Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:
Question for Children: Jesus teaches us to be humble but what does that mean? How do you show you are humble?
Question for Youth: God knows when we are doing things just for show, and when they come from the goodness of our heart. When have you caught yourself doing something just to be more popular or liked? How does it feel to do something that you know is good and just?
Question for Adults: This Gospel reading suggests that we approach God and each other with humility. What does this mean, in practical terms? How do we "humble" ourselves? What does that mean?

Worship & Music
Andrew J. Macirowski - Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org
“How is the music for the Mass chosen?” AtTheParishof Saint Mary, the answers to this question vary depending upon the day and season. We can, however, break it down into a feweasily digestible parts.
The first place that is looked at for the choosing of music is the Roman Missal. Here, the antiphons for the day are prescribed. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal: In the Dioceses of the United States of America, there are four options for the Entrance Chant:
1) the antiphon from the Missal or the antiphon with its Psalm from the Graduale Romanum, as set to music there or in another setting;
(2) the antiphon and Psalm of the Graduale Simplex for the liturgical time;
(3) a chant from another collection of Psalms and antiphons, approved by the Conference of Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop, including Psalms arranged in responsorial or metrical forms;
(4) another liturgical chant that is suited to the sacred action, the day, or the time of year, similarly approved by the Conferenceof Bishops or the Diocesan Bishop.
When planning the music for a particular day, we look at the hierarchy above, and, culling from the resources available, choose one that best suits the service of the Mass that day. Some days, like Palm Sunday, we are closer to taking the 1st,
Mass of Remembrance
October 30, 2022
and most preferred option. Other days, like during the Season of Lent, we take the 4th option, singing a common Gathering Rite for the various Sundays of the season. We take this same approach with the Offertory and Communion antiphons, striving to serve a well balanced diet of the sacred chant, classic and traditional hymns, and contemporary music.
The second place where there is a choice of music is the setting of the Psalm after the First Reading. In the past, we have grown used to singing common psalms in a contemporary setting, as appropriate to the season. Moving forward, we will be singing the psalm of the day, as its nature is that of a companion to the reading. In choosing the music, we follow the same idea as before, mixing chanted psalms and metrical ones.
Then, there is the choosing of the sung parts of the Mass. We vary this by season, again striking a balance between styles. We chant the Ordinary during parts of Ordinary Time and Advent/Christmas, and sing contemporary settings during Lent/Easter and the remainder of Ordinary Time.
Lastly, we aim to strike a balance between all of the different musical styles that we have available to us. During the summer, for example, we use the Roman Missal chants for the Ordinary, so we use more contemporary pieces for the reception of Holy Communion. During the fall when we use a contemporary Mass setting, we will utilize chant during Communion.
All Souls Remembrance
On October 30, 2022 preceding the 12pm Mass our Parish will remember in a special way those who had a funeral Mass at Saint Mary during the past year as well as any relative you may wish to remember. This Mass is an opportunity for us to assist those who grieve the death of a loved one. If you wish the name of a loved one who has died during this past year read out at this Mass, please complete the form below and submit it to the office or complete online HERE. You are then asked to come to the table in the Gathering Space before Mass to receive a candle to be brought to the altar when the name is called.
ForthemonthofNovember
It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection boxes anytime beginning in October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. Online givers can also send in their All Souls remembrance thru our online giving system at GIVE ONLINE HERE Thank you for preserving our Catholic traditions and honoring those who have gone before us.

Quo vadis . . .
My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In practice, probably most of us are like neither the Pharisee nor the tax collector. So both can teach us something. The Pharisee can teach us that religious practices are important, but not enough. They must always be performed in humility and with the goal of deepening our relationship with God. The tax collector can teach us that God doesn’t offer salvation only to the perfect, but to those who acknowledge their sinfulness and cry out for God’s mercy. At the same time, some of us are so busy beating our breasts about our sinfulness that even this can be a form of pride. Like the tax collector, we must let God be God and receive the mercy offered. Though sinners, God exalts those who are in right relationship. Rather than focus unduly on our own sinfulness, we need to turn to God and ask for mercy.
Many thanks to all those who have assisted with our Parish Celebration of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. Our Faith Formation Staff Julia Cullen and Rose Farrow along with Worship and Music Staff Andrew Macirowski and Carly York collaborate to provide the best possible preparation and liturgical celebrations for our parish community.
Next weekend, we welcome John Leonetti who is facilitating our Parish Mission. He will address us at each of the weekend masses. The outline and topics are listed in the e-bulletin. I encourage you to make time to participate in this opportunity for spiritual renewal. Together may the Lord strengthen our resolve to grow Strong in Faith, Joyful in Hope & Active in Charity.
As we approach the month of November let us remember the All Saints and All Souls in our prayer. It is a time for us to critically reflect on the fact that we are all saints and sinners and in need of healing reconciliation. Please consult another section of this bulletin for the All Saints Holy Day Mass Schedule. We have scheduled
Mass in the Church on Wednesday, 2 November for the Commemoration of All the holy Souls. November is also a time for us to exercise the privilege of voting. Please allow yourself to be inconvenienced enough to learn the issues and the positions of the various candidates. Let’s be mature about this privilege and vote according to our beliefs and our conscience. Lots of preparations are underway for our parishioners to donate food to be distributed to the needy.
Next weekend our parish welcomes families to the Annual Halloween Halls with the Intergenerational Presentation and the opportunity to process through the buildings trick or treating. Also, we welcome families who have buried a loved one during the past twelve months. Our Lazarus Ministry and Bereavement Ministry offer tremendous Pastoral Care and Support to these families in the name of our community. Many thanks to all those who generously share their time and talent in building the kingdom of God in our midst.
Our parish staff is completing the 2022 Stewardship Report for our parish. It contains information for the Calendar Year 2021 and the Fiscal Year 1 July 2021– 30 June 2022. I am grateful to our staff members for compiling the information and commentary presented as well as the Finance and Pastoral Council Members for their input. This report is an important instrument of accountability by the staff to you the parishioners as stakeholders of our parish. It will be sent to you electronically in the coming weeks and posted to our parish website. Please take the time to read it section by section. It is my hope that this report will further your understanding of how we serve the community as well as an invitation for all our parishioners to consider greater involvement. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday Peace. Father Jeff

Saint of the Week: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
The Revelation of St. John tells us that Michael led the heavenly hosts that cast Satan and his followers out of heaven. He was also regarded in the early Church as the protector of Christians against the devil. Appropriately, he is the patron saint of infantry, paratroopers, mariners, and police.
Gabriel was the archangel who was God's messenger. He was mentioned twice as such in the Old Testament (Book of Daniel), but is more prominently known in two New Testament passages. Read more HERE.
