Lifelong Catechesis - Week of September 24th to September 30th

READINGS FOR THE WEEK:

24 Sunday: TWENTY-FIFTHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

1 Tm 6:13-16/Lk 8:4-15 (448)

25 Monday: Ezr 1:1-6/Lk 8:16-18 26

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: How do you experience God being generous to you: through your family, friends, school, or parish?

Question for Youth: This Gospel reminds us that God is always seeking us out and welcoming us into his generous love. Through whom has God reached out to you? Who is always encouraging you to say "yes" to God?

Question for Adults: Using Jesus' parable as your starting point, describe in your own words how God will treat those who come to be part of the church, even those who come late.

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Worship & Music

Saint Vincent de Paul

Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org

Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org

He was a French Roman Catholic priest, who dedicated his life to the service of the poor. He was born in 1581, one of 6 children born to poor, peasant farmers. At age 15 he entered the seminary and was ordained at the (even for the time) young age of 19. The customary minimum age for ordination at the time was 24 years old, and when he was appointed as a parish priest in southwestern France, this was appealed in the court of Rome. Rather than face a lawsuit, he resigned from his appointment and continued his studies, earning degrees in Theology and Canon Law.

He was a proponent of Apostolic Life, particularly for women and for those involved in the missionary work of the church, and was a pioneer in clerical training, believing in the good work that those who dedicated their life to God could do. Throughout his life, service to the poor remained at the forefront of his mission.

He was canonized in 1737 by Pope Clement XII. The well-known Society of Saint Vincent de Paul was established in his name in 1833 and exists to serve the poor and needy in 153 countries.

Saint Vincent de Paul is the patron of all charitable causes. His memorial is September 27.

Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist, First Century

Matthew was probably born in Galilee and was a publican tax collector at Capernaum at the time that Jesus called him. While a tax collector was a rich man, he was no more admired in ancient times than an IRS agent is admired today. The fact that Jesus chose a tax collector as a disciple shows us that he was bringing the Good News not just to the Pharisees and other self-righteous Jews, but also to the rejected people of society.

Matthew was one of the twelve Apostles, and the second Gospel is attributed to him. His Gospel was written sometime between the years 60 and 90, most likely in Aramaic. (The historian Papias records in 130 that Matthew wrote the Logia, presumably our Gospel, "in the Hebrew Tongue".) The Gospel which we have now came to us in- Read More HERE.

The crisp Fall air has crept up on us this September, and leaves are beginning to coat the grounds... Which means we will be joining together soon in fellowship for our Fall-Clean Up on Saturday, November 18! Clean up will begin at 9:00 AM and go on until 1:00 PM Those attending will meet on the campus grounds.

Don’t forget to sign-up HERE!

Also, October 1, 2023 at the 9:00 AM Mass, Saint Dominic Parish in Brick, NJ will be dedicating their shrine to the Blessed Carlo Acutis who Bishop O’Conell named “Diocesan Patron of Youth, especially those in Catholic Schools and Religious Education Programs.”

The 9:00 AM Mass will be in celebration of Carlo and his encounters with the Lord in the Eucharist. Carlo is greatly known for developing a website catalogue of all Eucharist miracles throughout history as a teenager, before his passing.

Quo vadis for September 24. . .

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Whenever we think of God’s “call” we usually think of it in terms of conversion, baptism, religious life, priesthood, diaconate. These are surely big religious moments. This gospel, however, invites us to hear God’s call in the everyday fidelity of discipleship. Marriage fidelity is hearing and answering God’s call. As obeying parents, getting the best grades in school one can 9with the talent one has been given0, growing in good habits and having Christian virtue is hearing and answering God’s call. Responding to the needs of others is hearing and answering God’s call. Living the gospel is hearing and answering God’s call. In these and countless other ways, each time we die to self for the sake of another we are answering God’s call to discipleship. In all of this our focus is on God and others, not ourselves.

Fall is now upon us. The warm days and cool evenings; the harvesting of crops; the burst of color as the leaves begin to drop; shorter days and longer evenings set a tone of preparation for the stillness of winter. Fall begins a period of preparing our homes on the outside by tending to the trees and gardens and on the inside by readying for the upcoming feasts and holidays. There is the same preparation needed here on the campus of our parish. Also, a preparation for the many fall festivities hosted by businesses all along route 34. Please plan accordingly.

It was nice to have Father Victor with us for a few days last week. He enjoys visiting us and we enjoy having him here. He also spent some time visiting with his sister, Mary, who lives near Belmar.

Preparations are underway for First Communions and Confirmation this October. We will also welcome families who have experienced the death of a loved one in the past year for the Annual Mass of Remembrance. Preparations are underway for the Halloween Halls, Fall Clean-up of our grounds,

Thanksgiving Food Drive, Advent Tree of Love, Sponsor a Family Programs and the return of the Advent Pancake Breakfast. There are lots of opportunities for service projects and for adults to get involved…so, don’tbe shy.

We have upgraded the method for requesting/offering mass intentions on-line. Simply go to the parish website and follow the prompts. What’s new is that you may select the day, date and time for the mass intention. It is our hope that this will provide further convenience for you. We have noticed that former parishioners and children of former parishioners are using this to remain connected to our parish as we pray for those who have gone before us.

Church Lighting Project…well, it seems as if our supplier has been less than forthright with us these many weeks. We were told 4 weeks for the pendant fixtures and 10-12 for the others. We allowed 6 weeks for the pendants…it is now 9 weeks!!! We missed our window for installation. The next window for installation will be early November. I’ll keep you posted along the way. Welcome to the post-pandemic world where a persons word has become less credible in these matters.

Thank you for your prayers for our bishop and priests during the recent convocation. It is good for us to come together periodically for prayer and camaraderie. Continue to pray for priests and vocations to the priesthood.

Work continues in the preparation of the 2022 Stewardship Report. I am grateful to all those who assist in gathering the data and presenting it to us so that we may become better informed stewards of our parish.

Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace.
