The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Solemnity and Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated every year on August 15.
Speak with a Priest Struggling with a life event and in need of spiritual assistance?
The most widely told account is that the apostles of Jesus heard of the passing of Mary and went to pay their respects. It is said that Saint Thomas (yes, the doubting one, although this may very well be a story telling device to connect the narratives) was not with the others, arriving 3 days afterwards. His late arrival led the others to decide to re open the tomb, to allow Thomas to see the body, only to find that the body was not present, leading to the belief that she had risen from the dead as had Christ, and had ascended into Heaven. While this is a touching story with many parallels to that of Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the veracity of the account is often called into question. Nevertheless, it was enough to convince authorities several centuries later to begin celebrating Mary’s ascension.

Saint of the Week: Mary, Mother of Jesus, First Century
The greatest and first among all of our saints and a patron for all of us, Mary was chosen by God to be the mother of his son. Very little is known about Mary outside of the New Testament. By tradition, she was born in Jerusalem, the daughter of Joachim and Anne. Catholics believe in Mary's Immaculate Conception, which means that Mary was born without original sin, the only human so honored by God. In the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, we learn that the angel Gabriel came to Mary and announced that she was to be the mother of Jesus. We further learn about the angel's visit to Joseph; Mary’s journey to visit her cousin, Elizabeth, who acknowledged her as the mother of God; and about the birth and early life of Jesus. Read more HERE.
The celebration has been observed from the early days of the Church, likely beginning in the 5th century. While there is no account of Mary’s assumption in the New Testament, apocryphal texts give varying accounts of the end of life details of the Mother of Jesus.
This was later changed to a belief in the assumption of Mary. As there were no accounts of her physical body remaining on earth, it was surmised that rather than dying and rising again, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven. This belief, as well as scriptural passages from the Psalms and Book of Revelation, led Pope Pius to declare with papal infallibility on November 1, 1950: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” and thus we honor Mary, Queen of Heaven on this Holy Day.

What is the Eucharist Revival? It is a movement of Catholics across the United States to be healed, converted, formed, and unified by an encounter with Jesus in the Eucharist and sent out in mission “for the life of the world.” The National Eucharistic Revival and National Eucharistic Congress are a direct response to the Holy Father’s call for a “pastoral and missionary conversion which cannot leave things as they presently are” so that the Church in the United States might be “permanently in a state of mission” (Evangelii Gaudium, n. 25). Why is it so important for the Church today All parishes have experienced a significant decline in the number of people coming to Mass and receiving the Sacraments in the recent past. Our own diocesan assessments have shown that this is a reality. We have also heard surveys report that among the Catholics who regularly attend Mass, about two thirds do not believe or understand that the Holy Eucharist is truly the substantial Presence of Jesus TheChrist.Holy Eucharist is a foundational teaching coming from the Lord Jesus Himself, who said to His disciples as He blessed the bread and the wine at the Last Supper, “Take, eat, this is my body” and then, “Take, drink it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant” (Mt 26:26 27). He also said, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh” (Jn 6:51). My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. When does discipleship not divide? One answer is when the commitment to discipleship is superficial and the disciple doesn’t have the fiery passion Jesus displays in the Gospel. About this lack of passion the disciple will be judged. Our call to discipleship is not nearly as dramatic as the stories of the scriptures proclaimed today. Our judgment comes over whether we are faithful to our yes to discipleship in the small, everyday things as well as the times when the more serious things come along. Is living God’s will and establishing the kingdom the absolute priority in our lives? Can we say yes?
Quo vadis…
The Parish Religious Education Program summer session module II is midway. This is a major effort of our parish to support parents, children and families in their search for the sacred in everyday living. It is the role of all parishioners to assist parents in transmitting our Catholic Faith to their children. We have a great tradition here at Saint Mary Parish. We need to continue to build upon that tradition through evaluation and assessment and never adopt the attitude that our work is complete or we have arrived. Conversion happens throughout one’s lifetime. Monday is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the Patron of our Diocese of Trenton and the Cathedral Church. This is also the anniversary of the re-dedication and expansion of our parish Grotto and Prayer Garden. We have scheduled mass in the morning and in the evening in our parish church for your conBrothervenience.Gregory

I am grateful to all those who offer guidance and counsel in our financial stewardship of parish resources. We continue to welcome new members to our parish. Recently there were 10 families represented at the New Parishioner Orientation. We continue to welcome families who are preparing for the Sacrament of Baptism.
