Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Every August 15, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a day which commemorates the assumption of Mary into Heaven, body and soul, to be with her son, Jesus. This is an important Catholic belief and dogma of the Church.
One week later, on the octave of the Assumption, August 22, a lesser known feast of Mary occurs; the Feast of the Queenship of Mary.
There is both a biblical and theological background to this title for the Blessed Virgin Mother. Biblically speaking, in the Gospel of Luke, the angel Gabriel announces that Jesus will be “Son of the Most High”, and that the Lord will give him the throne of David, and that his reign will be without end. In the Hebrew tradition, if a man became King, his mother would automatically be granted the title of Queen. The Book of Revelation also speaks of “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head”. The Catholic Church views Mary as this woman.
From a theological standpoint, Pope Pius XII proclaimed “Jesus is King throughout all eternity by nature and by right of conquest: through Him, with Him, and subordinate to Him, Mary is Queen by grace, by divine relationship, by right of conquest, and by singular choice [of the Father]”. Similar to the account of the Annunciation, Mary is Queen by her son being King, and also through the will of God the Father.
John’s early training came from the Jesuits, but his own interest was in the Congregation of the Oratory, a group of secular priests who took no vows but had a common goal of reinvigorating the spiritual life of their communities. John was ordained in 1625 and celebrated his first Mass on Christmas Day that year.
Almost immediately, John became seriously ill and was not able to preach the missions that the Oratorians were noted for. He was finally able to join the Congregation after a year of recovery and retreat and several more months of study.
Shortly after his recovery, a letter from his father informed him of a plague that had struck his native region in Normandy. John sought and, after some delay, received permission to go to Normandy to minister to sick and dying and their families. His ministry was most welcome because many of the priests in the region had fled the area to avoid the plague.
When the plague had been eradicated, John was directed to the Oratorian house in Caen to continue his preparation for conducting missions. But in 1631, John’s relatively quiet life was again disturbed when a plague hit Caen. Once again, the priest turned his attention to the sick, and established, together with some Jesuits and Capuchins, established a hospital for the plague victims. When the superior of the Oratorians, a priest who had been John’s mentor some years before, visited Caen and discovered that his protégé had not yet been sent out to do missions, he urged that to happen. Thus John Eudes began a long preaching career, which was to include 110 missions. Read More HERE.

Today we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The development of the Bread of Life discourse leads us to a broader understanding of Eucharist. Jesus’ invitation in giving us his flesh and blood to eat and drink is an invitation to enter into his own self-giving. Eucharist is self-giving. We can be self-giving like Jesus because by eating his flesh and drinking his blood we become Jesus, the body of Christ. This is why we can “remain” in Jesus—we are transformed by what we eat. Our relationship to Jesus, then, becomes a relationship of indwelling, of divine life. This is why Eucharist is a promise of eternal life: because we already have divine life within us. Eucharist is both gift given and invitation to our self-giving. The mystery of Eucharist strengthens us for our daily dying and rising, our daily giving of ourselves for the sake of others so that we all might share more abundantly in divine life. How can we afford not to say Amen?
Many thanks for your kind welcome of Sister Ella Mae. We will continue to receive offerings for another week or so. Thank you for your generous sharing. Congratulations to members of the Faith Formation RE Advisory Committee and the Hospitality Committee for coordinating the Coffee and Donuts last Sunday. Hosting in the Narthex and plaza was a bit of a learning curve but they were very organized and created a welcoming environment. Thank you!
We have concluded the final week of our second module for the RE Summer Intensive Program. Many thanks to all those catechists
who support us, the scores of volunteers who assist, and our parish staff for their careful oversight in forming our children and young people. We must strive to offer the very best we can so that these young people will continue to grow in their faith and be active participants in the Church.
Many thanks to those parishioners who regularly contribute online to our fund for the poor and needy so that we can continue to serve the needs of the poor. In addition to assistance for our community we continue to assist and work with surrounding parishes to meet the needs of their people. We continue to receive food donations each week. There is a container in the narthex of the church building. You can drop off non-perishable food items any day of the week that is convenient for you. Your food supplies help us support local agencies to care for the poor and needy. Thank you.
A special word to all of our sick and homebound parishioners. Many of them have helped to establish our parish community through their stewardship and sacrifice. I keep them in my prayer each and every day.
We will observe an abbreviated Mass schedule fir the Labor Day weekend. Please make note of this. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.
Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
