Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

As religious freedom week comes to a close, we reflect on our god-given gift of freedom. While we are blest to enjoy our liberty, we also remember that not all of God’s children get to enjoy the same. As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day, let us remember the blessings we have received as a nation. To that end, I share this prayer from the USCCB.
Prayer for the Nation
O God our Creator, from Your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as Your people and given us the right and the duty to worship You, the only true God, and Your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of the Holy Spirit, You call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.
We ask You to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of Your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O Heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all Your sons and daughters gathered in Your Church in this hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
No person had more influence on the settlement of California than Padre Junípero Serra. He was born Miguel José Serra to parents of humble means, living in Petra on the Mediterranean island of Majorca. His early education took place on the island at the Franciscan convent of San Bernardino. The church there had several small chapels on either side of the main altar dedicated to saints. Young Miguel developed a strong love for these saints while attending Mass, and their names including San Diego, San Juan Capistrano, Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles, San Francisco later became the names of the cities and missions which he established along the Camino Real in California.
Miguel was ordained in 1737, and took the name Junípero at that time. In the same year, he was named a professor of philosophy at the university in Palma, Spain. He continued with his studies and, in 1742, earned a doctorate in theology. A year later, he was selected to the Dun Scotus chair of theology at the university. He also became renowned as a preacher on the island and was chosen to preach on the highest holy days. These honors could have been just the beginning for the young priest. His biographers note that he would probably have become the superior of the Franciscans and could very well have been named Bishop of Palma had he remained on Majorca. This was not his calling however. Since he was a boy, Junípero Serra had dreamed of becoming a missionary in the New World. When the opportunity came, he joined about thirty other Franciscan missionaries who sailed to Mexico, arriving on December 2, 1749. For most of the next twenty years, Padre Serra served as a missionary in the harsh environment of the Sierra Madres of northeastern Mexico and as a professor at the College of San Fernando in Mexico City. My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Death is part of our human lives. Yet, Jesus’ inauguration of God’s kingdom vanquishes death and restores life. Like Jairus and the woman with the hemorrhage, all we need to do to overcome death is reach out and touch the nearness of Jesus. Death not only means the cessation of physical life but also all those everyday “dyings to self” that call us to surrender our wills to God’s will. In the Christian mystery, death is the doorway to life. Just as Jairus and the woman forgot their own stations in life and overcame their fears in order to receive life from Jesus, so must we surrender our own wills in order to encounter Jesus and receive life. God’s kingdom of life is not built by avoiding death, but by embracing it. Living the paschal mystery is none other than our daily dying to self---overcoming our fears and reaching out to Jesus in humility---in all the little practical ways that fill our daily routines. Paschal Mystery dying is as simple as smiling at the children even when we are bone tired or taking an hour out of our day to visit the sick. When we surrender in humility to his goodness and power, Jesus offers us life. For our reflection this week: How can your faith have an impact on other people’s lives? What does it mean for you as disciples to build a kingdom of life?
Congratulations to our neighbor and co-hort pastor Reverend Fr. John Folchetti as he observes the Golden Jubilee of Priestly Ordination this weekend. He has served faithfully and generously these many years in our Diocese of Trenton first at CBA/assisting local parishes then as Pastor of Saint Leo the Great Parish,
Lincroft. I will represent our parish community at the solemn Mass of Thanksgiving. Let us keep Fr. John and all priests in our prayer. May we continue to encourage vocations to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ.
As we end another fiscal year it is important for us to pause and to give thanks and praise to almighty God for all the blessings we continue to receive. Even in the midst of some uncertainty there are countless blessings for us to acknowledge. This is especially important when as we prepare to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of our country this coming week. Independence Day is a time to acknowledge the freedom that we enjoy and the sacrifices that have been made and continue to be made in order for us to live in a free society. We will observe an abbreviated Mass schedule for Independence Day this weekend and next weekend.
It has been so very nice having Father Victor Hoagland CP with us these past days. Father stayed with me at the clergy residence and assisted with masses on the weekend and during the week. He has been so much a part of our parish community for three decades. I know many of you are happy to see him during his visits. Hopefully, he will come again this summer. His sister Mary has transitioned to Sunrise Residence & Care Center in Lincroft.
Enjoy these summer days. Try to stay cool and hydrated. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

WASHINGTON – "Called to the Fullness of Dignity" is the theme of this year's Religious Freedom Week of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The observance opens June 22, the feast day of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, both English martyrs who fought religious persecution. The week ends June 29, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, and includes the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, which is June 24.
Building on this year's annual report by the USCCB's Committee on Religious Liberty, Religious Freedom Week 2024 highlights concerns about attacks on houses of worship.
"There is no greater threat to religious liberty than for one's house of worship to become a place of danger, and the country sadly finds itself in a place where that danger is real," the committee said in its 48-page report, "The State of Religious Liberty in the United States," issued in January.
