Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

This week the Sanctuary Lamp burns for… Church:IntentionsofGinnyHamlin Requested by: Rorie, Jeanne and Linda Sanctuary Lamp

The month of May is traditionally associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Paul VI identified the month of May as a time to incorporate specific prayers for peace. And Mary, being Queen of Peace, brings these special prayers to her son, Jesus Christ.
The crowning of an image of Blessed Virgin Mary is a tradition in the Catholic Church, wherein a crown woven out of flowers is placed upon a statue of Mary to signify her role as Queen of Heaven and Mother of God. In small towns where church and home life are heavily intertwined, this practice always takes place on the 1st day of May. Other customs include the Sunday closest to this day, following the “high Mass” of the day, or even as part of Mother’s Day festivities.
There is a prescribed rite for the Crowning of an Image of the Blessed Virgin Mary which we follow. On the first Saturday of May, following the 4pm Mass, the faithful will depart the church while singing the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (wherein we pray for the intercession of the Blessed Mother, and call her by her many titles - Queen of Peace, Mother of Mercy, Seat of Wisdom, etc)
The priest or deacon proclaims a prescribed prayer and the image is crowned, while appropriate hymns are sung. The rite concludes with a prayer of blessing and the Regina Caeli.
Individual devotions often take place following the rite, but are not prescribed. Traditionally, the rosary is not prayed during this event, but it is encouraged that those who pray the rosary at home or at church do so in the presence of an image of the Blessed Mother during the month of May.
Our only certain knowledge of Matthias comes from the Acts of the Apostles. After the Ascension, Peter stated that they should pick a successor to Judas Iscariot to fulfill the Scripture. Peter said, “Therefore it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection.” [Acts 2:21-22] The apostles selected Joseph Barsabbus and Matthias as candidates and prayed for guidance before drawing lots. Matthias was selected. Tradition handed down by the great historians of the early Church, Clement of Alexandria, Eusebius, and St. Jerome, tell us that Matthias first preached in Judea then moved on to Cappadocia and to the shores of the Caspian Sea where he planted the faith. He is said to have suffered great persecutions and was martyred in Colchis. St. Matthias is the patron of carpenters and tailors. A Feast honors this apostle on May 14.
Matthias' message today: Although he was a disciple of Jesus throughout most of his ministry, Matthias had no idea that he might be selected as one of the twelve after Jesus ascended into heaven. We, too, have no idea what God may have in store for us, so we must live our lives anticipating that we may be called at any time.

“ The Most memorable parts of the sessions were in session 5, wherein, we are assured of God’s mad love for us, because he promises t be us always.”
“Through the videos and table discussions, I feel that my eyes are more open just as the Apostles eyes were at Emmaus. The videos and discussions help me gain a deeper understanding of the importance in receiving the Eucharist as often as I Can. I think every Catholic should take this course”
“ I also want t say I especially enjoyed working with and learning from Barbara. She did a wonderful job leading each session , and made me feel comfortable with sharing at our table discussions

“Easter
The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following:
The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year often called “Easter duty” for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2024 to Trinity Sunday, May 26, 2024. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter. Yes, the command is simple: “love one another.” The demand is imposing: lay down our lives. Keeping God’s commandments is laying down our lives—we surrender our will to doing God’s will and in this is the dying. Caring for and reaching out to others is laying down our lives also a dying. Doing the little things every day not because we have to but because we see the other as the beloved of God is dying. We choose all these and other ways to dying because we know this is love and love is risen Life rising to kiss us with a share in divinity.
This weekend we keep the tradition of crowning the image of the Blessed Mother. I enjoyed hearing the many and varied stories from our parishioners. So many recall having crowned the image of the blessed mother in their childhood home parishes and schools. I was particularly struck by some of the facial expressions of our young people who were present. We pray that Saint Mary, Seat of Wisdom will continue to intercede for us, our families and our parish community.
The Month of May is a time to honor Saint Joseph, the Worker; the Apostles Saints Philip and James; Saint Matthias, Apostle; Saint Lucy Filippini; Mary, Mother of the Church; Saint Rita of Cascia; Saint Augustine of Canterbury; the Solemnities of the Ascension; Pentecost; Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. Our liturgical prayer helps to shape us and nurture our faith. Take time to enter into these mysteries. Our Summer Mass
Schedule begins Memorial Day weekend and concludes Labor Day Weekend. The major shift is that the Saturday Anticipatory Mass shifts from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. Abbreviated Mass Schedules will be observed Memorial Day Weekend, this year the weekends before and after Independence Day, and Labor day Weekend. Mark your personal schedules today.
Our parish has been and continues to be blessed by many faithful volunteers who heed the call of Stewardship to share of their Time, Talent & Treasure for the building up of the Church and the Evangelization of others. There are many ways in which to serve. Please contact me or a member of the parish staff if you are interested in learning more. A special request goes to those who have recently retired from their careers. Retirement is truly a time to give back. It is a time to do something that can truly make a difference in the life of the community.
The 2024 Easter Collection Report should be published Pentecost Weekend. Thank you for your generous support, sharing and prayer. This week, 8 May to be exact, I have completed eleven years of service to Saint Mary Parish as Pastor…Year 12 is beginning! May God continue to open our hearts and minds in prayer and service as we build upon the firm foundation that has been prepared for us here in 07722.
I have been away for some time of rest taking some of my accrued days off. I return this coming week. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Peace. Father Jeff
