Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: Jesus teaches us to share what we have with others. What do you have that you are able to share?

Question for Youth: The Gospel story tells us that we are judged by what we do or don’t do for the poor and needy. How are you currently reaching out to those in need? What more could you do?

Question for Adults: What choices can you or have you made to balance your own life with those who are homeless, poor and in need of assistance for daily living? How does this Gospel reading inform you about that?

Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Chapel in honor of a living or deceased loved one.

One intention is accepted per week (Sunday - Saturday) for the Lamp. The suggested donation is $25. Request online HERE. Available weeks listed below: Chapel - 10/30, 12/11, 12/25

Saint Francis of Assisi is perhaps one of the most well known Catholic saints, being the patron of ecology and animals, with the blessing of animals often taking place on his feast day, the 4th of October. What is less known in popular culture about the Saint is his early life. He was born into a wealthy family, grew up with money, and worked closely with his father as a cloth merchant. He spent money freely, often partied, and what hardly what we might consider a man of God.

When Francis was about 25 years old, he had a conversion of faith after having God speak to him in a dream and hearing the voice of Christ while praying in a derelict chapel in San Damiano (outside of Assisi), renounced his father and his business, and took to living a life a poverty. Francis would preach about penitence, love of neighbor, detachment from worldly possessions, and peace, despite not be ordained. He began to gather followers,

MISSIONARY CO-OP WEEKEND

and they petitioned the local bishop to be recognized as a Christian Order, which was later informally granted by Pope Innocent III; this was the beginnings of the Franciscan Order.Less than one month before his death, Francis was praying during a 40 day retreat, when he had a vision of an angel and received the stigmata, the wounds of FrancisChrist. is known for his love and care for the environment and all of creation, peace among all, and was also the first to erect a Nativity Scene for Christmas, using live animals and a straw filled feeding trough for the infant Jesus, so that worshippers would get a better sense of the humble circumstances through which Christ entered our world. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX just two years after his death. Pope Saint John Paul II later named Saint Francis the patron saint of Ecology.

Saint of the Week:

Wenceslaus, King and Martyr, c. 907 935

Last weekend Fr. Peter James Alindogan, Trenton Diocesan Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the United States, visited our parish on behalf of our mission partners. During the past years, our diocese has shared our resources to needy and developing countries where the life giving presence of Christ in our world is proclaimed and professed. You can still make a donation to support the needs of our Catholic churches in third world countries. Please make checks out to St Mary writing Mission Co-Op in the memo line and drop them in the collection box this weekend. Thank you for your generosity, for being part of our Mission Family and helping spread the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in these developing nations of the world. You can also make your donations electronically HERE Credit cards and bank accounts accepted.

Wenceslaus was born into the royal family of Bohemia (Czech Republic in modern times), and was raised a Christian by his grandmother, St. Ludmilla. At this time, Christianity was not widespread throughout the land; indeed, most of the nobility were very much against it.

In 925, he assumed the throne shortly after the death of his father. Wenceslaus announced that he would support God's law and endeavor to rule with justice and mercy. The severity with which he punished oppression by the nobility as well as the friendly relations which he established with Germany raised bitter opposition. Read more HERE.

Walking With Purpose Fall 2022-2023 Program

Opening Your Heart: The Starting Point

Opening Your Heart: The Starting Point is our foundation Bible study, and we recommend all participants new to Walking with Purpose begin here, regardless of previous experience with Bible study. We encourage everyone to experience Opening Your Heart because we believe this Bible study is an incredibly effective guide to deep, lasting transformation of the heart. Join us as we take a deeper dive into the core questions that we need to wrestle with if we want to experience all that God has for us.

Touching the Divine draws us into a deeper relationship with Jesus as we reflect on Christ’s personality. Knowing Him more intimately will increase our love for Him. St. John referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” As we study, John will teach us how much Christ loves us and how His love is the true satisfaction of our souls. Dates: 6, Anne

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. There is no need to be frightened about eternal life if we daily allow God’s word to guide us in our responses to others. This message parallels what was presented in last Sunday’s gospelthere is an urgency about discipleship. Last Sunday the urgency was depicted in terms of acting prudently; this Sunday the urgency is about listening. In both ways do we prepare for eternal life. God’s word comes to us in more ways than the proclamations at Sunday Mass or taking time to read the Bible as important as both of those are. God’s word also comes to us through others. It can be presented as someone in need. God’s word might come in some challenge to our self centeredness or values. It might come through another’s encouragement. In all these ways and countless others we are invited to listen. Listening is a part of the decisiveness of discipleship.

Last weekend it was uplifting to see so many families at each of the four weekend masses. I greeted many as they were coming or going. I observed a bit of the Confirmation Candidate Retreat Day and have since received favorable feedback from participants. RE Orientation was well attended and we are off to a new Catechetical Year. Many thanks to our RE/FF Staff and all who collaborate with them. We also Welcomed Fr. PJ Alindogan for the Mission Coop program. We will have the receptacles in the Narthex this weekend as well as the drop down for our online givers in order to receive your gift for this important outreach. Our Roman Catholic Church continues to be a global deliverer of charitable goods and services…this can only happen when each of us makes a commitment to get involved. Thank you for your generous support of the foreign missions and our local charitable outreach.

Fall has begun. One of the benefits of living in the Mid-Atlantic States is the opportunity to experience fall weather. Hopefully we will be treated to that glorious transition from Summer into Winter. Take some time to be outside, enjoying a walk or sharing some wine with good friends. As with all things the seasons come and go. Don’t miss out on the beauty of creation God gives us.

Preparations are being made for the Blessing of Animals in observance of the Memorial of Saint Francis of Assisi. Please consult the e bulletin for details. We will once again be hosting the Halloween Halls. Emails have been sent to all those who have set up rooms and provided goodies for our trick or treaters. There is always room for new participants. We ask that you let our staff know in advance so the we might fill all of the available spaces. There are many service projects available for those students who need to log service hours. THANK YOU for your support and cooperation.

Each week I am noticing new faces. Some have come up and introduced themselves others have not. It is so important for us to be a welcoming community. If you notice a new face, introduce yourself. Welcome that person or family to our parish. Our parish can only be as strong as our commitment to see the Face of Christ in the other person. Participating in the Mass each weekend, getting involved in some aspect of parish life and supporting our parish community through our Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure are the core ways in which we are bona fide parishioners.

Do I dare say it…? Ok, why not…Christmas is 3 months from this coming Sunday! Just thought you might like to be reminded. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff vadis

THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX

A MENTOR FOR TODAY’S RESTLESS HEARTS Friday, September 30 9:30 AM 2:00 PM

Thérèse of Lisieux is widely known for her life of simple and practical holiness. Despite her popularity, however, many contemporary people are unfamiliar with her strikingly modern psychological and spiritual insights, and some may be inclined to dismiss her loving life as naïve or immature. They would be missing a treasure! In this retreat, we will look at how Thérèse mentors us on the way to emotional health and spiritual maturity from her own experience of loss, love, addiction and healing. With disarming humor, unsparing honesty and bold confidence, Thérèse teaches us that the merciful God of the Gospel is always on our side. Her Little Way is the path of love, inner freedom, and release from the trap of perfectionism and from the self bullying that lurks beneath the surface of our earnest best efforts. Donation: $35, includes lunch; Zoom $30.

IN PERSON ONLY - CELEBRATE ST. FRANCIS LORD, MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF YOUR PEACE Tuesday, October 4 9:30 AM 1:30 PM

We will have a wonderful celebration of St. Francis! We begin our day by viewing an inspiring film by Bishop Robert Barron on St. Francis. You will feel like you are in Assisi! We will spend some time outdoors, weather permitting, to enjoy the beauty of creation as Francis insists and follow with the celebration of Liturgy in our Portiuncula (outdoor Chapel). Donation: $30, includes lunch.
