FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:
Question for Children: Have you ever had to walk in the dark with no light? How is that like walking by faith and not by sight? What did you have to do to keep going in the dark?
Question for Youth: Do you pray and ask for faith? How do you work on building your faith?
Question for Adults: When do you find it hardest to have faith? Must you “see” answered prayer, or can you peacefully accept God’s will?
The Sanctuary Lamps this week are burning for:
Chapel: Agrippino Culosi
Church: Nick Pellicone
Requested by Pellicone Family
Consider donating the sanctuary lamp that burns in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the Church or Chapel in honor of a living or deceased loved one. One intention is accepted per week (Sunday - Saturday) for the Lamp.

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care.

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

This solemnity, one of the later ones to enter in the liturgical calendar, is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost, or 5 days after Corpus Christi; therefore, always on a Friday. Due to the moveable date of Easter, this celebration can occur anyway from late May to early July, although it most often falls during June. Thus, the month of June is also dedicated to the Sacred Heart.
The devotion to the Sacred Heart, more specifically to the love of God as symbolized by the heart of Jesus, has been practiced by many and can be traced back as a communal practice to the 11th century and back even further in the private devotions of the early church fathers, such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Ambrose.
Although not a holy day of obligation, it is an obligatory day for the church, meaning that the solemnity will supplant whatever other memorial may normally occur on that day in the calendar. Like a Sunday, it has 3 sets of readings, one for each Sunday cycle of the liturgical year. It also serves as a special day of prayer for the sanctification of priests; as such, all are encouraged to pray especially for priests, that they may continue to live holy lives, and serve well the Lord and his faithful on earth, as well as for vocations to priestly ministry.
The image of the sacred heart is that of a human heart, crowned with flame, surrounded by thorns, a cross rising from the top, pierced with a lance and bleeding. This symbolized Christ’s suffering at Calvary, but also his triumph over death and the power of his love. Statuary often depicts Jesus with his arms outstretched and the heart in front of the chest, or pointing to his heart, calling attention to his love and redeeming grace.

Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor, 1195-1231

Born Ferdinand de Bulhoes in Lisbon, Portugal, Anthony was the son of a knight in King Alphonso’s court. He began his studies at the cathedral in Lisbon and joined the Augustinians when he was fifteen. Ordained in about 1219, Anthony transferred to the Franciscans in 1221 at which time he took the name Anthony.
Sent to Morocco to preach to the Moors, Anthony was soon forced to return because of illness. He was stationed at a small hermitage in Italy, where he spent his time studying Scripture, praying, and doing menial tasks. Once, at an ordination when no one was prepared to speak, Father Anthony hesitantlyRead more HERE

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. We can be dog tired from a long day’s work and only want to go home, put our feet up, relax, and not be bothered. Instead we go to choir practice or visit an elderly parent or spend some time helping the youngsters with homework, and we actually seem to get a second wind! It’s amazing how service of others actually gives back energy! This is something of an experience dying and rising our service takes effort and energy (dying to self) but then we receive back much more (gaining new life). Even in the call to service the Shepherd is taking care of his people!
Many thanks to all those who helped celebrate Father Mike’s 50th Anniversary. It was a fitting celebration of mass and a simple reception for a faithful priest of our Diocese of Trenton. Fr. Mike has returned to Ireland for several weeks. Thanks to Andrew for the mass preparations and Carly, Chris and their helpers for the reception. The celebration of Saint Anthony of Padua was beautiful with nearly one hundred people in attendance for mass. Each year the participation grows. I am grateful to Grace for keeping this custom in her home and in our parish chapel.
This weekend, the civic community observes “Father’s Day”. As Catholic Christians this is a time for us to reflect on the very gift of life that is given to us from fatherhood. This is not merely about the act of conception, but the very real vocation of men to participate actively in the parenting of children. Thus, father’s have a role that cannot be replaced in helping their children, grandchildren, etc…to develop a consciousness about right and wrong in daily living. This fundamental formation is something that is not learned at the computer or in front of the TV, or even in the classroom. All of those circumstances can re-enforce virtue and values that are witnessed by role models. Today we honor and thank these men for their courage and their steadfastness in struggling to live according to their values and beliefs. Let us pray for a continued and heightened awareness of the dignity of God’s gift of human life.
This week Summer officially begins. We encounter the longest day of the year. Let us make time to enjoy these beautiful days. We continue to make slow and steady progress in the ACA 2023. Please consider making a gift to help us reach our goal. Let us continue to pray for one another. Have a great week. Happy Sunday. Peace.
