Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

15 Thursday:

An altar server is a person who assists the clergy during the celebration of a liturgy. Their role can be traced back to the third century. The roles of an altar server include:

Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org

Cross bearer: one who carries the processional crucifix during the procession, recession, and sometimes during the presentation of the offering from the faithful.

Sometimes the term “server” is confused with “acolyte”. In the Roman Catholic church, the latter term refers to an instituted acolyte, a male who is preparing for the diaconate (and possibly later the priesthood) and is authorized to prepare, purify and arrange the sacred vessels after the distribution of Holy Communion. In other Christian denominations, the term “acolyte” is synonymous with “attendant” and they carry out similar duties as Catholic altar servers.

Do you have children interested in becoming an altar server? Be sure to attend the RE orientation next weekend and sign up!

When a bishop celebrates Mass, 2 altar servers, wearing either white gloves or vimpas (a liturgical garment, similar to a shawl, worn over the shoulders, with pockets for the hands) will hold the miter and crosier for the bishop, and present them to him at appropriate times.

Altar servers fulfill many important duties at Mass, and, at some solemnities, as many as 6 or more are necessary to completely realize the fully dignified potential of those celebrations. At most other liturgical celebrations, 2 servers will often suffice.

A follower of St. John the Evangelist, Polycarp was one of the second generation of Church leaders known as Apostolic Fathers. As the bishop of Smyrna (modern day Izmir, Turkey), Polycarp was the acknowledged leader of the Eastern Church. He traveled to Rome to meet with Pope Anicetus for discussion of certain issues. Among these was the timing of Easter which the eastern and western Churches differed on. Neither was able to persuade the other on this point, but they concluded that each should follow their own custom. Despite this disagreement, the pope, to signify his respect, asked Polycarp to celebrate the Eucharist in his own papal church. Read more HERE.

Thurifer: one who carries the thurible containing the lit charcoal and boat containing the incense. They carry this during the procession and recession, and assist the priest or deacon any time the use of incense is prescribed during Mass.

Any of the above duties are also performed in liturgical processions of any kind, such as a eucharistic procession, stations of the cross, etc.

www.stmaryscoltsneck.org September 11, 2022 4

Polycarp, Bishop and Martyr, c. 69 155

Candle bearers: usually two persons, they carry processional candlesticks during the procession and recession, and accompany the procession of the book of gospels.

Altar Servers

Andrew J. Macirowski - Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music Principal Organist

Saint of the Week:

Altar servers will also ring the Sanctus bells at the epiclesis and elevation, assist the clergy in preparing the altar prior to the Liturgy of the Eucharist, and hold any liturgical books for the priest during the liturgy.

Parish Office Dates and Times for receiving of requests:

Sunday, September 26, 2021 from 9-12 noon

This year requests can be made via paper or online. Online requests will open on the 25th.

Opening Your Heart: The Starting Point is our foundation Bible study, and we recommend all participants new to Walking with Purpose begin here, regardless of previous experience with Bible study. We encourage everyone to experience Opening Your Heart because we believe this Bible study is an incredibly effective guide to deep, lasting transformation of the heart. Join us as we take a deeper dive into the core questions that we need to wrestle with if we want to experience all that God has for us. Touching the Divine draws us into a deeper relationship with Jesus as we reflect on Christ’s personality. Knowing Him more intimately will increase our love for Him. St. John referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” As we study, John will teach us how much Christ loves us and how His love is the true satisfaction of our souls.

The 2023 Mass Intention Book will open on Sunday, September 25, 2022 for date specific Mass Intentions within the 2023 year.

Requests will be time stamped when received to provide order of entry into the new year book.

Today we celebrate the Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. If God is so compassionate and loving with us, then as faithful disciples of Jesus we must risk being so compassionate and loving with others. First of all, this means that we don’t judge whether the other is worth our compassion and love. God shows us that all are even outcasts and sinners. Second, we don’t earn compassion and love. Since it is a free gift of God to us, it is a gift we freely give to others. We don’t wait until someone wrongs us to show compassion and love-we offer these gifts simply because the other is a beloved of God. It’s much easier for us to be compassionate and loving when the end situation is better for us. For example, we might forgive a family member some wrong doing because we want peace in the family. It is far more risky to be compassionate when there is no immediate gain for us in sight. As disciples we are called to be compassionate simply because this is the way Jesus was. Living the paschal mystery means that we feast well and often because we realize that God “hugs” us with compassion and love without calculating whether we deserve it or not. This weekend we remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. This day forever changed many Americans and certainly changed our sense of security. It also rallied national pride and a determination to help make our country and the world a better place. There was a return to churches and an unprecedented atmosphere of caring and concern. Acknowledgement of God soared and our dependency on God helped to sort through a mix of emotions. We continue to remember those whose lives were ended and their survivors. Let us continue to trust in God’s providential care for us as we remember that day. Next weekend we welcome parents and children participating in our Parish Religious Education Fall Program. During the summer months we offer two modules. During the Fall, Winter & Spring months we offer Confirmation Preparation for grades 7&8; online learning for grades 3, 4, 5, 6; and on-campus classes for grades 1 and 2. With our grade 2 receiving the sacrament of First Penance and grade 3 receiving First Holy Communion. We offer many options to assist families share our Catholic Faith with their children. We continue to offer inter generational opportunities throughout the year. All of this is predicated upon regular participation in Sunday Mass. Learning about our Catholic Faith without participating in Sunday Mass, the most important part of our Catholic Identity, sends mixed messages especially to the children. It is my hope that our parish will continue to offer the very best so that families will want to participate in Sunday Eucharist and all that our parish has to offer.

My Dear Parishioners:

Next weekend we will welcome Father PJ Alindogan, Diocesan Director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. This is the annual Mission Cooperative that is scheduled each year. Please come prepared to support the Foreign Mission Outreach of our Catholic Church. Have a great week. Let us pray for one another. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff Quo vadis . . .
