October is the month of the Holy Rosary

The earliest known precursor to the Rosary were knotted prayer ropes, used by early Christians, but the practice also has pre-Christianic roots. The concept of the Rosary as we know it today is thought to have to come to Saint Dominic in the 13th century, through an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The practice of praying of the Rosary by laity was an early parallel to the praying of the liturgy of the hours by clergy.

The structure of the prayers developed into its modern form during the next 3 centuries, which included the placement of the Invitatory prayer, Lord’s prayer,Apostles Creed, Hail Mary, Salve Regina, Doxology, et cetera, and remained relatively unchanged until the last century. Another development during this time period was the recitation and mediation on the Mysteries of the Rosary: Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious, by St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, a French priest living in the 17th century. There are 5 mysteries per category, each prayed for one decade of the Rosary

In the early-mid 20th century, it became common, especially in group devotional prayer, to add one of the Fatima prayers along with the Doxology. In 2002, Pope Saint John Paul II added another group of mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries.

There are several ways to pray the Rosary, with many prescriptions including the time of year, time of day, or how many decades, or which mysteries should be meditated upon, with the simplest being a single decade using a rosary ring or rosary bracelet, often suggested for children first learning about the Rosary, (thus completing one full Rosary over the course of a week), to four full recitations including each mystery, more common on devotional days such as Divine Mercy Sunday (2nd Sunday of Easter), Our Lady of Fatima (May 13), our Lady of the Rosary (October 7) and other Marian feasts.

Marie Rose Durocher, Religious, 1811-1949

Eulalie Durocher was born in St. Antoine, Quebec, on October 6, 1811, the tenth of eleven children. While little is known of her early life, it can be assumed from what she accomplished in her relatively short lifetime that she received an excellent education.

When she was sixteen, Eulalie felt a calling to a religious life, but her frail health caused her to be turned away by religious orders. About two years later, when Eulalie was eighteen, her mother died. Read More HERE.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. The Rite of Confirmation

The Bishop and/or the priest who administers the Sacrament lay their hands upon those who are to be confirmed. It is here that the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit are received… “ the effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Sprit as once granted to the apostles on the day of the Pentecost” Last week we discussed gifts 1, 2 and 3, here are 4 &5:

4 & 5 of the Seven Gifts

Fortitude/Courage sustains our decision to follow the will of God in any situation. It allows us to stand up and defend our faith, even when threatened by bodily injury or death. This gift allows us to be steadfast in our decisions to do well and to endure evil even when we do not want to.

Knowledge is awareness of God’s plan. It is not simply an accumulation of facts but rather an understanding of God’s purpose and how we ought to respond. Knowledge helps bring to light temptations and to discern whether to give in or live a life worthy of God’s approval.

My Dear Parishioners:

Quo vadis...

Today we celebrate the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. God’s design for all of creation is that it be harmonious and whole. Paradoxically, it’s the rhythm of the paschal mystery between dying and rising—that keeps us harmonious and whole. Dying to self means that our own selfish interests are not put ahead of the good of another—which promotes harmony. The new life that always comes from self-giving is a sign of wholeness. Always what stands in the way of harmony and wholeness is hardness of heart—our own or another’s. The challenge is in the example of Jesus: embrace and bless even the little ones.

Last week I was reviewing the Annual Report published by the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Chestnut Hill PA. Sister Helen Clifton, who served many years in our parish community, is celebrating 75 Years of Religious Profession. I am sure Sister Helen would enjoy hearing from those who know her. Let us pray for all those religious women who faithfully serve our Roman Catholic Church.

October 7th is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Many in our parish community have a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under this title. Let us continue to invoke the intercession of the Blessed Mother by praying the Rosary for World Peace, Healing and Reconciliation and greater tolerance of diversity. During the month of October we pray for a greater awareness of the need to Respect Life at every stage from Conception to Natural Death. This October take some time to familiarize yourself with the vast teachings

of our church. This might be a good time for you to consider making out a “living will” or “advance directives” for healthcare. It is necessary for you and for your survivors to know and clearly understand your intentions. Please be responsible.

October is also the month when we as Christians focus on Stewardship: Sharing Our Time, Talent & Treasure. Take some time to reflect on how we are called to be better stewards of the time, talent and blessings God has given to us. Take time connect your faith life to the many details of daily living as a Catholic Christian. I expect that you, all of our registered parishioners, will receive an electronic copy of our Parish Stewardship Newsletter in the coming weeks. It will also be posted to our website. This is the fruit of many hours of work by our staff and leadership teams. This report is not an extra. Every parishioner has a right to know the details contained in this report. It is a way in which the staff renders an accountable statement to you our parishioners, benefactors and friends as stakeholders. Do not hesitate to ask our Parish Trustees or staff members for clarification of questions that might arise. Transparent administration is something that you should expect and that we strive to sustain.

Let us continue to pray for our candidates for First Holy Communion and Confirmation, their parents, god parents and sponsors. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
