Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord & Memorial of Saint Blaise

February 2nd, also known as Candlemas Day, has been celebrated since the 4th century. This feast commemorates the 40th day after Christmas, when Mary travelled with Jesus and Joseph to the temple in Jerusalem, for her ritual purification after the birth of the Lord. It was in the temple that the prophetess Anna and Simeon the Righteous recognized the child as the Messiah. Simeon, who had been told by the Holy Spirit that he shall not see death until he sees the Christ, praises God in the Nunc Dimittis: “Now let your servant go in peace I have seen your salvation….a light to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel”.
In honoring the revelation of Jesus as the light of the world, it is customary for candles to be blessed on this day. In some cultures, the faithful bring candles from their homes to blessed, but more commonly it is candles that will be used in the life of the church
in the coming year that are blessed. In our community, we bless the candles that are used for the blessing of throats on the memorial of Saint Blaise (February 3) and the six candles that will flank the altar beginning at Easter. At the conclusion of the Easter Season, these candles are kept separate from others, used as processional candles, and eventually burned in the holy fire at the Easter Vigil the following year. We also invite the faithful to bring candles for home use to be blessed.
Traditionally, Candlemas marked the end of the Christmas Season, and decorations where often left up until the Eve of Candlemas. In our parish, we keep that custom in a way, continuing the care of the poinsettias that have been placed in the church until this day.
These two celebrations will be held in the Parish Hall chapel, at 9am, on their respective days. Please bring candles to be blessed on February 2nd. Blessing of the throats will occur following the Mass on February 3rd.
Saint of the Week:
Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, c. early 4th Century
Bishop Blaise (sometimes spelled Blase) was martyred around 316 by order of Governor Agricolaus in Sebastea, Armenia, during Licinius' persecution of Christians. That is the only certain knowledge that we have about this saint.

VALENTINE’S DAY COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT 2023
Once again, residents of Monmouth County will have the opportunity to provide Valentine’s Day cards, notes, letters, and special treats for our military members at Earle Naval Base, Joint Base McGuireDix-Lakehurst Air Force Base along with Veteran facilities in New Jersey. Last year we collected over 5,000 Valentine messages for our beloved military members!

Cards may be handmade or purchased but should include a handwritten sentiment acknowledging the love and appreciation for their military service to our country. Each group of cards and treats should be bundled in a Ziploc type bag and handed in to the parish office to obtain a service hour letter. Service hour letter must be picked up at time of Valentine drop off.
Here are some examples of sentiments students can write inside the cards.
“Happy Valentine’s day to a true patriot”
“Happy Valentine’s day to a real hero”
“The commitment you’ve made means so much and is so appreciated.”
“Thank you for your service to our country and its citizens.”
“Sincere thanks for the big sacrifices you’ve made for our nation.”
“You deserve thanks every day for your service.”
“You made the choice to defend our country, and you deserve our deepest gratitude.”
Dear Sailor or Marine is acceptable (not soldier) Students may drop cards off at the parish office during operating hours.
Project end date is February 5.
Project is sponsored by Catherine J. Sas c/o Luther Memorial Church, Tinton Falls, NJ/Earle Naval Basein conjunction with Chaplin Joseph Pinzl and Pastor Jace Detrie
10 homemade cards will equal 1 hour of community service: (for 7 & 8 grade only)
All Valentines will be due by February 5th

In an effort to support pregnant women and young families in need, the parishes of the Diocese of Trenton are strongly encouraged to participate in the USCCB’s initiative, Walking With Moms in Need (WWMN).

Walking with Moms in Need is an initiative through which Catholic parishes and communities "walk in the shoes" of local pregnant and parenting women in need. Everyone should know how to help moms in difficult circumstances.
While not trying to turn Catholic parishes into pregnancy centers, we can support local pregnancy centers where they exist, and we can also find and share other resources with pregnant and parenting women.

My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. It is awesome to think that our own puny efforts at mercy, justice, and righteous living are one means for bringing God’s blessedness to others! Simply sharing in God’s work of salvation—providing for those in need—is a blessing in itself. We can afford to jump in and get our feet wet because we are not only dependent upon our own resources but share with others what God has already provided for us. Here’s the truly amazing part: the blessedness we share now is but a taste of our great reward in heaven!
This week we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas Day). It is customary that we bless candles as a reminder that Christ is the Light of the World. The following day is the optional memorial of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr. Throats will be blessed during the regularly scheduled masses. “Through the intercession of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr, may Almighty God deliver you from every disease of the throat and every other illness, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” During the month of February we also celebrate Valentine’s Day and we observe World Marriage Sunday. Let us pray for all married couples and for those who are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony throughout the world and especially here in our parish.
Early Registration for our Summer Intensive Religious Education Program begins in February. This program has become very popular with the students and parents alike. There is limited enrollment space in each session. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. The website will be up as indicated in the bulletin. Please follow all of the prompts in order to complete the registration process. A confirmation letter will be forwarded for your records. Thank you for you diligence in providing for the needs of your family in a timely manner. Remember, we have limited space for each session… DO NOT PROCRASTINATE... REGISTER THIS WEEK.
The 2023 Annual Catholic Appeal will kick off during the month of February. This initiative enables our Diocesan Bishop of Trenton to maintain critical ministries and services. I am grateful to all of those who participated last year. We have included a list acknowledging those families who have make sacrificial gifts to this important annual appeal. I encourage you to participate this year. Remember, I would never ask you to participate in something I would not participate…I will make my personal gift as I ask you to do the same.
Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff.
