Monica was born in Tagaste, North Africa and raised a Christian by her parents. A part of her upbringing by a strict family retainer was to abstain from drinking anything between meals. When she was old enough to marry, her parents arranged a marriage with Patricius, a pagan who was also from Tagaste. Patricius was described as a man with good qualities, but having a raging temper and inclined to dissoluteness. This was only the first of the crosses which Monica had to bear however.

FOR DEEPER REFLECTION

Do not live in fear. Live, and be ready!

Question for Children:

Jesus tells us to always be ready to hear him. What are some ways that he speaks to us?

Question for Youth:

If Jesus were to knock on your door today and give you a report card on your life as His disciple, what grade would you get? Where would be your areas for improvement?

Question for Adults:

On a daily basis, what are some ways to keep yourself “ready for God to act?” How do you pay attention to God’s often-less-than-obvious actions?

Please pray for the following members of our parish community who are ill:

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Solemnity and Holy Day of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church, celebrated every year on August 15.

The celebration has been observed from the early days of the Church, likely beginning in the 5th century. While there is no account of Mary’s assumption in the New Testament, apocryphal texts give varying accounts of the end of life details of the Mother of Jesus.

The most widely told account is that the apostles of Jesus heard of the passing of Mary and went to pay their respects. It is said that Saint Thomas (yes, the doubting one, although this may very well be a story-telling device to connect the narratives) was not with the others, arriving 3 days afterwards. His late arrival led the others to decide to re-open the tomb, to allow Thomas to see the body, only to find that the body was not present, leading to the belief that she had risen from the dead as had Christ, and had ascended into Heaven.

While this is a touching story with many parallels to that of Christ’s resurrection and ascension, the veracity of the account is often called into question. Nevertheless, it was enough to convince authorities several centuries later to begin celebrating Mary’s ascension.

This was later changed to a belief in the assumption of Mary. As there were no accounts of her physical body remaining on earth, it was surmised that rather than dying and rising again, the Virgin Mother of God was assumed, body and soul, into Heaven. This belief, as well as scriptural passages from the Psalms and Book of Revelation, led Pope Pius to declare with papal infallibility on November 1, 1950:

“By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” And thus, we honor Mary, Queen of Heaven on this Holy Day.

Why Become a Hospice Volunteer?

Thinking of Becoming Catholic?

The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is the Church's process of welcoming newcomers into full communion with the Catholic Church. As you enter the Church, the parish community and the OCIA Program will walk with you on your journey of faith.

Click here for more information or email PastoralCare-OCIA@stmaryscoltsneck.org

The simplest gifts are often the most profound. If you’ve got time, empathy, and compassion, you have the ability to support those nearing end of life. If you have been searching for meaningful ways to spend your time, we invite you to explore the role of hospice volunteer with VNA Health Group.

Companionship visits in patient’s homes or facilities in Monmouth or Middlesex Counties, administrative projects, or comforting phone calls from our Neptune office, are just some of the ways in which our volunteers support patients and their families. A Specialized 16-hour Training will be provided by members of the VNA Hospice Team, over the course of 3 weeks.

Quo vadis...

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The final line of this gospel is most demanding and directly applicable to our daily paschal mystery living: “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” We’ve been entrusted with much: furthering Jesus’ mission of bringing the good news of salvation to all his disciples. We have been entrusted with even more: we are not simply servants, but because of our baptism and being plunged into the paschal mystery we become members of the body of Christ. Our faithfulness is measured by even more than doing God’s will; it is measured by our beingthe presence of the risen Christ for all those we meet. The parallel the gospel offers is between possessions or Person. The real surprise of the gospel is that we ourselves, in our daily paschal mystery living of dying to ourselves for the sake of others, become more perfectly that presence of the very Master for whom we are vigilant. We ourselves are treasure, too, when we are faithful disciples.

We are at the midpoint of our August Summer session for Religious Education. It is wonderful to have so many young people on campus. Their energy is inspiring. As they join us for daily mass, they encourage the regular attendees and I think the regular attendees witness and fidelity inspires the young people.

This coming week, we observe the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is a holy day of obligation. Masses for your convenience at both Saint Mary and Saint Catharine locations has been posted on the church doors, listed in the e-bulletin and on the website. Come and honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, receive the Most Holy Eucharist and pray for our Diocese of Trenton. Mary, assumed into heaven is the matronal title of our diocesan cathedral and protector for our Diocese of Trenton.

This weekend we offer our prayer for all those students preparing to begin their first year in college, those returning to college and all students as they prepare for a new academic year. Education is such a great opportunity to grow in our perspective and vision. The world is a very different place today. Globalization challenges us to think in terms that are much broader and farreaching. The challenge remains that we not become unsteady in our own self-identity and the core foundation that supports our self-identity. The Catholic Community is one of those places where foundational or core values are lived in harmony with those that are fostered in the home. Our Catholic Church has, since the Second Vatican Council, stressed the importance of the Domestic Church of the Home. It is my hope that our parish community will continue to support parents and their children as they grow in faith. It is in this way that young people leave their home with the needed tools to live as responsible young adults in university life and as they move into their own residences. Globalization also challenges how we transmit our faith from generation to generation. Learning models for children, adolescents and young people continue to evolve. Some have found the FORMED website to be a helpful tool in learning more about their faith.

Work has begun to prepare our church building for a new Baptismal Font. The project was quite involved and through much consultation and planning I pray we addressed all of the issues. This being made possible through a generous gift from bona fide parishioners. We anticipate much of the work, including some new flooring, to be completed by early September 2025. I’ll try to keep you posted along the way.

We will observe an abbreviated mass schedule for Labor Day weekend. Make a note in your personal schedule. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff
