Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Worship & Music
The Ascension of the Lord
Andrew J. Macirowski - Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist
Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org
Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org
The Solemnity of the Ascension, traditionally celebrated 40 days after Easter, is as such to make symmetry with the 40 days of Lent that precede the Sacred Paschal Triduum. The Solemnity of Pentecost, which occurs on the 50th day after Easter, allows for a novena (9 days of prayer) to be observed between the two celebrations.
At least, that is what we are used to. In the United States, the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia observe Ascension Thursday as a Holy Day of Obligation. This includes: Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey*, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania. In all other US provinces, the Solemnity is transferred to and replaces the 7th Sunday of Easter. While this may allow a greater convenience to the faithful, especially in those areas of the country where priests are at an even greater shortage and parishes are many miles apart, the symbolism of the numbers falls to the wayside, as do the readings for the 7th Sunday of Easter.
*Last year, 2022, the Archdiocese of Newark permanently transferred the Ascension to the 7th Sunday of Easter, thus we will observe this Solemnity next weekend.
This solemnity commemorates Jesus’ ascension into heaven, an important tenet of our Catholic Christian faith, professed in both the Apostle’s Creed and the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed. The Ascension event is a key component of our understanding of the post-Easter narratives and the concept of the holy trinity. This event is the return of the Son to the Father which precedes the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles 10 days later. Another key theological aspect ties into the resurrection - Jesus was resurrected by the will of the Father and through the Father’s power, but Jesus ascends by his own will and power, the final earthly manifestation of his might and glory.
Saint of the Week:
Justin, Martyr, c. 100-165
Justin, a layman, was the first great apologist of Christianity and a number of his lengthy writings remain with us today. Born of Greco-Roman parents, Justin received the best liberal education available in his day. He studied rhetoric, history, poetry, and was especially interested in philosophy. But none of the philosophers whom he studied seemed to have exactly what he was looking for.
One day, as Justin was walking near the seashore pondering one of Plato’s maxims, he found himself being followed by a venerable looking old man. This stranger aroused Justin’s interest by telling him of a philosophy more virtuous and satisfying than any he had studied to that time.

“Easter Duty”
The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following:
The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year often called “Easter duty” for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 26, 2023 to Trinity Sunday, June 4, 2023. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter. So much of resurrection belief rests in intimacy with Jesus and we know such intimacy is to characterize all of Christian life. Yet it’s difficult to keep things in perspective: so much of our life seems anything but connected to Jesus let alone his resurrection. Our sheer busyness hardly leaves us with a moment to catch our breath let alone be concerned about intimacy with Jesus! We have difficulty being intimate with those we love with whom we work and spend our lives; how in the world can we talk in any practical terms about intimacy with Jesus? Intimacy with Jesus doesn’t require that we pray all the time or that we are consciously aware of Jesus’ presence. Intimacy with Jesus is a simple matter of keeping his commandments—being gentle and reverent toward others, having a clear conscience, doing good (see second reading). For most of us we are already doing what we need to do to be good Christians; what more is needed is to recognize that these good actions are already receiving the intimacy Jesus offers. He makes all good possible.
The Solemnity of Pentecost is observed on the 50th Day of Easter. This Solemnity marks the completion of the New Covenant of the Almighty with the People of God in promising to remain with us always…untiltheendof theage. Theoutpouring of the Paraclete is in essence the birthing of the Church, enabling the
Apostles and their successors to continue the Mission of Christ by evangelizing and sacramentally initiating new members into the Body of Christ the Church. This Pentecost is observed Memorial Day Weekend this year. Make a point to go to church wherever you may find yourself.
The 2023 Easter Collection report will be published the weekend of the Solemnity of Pentecost. Those who have not made their gift to the 2023 Easter are encouraged to do so ASAP. Those who have made their gift, Thank You. We continue to make slow steady progress toward achieving our goal for the 2023 Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you for your generous sharing to support His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton. Our rebate money is applied toward the continued replacement of all light fixtures throughout our parish campus… from fluorescent to LED…less energy used…no bulbs and ballasts…less maintenance required.
Enjoy these beautiful Spring Days. Remember all those who embrace the Vocation of Motherhood in your prayer. Thanks to all those who participated in the Annual May Crowning. It is a lovely custom honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary and entrusting our parish to her maternal care and intercession. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Life is above all, a pilgrimage! Most of us find ourselves praying on the run, pleading for help as we move about from one urgent task to the next. During this retreat we will follow the advice of the pilgrim in the classic The Way of the Pilgrim whose mastery of the Jesus Prayer fulfilled his desire for unceasing prayer. I am hoping that this retreat experience will quench our thirst for prayer and help each of us on our lifelong pilgrimage to peace, healing, and union with God. Led by S. Marcy. Donation: $30, includes lunch. Zoom $25.
THE GIFT OF ASCENDING
Thursday, May 18 1:00 – 4:00 pm
“Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.”
On the day of the Ascension, angels advised the Apostles to not spend their time looking to the heavens to find Jesus! Do we need a similar reminder? Come, join our exploration, as we seek to find the presence of Jesus in Scripture, in nature, in silence, in life's events and in our own hearts. Led by Sister Marie
