Forged in Faith Welcome to the Annual Stewardship report of the Parish of Saint Mary of Colts Neck, New Jersey. The information enclosed reflects our financial performance for fiscal year 2020 which is the period from July 1st, 2020, through June 30th, 2021. Also included are our full calendar year statistics for 2020. Both show the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The spiritual and economic health of our parish community relies on the cumulative efforts of our Pastor, staff, councils, ministries, and volunteer parishioners. We would like to thank all those who contributed to the successes shown in these pages.

Honoring the PAST…Living the PRESENT…Preparing the FUTURE The Covid 19 Pandemic has been a challenge for us these past months. Every aspect of life has been challenged or altered. Things once taken for granted are no longer considered such. Lockdowns and being restricted from receiving the Eucharist was challenging to our spiritual lives as Roman Catholic Christians.

Together we have adjusted to the challenges before us, keeping our community together and re-convening our public liturgical celebrations as soon as possible observing the protocols and safety measures necessary to be in full compliance.

The use of technology helped us to continue to form and educate parishioners at every age. Outdoor community outreach opportunities helped to re-establish our special sense of community. You are to be commended for your steadfast commitment to our catholic faith and our parish community.

We continue to advance priorities in each aspect of parish life. There continues to be increased cooperation among the families who entrust the religious education of their children to our team. The process of engaging certified educators who are certified catechists and are fully compliant with child safety standards now lead most of our classes. We continue to fully implement this program wide in each option that we now offer. We continue to welcome new parishioners, overwhelmingly living in our parish boundaries of 07722, listening to their stories and sharing our expectations of their participation with us as bona fide parishioners of our parish.

We have embarked on a shared clergy team model of sacramental ministry availing clergy to support the parishes within our Cohort 13 cluster of parishes. Updates to our physical facilities and completing projects have continued throughout the pandemic. We were able to retain all of our parish paid staff throughout the pandemic which enabled them to support their families in a positive way. Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure continues to enable our parish to fulfill its mission. Your generous sharing is central.

We look forward to our future with a genuine spirit of Christian Hope. This coming year provides us an opportunity to pause and give thanks to Almighty God in a special way for our parish community. Our first parish church cornerstone was dedicated 1879; a resident priest was assigned for a brief period in 1887; our parish was served by regional clergy until the building of our current campus in 1972. This coming year we will observe the 50th Anniversary of our parish as we know it today. Pentecost Sunday 2022 (5 June) at 3:00pm His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton will be the celebrant and homilist of a Solemn Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving with our local clergy concelebrating. It is my hope that we will come together in prayer and song asking God’s continued blessing upon us. Put the date in your schedule now so that you can participate. We will be distributing a book to all parishioners as an Easter Gift to prepare for a parish mission scheduled 29 October through 1 November. Our facilitator will be Jon Leonetti who was with us several years ago.

I encourage you to take time to read the reports contained in this publication. I know it can seem overwhelming…you may wish to read a section each day. This report is our way of being accountable to you and how your sharing enables us to advance the mission of the church. Thank you for your generosity and commitment. Worship & Music

A Brief Introductory Note: This article deals mainly with the impact of the pandemic on our Mass attendance, ministry involvement, and the needs for the future of our worshiping community.

Mass Attendance and Worship Practices Attendance at Mass, active participation in the liturgy, and reception of the Eucharist are essential parts of our Catholic life when we gather inside the walls of our worship spaces. The numbers from this past year are both telling and encouraging. Following our re-opening in June of 2020, Mass attendance increased gradually during the summer and early fall months, before leveling off in November and actually increasing in Advent! Our Christmas Masses, however, were not very well attended, likely due to a number of issues with a spike in COVID cases in that time, a lack of family visiting our parishioners, et cetera. This was common not only in our parish, but throughout our Diocese, state, and nation. Attendance remained slightly lower throughout the winter months, increasing again in Lent to pre-pandemic levels. Our Holy Week and Easter services were very encouraging: not the same level as in previous years, but very well attended. The anticipatory Saturday Mass and 10AM Sunday remain popular and the most well attended of our weekend Masses.

Weekday Masses followed a similar pattern throughout this time. The annual conversion of the parish hall to the Lenten chapel has remained a permanent fixture, allowing us to comply with physical distancing requirements and accommodate baptisms using our free standing baptismal font while communal Holy Water was not permitted in the church. This also grants the use of this larger space for the children’s Liturgy of the Word Dismissal, which is expected to reconvene in the fall or early winter. We have also modified our method of receiving the weekly stewardship offerings from passing of baskets to stationary collection receptacles. These accommodations have been generally well received. Additionally, the number of parishioners participating in online giving has increased.

Our Ministries and Members Prior to our temporary closure in 2020, we had 162 active volunteers who gave of their time to serve in our various liturgical ministries at weekend Masses. At the time of this writing, that number has dropped significantly to 92!

There are several reasons for this great decrease. Some volunteers have not returned since the reopening of our church nor since the ending of the dispensation. Others have retired from their ministries due to health, or have downsized and moved from Colts Neck. Some ministries, like the Liturgy of the Word dismissal for children had to be paused during the pandemic, but should be starting up again in the coming months, as mentioned earlier.

Many of our volunteers work hard and often. And while this is certainly commendable, some individuals end up serving with much greater frequency than others; sometimes by choice, but more often by necessity. With weekly attendance just under 1,000, we should expect a volunteer base of about 20%, or 200 persons, yet we have considerably less than that. We are always in need of more volunteers in each and every ministry. Some have been hit harder in recent years than others in terms of retirements, but all ministries are in need of an increase in order to serve our parish well.

Worship & Music continued A secondary issue compounding the first is the preference of volunteers to only attend certain Masses. As mentioned previously, the Saturday afternoon and 10AM Sunday Masses are generally the most well-attended, but that is not an accurate indicator of volunteer availability. In the past year, the following trends have emerged: 

The 10AM Mass historically had the most amount of available Extraordinary Ministers, but now has the least.



The 8AM Mass was often the most difficult to schedule altar servers , but now we have several families who prefer that time. More weeks than not, there are none scheduled for the Noon Mass.



We previously had a large team of ushers; while our post-pandemic procedures require less commitment, we have seen a steep drop in the number of ushers available per Mass.

In order to alleviate these concerns, it is recommended that volunteers consider attending different Mass times and signing up to do so with our scheduling software. At certain times of the year, volunteering for more than one Mass per weekend is encouraged.

Finally, at certain points of the year, ministerial volunteers become more important than ever, and it is not a coincidence that these times are always busy times with family and out-of-church activities. The preparations of the campus for Christmas and Easter require a great deal of labor, not all of it physical, but volunteers are severely lacking during those times. The making of commitments to serve on Holy Days is also proving difficult. To use the same feasts and Solemnities as examples, there are 5 Christmas Masses, 6 Masses for the Triduum and Easter, plus the Good Friday service, each requiring many hands to function efficiently, and we often go with empty positions for many of those Masses. At these times, when Mass attendance is great as family, friends and visitors join us for worship, it is ever more critical to fully staff our ministries.

All Things Musical Our music ministry continues to evolve as we strive to be more in line with the Universal Church, using guiding documents such as the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, with a focus on solid theology, well-written hymns and songs, liturgically accurate texts and the occasional challenge piece for the choir.

Beginning Advent 2019 we adopted a new worship resource for the pews, The Book of Sacred Liturgy, which was selected after input from many parish members and stakeholders. It is a fine publication, containing readings, psalms, antiphons, etc. for every single day of the year, and a variety of hymns and songs, both new and old, to add to our worship experience.

As with all of our ministries, we saw a small decrease in music ministry. Calling attention to our congregation size once more, our music ministry should have double the amount of members that it currently does, especially where the choir and handbell ensemble are concerned. As music is an integral part of the liturgical experience, we should strive to always offer our best to the Lord, and make music to his name.

Our annual summer concert series which began in 2018 had to pause for 2020 and 2021, but we expect its return in 2022. We are also exploring other opportunities for the sharing of music outside of Mass.

David Maliakel, our principal cantor for the last few years, pursued a career change in June 2021, and left his employ at our parish. We thank him for the countless contributions he made to the livelihood of our music ministry.

We are pleased to welcome Mrs. Jill Russo as our new principal cantor, who will also serve as an associate organist when needed, and assist in other aspects of our music ministry.

As always, the music ministry thrives with larger numbers and all who are inclined are encouraged to join.

Worship & Music continued Final Thoughts We are a strong, prayerful, and active faith community. The challenge remains that a smaller than average percentage of active parishioners are engaged in ministry. In the fall or early winter, there will be a ministry fair in our parish. Representatives from each of our ministries will be on hand to answer any questions that parishioners may have about the intricacies and expectations of our many ministries. I encourage all of our members to prayerfully consider giving some of their time and talent to the community. Whether it be singing in the choir or ringing with the handbells, acting as a substitute usher on Holy Days, giving up a few hours to assist with the Christmas decorations, or wherever the Spirt directs you, the community is always grateful for the contributions of its members.

Last year was extraordinary to the fullest extent of the word. After some months filled with uncertainty we started to emerge from a global pandemic, vaccines were made available, businesses reopened and life recovered some sense of normality. At the parish level, matters followed the directives of the Governor of New Jersey and our Bishop of Trenton: stage by stage we implemented measures for the safety of our parishioners coming to worship at St Mary. The Parish Office reopened. Religious Education classes resumed in the fall. Parish in person meetings were possible again. Some projects and work in our facilities were also scheduled later in the year.

Let’s review the accomplishments and highlights of this past fiscal year.

STEWARDSHIP During the fall we launched our Offertory Recovery Program with the objective of recovering the revenue we lost when the pandemic started in March 2020 and in the months following. The response and support were tremendous and we were able to close the gap in revenue caused during the months we were closed. Also our operating income (Sunday offerings) reached the amount given before the pandemic. Our Sunday offering weekly average per parishioner household increased from $43.47 to $56.97. We thank all our parishioners who stepped up and made this possible.

Other parishioners approached our Pastor to make special contributions for particular projects and other plans: 

$138,600 from a parishioner for the Narthex Completion Project - Phase I which included: space acoustic treatment; light fixtures upgrade; dome building; spotlights installation; statue of the Blessed Mother Seat of Wisdom and pedestal.



$100,000 from a charitable foundation established by a former parishioner for building the Childcare Center Play Area (planning has begun).



$100,000 from a parishioner who wishes to remain anonymous for the creation of a Trust to provide for future needs of the parish.

In addition, the bequest of our late parishioner Mr. Robert Golar was disbursed and the parish received a restricted bequest totaling $260,869 as one of the beneficiaries. Per Mr Golar’s Last Will & Testament the bequest funds have been restricted for: the Buildings fund ($16,304) and for the charitable outreach of the

Temporal Administration continued parish ($244,565) which have been and will be distributed for several years.

In response to the above the parish administration has been extremely vigilant and responsible to manage those restricted gifts in the manner intended by the donors and continue to use our ordinary income to fund the parish operation, annual expenses and maintenance projects undertaken in the fiscal year.

The Diocesan capital campaign Faith to Move Mountains continues on the redemption stage and most major pledges should be completed by 2022. $1,185,611 have been received by 30 June 2021 out of the total pledged of over $1.3 million. We remind and encourage our parishioners to continue making your pledge payments as the parish benefits from the rebates received from the campaign. It is important to clarify that FTMM rebate funds are restricted for the items listed in the case statement which are: 1. Life Safety Updates for Saint Mary Parish Campus, including magnetic locks, emergency exit upgrades, and identification cards.

2. Internal Church Lighting upgrade.

3. Emergency and Stewardship fund to help provide parish support during times of emergency or financial strain (Irrevocable Trust).

The Annual Catholic Appeal was launched in February with the same goal as in recent years of $75,000. At the time of preparing this report 186 households have pledged to the ACA raising $78,426, including one gift of $20,000. A total of $65,693 has already been paid to date. We are on target to reach our goal this year and receive a rebate in the winter. As it was reported in prior years, we did not make goal the past 2 years.

We would like to remind our parishioners it is important to support the Annual Catholic Appeal as it provides funding for the diocesan ministries and programs which benefit the larger church, while at the same time our parish receives a rebate every year we reach our goal.

FACILITIES The following are some of the capital projects we have completed this past fiscal year at our facilities: Parking lot patching, sweeping and re-striping: In the fall we continued this project we started a couple of years ago and we had repaved the remaining section of the driveway exiting to Route 34 and adjacent damaged areas in the north parking lot. In the spring right before Easter we had a major sweeping of the entire parking lot and re-striping of lines, traffic arrows and handicap signs. This staged maintenance should last for some years until we are ready to repave the entire parking lot while also re-pipe underground storm drainage from our buildings.

New LED lights for sign on Route 34: The original sodium lights illuminating the parish sign were already showing signs of decay, fixture stands were breaking and becoming a maintenance nightmare. We asked a lighting consultant to search for the ideal product for this application. New LED fixtures, new photocell sensor, GFI outlets and new time clock were installed in the fall making our sign more prominent at night and attractive for those driving by our property.

Meeting room: The rooms next to the Spiritual Center chapel (originally intended to be used as confessionals and crisis ministry room) had become storage for liturgical articles, office supplies and old furniture. The plan was to convert the 3 rooms and hallway into one room for clergy to meet with individuals, couples or staff.

The existing concrete block walls between the rooms, 8 ft high sheetrock ceiling and old lights were demolished; walls to outside were insulated and vapor barrier installed; the entire room was sheetrocked and

painted; a new ceiling grid was installed at 9ft with new ceiling tiles and LED light fixtures; new electric outlets and switches have been installed. In addition, the oak desk which was originally used in the church office at Heyers Mill Rd has been refinished by parishioner Catherine Love and will be placed in this room. New carpet tiles are scheduled to be installed in the next few weeks both in the clergy meeting room and the adjacent chapel, which has been repurposed as a meeting room because it is not large enough to accommodate increasing attendance at daily mass throughout the year.

Detention basins inlets/outlets maintenance: It had been a number of years since the inlets and outlets in the detention basins were maintained and the grassy areas around them were all muddy, collecting debris and difficult to reach by the landscaping contractor. We had the stone removed, new dirt brought in and set with the appropriate pitch to drain and fresh rocks were added to properly filter storm water collected from the buildings and parking lot.

Parish house backyard grading and re-fencing: When the parish acquired the property in late 2016 to serve as the residence for the clergy, it was clear we had to do some necessary work to address maintenance deferred by previous owners. The backyard had a slight grade pitch towards the house and moisture was setting in the basement. The flag stone walkway connecting the outside gates with the back doors to the yard was poorly installed, had failed and was cracking the mortar joints. The fence around showed years of neglect and had rotted due to rain, snow and strong winds. We budgeted the funds to address all of the pending issues for several years and were unable until now In addition, we were able to install new underground electric conduit for future service upgrade; upgrade the existing well pump and main feed to the house; install additional irrigation lines to the planting beds; and replace damaged stone walkways and grass with architectural turf as a case for future application in areas of the main campus.

OUTREACH Our partner organizations assisting the poor and needy in our community resumed their services as the restrictions for the pandemic were lifted. Requests for assistance from St Mary Parish started arriving again, especially as the festivities at the end of the calendar year approached.

The Thanksgiving Food drive hit another record of support last year. Parishioners massively supported the thanksgiving food collection and provided monetary donations to purchase turkeys in a true spirit of solidarity, perhaps intensified by the circumstances due to COVID-19. 205 grocery bags for Thanksgiving dinner and over 75 bags of mixed groceries were distributed to the needy in our larger community. Additionally, potatoes, onions, rutabagas, and 180 turkeys were donated.

The Tree of Love, Sponsor A Family and our direct Charitable Appeals support made Christmas last year very special for hundreds of children and their families. Also, new outreach efforts like the Fishers of Men food collection for Ash Wednesday and the soap collection to support the Soap S.A.C.K organization were innovative and engaged families in the Religious Education program through an intergenerational activity.

selection of community building events such as Agape, Halloween Halls, Advent Pancake Breakfast, or the Easter Egg Hunt. However, we hosted 2 successful parish grounds cleanups in the fall and spring. We had not had that level of participation for a few years. Dozens of volunteer families and teens helped us rake leaves, collect brush, clean planting beds, plant flowers in the spring and tidy up our property in preparation for the major Holy Days of Christmas and Easter.

We want to close this report acknowledging the efforts and stewardship shown by our parishioners this last year.

The above would have not been possible without YOU. As we enter a new year with certain skepticism for the COVID-19 reports of new strains, we are confident that God will continue to guide His Church on its mission. We have plans to continue doing work in our facilities, both for maintenance and upgrades which require your continued financial support. These projects include: continue LED lights upgrade throughout campus; Church lighting upgrade with seed money from Faith to Move Mountains; and Narthex completion – Phase II through a generous gift. Fiscal Overview: Year Ending June 30th, 2021 Susan Lambert, CPA The Parish of Saint Mary has navigated well the Covid-19 Pandemic from a financial perspective. Much of this is a direct result of the faithfulness of the parishioners and their participation in the Offertory Recovery Program as well as good counsel from trustees, finance council members and other stakeholders. Here are some of the highlights: 

Offertory Recovery Program: $92,268.00 increase realized in weekly offerings;



Government PPP Loan/Grant: $101,863.00 increased revenue;



Faith to Move Mountains Rebate & Bequest/Legacy Gift: $180,000.00;

 Forward In Faith Parish Trust: $180,000.00 established as a result of the FTMM Case Statement and a Legacy Gift to begin to provide for long-term parish financial stability; 

Overall Expenses: $121,496.00 higher than previous year due to deferred building repairs, increased care of grounds (especially excessive snow removal) and maintenance supplies (covid related);

The overall financial condition: 

Accrual Method is used as mandated by the Diocese of Trenton;



Mortgage Principal Payments: $31,211.00 (Millennium Project/Church Mortgage) paid in full;



Catholic School Co-sponsorship: $55,823.00 (previous unpaid balance) paid in full;



Forward in Faith Trust Cash Transfer: $180,000.00



Revenue over Expenses: $283,105.00 - $267,034.00 = $16,071.00 cash on hand 30 June 2021



Vendor Payables Balance: $84,082.00 (unpaid invoices as of 30 June 2021);



Building Loan (2016) for residence: $825,000.00 principal & interest payments begin November 2021 ($7,966.26) with a balloon payment October 2026; Small Business Administration 2021 EIDL: $150,000.00 loan was received for parish co-vid emergency.

This money was loaned at the not for profit rate of 2.75% fixed with a 30 year payoff.

The interest has been deferred for the first and second years. It is anticipated that our parish will pay off this note during the Fiscal Year 2026-27;



Budget projections for the Fiscal Year Ending 30 June 2022 anticipate a deficit of $32,808.00.

Much of this can be attributed to no additional PPP grant, no one time gifts that were realized in the offertory recovery program and increased fixed costs;

Considerations 

Continued modest increase of Sunday Stewardship Offerings will assist to offset operational budget deficit;



Continue to encourage participation in the online giving program to stabilize revenue;



Bequests and Legacy Gifts will continue to provide the parish long-term financial stability;



Continue maintenance projects and equipment repairs to care for facilities and increase operation efficiency.

This year has brought beautiful moments of true faith and hope as we navigated through a global pandemic, while doing our best to provide our young parishioners with their religious education. As in all challenges, there is only one way to get to the other side, and that is through. So we carried on with our program and made adjustments as needed to make it work in this new world of virtual learning and adapted to new way of connecting to one another.

The Summer Intensive Program ran two weeks in July and two weeks in August and looked very different this year. We engaged the children in a live Google Classroom setting. We had 196 students in grades 1 through 6 participate in this new program from the comfort and safety of their homes. Professional Catholic school teachers successfully taught and guided the children through their faith journey. We surveyed the parents at the end of the program, and to our surprise, both the children and parents got so much out of the program, that we will be continuing this new tradition going forward. We adapted, we adjusted, and in the end, it was a great success that will now add to our RE program in the future.

Our online fall program ran as planned through a curriculum titled My Catholic Faith Delivered. 83 students in grades 3 through 6 needed to successfully complete each lesson at their own pace. With all the challenges we were faced with this year, this part of the program was able to run exactly as it had in the past. However, in the midst of revamping the rest of our program, it became clear that this program could use a reboot of sorts as well. In the world of live virtual learning, we know that the students need to be engaged to really learn properly. So at the conclusion of this program, we have decided that going forward, we will change to this new virtual live model that worked so well in our summer intensive session. Sometimes, in difficult moments, it is easier to make changes. Especially when our goal is to catechize these young children so they are ready to go out into the world with faith as their guide.

Our fall on campus RE program for grades 1 and 2 was a great success this year. 29 first and second graders came to the church Tuesday afternoons for in person RE classes. All protocols were followed and strictly implemented all year. We took temperatures of the children upon arrival, we were socially distanced and masks were worn. The parents and catechists felt safe and the children were able to get the benefits of in person learning.

We celebrated First Communion for our previous year of second graders, as we had to re-schedule our April and May 2020 dates. We had 62 children receive their First Holy Communion. We were sure to have two rehearsals to ensure everyone knew what to do and how to make this a wonderful experience for them and their families.

We did not have any First Communions this spring, as it was decided to stick with the October schedule like last year. So this year’s second graders, will make their sacrament of First Communion in October of 2021.

In December 2020, we had 61 second graders attend their very first Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. We were blessed with 10 priests to administer the Sacrament. Adhering to all protocols, even

Religious Education continued in the midst of the ongoing pandemic, we had RECORD numbers of parishioners as well as these second graders and their families who attended. It was a beautiful faith filled moment.

For all of our Religious Education students, there is an Intergenerational component. Each RE student must attend at least four of these programs or events throughout the year. This year we had over a dozen events to choose from and all the events can be broken down into three categories: Community, Liturgical or Service.

Most families were able to make this happen, but with the circumstances of this challenging year, we just asked that the children and families do their best. Keeping the faith that next year, we will be able to have more wonderful opportunities.

As shown here, there were many opportunities to engage the children. Many of the intergenerationals were met with record setting numbers this year. Both the Fall and Spring Clean-ups were extremely successful. As was the Advent Penance and Reconciliation service. This just proves that we want to engage with others and community building is important.

This year has been a tremendous success here at our parish for our Religious Education program. Even through the challenge, with faith, we made it all work. I have spoken to so many RE parents who were so grateful that we still had in person, or were so happy that their child didn’t miss a year and was able to do virtual learning. The silver lining this year, was that if there is a will, there is a way. With faith, all things are possible! We learned some new things along the way, made changes as they were needed, adapted, and had a great Religious Education program to show for it.

Youth & Adult Catechesis

This year presented itself with many challenges of understanding. Amid the many uncertainties of life, Christ remains. And so, we forge ahead in faith that God will provide for us in our need.

In response to the pandemic situation and insufficient number of volunteer catechists, the Fall of 2020 Confirmation prep paradigm, which is comprised of the 7th and 8th grade students of the parish, moved from an entirely in house program to live Google classroom format for entire 7th grade and an in house or live Google classroom option for the 8th grade. We had nine 8th grade students whose families chose to participate in on campus class, where social distancing and mask wearing was required. 128, 7th and 8th grade students chose to attend virtually. We had five brave volunteers who facilitated our online students, four 8th grade groups and one 7th grade group. Taking a page from our summer intensive program, the parish hired two Catholic school teachers to fill the void for the remaining 7th graders.

This year was a lesson in flexibility, understanding, and a lot of faith. Mass requirements were able to be met via the parish YouTube channel when in person attendance wasn’t the best option. Homily reflections were written.

Mini-retreats were scheduled, postponed and eventually moved to a virtual format. We “Spilled the Catholic Tea” using recorded video segments featuring our Pastoral coordinator of worship and music, Andrew Macirowski, Fr. Jeff, and Monsignor Troiano. These videos addressed questions that students presented at the beginning of the school year and were shared in the virtual classroom. 90% of our students attended both the Advent and Lenten Penance and Reconciliation services. Several students partook in the attendance of the May Day crowning.

The Confirmation prep students put their faith into action living out their call to Christian service. 31 students participated in the parish Thanksgiving Food drive, 36 in the Fall parish clean-up, 23 in the Spring clean-up, they helped decorate the Church for Christmas, 28 participated in this year’s Fishers of Men Lenten food drive, and 21 contributed to the parish Soap SACK drive. Additionally, the Confirmation prep group sponsored one ASLAN ministry family and provided Target gift cards for CPC families this Christmas. 15 students and some of their parents helped wrapped Christmas presents and one student ran his own neighborhood toy drive which were dispersed through our Social Outreach and Charitable Appeals.

The youth are not the future of the Church, they are the Church. They are present and forging ahead on their faith journey – even amidst the anxiety of pandemic, the turmoil of life and uncertainty of the future, at the edges of their understanding faith takes over.

Adult Bible Study In the past few years, participants of the Parish of St. Mary have wanted to get the “big picture” of the Bible by focusing on the story that runs throughout Sacred Scripture. The program helps foster:

“Faith begins at the edges of understanding.”

Pandemic times did not isolate us from Christ, nor did it prevent our Bible Study group from pursuing its exploration of the biblical narrative. The historical, cultural, and literacy context was studied both in-person and virtually via Zoom. One morning and one evening group of 14 participants [total] met throughout the year. They look forward to continuing to discover what Scripture reveals about God’s plan and our place within it and invite others in the parish to join and expand their numbers.

Women’s Morning Office Women of the parish gather in weekly for ‘Song, Scripture, Reflection, Eucharist, Sharing, and Prayer’. One group of women meet each Friday morning at 7:30 in the Chapel and another group meets virtual via Zoom on Saturday mornings at 10:00. Approximately 16 woman participate weekly in this faith sharing start of the day.

Men’s Morning Office Men of the parish started meeting again in person in July, though continue meeting online for the Rosary via Zoom on Mondays through December 2020. The group has an active roster of 40 or so men ranging in age from their early 20s to 90+. As of summer 2021 about 20 men are meeting in person every Thursday morning at 7:00 am for a prayer service and

Youth & Adult Catechesis continued then enjoy some coffee, donuts and camaraderie.

Walking WIth Purpose Walking WIth Purpose’s Mission is to help every woman encounter Jesus Christ through Bible Studies. This year women of the parish embarked on year eight of Walking WIth Purpose Programming. This year's program was surely impacted by the pandemic restrictions but persevered offering virtual options for members so that they could continue to share faith with each other and encounter the Lord. FY 2020-2021 was 25 participants strong and offered fall and spring programming in three ways: small groups in homes, in-person when possible and virtually via zoom and at two times, during the day from 10am-11:30 and in the evening from 7:00pm to 8-30. The Fall Program offered was Grounded in Hope, a seventeen-week program which delved into the book of Hebrew exploring ways in which Jesus Christ is our anchor and lifeline. Fifteen participants continued faith sharing in the spring and the summer months meeting to discuss passages from WWP’s Be Still, a 365 Day Devotional. Another group met in the spring to discuss Lisa Brennickmeyer’s book, Seven Priorities to Make Life Work.

Prayer for a Pandemic May we who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake.

May we who have no risk factors remember those most vulnerable.

May we who have the luxury of working from home remember those who must choose between preserving their health or making their rent.

May we who have the flexibility to care for our children when their schools close remember those who have no options.

May we who have to cancel our trips remember those that have no safe place to go.

May we who are losing our margin money in the tumult of the economic market remember those who have no margin at all.

As fear grips our country, let us choose love.

During this time when we cannot physically wrap our arms around each other, let us yet find ways to be the loving embrace of God to our neighbors. Amen.
