Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. FOR DEEPER REFLECTION

Everyone who believes in the Son will have eternal life and I shall raise them up on the last day.

Question for Children: How did Jesus do God’s will?

Question for Youth: Why did Jesus come down from Heaven?

Question for Adults: How have your thoughts about death and eternal life developed over time?

SAINTS OF THE WEEK

Rose Philippine Duchesne, Religious, 1769-1852 Philippine, as she was called by her family, was born into an aristocratic family in Grenoble, France. The marriage of her mother, Rose Périer, to her father, Pierre-François Duchesne, had united the two most prosperous textile manufacturing families of the town. The family traits of strong will and determination were passed on to Philippine, along with a passion for reading and study. When Philippine was not yet ten years old, a Jesuit missionary visited her family. Telling tales of working with Indians in the Louisiana territories of the New World, he enkindled a desire in Philippine to be a missionary to those Indians, a wish that would take over sixty years to fulfill.

Philippine was schooled in her early years in the Visitandine Convent of Ste-Marie-d’en-Haut, and was greatly influenced by the nuns. At the age of seventeen, Philippine entered the convent there, although her parents, who had been urging her to marry, were reluctant to grant consent for this move. Then, in 1791, the French Revolution reached its peak.

WORSHIP & MUSIC

Andrew J. Macirowski - Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist

All Hallow’s Eve

The vigil ofAll Saints’Day,All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween, has its roots in the older Christian traditions of holding vigils on the evening prior to a Holy Day in the Church. After a vigil service, worshipers would visit a cemetery and light candles or lay flowers in anticipation of the coming days. In some cultures, there was a belief that on this evening, the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead was weak, and people would don masks and costumes so that a departed soul would not recognize them, hence the beginnings of trick-or-treating.

All Saints’Day

The Solemnity ofAll Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation, is the day when the church celebrates all the Saints and Martyrs, including those unknown, and honors the Church Triumphant (saints and others who have entered the Kingdom of Heaven). It is a day that reminds us of our eternal reward, and of the Saints who have lived (and sometimes given) their lives in service of the Church.

The Commemoration ofAll the Faithful Departed Commonly known asAll Souls’Day, The Commemoration ofAll the Faithful Departed is a Roman Catholic feast, in which the living faithful pray for the faithful departed who have not yet attained their heavenly reward, as their souls are purified in purgatory. Masses held on this day are in memory of all those who have died (hence the name, ALL Souls), and it is customary to visit the graves of loved ones following Mass, and to pray for the happy repose of their souls. Some worship communities have prayer services at cemeteries as well, with graveside blessings. Others choose to remember, in a special way, those who have specifically died within the past year.

• Church of St. Leo the Great, Lincroft

How to Become a Registered Parishioner

Being a registered and active member of a parish is an important part of living out our Catholic faith in community. The Parish of St. Mary considers someone an active member when they:

• Attend Mass regularly

• Participate in the life of the parish

• And financially support the parish as they are able.

We also encourage adult children over the age of 25 to register separately as parishioners, even if they continue to live in the same household. This helps them take personal responsibility for their faith journey and stay connected to the life of the Church. Non-residents are encouraged to register in the parish where they reside or attend Mass regularly.

If you're interested in becoming a registered member of our parish, or need help with the process, we’d love to assist you. Please visit our parish website for more information or contact the parish office, we're here to help!

MyDearParishioners:

Quo vadis...

This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of All Saints on Saturday and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls) on Sunday. Thanks to those who helped to prepare the Halloween Halls event this past weekend. It was wonderful to see the children all dressed up in their costumes and enjoy the energy they bring. This event is a reminder to us of our Church’s teaching regarding the place of the Communion of Saints in our Catholic Theology. It is a beautiful image to encourage all disciples of Jesus to become someone “extraordinary” in making a difference. AsRomanCatholics, weprayfor all of the “Holy Souls” as a reminder of the consistentteachingof theChurchregarding purgation, not as a penalty, but rather as something that flows from Christian Maturity. Let us pray for all those who have gone before us and for those who await the fullness of the Kingdom of God promised us in the Sacraments. The month of Novemberisthemonthof AllSaintsandAll Souls. I encourage you to come and pray in a special way for all of our beloved deceased. May the saints present, past and future continue to inspire all people to choose the path of conversion so as to achieve the crown of victory over sin and death.

I am grateful to all of you for considering the invitation to evaluate your charitable giving, especially to our parish. As Christians, we arecalled togenerously share ourblessings.Asparishionersof thisparish, we are co-responsible as stakeholders in the missionof thechurchherein07722. Thisis a very personal matter. Stewardship of

Treasure is a very sensitive topic. However, I would be remiss in my pastoral oversight if we did not invite all of our parishioners and stakeholders to prayerfully consider how we support our parish. Since the pandemic expenses in general have risen at a much higher percentage than revenue in funding the regular operation of our parish. I would never ask you to do something that I myself would not do. I have recently evaluated and increased my financial support of our parish. Together we make our parish strong and vibrant. As always thank you for your kind consideration of thisrequest.

This coming week we will have the awesome privilege and responsibility to VOTE. As Americans, we sometimes take this for granted. I encourage you to be informed about the issues and the candidates. Cast your vote based on these issues and the available information concerning the candidates’ record of voting. This is a real moral obligation for us. It is not enough to blindly cast your vote without any information, knowledge or responsibility. Review the sample ballot, learn about the candidates and their positions on the issues. This is our opportunity to affirm and thank those who are working to make our society a better place. Our prayerful support is extended to those candidates for public office who may be part of our parish community. Next week we will pray in a special way for all Veterans, past and present, their families and all those who support them as part of our Veterans Day observance. May God continue to bless you. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Peace. FatherJeff
