Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Mass Book for 2023 is now open for intention requests throughout the year. You can download this form, fill it out and submit it to the parish office with your payment or visit online to make your requests online paying by credit card/bank account. The suggested stipend is $10 per intention.

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: Jesus is always kind to those who love him. How do you show your love for Jesus?

Question for Youth: This week we celebrate Christ the King. In the best sense of the word, a King is some one who cares for the people under his care, and also has authority over them. When have you felt Jesus’ care for you? How do you allow Jesus to have authority over you?

Question for Adults: As you think about Jesus on the cross, having compassion on the “good thief,” what lesson do you draw from it for your own life?

SANCTUARY LAMPS 2023

Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Chapel in honor of a living or deceased loved one.

One intention is accepted per week (Sunday - Saturday) for the Lamp. The suggested donation is $25. Request online HERE.

Giving Thanks The origins of our Thanksgiving holiday can be traced back to long before the “first Thanksgiving”.

Early cultures such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans had periodic feasts and festivals which paid tributeto their gods after a bountiful harvest.

The Jewish holiday of Sukkot, commonly known as the “Feast of Gathering” or “Feast of Tabernacles” is a week long celebration in late September / early October, which marked the end of harvest time and also serves to remind the Jewish of the Israelite’s Exodus from Egypt, and their reliance on God for their journey, and to give thanks to the Lord for his goodness.

The Native Americans also celebrated harvest time, and both the Separatist and Puritan settlers brought traditions of fasting in times of tribulation or penitence and feasting in times of abundance to give thanks to God.

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in US Catholic churches, with its own selection of readings and propers. Many towns often hold ecumenical services and other interfaith gatherings where differences in belief systems are put aside, and we celebrate our commonalities. In our community, we partner annually with the Colts Neck Reformed Church to come together, pray together, and give

thanks to God for the blessing He has bestowed upon us.

Saint Cecilia

The feast day of Saint Cecilia, virgin and martyr, is celebrated on November 22. She was married to a nobleman, Valerian, and having devoted her life to God, sang to the Lord during her nuptials. She retained her virginity, having instructed her new husband to go and be baptized, after which he returned to find Cecilia in the midst of an angel, adorning her with roses and lilies. She often preached, converting many to Christianity, and consistently sang songs of praise to God (making her the patroness of musicians)

She was martyred under the reign of Roman prefect Almachius in the 2nd century AD.

The common story is that an executioner struck her neck three times, and she lived for three days afterward, continuing to preach, and praise the Lord.

Saint of the Week: Miguel Agustin Pro, Priest and Martyr, 1891 1927

www.stmaryscoltsneck.org November 20, 2022 4
Often, if we think at all about martyrs in modern times, we remember saints like Maximilian Kolbe or Edith Stein, victims of the Nazi Holocaust. But others also gave their lives for their faith in the 20th century, even in the western hemisphere. Miguel Agustin Pro was one of these. Read more HERE. Aside from Lent, a time of preparation for the celebration of the Pascal Mystery during the Triduum, Advent is the best possible time for us to repent and ready our hearts in order to fully celebrate the Incarnation of Christ.

The sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation is the most powerful way by which we can prepare to engage whole heartedly in the extraordinary event we know as Christmas.

Quo vadis . . .

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King of the Universe. The good thief asked, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” This solemnity celebrates Christ as King, his kingdom has come. We are living in God’s kingdom now. But we are called not to simply pay homage to our exalted King, but to do as he did. This means that each day we must live in selfsacrifice because only through the cross is God’s reign at hand. Living the paschal mystery means living the cross. Just as the cross was the means to Jesus’ exaltation, so is the cross the means to our own entry into Paradise. When self-sacrifice seems to swallow us up and we are tempted to choose a self-serving attitude, all we need to do is remember that the cross is THE door to Paradise…THE only way.

Thanksgiving Day is observed this week. As Roman Catholics we give thanks each and every time we celebrate the Eucharist. Being a thankful people is so essential to being a Christian Community. May we continue to cultivate in our lives and in the lives of our children and young people an attitude of gratitude. Please join us for the Annual Thanksgiving Ecumenical Service being hosted by the Reformed Church this year. Also, come to mass Thanksgiving Day Morning at 9am so that, together as a community of faith, we can give thanks and praise to Almighty God for the many blessings we have received in our lives, most especially the great gift of faith. Many thanks to all those who have participated in our Thanksgiving Food Drive and all those who coordinated our efforts as well as those who generously delivered these food items.

The Liturgical Season of Advent begins next weekend. It is the beginning of a new Liturgical Year. This coming week our parish church buildings, office and exterior sites will begin to be prepared for the Advent Christmas Seasons. It is a great task requiring much time, energy and cooperation. It is very important for us to include parishioners, new and experienced, in completing these essential tasks. I hope that we will be willing to invite and welcome young adults and families to receive the mantle of responsibility for some of these aspects of parish life. It is in this way that they continue to learn from some of our long term parishioners all of the details of preparing for the various liturgical seasons. It is wonderful to experience this passing on of the customs, traditions and pride that characterize our Catholic Community. As the pace begins to pick up in preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas, make sure that you are pro-active in providing for your spiritual preparation. We are providing reflection guides for personal use. These daily reflections help us to embrace the images of the season. They are complimentary and are available first come, first served beginning this coming weekend. Make time to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (confession). Our Penance Service is scheduled for Sunday 4 December 2022 at 3pm in our parish church.

Recently I participated in the Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. Then I drove to Saint Meinrad Archabbey, St. Meinrad Indiana for my annual retreat. This coming week I will be joining my family in Northern Virginia for Thanksgiving Day this year. My sister and her family will be hosting us. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday.

Happy Thanksgiving. Peace. Father Jeff

"But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, 'Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over.' And Jesus said to him, 'today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost.' " LK 19:8-10
