SPORTS Female Panthers edge out Eagles 4-3 in high school hockey action

On Wednesday, the Panther Girls Hockey team (5W-4L) met the St John’s Eagles (4w-3l) at the Gretzky Centre.

The Eagles came out the gate storming in the Paris offensive zone for the first five minutes, challenging goalie Kenzie Coates to make some big saves St John’s opens the scoring and Paris’ Scout Hergott-Leader took a pass from Rowan Worral to tie the score at 1. St. John’s took the lead with 4:35 left in the 1st period to take a 2-1 lead. Overall, the Eagle’s offence spent a good part of the period in the Paris end.

The second period St John’s offence was swarming the Paris end of the rink, until Melia Montoya-Martin and Rowan Worral swarmed the Eagle goalie and Scout HergottLeader took the puck that rebounded off the goalie pad to tie the score at 2. With 2:39 left in the second period, the Eagles take a penalty and 17 seconds later Emma Ahlberg passed the puck to Sidney Kipp who took a shot from the blue line that soared into the top left corner of the net and a 3-2 lead. A minute later St John’s tied the game and the period ended in a three all tie

The pressure for the Eagle offence to take a lead in the Paris end was high with Paris goalie Coates also dealing with the pressure of keeping the opponents off the score board With 1:15 left in the third period, Faith Smith scores to take a 4-3 lead, with assists to Meghan Dobson and Sydney Kipp. St. John’s pulled their goalie for a player advantage, but time ran out and the Panthers side won the game. Next up is BCI on Feb 12 at 3 PM and McKinnon Park on Feb. 14 at 2:30 pm, both games at the Brant Sports Complex.

Boys Hockey

The 2- 5 Paris Panthers definitely had a big challenge this past Thursday, when they faced St John’s, who play a fast and aggressive style of hockey are undefeated this season.

The first period started out to be all St. John’s who was flooding the Panther end of the rink and forcing Panther goalie Brendan Seibert to make quite a few difficult saves. Seven minutes in the period, the Eagles score to take a 1-0 lead. Max Koekork and Jacob Woloshin had scoring opportunities, but failed to get it past the Eagles goalie

The second period was dominated by St. John’s, with goalie Seibert keeping the puck in front of the goal line. At the end of the second period the Panthers trailed 1-0

The third period began with the Panthers trailing 1-0 and St John’s continued their offensive barrage to scored two unanswered goals to make the scores 3-0. The Panthers scored a goal with less than a minute in period off the stick of Austin Hall for a final score of 3-1.
