Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Worship & Music

All Hallow’s Eve

Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org

Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org

The vigil ofAll Saints’Day,All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween, has its roots in the older Christian traditions of holding vigils on the evening prior to a Holy Day in the Church. After a vigil service, worshipers would visit a cemetery and light candles or lay flowers in anticipation of the coming days. In some cultures, there was a belief that on this evening, the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was weak, and people would don masks and costumes so that a departed soul would not recognize them, hence the beginnings of trick-or-treating.

All Saints’Day

The Solemnity ofAll Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation, is the day when the church celebrates all the Saints and Martyrs, including those unknown, and honors the Church Triumphant (saints and others who have entered the Kingdom of Heaven). It is a day that reminds us of our eternal reward, and of the Saints who have lived (and sometimes given) their lives in service of the Church.

The Commemoration ofAll the Faithful Departed

Commonly known asAll Souls’Day, The Commemoration ofAll the Faithful Departed is a Roman Catholic feast, in which the living faithful pray for the faithful departed who have not yet attained their heavenly reward, as their souls are purified in purgatory. Masses held on this day are in memory of all those who have died (hence the name, ALL Souls), and it is customary to visit the graves of loved ones following Mass, and to pray for the happy repose of their souls. Some worship communities have prayer services at cemeteries as well, with graveside blessings. Others choose to remember, in a special way, those who have specifically died within the past year.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, Religious, 1910-1997

Our saint this week provides an excellent example of obedience to Jesus’ command: “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu was born in Skopje, Macedonia, on August 27, 1910. As a young girl, Agnes developed the desire to serve God as a missionary. The desire was strengthened at age twelve when a Jesuit missionary visited her classroom and spoke of his ministry to the people of India. This inspiration led to her joining the Sisters of Loreto when she reached the age of eighteen. The sisters, an Irish community that had schools in India, sent Agnes to one of these communities soon after she joined. When the young lady took her initial vows, she chose the name of Teresa after Thérèse of Lisieux, a saint that she greatly admired. Upon taking her final vows in 1937, she became Mother Teresa.

My Dear Parishioners:

Quo vadis...

Today we celebrate the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Without persistence in prayer it will be impossible for us to follow Jesus faithfully on the road of selfgiving. The encounter with Jesus in prayer keeps healthy and strong our relationship to him. The prayer of petition reminds us that disciples can do nothing on their own without Jesus’ help. Only with Jesus will we disciples not stumble (see first reading). The paschal mystery rhythm of dying and rising plays itself out in many ways this Sunday in a rhythm of ministry and prayer. In practical, everyday terms this means that at times we are doing our faith reaching out to those around us in need; at other times we are being our faith taking time to let our God be present to us in prayer.

Thanks to all those who sacrificially support the Annual World Mission Sunday Collection. These resources are used to continue the mission of the Church to evangelize every corner of the earth. Our participation continues to show forth the true universality of the Catholic Church. We send our gifts to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

We have concluded our celebrations of First Holy Communion for 2024. It is a beautiful time to be with these children and their families. The Sacrament if Confirmation was conferred. These teens are now full members of our Catholic Church. I hope that they are courageous enough to take their place and get involved. A special thanks to Rose Farrow who completes her tenure with our RE Sacramental Program. She has been instrumental in helping us to offer the very best after a number of years of instability. Rose continues on our staff overseeing OCIA, Adult Faith Formation and Pastoral Care here and at Saint Catherine, Holmdel. Thanks also to our Parish Catechetical Leader Julia Cullen, her team and all of our catechists.

This weekend we welcome children and their families to the Saturday 4:00pm mass for the Annual Halloween Halls. Sunday we welcome those families who have buried a loved one during the past 12 months. Our prayerful support is a source of consolation for these families. Consult the electronic bulletin for more particulars. Our parish Lazarus Ministry will welcome family members who buried a loved one from our parish. This is a very important ministry for us and it is

the responsibility of all to bury the dead. Thank you for all of your support for this important ministry. They are very effective in ministering to those who experience the death of a loved one. We also thank those who help to facilitate bereavement ministry in our parish. Walking with those who have experienced the death of a loved one as they courageously continue their discipleship journey.

Next week we begin the month of November…the month of All Saints and All Souls. This is an important part of our Christian Spirituality. Each of us is called to holiness. Each of us struggles with our personal sinfulness. Let us journey through this month with a renewed sense of what it means for us to be a part of the Communion of Saints. Through the intercession of the saints may we continue to model our faith to those around us at home and in the workplace. Let us ever be mindful of the need to pray for the repose of the souls of those who have gone before us. This is a daily reminder that life is a gift and we are merely stewards; therefore, let us make the most of each and every day. Our Parish Book of Remembrance will be displayed so that we might pray for those who died in the past year. The Paschal Candle will be lit throughout the month to serve as a reminder that Christ is our light. The Solemnity of All Saints is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass Schedule here at Saint Mary and at Saint Catherine has been prepared for your convenience. Make time to come to honor the saints and pray for the saints of our time.

It is my hope that most of you will soon receive our 2024 Annual Parish Stewardship Report. This report is being sent to all our parishioners electronically. Many thanks to Edwin Sevillano and all those staff members and parishioners who have made this publication possible. Please take time to read it carefully and become better informed parishioners and stakeholders in the mission of our parish. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
