Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Question for Youth: As you grow into young adulthood, Jesus calls you to follow him in particular ways, both big and small. What are some of the small ways in which Jesus calls you to follow him?
Question for Adults: How does Jesus call you to assist in his ministry: the building up of the Reign of God? How do you know what God wants of you in this regard?

Word of God Sunday
On September 30, 2019 Pope Francis issued a motu proprio declaring that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time is to be the Sunday of the Word of God, dedicated to the celebration, reflection and dissemination of the Word. What does this mean for Catholics? A few key points are outlined below with suggestions for reflection.
Through the lectionary readings, God speaks to his people in both the Old Testament (the Hebrew Scriptures) and the New (the Christian Scriptures), with the Gospels holding the highest place in the Liturgy of the Word. Reflect upon how the readings connect with one another. The singing of the psalm is the response of the Church at prayer. Listen to the text of the verses and sing the antiphon with confidence.
The ambo, from which the readings are proclaimed, is of significance and importance in the church building. It is not merely a stand from which announcements are read, but a special place from which the Word of God is proclaimed to the faithful. Some churches have a smaller lectern for the purposes of proclaiming the 1st reading, psalm and epistle, with a grander ambo for the proclamation of the Gospel.
If you already take part in the Liturgy of the Hours, take some time to reflect on the significance of scripture in these daily activities, not merely going through the motions or reading for the sake of reading. If you do not regularly pray any of the hours, consider beginning the practice, either this week or perhaps as a part of your Lenten journey.
Take this Sunday and other days throughout the next few weeks to reflect on the Word of God that you hear proclaimed at Mass, and remember that as Catholics we celebrate our faith with both Word and Eucharist.
Saint of the Week:
Angela Merici, Religious and Virgin, 1470-1540
Angela Merici was orphaned at the age of ten and, together with an older sister and a younger brother, was raised by an uncle. As a teenager, Angela became a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and lived a life of great austerity. She gave up all her possessions and lived almost entirely on bread and water. *GRADES 1 - 8* VALENTINE’S DAY COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT 2023
Once again, residents of Monmouth County will have the opportunity to provide Valentine’s Day cards, notes, letters, and special treats for our military members at Earle Naval Base, Joint Base McGuireDix-Lakehurst Air Force Base along with Veteran facilities in New Jersey. Last year we collected over 5,000 Valentine messages for our beloved military members!
Cards may be handmade or purchased but should include a handwritten sentiment acknowledging the love and appreciation for their military service to our country. Each group of cards and treats should be bundled in a Ziploc type bag and handed in to the parish office to obtain a service hour letter.
Service hour letter must be picked up at time of Valentine drop off.
Here are some examples of sentiments students can write inside the cards.
“Happy Valentine’s day to a true patriot”
“Happy Valentine’s day to a real hero”
“The commitment you’ve made means so much and is so appreciated.”
“Thank you for your service to our country and its citizens.”
“Sincere thanks for the big sacrifices you’ve made for our nation.”
“You deserve thanks every day for your service.”
“You made the choice to defend our country, and you deserve our deepest gratitude.”
Dear Sailor or Marine is acceptable (not soldier) Students may drop cards off at the parish office during operating hours.
Project end date is February 5.
Project is sponsored by Catherine J. Sas c/o Luther Memorial Church, Tinton Falls, NJ/Earle Naval Basein conjunction with Chaplin Joseph Pinzl and Pastor Jace Detrie

Quo vadis . . .
My Dear Parishioners:
Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. We shrink from darkness; we don’t like it. We shrink from repentance; we don’t like it either, because to repent means that we must embrace a life of self-giving. Seeing the Light is actually much easier than following the Light! John’s faithfulness in preaching Jesus as the Messiah led him to prison and death. Jesus’ preaching about God’s kingdom at hand led him to the cross and death. If we follow the light, we know what awaits us: dying to self. Yet dying is the only way we ourselves can become the light that shines for others. Following the Light is a metaphor for repentance because the Light takes us where we would rather not go. But it is only this Light that brings us everlasting life. This is why we repent and follow.
Next month the Church observes the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. Traditionally candles are blessed during the mass on this day. We will bless a representative number of candles that will be used in our parish church for our liturgical celebrations. The following day, February 3rd is the memorial of Saint Blase, bishop and martyr…it is a custom of the church that throats are blessed on this day. In keeping with this tradition we will individually bless throats during the celebration of Eucharist on that day. “Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, may almighty God deliver you from every disease of the throat
and every other illness. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.” Both of these masses will be celebrated in our Parish Chapel.
During the winter months please use good judgement when making choices. The cold, and other weather conditions can make travel hazardous for some. Make sure to confirm parish services especially during winter storms and state declarations of emergency.
Congratulations to all those who generously supported our parish by participating in the 2022 Christmas Collection. We have included a report of the collection for your review. This collection represents a large portion (9+%) of our total annual revenue. I am very grateful to you for the sacrifices you make to support our parish community and the ministries that we support and offer.
The Colts Neck Pub has opened in the former Green Meadows location. There has been a remarkable makeover for this new venue offering a pub setting right here in town. Check it out and support a local business in 07722. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff.

CELEBRATING MARRIAGE FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY
Week 1 (February 4, 5)
Celebrating the Beauty of Catholic Marriage from the Catechism – read more at usccb.org under “Resources” 1601 "The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament."
Week 2 (February 11, 12) – World Marriage Day Weekend
Celebrating the Beauty of Catholic Marriage from the Catechism – read more at usccb.org under “Resources” 1605 Holy Scripture affirms that man and woman were created for one another: "It is not good that the man should be alone." The woman, "flesh of his flesh," his equal, his nearest in all things, is given to him by God as a "helpmate"; she thus represents God from whom comes our help. "Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh." The Lord himself shows that this signifies an unbreakable union of their two lives by recalling what the plan of the Creator had been "in the beginning": "So they are no longer two, but one flesh." (Catechism of the Catholic Church)
Week 3 (February 18, 19)
Celebrating the Beauty of Catholic Marriage from the Catechism – read more at usccb.org under “Resources” 1643 "Conjugal love involves a totality, in which all the elements of the person enter - appeal of the body and instinct, power of feeling and affectivity, aspiration of the spirit and of will. It aims at a deeply personal unity, a unity that, beyond union in one flesh, leads to forming one heart and soul; it demands indissolubility and faithfulness in definitive mutual giving; and it is open to fertility. (Catechism of the Catholic Church)
Week 4 (February 25, 26)
Celebrating the Beauty of Catholic Marriage from the Catechism – read more at usccb.org under “Resources” 1644 The love of the spouses requires, of its very nature, the unity and indissolubility of the spouses' community of persons, which embraces their entire life: "so they are no longer two, but one flesh." They "are called to grow continually in their communion through day-to-day fidelity to their marriage promise of total mutual self-giving." This human communion is confirmed, purified, and completed by communion in Jesus Christ, given through the sacrament of Matrimony. It is deepened by lives of the common faith and by the Eucharist received together (Catechism of the Catholic Church).
