Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

This coming week, we observe the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. John played an important role in our past, as the one who prepared the people for the coming of Jesus, baptizing them with water and urging them to repent for their sins. John was the son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, who was past the normal child bearing age when she became pregnant, as was the will of God.
All good Catholics know the historical importance of Saint John, but why is this Solemnity so important? Generally, saints are memorialized on the date of their death, that is, their new birth to eternal life. There are 2 exceptions to this (The Nativity of the Lord excluded) :
The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, December 8
The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, September 8
The Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, June 24.
Both John and Mary were conceived in miraculous ways. Mary, conceived without the stain of original sin through the intercession of the Holy Spirit, and John, born to a woman “who is called barren”, by the Grace of God in old age. Both births were only possible due to the will of God, and as such, are of great significance in our faith.
John’s death is also memorialized, with The Passion of Saint John being observed on August 29th. Thus, both John the Baptist and Mary (with the Solemnity of the Assumption) have both the beginning of their lives on earth and the start of their eternal lives in heaven observed as special days in our liturgical calendar. Mary, of course, has many more days dedicated to her, but John, due to his importance in the life of Jesus and of our faith, receives this special honor of both a Memorial and Solemnity to his name.
John was born in Beverly, York, England, the son of Robert and Mary Ann Fisher. His father died when he was very young, but his mother saw to it that John was well educated. From early on, John was recognized as a gifted student. He entered the University of Cambridge where he received his Master of Arts degree, and he was ordained a priest in 1491. Chosen as proctor of the university, John continued his studies earning the degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1501. In the same year, he was named vice chancellor of the university. Fisher’s reputation was widespread in England, particularly in intellectual circles. Lady Margaret, the Countess of Richmond and mother of King Henry VII, soon called him into service as her councilor. Already generous in her good works, Lady Margaret became more so under the influence of John Fisher. She gave alms to the needy, provided dowries for poor brides, distributed food, and provided shelter. In addition, John’s influence caused her to establish two colleges at Cambridge.
Also admired by the king, John was nominated by Henry VII to be the bishop of Rochester in 1504, and assumed this position at the age of thirty-five. In the same year, he was elected Chancellor of the University at Cambridge. As bishop, John Fisher visited every parish in his diocese and spent much of his time attending to the sick and overseeing the care of the poor under his charge. At the same time, as chancellor of the university, John Fisher was gaining world renown for his contributions to the intellectual world as well as his confutation of the heretical stands of Martin Luther. My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The gospel is filled with symbolism. The storm is a metaphor for the difficulties that beset us at every stage of life. The boat is an image of the church gathered---a suffering, persecuted, challenged Church. The gospel illustrates the care that we desire: that the storm be stilled, that we be delivered. The first reading illustrates what God offers us: that God is present at all times. How do we read this story, we who already know who Jesus is? The gospel challenges us to move beyond an understanding of Jesus as the one who is there when we need him (even though that is true) to the beckoning Light who brings us home to eternal life.
This past Spring has been quite beautiful. Lots of very green trees and plants. Lots of pollen on the cars and pools. Rain and some extreme heat. However, this year I noticed something new…at least for me. As summer begins we celebrate God’s gift of recreation so that we might be re-created and readied for continued spiritual, physical and social progress in our lives and in our community. During the coming weeks some of our parish music ministry personnel will be on holiday and there may be times when we sing a cappella. We will strive to cover our religious services with appropriate music. However, each of us can contribute to the faithful celebration of the liturgy by participating well in our prayer together. It is good for all of us to work hard, but it is equally good that we make time to be re-created. It is necessary for us to remember that we are essentially spiritual beings and not machines; therefore time for slowing down, smelling the roses and
renewing relationships can be vital to our own progress as disciples of the Lord Jesus.
During these last weeks of the fiscal year our staff is busy finishing up the details of administration and preparing for a new fiscal year. Preparations are proceeding nicely for the publication of our Annual Stewardship Report due out in October of this year. This is one of the ways in which the oversight of our parish is transparent to you the parishioner as stakeholders in the mission and ministry of our parish community. I thank all of you for your serious commitment to our parish so that we can fulfill our obligations and honor the commitments that have been made to compensate our co-workers, properly maintain our facilities and offering the very best opportunities for worship, outreach, ministry and spiritual growth.
Later this year, Sunday 24 November at the 12 noon mass, we will celebrate with Monsignor Troiano the 45th anniversary of Priestly Ordination. Please make a note in your personal diary. There will be a simple reception following the Mass of Thanksgiving. More information to come as the time draws near. Let us pray for all priests and vocations to the Priesthood…especially in our Diocese of Trenton.
Stay vigilant these days. Make sure to hydrate. Avoid exposure to the excessive heat. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

WASHINGTON – "Called to the Fullness of Dignity" is the theme of this year's Religious Freedom Week of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The observance opens June 22, the feast day of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, both English martyrs who fought religious persecution. The week ends June 29, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, and includes the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, which is June 24.
Building on this year's annual report by the USCCB's Committee on Religious Liberty, Religious Freedom Week 2024 highlights concerns about attacks on houses of worship.
"There is no greater threat to religious liberty than for one's house of worship to become a place of danger, and the country sadly finds itself in a place where that danger is real," the committee said in its 48-page report, "The State of Religious Liberty in the United States," issued in January.
