October is the month of the Holy Rosary The earliest known precursor to the Rosary were knotted prayer ropes, used by early Christians, but the practice also has pre-Christianic roots. The concept of the Rosary as we know today is thought to have to come to Saint Dominic in the 13th century, through an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The praying of the Rosary by laity is a parallel to the praying of the liturgy of the hours by clergy.

The structure of the prayers developed into its modern form during the next 3 centuries, which included the placement of the Invitatory prayer, Lord’s prayer, Apostles Creed, Hail Mary, Salve Regina, Doxology, et cetera, and remained relatively unchanged until the last century. Another development during this time period was the recitation and mediation on the Mysteries of the Rosary: Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious, by St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, a French priest living in the 17th century. There are 5 mysteries per category, each prayed for one decade of the Rosary.

In the early-mid 20th century, it became common, especially in group devotional prayer, to add one of the Fatima prayers along with the Doxology. In 2002, Pope Saint John Paul II added another group of mysteries, the Luminous Mysteries.

There are several ways to pray the Rosary, with many prescriptions including the time of year, time of day, or how many decades, or which mysteries should be meditated upon, with the simplest being a single decade using a rosary ring or rosary bracelet, often suggested for children first learning about the Rosary, (thus completing one full Rosary over the course of a week), to four full recitations including each mystery, more common on devotional days such as Divine Mercy Sunday (2nd Sunday of Easter), Our Lady of Fatima (May 13), our Lady of the Rosary (October 7) and other Marian feasts.

ALL SOULS By the request of some parishioners, we are including an All Souls envelope in our quarterly package. It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection basket anytime beginning October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. Fall/Winter Mass Schedule Begins: The Saturday night 5 pm Mass moves to 4 pm starting Saturday, October 3rd, 2020. Penance and Reconciliation will move to 3 pm Saturday. (this schedule will run through Palm Sunday Weekend).

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings;

A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/ Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see page 4 Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE will be October 31 On Saturday, October 31, 2020, at the 4 pm Mass, our parish will remember in a special way those who have died at Saint Mary during the past year as well any relative you may wish to remember. This Mass is an opportunity for us to assist those who grieve the death of a loved one.

If you wish the name of a loved one who has died during this past year read out at this Mass, please complete the form below and submit it to the office.

You are then asked to come to the table in the Gathering Space that evening 3:30 pm to receive a candle to be brought to the altar when the name is called.

The 2021 Mass Intention Book will open on Sunday, October 11 for date specific Mass Intentions within the 2021 year.

This year requests can be made via paper or online.

Requests will be time stamped when received to provide order of entry into the new book.

Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum are not available for intentions. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the Mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a Mass intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark. Stipend can be paid by cash, check, or credit card.

Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled and you will be asked to choose another date.

After initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multi-intention form, on line, or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a first-come first served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so.

First Communion Families, First Communion has been rescheduled for Sunday, October 18th and Sunday, October 25th at the 10 am and 12 pm noon Masses.

Now that the church office is open please feel free to pick up your banner kit if you haven't already done so. You and your child can decorate the banner and bring it in the day of their Communion to display in church. Don't forget to take it home with you as a keep sake at the conclusion of Mass.

If possible, the sponsor should be present for the practice. However, a parent can stand in for the sponsor.

Confirmation is Friday, October 23, 4:00 pm (Arrival time is EARLIER) Due to restrictions on the number of people allowed in our Church at one time, attendance will be limited to the candidate, his/her sponsor, and you, the parents.

We will have a professional photographer present. As we have done in past years, the candidates will gather in Madonna Hall beginning at 3 pm, while the parents and sponsors find their assigned seating in the Church. We intend to have a group photo taken in Madonna Hall with the candidates very briefly removing their masks for the photo.

During the Rite of Confirmation the celabrant and the priests who are administering the sacrament lay their hands upon those who are to be confirmed. It is here that the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit are received ...“ the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.”

First Three of the Seven Gifts Wisdom is our ability to value spiritual things over worldly ones. It enables us to desire the things of God and correctly order the things in our life. This gift helps us view the world through God’s perspective and the light of our faith. It instills a desire to contemplate the things of God. Understanding helps us grasp the truths of the faith more easily and profoundly. Our human intellect cannot grasp all of God’s mysteries, but through the gift of understanding we can be led to truth, even when we do not fully comprehend. This gift strengthens our insight through prayer, scripture, and the sacraments.

Counsel/ Right Judgment acknowledges the difference between right and wrong and bestows proper judgment. A person with right judgment avoids sin and leads a life for Christ. Counsel inspires us to speak up and encourage others to do the correct thing. It bestows upon us prudence, allowing us to act promptly and rightly in the face of difficult situations.

Prayer for the Confirmandi Pray that our Confirmation candidates ready themselves for the strength of the Spirit, the power of Prayer and the force of Faith.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time.

These parables of the kingdom in Matthew may sound like a broken phonograph record because they all in one way or another keep saying to us that we must keep our focus on God, lose ourselves, die to ourselves. The repetition gives us the clue that this is absolutely central to remaining in God’s love—self-surrender. We live the paschal mystery by daily practicing a self -surrendering way of life. This is faithful discipleship and the only way we produce good fruit—the only way we receive eternal life.

This coming Sunday we will bless animals/pets at 9:00 am. Please come to the front plaza of the church with your pet. The rite of blessing is not lengthy. This is a custom that has been part of the Franciscan Spirituality. May we continue to reverence all of God’s Creation.

Preparations are underway for the Sacrament of Confirmation as I pen this note.

His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton, will come to our parish Friday, 23 October 2020 to administer the Sacrament.

This year participation is restricted to the candidates, the sponsors and the parents of the candidates. We will observe the protocols that have been in place during the pandemic. Let us continue to pray for these young women and men, their sponsors, their parents, and all those responsible for their religious formation and education.

Last weekend someone, without permission, was distributing unauthorized materials regarding the upcoming election. Should you notice this in the coming weeks, I ask that you respectfully ask them to stop this disrespectful activity. The Catholic Church has published materials regarding how Roman Catholics might understand the issues of our time. We do not endorse individual candidates or political parties.

Our role is to assist in the selection of the best person to represent the issues. (Recognizing that there is not a perfect candidate for all of the issues.) Thank you for taking the time to approach the upcoming election with the seriousness it deserves.

As we enter this beautiful Fall season let us make some time to enjoy the outdoors before the cold weather sets in for a few months. Take time to enjoy the colors which nature bursts forth.

During this month, let us take some time to pray the rosary for world peace, for vocations to the priesthood, for a greater respect for the dignity of all human life. Let us re-commit ourselves to a life of stewardship so that our choices might continue to build up and offer people hope rather than tear down or manipulate. The life that God gives us needs to be used to further build God’s Kingdom in our midst. Let us not only talk about the sanctity of human life let us direct our efforts in support of human life at every stage. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday.
