SAINTS JOACHIM AND ANNE

Memorial July 26

In the Scriptures, Matthew and Luke furnish a legal family history of Jesus, tracing ancestry to show that Jesus is the culmination of great promises, tracing his lineage through the throne of David, etc.. However, much of Mary’s history is glanced over except for her encounter with her cousin Elizabeth: we also know nothing factual about her parents them except that they existed. Even the names “Joachim” and “Anne” come from a legendary source written more than a century after Jesus died.

The heroism and holiness of these people however, is inferred from the whole family atmosphere around Mary in the Scriptures. Whether we rely on the legends about Mary’s childhood or make guesses from the information in the Bible, we see in her a fulfillment of many generations of prayerful persons, herself steeped in the religious traditions of her people.

The strong character of Mary in making decisions, her continuous practice of prayer, her devotion to the laws of her faith, her steadiness at moments of crisis, and her devotion to her relatives—all indicate a close-knit, loving family that looked forward to the next generation even while retaining the best of the past.

Saints Joachim and Anne are the patrons of grandparents. As such, this Sunday (the fourth Sunday in July - closest to the memorial) has been designated as the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly by Pope Francis - a day to honor the aged among us as gifts to the Church and to our greater society.

Saint Anne is the patroness of women in labor and patroness of the nation of Canada.

James the Greater, Apostle, First Century

This James is called “the Greater” because his vocation to serve Jesus preceded that of the other apostle with the same name. James the Greater was the brother of John and the son of Zebedee. One tradition, derived from the information in several of the Gospels, tells us that James and John were first cousins of Jesus. With his brother, James was a fisherman working in his father’s business until called by Jesus.

Neither James nor John fully understood at first what they were being called to do. Matthew tells us that their mother asked Jesus to give James and John the places of honor, one at his left hand, the other at his right hand, when his kingdom was established (Mt. 20:20-21). We can assume that James was held in high esteem by Jesus. He, John, and Peter were the only apostles present for the raising from the dead of Jairus’ daughter, as well as the Transfiguration of Jesus, and these three were in the garden of Gethsemane with Jesus.

James and John were noted for their hot temperament, which was probably the basis for the nickname “sons of thunder” (Mk 3:17), which Jesus gave them. One story illustrates that temperament well. When Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he and his disciples passed through a Samaritan town. (The animosity between the Samaritans and the Jews at that time were roughly equivalent to that between the Jews and Palestinians today.) When the Samaritans learned that Jesus’ destination was Jerusalem, a city hated by the Samaritans, they refused to house him and the disciples. James and John, still not fully understanding Jesus’ mission, asked him, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them? Jesus turned and rebuked them....” (Lk 9:5455)...Read More HERE.

July VIRTUAL Summer Intensive has been completed and was a success! We can’t thank the RE parents, students, catechists and assistants enough for helping to make it such a great experience. This year, the classes participated in different theme days such as God Bless America, Easter in July and Favorite Saint Day. Learning prayers and going over the catechism-it was a great two weeks as we planted the foundations of faith in these young hearts and minds.

We will be celebrating The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly this Sunday 28 July beginning with 10am mass- following with a continental breakfast and presentation on St. Anne and St. Joachim, Jesus’ grandparents. Many thanks to all who signed up to help out. We look forward to a great event! “

Mission Co-Op 2024

August 10 & 11

This year’s Mission Co-Op Appeal will be taken up at the weekend Masses of August 10/11. We are happy to welcome to our parish a member of the Religious Teachers Filippini, Sister Ella Mae McDonald, MPF. The Religious Teachers Filippini have served in the Diocese of Trenton since 1910 and have international missions in Ethiopia, Eritrea, India, Albania, and Brazil. In these countries, the Sisters operate schools, nurseries, clinics, skill-training programs for women, minister to AIDS orphans, and work to meet other spiritual and human needs. These missionary endeavors are a tangible expression of the congregation’s motto, “Go and Teach the Word of God.” The international missions depend on the generosity of donors. Thank you in advance for whatever you are able to contribute to the fulfillment of their mission.

Quo vadis...

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. This gospel account is far more than an interesting “super size” story; it primes us to ponder the great mystery of Jesus himself as the Bread of Life (which we will hear about on subsequent Sundays) and his self-giving that enables us to share in it. The challenge for us is far more than believing in Jesus’ self-giving as a sign of fulfillment and promise of eschatological glory that we share even now. We Christians are to see our lives through the lens of God’s lavish abundance. Do we?

This weekend, in conjunction with the 26 July liturgical observance of Saints Joachim and Anne, the universal church celebrates the role of grandparents in the life of the family. Our parish welcomes those grandparents who join us at mass and for an intergenerational formation session. May we continue to reverence and value the presence and lived experience of our grand parents and those senior members of our community.

This weekend is also a time when we show our gratitude to the senior, retired and informed priests of our Diocese of Trenton. As the number of diocesan priests who are retiring increases the cost of caring for them is increasing. Additionally, there have been a few who have received permission to retire ahead of schedule due to health concerns. The presence of our retired diocesan priests is very important to the sacramental service our parishes offer to the People of God.

Thank you for your continued generosity in support of our retired and informed diocesan priests.

The past two weeks we held our July Summer Religious Education Intensive Virtual Session. I have heard positive comments from some participants. Our Parish RE Staff has expressed gratitude for the collaboration with parents and families. The catechists are mostly certified teachers from catholic schools throughout our Diocese of Trenton. In addition to being certified teachers they are also certified catechists, that is teachers of religion, and fully compliant with our Safe Environment Standards. We continue to make slow and steady progress in providing the very best for our parishioner families. We can and do make a difference when what we teach is also witnessed at home, especially participating regularly in Sunday Mass. The August Session will be in person on campus. Let us pray for our catechists, students and their parents.

Next Sunday there will be a new parishioner orientation session. We have about 30 or so households who need to participate in this so they their census registration can move toward being fully processed. This is a good time to register in our parish if you recently moved into town Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday.

Peace. Father Jeff

Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., is again inviting parishioners in the Diocese of Trenton to support the second annual collection for the Retired, Elderly and Infirm Priests Fund scheduled for Masses July 27 and 28. The collection is part of the diocesan observance of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly established three years ago by Pope Francis to be held on or near the Feast of Jesus’ own grandparents, Saints Joachim and Anne. The collection, which will be taken in all Catholic churches across Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties, will be used to help fund the needs of the retired and elderly priests of the Diocese whose numbers have now reached 85.

We will have a collection box for this appeal at the masses on July 27 & 28. Please be generous.
