FOR DEEPER REFLECTION:

Question for Children: To whom would you announce the Good News about Jesus? Who do you think most needs to hear this message?

Question for Youth: When Jesus sent the disciples out, he was preparing them for the future when he would be gone. How are you growing in your own faith and preparing for a life as a Christian disciple?

Question for Adults: Why do you think Jesus sent them out two by two, rather than alone?

Saint Benedict, Abbot

Saint Benedict (ca480-542) is considered the father of monasticism in the Catholic church. Monasticism has had a long lineage in Christian life, going back to its founding in Egypt in the 4th century AD, which we have learned of from the writings of the desert fathers such as Saint Anthony of Egypt. The monastic life was one of heroic virtue, with some monks practicing long fasts and other ascetic practices, which led to their admiration by their followers. St. Benedict, however, was of a more practical mind. He wanted to create a model of monastic life that would make it possible for ordinary men to follow every day. He also wanted to create a community - with the abbot as the father guiding the monks in the daily practice of work and prayer.

St. Benedict summed up his ideals in the Rule of St Benedict which became one of the foundation documents of Western Christianity. In its 73 chapters, it lays out how an individual monk may live each day with his mind on Christ as he works and prays. The Rule also covers the duties of the abbot running the monastery as a father, leading the community to live in harmony with God and one another. This would be the basis on which centuries of monastic life would flourish and give to Western Christianity a model of stability on which Western culture could grow.

Saint Benedict is the patron saint of European civilization and of students. His feast day is July 11th.

Clelia Barbieri, 1847-1870

Clelia Barbieri has the distinction of being the youngest founder of a religious community in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.

Clelia was born on February 13th, 1847, in Budrie, a small village on the outskirts of Bologna, Italy. Interestingly, her father, Giuseppe, came from the poorest family in the village, while her mother, Giacinta, came from the most powerful family. As might be expected, Giacinta’s family strongly opposed the marriage, but the girl persisted and, after the wedding, moved into the Barbieri family home.

The strong faith of her mother and father was passed on to Clelia. As a young girl, Clelia asked her mother, “How can I become a saint?” Though well on her way to sainthood even at an early age, Clelia also learned weaving and sewing and, thus, helped to support her family.

When Clelia was eight years old, her father died in a cholera epidemic. Her uncle, the town doctor, invited her mother, Clelia, and a younger sister to live in a comfortable house near the parish church. Clelia began to spend much of her time in the church praying. But Clelia did not neglect her sense of duty to her family. She continued to work at weaving with the young girls of Budrie and became recognized as a leader among them. Read More HERE.

Quo vadis

My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our own lives and times we carry much baggage on our journey as disciples of Jesus. We have closets full of clothes, pantries and refrigerators full of food: many of us are armed with college degrees. The practical instructions of Jesus to his Twelve would not serve us well today; it would be irresponsible to divest ourselves of all our possessions. At the same time this gospel does invite us to examine what it is that hinders us from fulfilling the mission on which Jesus sends all of us, beginning with our baptism. Each of us is a disciple who is sent. What distracts us from our mission? For most of us the greatest distractions probably don’t come from our possessions but from our interior emotions and attitudes. We don’t like rejection—so it is difficult to preach an unpopular gospel with its demands for righteousness and love. We don’t like the risk of being unsuccessful—so it is easier to live our religion by saying prayers rather than by ceaseless self-giving. We don’t like pushing our own faith to its limits so it is easier to be more concerned with right doctrine than with right living. In spite of our excuses and human weakness, Jesus is clear: “Go…to my people” (first reading). We must keep moving forward with his mission.

This weekend we welcome those families who are participating in the July two-week Summer Intensive Religious Education Program. The July Session is being offered virtually for the convenience of our parish families. We have Catholic School Teachers who are certified teachers, certified teachers of religion and fully compliant with safe environment standards. We are grateful to them for their willingness to assist

us in preparing our young people to live as Roman Catholics in our world. Thanks to our Parish Faith Formation/Religious Education team. Let us pray for these students, their families and our catechists.

Last week a priest friend of mine shared an awesome experience and I want to share with you. In the state of Indiana there has been school choice opportunities in place for 12 or so years. Each year it has been expanded to make eligible more and more families. This has had a tremendous impact on the quality of life as well as taxation that supports school education. Recently, an individual family acting through their own foundation announced a gift of $150,000,000.00 in support of Catholic School Education within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Gary, IN. This generous gift will forever change the lives of children and families. What an awesome Catholic Philanthropic act to continue the work of Catholic School Education.

We have recently completed another patching of our parking lot. These patches are intended to help us get to the point when we can address some of the causes of this rot and the potholes that emerge. Thank you for your support and patience. Work will also commence to address some of the erosion between the sidewalk concrete and the Belgian block curbing. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
