The Sacraments of Initiation

Three of the seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church are considered the Sacraments of Initiation as they impart God’s grace on us in the early days of forming our commitment to the Church. The first is Baptism, usually done in infancy or early childhood. The candidate has water poured over them and is baptized in the Trinitarian formula (in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). They are also anointed with Sacred Chrism and the Oil of Catechumens.

The second is Confirmation, which in our modern age is celebrated as the last of the three, but second if part of the OCIA(more on that below). This sacrament is generally conferred by the local bishop or his designee, in which the candidate is sealed with the Sacred Chrism and receives the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, deepening our relationship with God.

The last is Holy Communion. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith, the body and blood of Christ mystically uniting us with each other, and the entire body of Christ (past, present and future).

Adults who wish to become Catholic may undergo a process known as the Order of Christian Initiation ofAdults, in which they go through a period of discernment, purification and enlightenment before being welcomed into full Communion with the Church at the Easter Vigil. Those who are unbaptized will receive all three sacraments during the same Mass. This also more closely resembles the original ordering of the sacraments from the days of the early Church.

Here in our parish, we regularly celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism outside of the seasons ofAdvent and Lent. During the month of October, we also celebrate the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

We ask that you pray for those who receive these Sacraments in our parish, throughout our Diocese, and throughout the universal Church. feasts.

Isaac Joques, Priest and Martyr, 1607-1646

Born in Orleans, France, the son of a wealthy merchant, Isaac Joques was sent to a Jesuit school when he was ten years old. While at first wary of the strict rules of his new school, by the time Isaac graduated, he was determined to become a Jesuit priest and a missionary.

Soon after Isaac entered the Jesuit seminary, a group of priests, including Fr. Jean de Brébeuf, visited while enroute to New France (Canada today) as missionaries. The visit rekindled the desire to be a missionary in Isaac and he begged to be allowed to go to a missionary country upon ordination.

Isaac was ordained in 1636 and, at his wish, sent to New France. Soon after, he was assigned to work with the Huron Indian tribe in an area of New France near what is now Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The journey from Montreal, the capitol of New France, to Huron country was always perilous. Iroquois war parties often made raids along the route, killing or capturing many of the Hurons. Since the Hurons regularly made supply runs to Three Rivers and Montreal accompanied by one or more of the Jesuits, this was a recurring danger Read More HERE.

TheDioceseofTrentonhaspartneredwithNCCLonthe Parents and Families at the Center of Faith Formation Project

This five-year grant-funded initiative will directly engage 200 Catholic parishes in 20 cohorts across the United States. This project aims to involve over 30,000 Catholic parents and their families, focusing on how to enhance faith transmission at home during the crucial first two decades of life. Additionally, it seeks to create parish communities that intentionally support and accompany parents and their families.

Among the 200 participating parishes, the Parish of Saint Mary is one of eleven in our Diocese involved in this important study, which has great potential to benefit our community. The objective is to create a parish plan to nurture the faith of the family from birth to high school graduation connecting milestones such as Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. Our parish team is actively engaged in the NCCL study, focusing on creating a tailored plan that addresses the specific needs of our community.

Families of children recently baptized, along with those involved in Religious Education, will receive an email containing a link to participate in the NCCL Survey Monkey. It is encouraged to check for this email and complete the survey, which is designed to assist the team in gathering data for their study. The survey is brief and will take approximately eight minutes to complete.

Updates on the study will be shared regularly in the bulletin, and the parish community is encouraged to keep the team in their prayers. Let us come together in support of this important work, trusting in God's guidance for our parish's future.

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Much of our doing for others is simply part of our everyday circumstances, for example, parents taking care of their children or a worker cooperating with others on a team job. Being the slave of all isn’t always something extra or big; most of the time it is simply doing our everyday tasks and keeping in mind that others are the body of Christ. If we can do these everyday tasks with loving care, then if something big comes along we won’t deny Jesus like the apostles but will say “we can.”

Congratulations to all of our confirmati those having been confirmed Friday. We also congratulate their parents, sponsors and family members. This is a true milestone for them. We know that faith is passed on in the family. Parish clergy, catechists and formation coordinators assist parents in this essential role. It is my hope that the Eucharist will continue to nurture these families, especially the confirmati, as they continue their journey of faith. Congratulations is also extended to those families who are presenting children for their First Holy Communion this weekend at the 12 Noon mass. Christian Discipleship is about Mission, growing in Faith and embracing the call to conversion. Let us pray for these families and all those who are passing on our Catholic Faith to the next generation. Special thanks to Rose Farrow, Julia Cullen

Later this month we will host the annual Halloween Halls with mass on Saturday at 4:00pm and an intergenerational activity followed by trick or treating throughout the Madonna Hall. The annual Mass of Remembrance will also be held later this month to assist those who are grieving the death of a loved one who died during the past 12 months. Preparations are underway for All Souls Day, the Thanksgiving Food Drive, Fall Clean Up of our 25 Acres, First Penance & Reconciliation/Advent Confessions, Light Up a Memory Tree Lighting and much more. Check out the parish bulletin, e-blasts for activities and opportunities to get involved. These are great ways to give back while meeting other parishioners.

The Annual Stewardship report is being prepared. The contents report activities for the Calendar Year 2023 and the Fiscal Year 1 July 2023 – 30 June 2024. It will be sent electronically to all of our registered parishioner. I encourage you to take the time and review its contents. It is one of the ways we are transparent and accountable to you our parishioner stakeholders. I am grateful to our staff for their service and oversight.

Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday!

Peace. Father Jeff
