Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Question for Children: Why do our parents and teachers have rules we need to follow? Why do you think God has rules for us to follow?
Question for Youth: God has created us with free will, the freedom to follow or ignore God’s will for us. How can you discover God’s will for you
Question for Adults: We humans are vulnerable to sin. Our sins most often lead to shame, mistrust, and blaming. How can following God’s will free you from these destructive actions?

This solemnity, one of the later ones to enter in the liturgical calendar, is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost, or 5 days after Corpus Christi; therefore, always on a Friday. Due to the moveable date of Easter, this celebration can occur anyway from late May to early July, although it most often falls during June. Thus, the month of June is also dedicated to the Sacred Heart.
The devotion to the Sacred Heart, more specifically to the love of God as symbolized by the heart of Jesus, has been practiced by many and can be traced back as a communal practice to the 11th century and back even further in the private devotions of the early church fathers, such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Ambrose.
Although not a holy day of obligation, it is an obligatory solemnity for the church, meaning that the solemnity will supplant whatever other memorial may normally occur on that day in the calendar. Like a Sunday, it has 3 sets of readings, one for each Sunday cycle of the liturgical year. It also serves as a special day of prayer for the sanctification of priests; as such, all are encouraged to pray especially for priests, that they may continue to live holy lives, and serve well the Lord and his faithful on earth, as well as for vocations to priestly ministry.
The image of the sacred heart is that of a human heart, crowned with flame, surrounded by thorns, a cross rising from the top, pierced with a lance and bleeding. This symbolized Christ’s suffering at Calvary, but also his triumph over death and the power of his love. Statuary often depicts Jesus with his arms outstretched and the heart in front of the chest, or pointing to his heart, calling attention to his love and redeeming grace.
Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, into a wealthy family. When he was only fifteen, he asked to be sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz. After learning theology, he asked permission to leave and Abbey so that he could join the new Franciscan Order. Sometime later, the Dominican friars came to visit the Franciscans. There was confusion about who would deliver the homily. The Dominicans were known for their excellent preaching, so the Franciscans assumed it would be the Dominicans. The Dominicans assumed the Franciscans would provide one. The head of the Franciscan hermitage asked Anthony to speak on whatever the Holy Spirit told him to speak about. Anthony preached a beautiful and moving homily that impressed both groups and Anthony became known for his teaching.
On one occasion, Anthony attempted to preach the Gospel to heretics that would not listen to him. So, Anthony went down to the river banks of the town and preached to the fish. Anthony did not preach to the fish for the benefit of the fish. Rather Anthony preached for the glory of God, the delight of the angles and for his own peace of mind and heart. When the people saw the fish gather near Anthony, they realized they should also listen to what Anthony had to say.
Saint Anthony died at age thirty-six and was canonized less than a year later by Pope Gregory IX. Saint Anthony is the patron of Lost Things. He is credited with many miracles involving lost things and lost people. A Feast honors this saint on June 13.

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. As we continue journey through the Liturgical Season of Ordinary Time, this weekend we are reminded that with the Lord there is mercy and redemption. The Lord waits for us to seek out his presence and ask forgiveness. Jesus, through his birth, suffering, death and resurrection has opened the way for us to abandon the life of sin and destruction providing us the way of hope and God’s love. Perseverance is the way forward. We should never lose heart We must always trust that God will raise us up as Jesus was raised.
This time of the year is busy for our staff. Finalizing the Master Calendar; Ordering Supplies for Summer Programming; Reviewing Budget Proposals and Capital Items to be Purchased & Projects scheduled. All of this is important for us to be focused on the way ahead to better serve our parishioners.
We have a number of new families who have moved into our town and have come to us to become part of our parish community. There is a process for this to be completed each stage is important and informative. Families are not fully registered until the entire process is completed. I am grateful to our parish support staff and team for their careful oversight of this process in welcoming new parishioner families to our community.
We are experiencing a greater number of requests for the Sacrament of Baptism of newborn children. We have redesigned our Baptismal Preparation Process to make it more informative and more efficient maximizing participants time by having videos available prior
to the session. It is our hope that families can watch these and have questions prepared when they come for the session. Another shift has been the participation of our Faith Formation/ Religious Education Staff so that families can meet them early on to establish healthy relationships for the future. Additionally, Father Mike and Deacon Rich serve as the clergy presence to this process.
We are making slow steady process with the 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal. I am grateful to all those who have already made a gift or pledge. I ask those who have not to please do so in the coming week. Thank you for your generous support.
Mrs. Rose Farrow has assumed the role of Pastoral Coordinator of Pastoral Care here at the Parish of Saint Mary and the Parish of Saint Catherine Holmdel She will share her 32 hours weekly between the two parishes. Congratulations Rose and Thank You for your generous service to the Church and our Parishes.
This coming week the universal church observes the Memorial of Saint Anthony of Padua, Doctor of the Church. Devotion to Saint Anthony has spread throughout the world. May we continue to ask the intercession of Saint Anthony as we discern how to better serve the poor and needy in our midst. Later this month we will celebrate the Solemnity of John the Baptist and the Solemnity of Saints Peter & Paul. Have a great Week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Carlo Acutis was born May 3, 1991, in London, where his father was working. Just a few months later, he moved with his parents, Andrea Acutis and Antonia Salzano, to Milan, Italy.
Carlo was diagnosed with leukemia as a teenager. Before his death in 2006, he offered his sufferings for Pope Benedict XVI and for the Church, saying: “I offer all of my suffering to the Lord for the pope and for the Church in order not to go to purgatory but to go straight to heaven.”
From a young age, Carlo had a special love for God, even though his parents weren’t especially devout. Antonia Salzano, his mom, said that before Carlo, she went to Mass only for her first Communion, her confirmation, and her wedding. But as a young child, Carlo loved to pray the rosary. After he made his first Communion, he went to Mass as often as possible at the parish across from his elementary school. Carlo’s love for the Eucharist also inspired a deep conversion for his mother. According to the postulator promoting his cause for sainthood, he “managed to drag his relatives, his parents to Mass every day. It was not the other way around; it was not his parents bringing the little boy to Mass, but it was he who managed to get himself to Mass and to convince others to receive Communion daily. Read More
