Saints Simon and Jude, apostles This week we celebrate the Feast of Saints Simon and Jude: ordinary men who were chosen by Jesus himself to teach others about God’s love and to “make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Their lives help us to understand that even the most average people can become saints when they decide to follow Jesus.

Both of these men were known by other names during their lives. Simon was often called “the Zealot.”

A zealot is a person who is strongly committed to something. In Simon’s case, he firmly believed in the importance of people following Jewish law. Once he met Jesus, his life was changed and he became convinced that the most important thing was to follow Jesus and his teachings. We believe that another reason Simon had a nickname was to keep people from confusing him with the other apostle named Simon, the one Jesus called Peter.

Jude was also known as “Jude Thaddeus.” People used this formal title so that he was not confused with Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus and handed him over to be arrested. Jude is the patron saint of hopeless cases and desperate situations. People often pray to Jude when they feel that there is no one else to turn to. They ask Jude to bring their problem to Jesus. Because Jude had such great faith, we know that nothing is impossible for those who believe in the Lord.

Simon and Jude traveled together to teach others about Jesus. Because of their eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ miracles and his death and Resurrection, many people became believers and were baptized. Simon and Jude died for their faith on the same day in Beirut. Jude’s body was later returned to Rome where it was buried in a crypt under St. Peter’s Basilica.

It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection basket anytime beginning October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November.

EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings;

A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/ Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see page 4 Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE will be October 31 On Saturday, October 31, 2020, at the 4 pm Mass, our parish will remember in a special way those who have died at the Parish of Saint Mary during the past year as well asany relative you may wish to remember. This Mass is an opportunity for us to assist those who grieve the death of a loved one.

Every year, Saint Mary Parish parishioners generously provide donations for Thanksgiving Baskets for over 200 area families who are in need in the Monmouth County area.

The Parish of Saint Mary provides turkeys along with the non-perishable food. Due to lack of freezer space we ask for monetary donations towards the purchase of turkeys. Therefore, in lieu of donating turkeys or gift cards, please make your check payable to “The Parish of Saint Mary” & put ‘Thanksgiving Food Drive’ in the memo section.

Your contribution will be used for turkeys or additional canned goods if needed.

Help us exceed last year's donations of 227 bags of groceries and 160 turkeys to greater serve the needs of the community at large.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Most of us don’t have difficulty loving those we know and care about. The first reading directs our love even toward the neighbor we don’t know.

In our present society this is perhaps not only challenging but sometimes it is also very risky. In a crime-laden society such as ours we tend not to trust the stranger—the one we meet on the street or the one who might come to our door.

On the one hand, we must be careful and protect ourselves and our loved ones. On the other hand, we must be genuinely sensitive to others’ needs. If someone comes to our door and needs to use the phone, we can offer to make the call for them; if we see something happening that is wrong, we can take responsibility and call the police or other agency; we can do something so simple as hold a store door open for someone who is package-laden.

Yes, actions speak louder than words!

Congratulations to our First Communicants and their families. Both Masses were prayerful and the children looked great…masks and all. We are preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation this coming Friday. We will once again host families presenting their children for their first holy communion this

coming weekend. I am grateful to our staff for their great care in preparing these families. Our parishioners have been great in assisting us be helping to clean the pews and chairs in between each Mass. We do have a cleaning service who mop the floors and clean the bathrooms as well.

Preparations are well underway for the distribution of our Annual Stewardship Report for the Calendar Year 2019 & the Fiscal Year 1 July 2019 – 30 June 2020.

It will be available on our website. It will be e-mailed to all of our registered parishioners in order that we continue to be accountable to you as parishioners and stakeholders. While it can seem a bit overwhelming, I encourage you to read through it to learn more about our parish. Surely, oversight of finances is important; however, how the financial resources are used to further the mission of the church is equally important. Thank you for your continued support of our parish.

As the leaves change color we are reminded that our liturgical year is quickly coming to a close. Take some time to enjoy the Fall weather. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
