Question for Youth: Jesus was moved with pity for the people who were gathered. Who are the people you are moved with pity for? What can you do to help them?

One of the few named women in the Bible, Mary Magdalene was a disciple of Jesus, one of his closest. In Luke’s Gospel, we are told that “Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out…” (Luke 8:2). In all of the Gospels, she is present at the crucifixion and the first to witness the miracle of the resurrection. In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells Mary, “Go to my brothers and tell them: I am going to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God” (John 20:17), after which she announces to the remaining apostles that she has seen the risen Lord. She is the apostle that Jesus sent to tell the others, leading to Pope Francis calling her the “apostle to the apostles” and she has remained a model of faith. Her feast day is July 22. She is the patron saint of women and of repentant sinners .
Ignatius Loyola, Priest, 1491-1556
Ignatius was the youngest of thirteen children of a noble family in the Basque region of Spain. He entered the military service and had a promising career ahead of him until he was wounded during the siege of Pamplona in 1521.
During his long recovery, Ignatius spent the time reading religious books, as there was nothing else available to him. These readings included a life of Christ and the lives of saints, both of which had a profound effect on him. After his recovery, he made a pilgrimage to Monserrat where he hung up his sword at Our Lord's altar. He then spent a year in retreat at Manresa where he experienced visions and began writing his Spiritual Exercises.
From 1524 to 1535, Ignatius studied in Paris and received a Master of Arts degree in 1534. In that same year, along with a group of fellow students who included St. Francis Xavier, he founded the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). The group vowed to live in poverty and chastity and to go to the Holy Land. Because of the hostility of the Turks, however, they were unable to achieve this last goal, so they went instead to Rome and placed themselves in the apostolic service of the Pope. The Society was formally approved in 1540 by Pope Paul III. The group took their final vows in 1541 and Ignatius Loyola was named the superior general of the order. Read More HERE.

What an exciting first week of our Religious Education July VIRTUAL summer program! Many thanks to all the RE families and RE catechists, as well as our catechist assistants. The program is running smoothly and the children continue to build that foundation of faith… Our Blessing Mass last weekend was a beautiful way to kick off the 10 day program!

The World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly will be celebrated on Sunday 28 July - the Sunday closest to the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, Grandparents of Jesus The theme, chosen by Pope Francis for this year's celebration, is "Do not cast me off in my old age" ( Psalm 71:9)

Quo vadis
Today we celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We all need to go off to a “deserted place” occasionally to “rest a while.” Whether this means taking some time alone each day to pray and rest in God, making Sunday truly a day of rest, or setting aside a few days a year to make a retreat, all of us need time to regain our strength so we can take up our own shepherding tasks. If the mission overwhelms us we will be unable to persevere. Achieving a balance between the work of discipleship and the need to rest from weariness can be no easy task in itself. Like Jesus, we are called to shepherd—to care, teach, heal, listen, etc. and, also like Jesus, we are called to make our life one characterized by self-giving. Somehow we are to balance this with rest, with time to replenish our spirit and energy. Selfgiving and rest are two parallel poles to the dying and rising dynamic of the paschal mystery. Too much dying can crush us. Too much rest can lull us into being uncaring shepherds. Gospel living faithful to the mission Jesus has given us requires that we balance contemplation and action. In other words, the mission itself includes downtime. This is how we have fresh encounters with the Jesus who cares—by taking time to rest in him. Let him shepherd us.
We are midpoint of the first module for our RE Summer Intensive Program. We are receiving many positive comments from students and their families. Our ability to offer so many options is a result of those families who generously support our parish community. I commend our Faith Formation/Religious Educa
tion staff for their dedicated service. Sharing faith in the home and here at Sunday Mass is critical for the growth of our Catholic Community.
Next weekend, as the Universal Church observes the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, we will welcome families for a special intergenerational activity with grand parents and children. This is an important opportunity to encourage children and grandparents to talk about and learn about our Catholic Faith. Additionally there will. E the annual collection in support of the retired priests who have, and in many cases continue to, serve in our Diocese of Trenton. Thank you for generously supporting this effort
We will be welcoming Sister Ella Mae McDonald, MPF who will be offering the reflection at each of the four masses during the weekend of 10/11 August. This is part of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith Mission Cooperative. This is one way in which we can participate directly in the Church’s Missionary activity. We will have a drop box in the church for your monetary support. Consult another part of the parish electronic bulletin for how you may contribute through your online giving account. Thank you for your generous stewardship. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., is again inviting parishioners in the Diocese of Trenton to support the second annual collection for the Retired, Elderly and Infirm Priests Fund scheduled for Masses July 27 and 28. The collection is part of the diocesan observance of World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly established three years ago by Pope Francis to be held on or near the Feast of Jesus’ own grandparents, Saints Joachim and Anne. The collection, which will be taken in all Catholic churches across Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties, will be used to help fund the needs of the retired and elderly priests of the Diocese whose numbers have now reached 85.
We will have a collection box for this appeal at the masses on July 27 & 28. Please be generous.
