Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Andrew J. Macirowski - Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org Worship & Music
served as Pope from 590-604, and his memorial is celebrated on September 3. He is the patron saint of musicians, especially singers, as well as students and teachers. Although his tenure was short, he is noted for multiple accomplishments:
• Emphasized missionary work in Great Britain
• Frequently gave alms to the poor, and suggested that each church have a deacon who would be ordained for the purpose of service to the poor and needy
• Fed the hungry during a Roman famine in the mid-590s, using the farming assets of the Church of Rome.
• Heavily involved in the liturgy of the Church, he began to establish the collecting of chants used throughout the various regions and constructed the standard for which specific chants would be used for specific services. Although the specific way of notating this music would come centuries later, the term Gregorian Chant is attributed to him and remains the official musical form of the Roman Catholic Church to this day. The style of Gregorian Chant is the model for modern styles of chant as well, with flowing and melismatic musical lines. Single-line chant was the precursor to counterpoint, which lead to polyphony, which led to the music of the baroque and classical eras and beyond. Therefore, not only sacred music, but almost all modern music can trace it roots back to Pope Gregory’s insistence on codifying musical practice and form.
Augustine, Bishop and Doctor, 354-430
Augustine was the eldest son of St. Monica and Patricius, a pagan Roman official. As a young man, he studied at the university at Carthage with the intent of becoming a lawyer, but gave up law to devote himself to literary pursuits. Along the way, he abandoned his Christian faith.
For about fifteen years, Augustine adopted the Manichean heresy. The Manichaens believed that evil was caused by an outside force, thus, people were relieved of guilt for their sins. Augustine lived with a mistress who bore him a son. He studied and taught rhetoric at Tagaste, Carthage, Rome, and Milan.
In Milan, Augustine was impressed by the sermons of St. Ambrose, the bishop of the city. His influence, as well as the prayers of his mother, brought him back to Christianity and he was baptized by Ambrose at the Easter Vigil in 387.

The Martha Mary Guild cordially invites all women of the parish and Cohort parishes to attend the first meeting of our new year on Wed., Sept. 11. We will pray the Rosary in the old chapel of the Spiritual Center at 11:30 a.m., followed by BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) at noon, with refreshments and dessert supplied by the Guild. Our speaker, is Mark Cartier, who we enjoyed so much a few years ago, that we invited him back. He and his wife, Stephanie are the owners of No Limits Cafe on Rte. 35 in Red Bank. This is a very special restaurant that hires people with intellectual disabilities and they do a wonderful job. Mark will describe how the restaurant was started and what it's like operating such an establishment. His story is heartwarming, and, speaking from experience, their food is delicious! Come and hear about it and I guarantee you will be going there for lunch soon!!
Men, women, teens and preteens - the Martha Mary Guild would appreciate your help in sorting clothes for the Big September Sale. (Yes, men help too and are especially needed for setting up and breaking down the racks.)
At 1 p.m. on Fri. August 16, we will be setting up in Madonna Hall (in the Spiritual Center). For two weeks starting on August 20, we will be in Madonna Hall every week day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to sort clothing. No skills are needed and no "sign-up" is necessary for Set-up - JUST COME!!
We will be accepting donations of clean, gently used clothing from Aug. 17 through Sept. 1 - and just a reminder - the Sale will be Sept. 5,6,7 & 8. Your help is so very much needed and you can sign up HERE

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. It’s easier to clean the pots and pans than to clean one’s heart! It’s also easy to dismiss this gospel because our tradition has never emphasized this kind of ritual impurity. Yet, the gospel hits home closer than we may think. What traditions do we blindly cling to? Perhaps it is enough for us just to go to Mass on Sunday; after all, this is what most of us grew up doing. Or perhaps we cling to rote prayers that we learned as a child rather than stretch our relationship with God to find new prayer expressions. Perhaps we relegate God in our lives to an hour on Sunday. We need to look at the way we live, and this will tell us whether we have hearts truly turned toward God—all the time. Purity of heart is expressed in righteous living self-giving for the sake of others. This is how we have life.
His Holiness, Pope Francis has declared 1 September as a day for us to remember the gifts of creation, especially the earth and all that the earth offers to sustain our everyday living. Building upon the landmark encyclical Laudato si, the Holy Father invites us to pray in a special way for a greater awareness of all creation, human life and the environment in which we live. This call is not one of political or social correctness, but rather one of a moral imperative recognizing that God has set humankind over creation. Therefore, we have a moral obligation to respect all that has been created and work for greater respect of all creation. Some of the practical ways we are striving to become more environmentally conscious here at our parish campus has been: reduced flow fixtures in our restrooms; motion sensor lighting controls; programmable internet hosted thermostats; scheduling activities in space appropriate locations; replacing existing light fixtures with energy efficient LED fixtures; retrofitting older HVAC
units with economizers for fresh air intake; caring for / replacing / managing plantings throughout our campus; install of water fountain with bottle refill component; the installation of the solar farm along the north east boundary of the property. May our deliberate respect for God’s many gifts found in the created order inspire others to work for just environmental policies.
This weekend we observe the Civic Holiday recognizing the dignity of Human Labor. We will observe the abbreviated mass schedule: Saturday 5:00pm & Sunday 10:00am. Let us remember all those who labor for the common good. Let us also pray for a continued increase in the working conditions for all laborers. The parish office will be closed on Monday and mass will be celebrated at 9:00am in the chapel.
This might be a good time for me to reiterate the importance of parents accompanying their children to mass each Sunday and for Holy Days; dressing appropriately, arriving on time, remaining until the final blessing are all ways that we witness to the importance of Sunday Eucharist in the life of every Catholic.
For those who have not participated in the 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal, please do so as soon as possible. For those who have already participated, THANK YOU! A par ish is the responsibility of all involved and not simply a few people. Together let us discern how God is calling us to build the Church in our midst and throughout our Diocese of Trenton. May our Stewardship of Time, Talent & Treasure continue to make the Church vibrant in our time. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.
Happy Sunday. Peace. F. Jeff
