Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord & Memorial of Saint Blaise
Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org
February 2nd, also known as Candlemas Day, has been celebrated since the 4th century. This feast commemorates the 40th day after Christmas, when Mary travelled with Jesus and Joseph to the temple in Jerusalem, for her ritual purification after the birth of the Lord. It was in the temple that the prophetess Anna and Simeon the Righteous recognized the child as the Messiah. Simeon, who had been told by the Holy Spirit that he shall not see death until he sees the Christ, praises God in the Nunc Dimittis: “Now let your servant go in peace…I have seen your salvation….a light to the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel”.
In honoring the revelation of Jesus as the light of the world, it is customary for candles to be blessed on this day. In some cultures, the faithful bring candles from their homes to blessed, but more commonly it is candles that will be used in the life of the church in the coming year that are blessed. In our community, we bless the candles that are used for the blessing of throats on the memorial of Saint Blaise (February 3) and the six candles that will flank the altar beginning at Easter. At the conclusion of the Easter Season, these candles are kept separate from others, used as processional candles, and eventually burned in the holy fire at the Easter Vigil the following year. We also invite the faithful to bring candles for home use to be blessed. Traditionally, Candlemas marked the end of the Christmas Season, and decorations where often left up until the Eve of Candlemas. In our parish, we keep that custom in a way, continuing the care of the poinsettias that have been placed in the church until this day.
If you have devotional candles from home that you wish to have blest, please bring them to the 12 NOON Mass on February 2nd.
Following that Mass, we will have exposition of the blessed sacrament until 3pm. Blessing of the throats will occur following the Mass on February 3rd, 9am in the chapel.
Titus, Bishop, First Century
Titus was a Greek and a close friend of St. Paul who apparently converted him to Christianity. In Titus 1:4, St. Paul called Titus “my true child in our common faith.” Our knowledge of him comes from the letters of Paul to Titus and to the Corinthians. Titus accompanied St. Paul on his third missionary journey and acted as Paul’s secretary at the council in Jerusalem.
Titus served as a mediator for Paul on several missions. Paul sent Titus to Corinth to correct errors and smooth out dissension which had arisen there. He was received by the Corinthians with great respect, and interceded with Paul on their behalf. Titus returned to Corinth a second time at Paul’s direction to collect alms for the poor.
After preaching in Crete, Paul moved on, consecrating Titus and leaving him to serve as the first bishop.

This is the practice of having children, ages 4-12, leave the Sunday assembly during the Liturgy of the Word (readings) and gather in a separate environment to engage in the Liturgy of the Word at a level more appropriate to the children’s understanding.

National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2025 is January 26 – February 1. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2025 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. The Parish of St. Mary supports Catholic Schools in our diocese through a yearly co-sponsorship contribution.
My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. Living the paschal mystery means that we continually look for the poor, captive, blind, and oppressed among us. We don’t have to look very far! “Today this passage has been fulfilled” is now true only when we ourselves respond to those around us who need a nourishing, strengthening, joyful word. This means that God’s word isn’t something we only hear on Sunday, but becomes a living word in our hearts, inspiring us to be in our very selves living gospels. As we gradually grow into being anointed by the Spirit, we like Jesus are the fulfillment of the Scriptures.
Next weekend we will issue the 2024 Christmas Collection report. We will be receiving gifts through 29 January. This is an important part of our financial stability. Many thanks to all who have participated and support us in our mission.
Next Sunday, February 2nd we will bless candles during the 12:00 noon mass in the church to be used for the Sacred Liturgy celebrated in our parish. Those wishing to bring candles from their homes to be blessed are encouraged to do so. Each year 3 February is the optional memorial day of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr. It is customary that the faithful come to the church to have their throats blessed. We will bless throats at the conclusion of the 9:00am daily mass on Monday, 3 February in the chapel. I encourage you to keep this
wonderful custom by prayerfully participating in the celebration of Eucharist.
The Season of Lent begins in mid March this year. Start thinking now about how you might enter into this time of prayer and penance. Make time for some private prayer and devotion. Consider celebrating the Eucharist more frequently by participating in daily mass celebrated in the Chapel. The Way of the Cross is another opportunity for meditation on the Lord’s Passion and Death. We make available various reflections on the Way of the Cross in our chapel for private devotion. Please mark your calendar for Sunday, 6 April at 3:00pm in order to participate in our Parish Lenten Penance & Reconciliation/Confessions. We will have 13 or so priest confessors for your convenience. I kindly ask that you try to adhere to the suggested times based on last names. This past Advent we had a great turnout; however, there were more than 100 people at 3:00pm which defeated the purpose of trying to accommodate with minimal wait times. All I can do is suggest and encourage. Our parish staff members and liturgical leaders will be reaching out to parishioners for participation in the Liturgies of Holy Week, The Triduum and Easter during the month of march. Please be open to participating so that we might continue to include as many parishioners as possible.
Have a great week. Let us remember one another in payer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
