Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The practice of veiling the images of Christ and the saints goes back to medieval times, where, beginning on Passion Sunday (the 5th Sunday of Lent in the modern liturgical calendar) all images other than the stained glass windows and the stations of the cross were covered in purple or red cloth. This was, and is done, in order to draw our focus to the Passion and death of our Lord, and remind us that without the sacrifice on the cross, there would be no resurrection and salvation. This is especially poignant on Palm Sunday and Good Friday, where we recall the passion in detail. Removing the images of the crucifix from our eyes leaves us in a state without the image of our salvation and draws our prayer inward, as we focus on the hope of the coming Holy Season of Easter. Removing the images of the saints (members of the church triumphant) draws our focus to our own penitence, temporarily blocking that promise of the communion of saints from our physical view.
These images are customarily unveiled during the singing of the Gloria at the Easter Vigil. The statuary in our church makes this difficult, due to ladders being necessary, so they are unveiled during the decorating of the Church on the morning of Holy Saturday.

OurAs a young man, Turibius (or Toribio) was educated in law and soon recognized as a brilliant scholar. He became a professor of law at the University of Salamanca where he attracted the notice of the king, Philip II. After some time, the king appointed Turibius the chief judge of the Inquisition, an unusual appointment for a layman. He fulfilled his duties in a most humane manner, with wisdom and discretion.
Some years later, the archbishopric of Lima, Peru became vacant. Peru had been troubled by outrageous abuses against the Indians on the part of Spanish conquerors. The clergy, if not actually contributing to the abuses, condoned them by ignoring the plight of the natives. Missionary work was at a virtual standstill.
An archbishop who could change all of this was required and Turibius, who had impressed all with his judiciary skills and the strength of his character, was selected. Stunned by this decision, Turibius argued that canon law prohibited lay men from – Read More HERE.

“The makes it very clear that this variety of offices and roles is desirable and should be maintained. In fact it goes so far as to state: …’all, therefore, whether they are ordained ministers or Christian faithful, in fulfilling their offices or their duty, should carry out solely but completely that which pertains to them.’-There is a wide variety of services to be performed, and it is desirable that different individuals exercise those services so that the talents and gifts God has placed within the Christian community are fully utilized (USCCB).

“In the beginning I was trying to go it alone. I was reading the Bible by myself, and even though it s a very strong time and emotional time to sit and read the Bible, I learned that you can’t go it alone. You need community. To be part of the Catholic Church is that bigger part that was missing.” – Kyle
Being a Catholic means being part of a spiritual family. Often, it can be your flesh-and-blood family, or it can be a close friend who invites you to “come and see.” As you enter the Church, the parish community and the RCIA Program will walk with you on your journey of faith.

This Week’s Story of Hope…
INDONESIA. “Many of the country’s more than 17,000 islands are in the Ring of Fire, a region around the rim of the Pacific Ocean where volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are common. Climate-related disasters also threaten the islands and are becoming more frequent and destructive. Strong rains and wind from these storms combined with long periods without rain, make it difficult for people like Evita Tiro Wada to grow food. Evita and her family live on Flores Island, where she keeps a home garden for food and income. To help her family and community become more resilient against natural disasters and have more reliable access to food, Evita participated in a Catholic Relief ervices’ program. The group helps their community stay safe during emergencies like cyclones and earthquakes. They created a system to warn people to evacuate and identified evacuation routes, assembly points and resources they can use during a crisis. The group also maintains a community garden. They grow vegetables like beans, eggplant and water spinach to provide healthy food for their families” (www.crsricebowl.org).

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate The Fifth Sunday of Lent. We see Jesus by being Jesus. It’s that simple! And that’s challenging. We don’t enter the paschal mystery as the dying and rising rhythm of our Christian living apart from Jesus. When we do take up the cross and die not in the physical sense but by laying down our lives in service we are able to see that the cross is one of glory. We see Jesus in those who lay down their life in servanthood and others see Jesus in us when we are servants. We must take care that others see not just the dying, but also the glory. What a seeing! This weekend we will come together to receive the mercy of God in the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation. Sunday at 3:00pm we will welcome 12 or so priest confessors to serve our parish needs. I encourage all to participate as we prepare for the Great Solemnity of Easter. It is especially important that families come together for this service. It is important for children that they become more familiarized with how to go to confession. It is important for adults to model for their children how to go to confession. Our church encourages us to go to confession as part of our Easter Duty. Thank you for making the time in your very hectic schedules for the celebration of God’s Grace in the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation.
Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion & Death is observed next weekend. I am so grateful that we are able to come together for the Eucharist and to listen to the Solemn Proclamation of the Passion. Palm will be distributed to all at the conclusion of each mass and will be blessed prior to the mass. Please make an extra effort to arrive 5 minutes before the mass is scheduled to begin so that you may locate a seat. We may experience a few more folks at the regular Sunday Masses. So, if I may suggest: plan to arrive a few moments earlier; car pool with friends,
don’t get flustered if there is someone in “your seat”; be gracious and hospitable to those who may not be familiar to you; introduce yourself and offer a word of welcome. We will be adding extra seating throughout the nave of the church building so that you may spread out as best as you can. These simple courtesies are one way in which we become what we celebrate in Eucharist. Don’t ever discount the power of simple random acts of kindness in our midst.
Our thanks go out to all those who have been preparing our worship sites for Holy Week, the Triduum, and Easter. Many hands make for easier burdens. We are finalizing the schedule of participants in these sacred rites. Thanks to all for your generous Stewardship of Time and Talent. Please review the Holy Week Schedule mailed directly to all of our registered parishioners. Put it in a convenient place in your home for easy reference. Plan to participate in the liturgies of our parish supporting one another in prayer as we recall the great central mysteries of our faith. Invite family members or friends to come with you to our parish church…especially those who may feel alienated or marginalized from the Catholic Community. This is a very simple way in which you can be evangelizers… reminding those around you of God’s presence in our time.
Our Spring Clean up is scheduled for Saturday, 6 April this year. We need lots of hands. Come with your gloves, rakes, tarps, chain saws, leaf blowers. This is a great way to come together and meet other parishioners while providing an important service. Many thanks to those who have made their gift or pledge to the 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal. If you have not done so, please do so as soon as possible so that we might reach our parish goal. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday! Peace.

The 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal launched February 24 and 25 throughout the Diocese of Trenton
Each year the Bishop seeks the support of all the members of the diocese to further the work of our ministries. Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ’s name, and each of us can share in all we do with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gift to the ACA. This year St. Mary Parish share of the goal remains at $75,000. As the people of the Diocese of Trenton, you have an opportunity to help others see Christ working in our midst. Please take a moment and truly reflect on any help you can give. We truly need everyone to participate. Pledge cards will be available at all masses next weekend.
You can also make a gift online at https:// dioceseoftrenton.org/catholicappeal
Thank you for your support, and may God continue to bless you and your family.

To celebrate the Eucharistic Revival, and to kick off year 3 of this very important movement that begins this summer '24, the Parish of Saint Mary will be gifting each family a copy of Bishop Robert Barron's book ‘This is My Body’ on Pentecost. Pentecost, this year on May 19, 2024, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. Pentecost is celebrated on the seventh Sunday after Easter which is also fifty days after Easter.
About the book: “In this brief but illuminating text, Bishop Barron offers a threefold analysis of the Eucharist as sacred meal, sacrifice, and Real Presence, helping readers to understand the sacrament of Jesus’ Body and Blood more thoroughly so that they might fall in love with him more completely”– Read the rest of the description HERE
This summer, May 17 - July 16 join the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage. Local communities are gathering tinder in response to God’s invitation for renewal, calling on the Holy Spirit to bring the flame.
In keeping with this vision, the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage will accompany Jesus from city to city, lighting hearts on fire along the way. Then, at the National Eucharistic Congress in July 2024, all these flames will blaze together.
Use this interactive map to explore each of the four unique routes of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage. Then register to attend the events happening near you! Read more HERE.
