Mysteries of the Rosary PART I

The Joyful Mysteries recall moments in the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

THE ANNUNCIATION - Mary is visited by the Archangel Gabriel, is given the news that she will bear a son, Jesus, the savior, and accepts God’s will.

THE VISITATION - The visit of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist, even though beyond child-bearing years. The infant leaps for joy within the womb at the presence of Mary and her unborn child.

THE NATIVITY - The birth of Jesus in the humblest of circumstances; the first Christmas.

THE PRESENTATION - Mary and Joseph take the infant Jesus to the temple, where she is greeted and praised by Anna and Simeon.

THE FINDING IN THE TEMPLE - Jesus, at twelve years old, is discovered in the Temple, his Father’s house, conversing with the scribes and elders.

Traditionally, the joyful mysteries are prayed on Monday, Saturday, and Advent Sundays.

The Sorrowful Mysteries recall events during the Passion of Jesus.

THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN - Jesus praying in garden at Gethsemane, that he may not have to undergo the coming trials, but accepts his Father’s will.

THE SCOURGING AT THE PILLAR - Jesus is brought before Pilate, who, finding no fault in Jesus, hands him over to be beaten and scourged.

THE CROWNING WITH THORNS - Jesus is mocked, ridiculed, and humiliated by the guards and crowds, who strip him of his garments, weave a crown out of thorns, and place it on his head.

THE CARRYING OF THE CROSS - Jesus’ ordeal to carry his own cross through the streets, jeered at by the crowds.

THE CRUCIFIXION AND DEATH - Jesus is crucified on Good Friday, along with the two criminals, and after further mocking, hands over his spirit to the Father.

These mysteries are prayed on Tuesday, Friday, and Lenten Sundays.

ALL SOULS By the request of some parishioners, we are including an All Souls envelope in our quarterly package. It is the Church’s custom to reserve the month of November for the remembrance of all the faithful departed. Please use your All Souls envelope to write the names of those loved ones you would like to remember and kindly drop it in the collection basket anytime beginning October. The envelopes will be wrapped and placed near the tabernacle, and an intention will be added to the prayer of the faithful in the Masses celebrated on All Souls Day and during the month of November. EXPECTATIONS AS WE GATHER FOR MASS Enter via the front doors of the Church Each person is wearing their mask and to observe social distancing when entering/exiting, selecting a seat, & processing/recessing to receive Holy Communion. It will require all to come earlier than usual to search for seating that observes social distancing. Masks and Social/Physical distancing are required. There can be no physical collection of Stewardship Offerings;

A designated box(es) will be placed in the Narthex/ Gathering Space for the placement of envelopes or offerings. Thank you for your generosity. Missals, Missalettes, Bulletins, and other papers have been removed. Holy Water has been drained from all locations. Parish Clergy will distribute Holy Communion; we ask all coming forth to observe distancing front to back and side to side.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass.

NOTE: For those Catholic faithful that need to consider any possible health and safety risks involved with attending a public gathering the weekend Mass will be available online. see page 4 Monday through Friday 9 am Daily Mass in the chapel in the Parish Hall.

MASS OF REMEMBRANCE will be October 31 On Saturday, October 31, 2020, at the 4 pm Mass, our parish will remember in a special way those who have died at the Parish of Saint Mary during the past year as well any relative you may wish to remember. This Mass is an opportunity for us to assist those who grieve the death of a loved one.

If possible, the sponsor should be present for the practice. However, a parent can stand in for the sponsor.

Confirmation is Friday, October 23, 4:00 pm (Arrival time is EARLIER) Due to restrictions on the number of people allowed in our Church at one time, attendance will be limited to the candidate, his/her sponsor, and you, the parents.

We will have a professional photographer present. As we have done in past years, the candidates will gather in Madonna Hall beginning at 3 pm, while the parents and sponsors find their assigned seating in the Church. We intend to have a group photo taken in Madonna Hall with the candidates very briefly removing their masks for the photo.

During the Rite of Confirmation the Celebrant and the priests who are administering the sacrament lay their hands upon those who are to be confirmed. It is here that the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit are received ...“ the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.”

4 - 6 of the Seven Gifts Fortitude/Courage sustains our decision to follow the will of God in any situation. It allows us to stand up and defend our faith, even when threatened by bodily injury or death. This gift allows us to be steadfast in our decisions to do well and to endure evil even when we do not want to.

Knowledge is awareness of God’s plan. It is not simply an accumulation of facts but rather an understanding of God’s purpose and how we ought to respond. Knowledge helps bring to light temptations and to discern whether to give in or live a life worthy of God’s approval.

Reverence is our obedience to God and our willingness to serve him. It is not just obedience through a sense of duty but rather obedience out of love and devotion. It facilitates a deeper respect for God and the Church.

Quo vadis…

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. God’s invitation to us to share in God’s life, to come to God’s banquet table, is remarkable in several ways. For one thing, it points to the intimate relationship God wishes to have with us. For another thing, it is not an invitation issued only once. Even when we refuse the invitation (sin, or don’t come with the proper wedding garment), God continues to invite us. This is the good news of the gospel: God always invites and is patient with us. The obvious banquet to which we are continually invited is the Eucharistic table.

Our acceptance of God’s invitation is more than getting ourselves there—it is also a matter of participating, of giving ourselves over to God’s desire to deepen the divine relationship with us.

Will we come?

During this month of October we continue our journey as disciples of the Lord accompanied by Our Lady of the Rosary. Let us continue to recover this beautiful prayer tradition to help us re-focus ourselves and to give thanks and praise to God. Let us also pray for an increased awareness of and respect for human life from conception through natural death. This is one of the great moral challenges of our time as church.

It requires us to set aside bias and to join together to promote laws and policies that support the very dignity of the human person. I am encouraged by many of our young people.

They have great interest in this part of the Christian Moral Life. I hope that their energy continues to transform our society.

It is that time of year when we are preparing for one of our greatest privileges as Americans…that is the privilege to cast our vote. Election Day is a few weeks away. Take the time to learn about the issues and the candidates. Should you be away, apply for an absentee ballot in order to add your vote to the tally. Do not allow yourself to become indifferent about voting. Talk to your children about what it means to have the freedom to vote.

We continue to welcome back parishioners who are concerned about joining larger groups. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton has continued the dispensation from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. I encourage you to act responsibly when making this choice.

Since our re-opening in June there has only been one Mass on one Sunday when we were close to the 33% capacity. Generally, our attendance has hovered closer to 20%. It is challenging when congregants arrive at the beginning of Mass or 5, 10, 15 minutes after Mass has begun. Keeping physically distanced is less probable and somewhat distracting. Please try your best, especially during these restrictions, to arrive at least a few minutes before Mass is to begin.

Thanks for the great care that you show during this pandemic.

I encourage you to pray for our Candidates for Confirmation and First Communion, their parents and sponsors this month. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

We're happy to announce that St. Mary is now supplying all of our donated food to the St. Vincent de Paul Conference at our Cohort partner, the Church of St. Catharine, in Holmdel. The Conference is very grateful to us for these distributions as they seek to fulfill the great need of the population in the Bayshore area.

Please note that food items with "use by" or expiration dates shorter than two months are not suitable for donation since the food pantry distributions occur on a monthly basis and limited storage is available.

TAI CHI for MEMORY: An Empowering Program for Everyone!

Memory loss or dementia with a loved one can be a worry for family members. Often worries arise from not being able to find one’s keys, or wondering why I opened a drawer, or a friend tells me that they can’t put names with faces. The loss of memories, which makes us who we are, would be devastating.

The latest research and studies have shown that practicing Tai Chi can help preserve and prolong memory. Barbara Schaflin, Certified Instructor in Tai Chi for Memory Program, developed by Dr. Paul Lam’s medical research team, is a member of the Tai Chi for Health Institute. She will present an easy to learn program useful for people with memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, or similar conditions.

Caring for people with memory loss is challenging for care givers and family; this mind-body program engages everyone for quality time together. It will improve most aspects of health including balance, immunity and relaxation, and can be practiced and enjoyed by anyone.

Join us on Wed., Oct. 14 and due to the Pandemic, we will comply with the social distancing rules and wear masks. Members can arrive at noon with their lunches and drinks, since we cannot offer refreshments. The program will start at 12:30.

Food For Thought: In today’s Gospel, we hear the kingdom of heaven compared to a rich feast provided by a generous host. Those originally invited refused to attend because they had better things to do. As instructed, the king’s servants went to the highways and invited whoever they found, opening the invitation to all people. Although all are invited, one person accepted the invitation but showed up improperly dressed and was cast out. (Some scholars believe that, in that culture, wedding clothes were provided by the host.) The point of the story is not about fashion, but about a sincere response to God’s gracious invitation.

We’re invited—not by merit, but by God’s grace—to come enjoy the lavish banquet of God’s love. Accepting this invitation calls for an appropriate response. We show our sincerity and gratitude by loving God in return and by sharing His love with others. To do any less reveals us as not “suited” to participate in a love feast.

There is a wonderful raffle this year where you can win $1,600 in gift cards to local restaurants for a $20 ticket (6 for $100). The Raffle drawing is Wednesday, October 21 at 10:30 am at the Bishop Chancery Offices at 10:30 a.m., the Wednesday after the Gala.
