Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Question for Children: Have you ever had to walk in the dark with no light? How is that like walking by faith and not by sight? What did you have to do to keep going in the dark?
Question for Youth: Do you pray and ask for faith? How do you work on building your faith?
Question for Adults: When do you find it hardest to have faith? Must you “see” answered prayer, or can you peacefully accept God’s will?

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Saint Anthony of Padua
was a Franciscan who lived from 1195-1231, spending the latter years of his life in Italy. He was a profound preacher and teacher, one of the greatest of his time, as well as an advocate for the poor and needy. Following his death, in May 1232, less than a year after his death, Pope Gregory IX canonized Saint Anthony, and in 1946, Venerable Pope Pius XII proclaimed Saint Anthony a Doctor of the Church, due to the latter’s profound spiritual teachings, from his collected sermons.
Saint Anthony is the patron saint of lost things. This stems from a story that while Saint Anthony was in Bologna, a novice decided to leave the order and took one of Saint Anthony’s cherished books of psalms with him. Anthony prayed for the book to be found, and the novice returned both the book, and his commitment to the order.
There is, in some places, the tradition of the blessing and distribution of bread on his feast day, June 13. One possible reason for the institution of this custom is a 13th century story about a woman whose daughter had fallen into a well and presumed drowned. She begged Saint Anthony for the life of her child and promised her weight in grain should she be found alive. The child arose, as if merely sleeping.
Today, the bread reminds of us of the charity of Saint Anthony. In other places, money that is collected for the poor and needy is referred to as Saint Anthony’s bread, from the colloquial terms “bread, or dough” for money.
Born Ferdinand de Bulhoes in Lisbon, Portugal, Anthony was the son of a knight in King Alphonso’s court. He began his studies at the cathedral in Lisbon and joined the Augustinians when he was fifteen. Ordained in about 1219, Anthony transferred to the Franciscans in 1221 at which time he took the name Anthony. Sent to Morocco to preach to the Moors, Anthony was soon forced to return because of illness. He was stationed at a small hermitage in Italy, where he spent his time studying Scripture, praying, and doing menial tasks. Once, at an ordination when no one was prepared to speak, Father Anthony hesitantly accepted the task. His fellow Franciscans, expecting little from Anthony, were astounded by his sermon and Anthony began a new ministry as a preacher.
Anthony was assigned to preach throughout Italy. Noted for his eloquence, fire, and persuasiveness, he attracted large crowds wherever he spoke and was particularly successful at converting heretics. Recognized as a great scholar, Anthony became the first Franciscan friar to teach theology to other Franciscan friars.
Appointed minister provincial of the Franciscan order, Anthony, was released from these duties in 1226 in order to resume his preaching. He settled in Padua in that year and his bold and brilliant preaching completely reformed the city. He worked to abolish debtors’ prisons, helped the poor, and worked ceaselessly and untiringly with heretics. All of this took its toll on Anthony’s health and he died on June 13 at the age of 36. My Dear Parishioners:
My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Kingdom of God is rooted in the activity of the sower who sows the seed. This is a reference to Jesus and his public ministry. The parable of the seed growing by itself places God at the center. The soil and the seed do their mysterious work. The seed germinates and grows day and night. However, the sower must continue to cultivate the soil making sure that weeds do not overcome the fragile sprouts. The sower nurtures the seeds. Jesus speaks in parables so that his audience can understand the teaching, not immediately, but in time after reflection. Parables are not simple stories as they might first appear. Parables are intended to open us up to God’s plan for us. Jesus uses parables to reveal himself to the disciples. Parables challenge us to rediscover that which has already been revealed to us through our prayer, formation and life experience. Therefore, we must believe in the hidden potential of the smallest of seeds (God’s Word) which can grow beyond all hope.
This weekend our country honors those who embrace the noble vocation of parenting as “Fathers”. What an important role in our society and in our Church. We believe that the Family is the “Domestic Church” of the home.
Let us pray for all those who embrace their vocation as fathers. These role models are so very important to our children and young people. One of the chief responsibilities of fathers is passing on the faith and witnessing to our faith through their personal choices. Congratulations.
During the Month of June the Universal Church reflects on the image of Jesus Christ as the Sacred Heart. This image challenges us in how we receive and offer mercy and forgiveness in our lives. Our world greatly needs authenticity when it comes to mercy and forgiveness.
We have reached our 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal Goal! Congratulations. I am grateful to those who have made their gift as well as those who have made a pledge. Whatever gifts are made from now forward our parish receive 50% rebate. This rebate money is restricted toward the continuous updating of all interior and exterior light fixtures. Thank you for your generous sharing.
Take some time to enjoy these beautiful late spring days. Have a great week. Let us pray for one another. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
