Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org
is a Solemnity and Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated every year on August 15.
The celebration has been observed from the early days of the Church, likely beginning in the 5th century. While there is no account of Mary’s assumption in the New Testament, apocryphal texts give varying accounts of the end of life details of the Mother of Jesus.
The most widely told account is that the apostles of Jesus heard of the passing of Mary and went to pay their respects. It is said that Saint Thomas (yes, the doubting one, although this may very well be a story-telling device to connect the narratives) was not with the others, arriving 3 days afterwards. His late arrival led the others to decide to re-open the tomb, to allow Thomas to see the body, only to find that the body was not present, leading to the belief that she had risen from the dead as had Christ, and had ascended into Heaven.
While this is a touching story with many parallels to that of Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the veracity of the account is often called into question. Nevertheless, it was enough to convince authorities several centuries later to begin celebrating Mary’s ascension.
This was later changed to a belief in the assumption of Mary. As there were no accounts of her physical body remaining on earth, it was surmised that rather than dying and rising again, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven. This belief, as well as scriptural passages from the Psalms and Book of Revelation, led Pope Pius to declare with papal infallibility on November 1, 1950: “By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.”
and thus we honor Mary, Queen of Heaven on this Holy Day.
Early writings about this saint are, in some cases, based on myth and, in others, confused with either a later saint or a heretic of the same name. As an early writer pointed out, however, Apollinaris’ reputation for holiness and miracles authenticated him as a bona fide saint.
Apollinaris is said to be a native of Antioch and a follower of Saint Peter. While no firm evidence exists to support it, some early writers have suggested that he was among the seventy-two sent out by Jesus (Lk10:1). In any case, he is said to have traveled with Saint Peter from Antioch where, sometime later, Peter ordained him as bishop and sent him to Ravenna.
Soon after his arrival, Apollinaris performed his first miracle when a Centurion asked him to cure his son who was blind. When Apollinaris made the sign of the cross on the boy’s eyes, his sight was instantly restored. Word of this miracle spread quickly through the city and, a day or so later, another senior Roman officer sought him out and asked him to cure his wife’s long standing illness. This he did.

As a parish community we recognize the need to support graduates in staying connected to the Catholic Church after they graduate.
With more than 80% of high school students leaving their faith in college, we need a way to connect graduates to the next step in their faith journey.
Our parish has partnered with Newman Connection. Newman Connection connects graduating high school students to the Catholic campus ministry of their chosen college (whether it is a Catholic college or not).

This year’s Mission Co-Op Appeal will be taken up at the weekend Masses of August 10/11. We are happy to welcome to our parish a member of the Religious Teachers Filippini, Sister Ella Mae McDonald, MPF. The Religious Teachers Filippini have served in the Diocese of Trenton since 1910 and have international missions in Ethiopia, Eritrea, India, Albania, and Brazil. In these countries, the Sisters operate schools, nurseries, clinics, skill-training programs for women, minister to AIDS orphans, and work to meet other spiritual and human needs. These missionary endeavors are a tangible expression of the congregation’s motto, “Go and Teach the Word of God.” The international missions depend on the generosity of donors. Thank you in advance for whatever you are able to contribute to the fulfillment of their mission.

Today we celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We always like the language of receiving eternal life; language of death and selfsacrifice is much more difficult for us to take in. The two go together. If we wish to live we must be willing to die to ourselves. Lest we get too discouraged, we must always remember that paschal mystery is a rhythm of dying and rising. We are able to embrace death because, through Jesus, we know that death always leads to life. This is why, unlike the crowd who simply didn’t understand, we are able to believe: because Jesus has gone before us and taught us that death leads to life. The rhythm of the paschal mystery enables us to believe. Cross leads to resurrection.
This week we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (15 August 2024). It is always a holy day…Solemnity of the Church; however, some years, in conformity with the liturgical guidelines of the USCCB, the obligation to participate in the Eucharist has been lifted. This is also the celebration of the Patroness of the Diocese of Trenton. Please consult the e-bulletin for mass schedule here and at Saint Catharine, Holmdel for your convenience.
This weekend we welcome in a special way those families who are participating in our Summer Session Religious Education program. We are midway in the second module for the Summer Intensive Religious Education Program. I am grateful to all those responsible for this initiative and to all of our parishioners for their cooperation during this time. It is so very important that all we do as a parish flow from our experience of Eucharist and that our personal prayer, stewardship and service lead us back to the Eucharist as a thanksgiving and food to continue the journey as disciples. Anyone who desires to assist with our Faith Formation and Religious Education Ministries should reach out to Julia Cullen. I know that they would
welcome committed persons to assist with these ministries.
This weekend we welcome Sister Ella Mae McDonald, MPF who will offer the reflection at every mass. Some of you may be familiar with the Religious Teachers Fillipini who staff the Saint Joseph by the Sea Retreat House and have staffed schools in Monmouth County. Welcome Sister Ella Mae.
We are preparing the RCIA Process and have received some inquiries about the Catholic Church and what it means to be a member. Some are not baptized, others baptized in another Christian confession and others who were baptized Roman Catholic and have not completed their Sacramental Initiation by receiving First Eucharist and/or Confirmation. Inquiries should be made to the Parish Office by contacting Rose Farrow. We are joining together with out Co-hort 13 member parish of Saint Catherine, Holmdel so that we might share our resources to provide the very best adult faith formation opportunities building on our strong past.
Ever wanted to speak with a priest? Have questions about faith? Life in the Church? Marriage… Divorce…Church Annulment? Father Mike will be available to meet with individuals or couples to help them understand God’s plan for them in theor journey of faith. Father Mike has been busy these past few years and continues to welcome those who have questions or concerns about their Catholic Faith.
Don’t forget to take a look in your closets for those clothing items that are now too big and consider donating them to the Martha Mary Guild Annual Clothing Sale. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer.
Happy Sunday. Peace! Father Jeff
