Summer Sounds Concert Series

Our parish will once again produce our annual summer concert, a tradition which began in 2018. Comprised of singers from other local parishes, local community choirs, and members of neighboring towns who don’t normally sing in a choir, but welcome the opportunity to join a group for a few weeks.

The concert will feature two major works. The first is Mozart's "Sparrow" Mass, K.220, which heavily features the choir and soloists, and is accompanied by strings, trumpet, oboe, and organ. The second work is by acclaimed local composer Michael John Trotta, entitled "Intimations of Immortality," with text based on the poem of the same name by William Wordsworth. The choir is accompanied by piano, strings, french horn, and oboe.

The concert will be held in the church, August 8th, at 7pm. It is free to attend, but donations are encouraged to help offset the cost of the program and to fund future endeavors. It will run approximately one hour. All are encouraged to attend a wonderful night of music making.

John Vianney, Priest, 1786-1859

John Vianney was born in a village near Lyons, France shortly before the French Revolution. His parents, poor farmers, were devout Catholics and brought up their son to be the same.

John received minimal schooling while working as a shepherd on his family farm, and he longed for more education. From an early age, he developed a desire to become a priest. At about the age of eighteen, he voiced the idea of a priestly vocation to his father, who immediately discouraged him. John was of great help on the farm, and his father could neither afford to lose him, nor to finance his education for the priesthood. Yet John did not give up on his dream.

About two years later, John got permission to attend a lower seminary that had been established in a neighboring village by the Abbé Balley, a priest who was to play a major role in John’s formation. With John’s meager educational background, learning came very hard to him, and he struggled with his subjects, particularly Latin. During the summer, on a sixty-mile pilgrimage to the shrine of St. John Francis Regis, he sought God’s help in becoming a priest. While his studies became no easier, the deep discouragement that John had felt was lifted from him and his goal was reaffirmed.

High School & College Students

As a parish community we recognize the need to support graduates in staying connected to the Catholic Church after they graduate.

With more than 80% of high school students leaving their faith in college, we need a way to connect graduates to the next step in their faith journey.

Our parish has partnered with Newman Connection. Newman Connection connects graduating high school students to the Catholic campus ministry of their chosen college (whether it is a Catholic college or not).

Mission Co-Op 2024

August 10 & 11

This year’s Mission Co-Op Appeal will be taken up at the weekend Masses of August 10/11. We are happy to welcome to our parish a member of the Religious Teachers Filippini, Sister Ella Mae McDonald, MPF. The Religious Teachers Filippini have served in the Diocese of Trenton since 1910 and have international missions in Ethiopia, Eritrea, India, Albania, and Brazil. In these countries, the Sisters operate schools, nurseries, clinics, skill-training programs for women, minister to AIDS orphans, and work to meet other spiritual and human needs. These missionary endeavors are a tangible expression of the congregation’s motto, “Go and Teach the Word of God.” The international missions depend on the generosity of donors. Thank you in advance for whatever you are able to contribute to the fulfillment of their mission.

Quo vadis...

Dear Parishioners:

Today the Universal Church celebrates the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. What we need before receiving Eucharist is a personal relationship with Jesus. There is a curious paradox here: on the one hand, we need to feast on Jesus who is the Bread of Life in order to strengthen our belief, our relationship with him. On the other hand, we must have a relationship with Jesus (belief) in order for Eucharist to nourish us. Belief and bread from heaven come together in Jesus, who gives himself to us. If Jesus is the bread from heaven given for us and we are the body of Christ, then we must conclude that we ourselves are to be bread from heaven that fosters eternal life for others. As God has “set his seal” on Jesus, so through baptism and confirmation has God “set his seal” on us. Jesus gives himself as bread from heaven; we give ourselves to others as bread from heaven when we confirm our belief by means of the everyday actions we do. Treating another as the body of Christ is believing. Taking time to be in touch with our spiritual needs is believing. Reaching out in compassion to others is believing. Selfgiving is believing.

This weekend there is a New Parishioner Orientation scheduled at and after the 10am mass. Attendance is mandatory for all those who have submitted a census form. I have been advised that there are about 24 households who have been in the pipeline of registering; an additional 9 households since the May NPO. I am grateful to our staff fir their time and talent in hosting this informative event. Welcome to our New Parishioners.

Next weekend we will hear the message of Sister Ella Mae McDonald, MPF and how the Church in Ethiopia, Brazil and other parts of the globe continues its mission with the prayer and finance resources from throughout the globe to assist them. I invite you to generously share your financial support in person, online as you are able. We have prepared a QR code in the narthex of the church as well as the ebulletin. Place your check made payable to St Mary with Mission Co-op in memo in the box with your weekly offering. Thank you for your steadfast prayer and your continued support of the missionary efforts of our Catholic Church.

It is hard to believe that the month of August is upon us. The summer is nearly half complete. There has been a lot of coming and going within our community. Parishioners and staff are taking time for some holiday, rest and re-creation. This is good. A time to reconnect with family and friends is good too. Don’t forget to make it a priority to participate in the Sunday mass wherever you find yourself. The Lord awaits us especially on Sunday. Make the celebration of the Eucharist a deliberate part of your summer time away.

This week we will welcome those families who have pre-registered their children for the August (in person) Summer Intensive Religious Education session. There are more than 100 children pre-registered for this session this year. The July session was a positive experience for the participants, their parents, the catechists and all involved. It is my hope that the August session will once again be a positive experience. The Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 15 August. This is the patronal observance of our Diocese of Trenton and our Diocesan Cathedral. Let us pray that Mary, Mother of the Church will continue to intercede for us. The Mass schedule for both Saint Catharine Holmdel and Saint Mary is printed in the e-bulletin. Please make a note in your schedule to participate.

Next weekend we will offer coffee and donuts following the 10am mass. It will beset up in the narthex and under the canopy of the entrance. This is a good way to build and strengthen our parish community.

Thanks to all of those who have already made a gift or pledge to the 2024 Annual Catholic Appeal. Those who have not are requested to prayerfully consider how you may participate in this important act of support of our local church in solidarity with His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.

Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Next Weekend August 3 & 4 is our Annual Co-Op Mission Appeal Fund Collection
