome of their round robin games will determine if they play on Sunday.

The U18 Wolfpack had two games yesterday (details not available by press deadline) against the Wallaceburg Lakers and the Lucan Irish. They play again today against the South Kent Lightning at 4 pm.

Again, their advancement to the quarterfinals will depend on their round robin standings.

H O L I D AY D O N AT I O N G U I D E Gwen’s Christmas Magic brings joy to residents at St. Joseph’s Lifecare There’s still time to donate and brighten up the holidays for all seniors living in long-term care

By Casandra Turnbull All it takes is a little Christmas magic to brighten the holidays for seniors living at St. Joseph’s Lifecare in Brantford and a Paris woman sets out to accomplish this goal each December.

As the holidays fast approach, Dawn Sangster is very busy raising money for Gwen’s Christmas Magic for Seniors, in loving memory of her mother Gwen Ludwig who taught her the true meaning of Christmas – the gift of giving. The campaign raises enough funds to surprise every long-term care resident at St. Joseph’s Lifecare with a Christmas gift bag.

The idea was developed when Sangster’s mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and was admitted to St. Joseph’s in Brantford.

“She (Gwen) would give to the Christmas Hampers each year and taught us how it is more important to give than to receive, so I thought what better way to keep her memory alive than by making people happy,”

It takes a small village to help sort, assemble and deliver more than 200 gift bags to St. Joseph’s Lifecare – even some of Paris’ youngest residents are learning the value of giving, not receiving – all in memory of Gwen Ludwig.

Sangster explained.

When St. Joseph’s is at full capacity it takes 205 gift bags to ensure everyone is included- and that’s the goal this year as fundraising is already underway. They’ve reached a third of their $5,125 financial goal and are looking for supporters to help fund the project that certainly fills the Lifecare centre with warmth and love at Christmas.

an assortment of Christmas surprises - a toothbrush, toothpaste, a lap blanket, a small stuffed dog or cat animal for the residents to love (this is a favorite every year), warm nonslip socks, bodywash, a small batch natural ingredient lip balm, a Norman Rockwell wall calendar and a handmade ornament.

COMMUNITY NEWS GrandBridge Energy donates to PDHS Food for Thought student nutrition program On December 5, members of the GrandBridge Energy Donations Committee visited Paris District High School to make a $1,500 donation to the Brant Food for Thought student nutrition program.

With the number of students that are accessing the program increasing significantly, GrandBridge’s donation will provide 70 nutritious breakfasts per week for the entire school year.

It was eye-opening and rewarding

to see the Student Nutrition Program in action, according to GrandBridge Energy, who announced the donation in a social media post this week.

On December 2nd, Paris Ontario hosted its own Santa Claus Parade, attracting families from all over the town. Downtown streets came alive with festive floats, delighting children and parents alike, spreading holiday cheer and leaving lasting memories for everyone involved, including me!

Here are some awesome highlights from the parade that I wrote in this article.

COMMUNITY NEWS Other Holiday Happenings The main services of the Paris town and the Grand Erie district are Fire, Police, and Ambulance so they must’ve all made an appearance right? Correct! At the very front of the festival were police officers on cool motorcycles and awesome uniforms with police cabs behind them. Behind the Police, there were ambulances as well decorated with colourful Christmas lights sounding the classic ambulance alarm every

now and then, with the police cabs doing similar things.

And at the very end of the parade, there came Saint Nick himself: Mister Santa Claus and his twelve magical reindeer! He sat on a very detailed sleigh waving to all of the children that passed by, with the reindeer pulling it at the front.

They flew above snow-covered decorated pine trees and cabins, cruising through the evening sky.

Christmas is always a Claus for celebration!

Conclusion Paris’ Santa Claus Parade will definitely go down as one of the best and coolest (also temperaturewise) events in this quaint little town of Paris if it isn’t yet. From dancing to toy cars, to gingerbread people, to even Santa Claus himself, this gets you hyped for the holiday break of presents, family, and fun! Make sure not to be rude-olph this holiday season, Santa’s watching!

Happy December! It is the most wonderful time of the year but as a nutrition coach I also see it as the time of the year when people push off all their goals until January and take the 'tis the season to be jolly' a little too much to heart.

A lot of people will make their weight loss and health goals a 'future you' problem and put everything off until the New Year and then wake up 5-10 pounds more than they were on December 1 and have to work harder in January just to get back to where they were before.

So, instead of thinking I'm just going to stop going to the gym, give up my walks, and eat everything and anything over the next four weeks, put a plan in place that is maybe a little less than what you are doing but it is not ZERO. So, if you are normally going to the gym five days a week, you may have to cut it back
