by Elkhart Civic Theater since 1961, is believed by many to be haunted. But you can’t prove that by ECT Executive Director Dave Dufour. “I’ve never seen one,” he commented, though he does not completely discount the many observations of others.

Dufour, who first joined the theater in 1968, does not even recall anyone mentioning ghosts until around 1995. It was around then theater workers started blaming the ghost of Percival Mosher, a local minister and handyman who

A small town man still working for the family business %\ -$60,1( 025(+($' 6WDII :ULWHU Larry Lea, 74, started working through high school at a local filling station, served in the army for over twenty years and plans to finish his career path working for the family tree cutting service and on the farm.

“Through high school I worked at a filling station. Just about four years in the filling station business, I joined Uncle Sam’s army,” Lea said.

Throughout his time in the Army he spent a good chunk overseas and more than 20 years in the service.

“20 years, six months and four days to be exact,” Lea said.

Once Lea returned home from the service, he wasted no time before heading down his next career path.

“I worked at the nursing home in Milford from ‘88 to probably 1998 and then two years at Borkholder Dutch Village, Then I was helping Larry from then on out with tree work and cattle,” Lea said.

Lea has worked with his brother-in-law Larry Weaver for roughly 20 years on the family farm and for the family business, Wawasee Tree Service.

“Do tree work together, mow hay, make the hay, play with

these little beasts (the cattle they raise), whatever has to be done,” Lea said.

However, he shares that with time and their age, the business has gone from the two of them running a crew to only them.

“When he was up in the trees, I would manage the ground. Kept the guys busy that was on the ground with us, but we don’t have the crew anymore. So, basically it’s just he and I and we only do little jobs any more,” Lea said.

He admits that they are slowing down, both physically and with the business.

“We’re slowing down any more, we’re not trying to keep build it up,” Lea said.

Larry explained that the business is very dangerous and requires you to be aware at all times.

“The tree business is one of the hardest. It falls I think, number two in he line of dangerous. Junk yard business is the dangerous, then tree service is very dangerous too.

You’ve got to be on your toes at all times,” Lea said.

He shared that the key to staying safe is your attention.

“It’s all paying attention to your surrounding at all times,” Lea said. “It’s quite a job, but just watch what you are doing.”

Despite them slowing down a little more and more as time goes on, he shared that he still enjoys what he does.

“It’s fun but it’s also a job.

And when it quits being fun then it’s time to quit,” Lea said.

His parting advice for those that are just starting out on their journey was simple, be true to your word.

Chia jam — or is it dessert?

I found this recipe for healthy chia jam, but I didn’t have any strawberries, so I tried it with blueberries — ooh-la-la, it was like warm blueberry pie, but a healthy two ingredient pie. Chia seeds are normally added to something with moisture where they soften and expand; often used as a thickener.

Some noted ways to use these heathy seeds: 1. Smoothies. A tablespoon or less of fresh seeds.

2. Salad Dressings. Chia seeds blend well with salad dressing ingredients such as olive oil and vinegars.

3. Pudding. You may find chia pudding on the menu at organic cafes and health food stores, or make at home.

4. Baked Goods. If you’re not a fan of chia seeds’ gelatin-like texture, try adding them to baked goods.

They don’t have much flavor, but when used to make foods, they add a ton of nutritional value.

Two tablespoons of chia seeds has: • 5 grams omega-3 fatty acids.

• 10 grams of fiber.

• 5 grams of protein.

• 17% of daily calcium needs.

• 12% daily iron requirements.

• 23% of daily magnesium.

the other half the next day cold. So it could be a jam, but it’s a dessert for me.

Healthy Chia Jam — Berry Yield: 1 cup Total Time: 10 minutes Ingredients: 2 cups fresh or frozen berries (I used blueberries) 2 tablespoons chia seeds 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup (optional) Instructions: 1. Use fresh or frozen berries. If using strawberries, cut the tops off and chop strawberries into chunks to speed up the cooking process.

2. Place the berries in a saucepan and cook on medium heat until the fruit begins to break down and bubble. I was tempted to add a little water but thankfully didn’t.

No water needs to be added.

3. Stir occasionally, and use a fork or potato masher

to mash the berries into the desired consistency. It takes about 7-10 minutes for the fruit to break apart and cook down and begin to bubble.

4. Turn down to low and add the chia seeds and maple syrup (if using), and stir well as the fruit sauce begins to thicken.

5. Remove from the heat and let it cool for 5-10 minutes. It will continue to thicken as it cools.

6. Serve immediately, or transfer the jam to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 10 days. One ghost, Percy perhaps, also assists the costume department, which currently stores around 10,000 different costumes. “They will help find costumes you can’t find,” Dufour reported. Workers will describe the missing costume, only to find it hanging on the rack the next day.

“Some are absolutely convinced,” Dufour admitted.

Such stories and many more, have inspired visits from ghost hunting groups and psychics, who have pored over the space with all manner of night vision cameras and electromagnetic sensors. One such party later saw what they believed to be the ghost of a dog on a video recording.

COVID put a stop to some of these investigations, and since then, Dufour explained, “We don’t have the manpower to oversee these groups.”

Dufour himself spends long hours alone in the opera house and appears perfectly at ease.

“It’s just me and the ghosts,” he joked.

Dufour is much more interested in the hard work of putting on the six or seven productions ECT performs every year, along with a summer camp for kids. The company has over 100 people involved over a typical year.

“There’s a cyclical nature to it,” said Dufour of the rotating cast members, lighting engineers, set designers, costume workers, musicians and more.

“There’s always a few who get bitten by the bug.” This is part of the true magic of the place.

“People come together from varied backgrounds to create art for the community,” Du-

And Dufour sees second and third generations taking part in creating that magic. In fact, his daughter, Demaree DufourNoneman, directed “Doubt,” a drama staged in September 2021. And his grandchildren are now involved as well, in acting and production. There is something for everyone.

“It’s a real educational opportunity for people,” Dufour stated. An example is Mel Moore, a welder who became involved with set building and devised a way to level the stage.

“There’s always room for new blood,” Dufour added. Volunteers often leave ECT having learned a skill, such as lighting

design. “The social networking and teaching is almost as important as the art itself.”

The 2021-2022 show calendar includes the musical “Bright Star,” by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, in November, and “Miracle on 34th Street,” a holiday radio play, on Dec. 17, 18 and 19.

In 2022, “The Game’s Afoot,” the musical “Honkey Tonk Laundry,” “Arsenic and Old Lace,” and “SpongeBob Square Pants,” the musical, will show from February thru July.

Bob Tiedge: receiving much, giving much %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU The Good Book says, “To whom much is given, much will be required.” Bob Tiedge has spent his life meeting and exceeding that requirement.

The 80-year-old holds 27 U.S. patents. He earned his first in 1978 and has five more pending, one for a combustion generator that produces electricity from a campfire. His inventions, assisted by “two great engineers, Mark and Anton,” mostly involve developments in the field of hydraulics.

Tiedge was recently recognized for his visionary and innovative industry-changing contributions at Lippert Components during an RV/MH Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Elkhart.

Despite accomplishments and accolades most folks can scarcely dream of his list of employment, military, educational, camping and volunteer experiences runs five full pages.

Tiedge, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, cited “the proudest of life’s accomplishments” as “being able to work with the Holy Cross Sisters, building and maintaining an orphanage for about 50 kids” while deployed in Japan.

The man loves children, and wakes up thinking, “how I can help give back to the children I have been fortunate to have received?”

Teidge has no kids of his own, not the flesh-and-blood type, anyway. “What you see here,” he said, harkening to the prototypes and designs populating his personal workshop near Syracuse, “is my children.

What other people put into living beings, I put into my products. With every single product I develop, I live it 24/7.”

His dedication is tireless. He typically works 18 hours a day and hasn’t taken a vacation since “the 1960s.” Nor is he a clock watcher. “Sometimes I’ll come in here at 2 a.m. to work and the next thing I know, the

Tiedge has worked for Lippert since 2000 and was appointed ambassador for the company last October to spearhead the Lippert Campground Project, where he visits campsites around the country to engage in nightly campfire chats with RV vacationers, learning from consumers and educating them about Lippert’s products and services.

Tiedge encapsulated the key to his successes. “I have a passion for perfection and an immense curiosity. I don’t envision the world as most people do, and when I am told, ‘That is impossible,’ that is when my vision gets sharper. I tend to see full functionality from cradle to grave as numbers, not as personal perceptions from others.”

A decidedly confident man, Tiedge does not “revel in the victory, because I don’t expect to lose. The victory for me is in the challenge.” But he is also remarkably humble, a character quality of which RVBusiness magazine took note in its wrap-up of the induction ceremony: “Tiedge had the distinction of being the last inductee to take the stage. After a long evening, he managed to capture the hearts of everyone with a humbling acceptance speech that touched on Lippert’s culture of giving back to the community, and culminated with him bringing out his phone and playing ‘How Great Thou

Accompanying the song, Tiedge, a devout Christian, gave his final and most important thank you of the evening by citing Psalm 86:12, “I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will

glorify your name forever.”

His advice to others: “The first step is to believe and live what you want to accomplish.

You can’t just say, ‘I have a passion for that.’ So do a lot of other people. Set yourself apart relentlessly and don’t listen to the doubters.”

I have struggled over the years with depression. I just got on Medicare. Does it cover mental health services?

Mental health is very important, and preventive care can help identify patients who are at risk for mental health problems to get them treatment sooner.

Medicare Part B fully covers many preventive services, including screenings to access your risk for certain mental health conditions.

Medicare covers 100% for the following preventive benefits: • Annual depression screening. All people with Medicare can get one free evaluation for depression per year as long as the doctor accepts Medicare assignment.

• Alcohol misuse screening. Some people with mental health problems may struggle with alcohol or drug abuse.

Medicare covers one alcohol misuse screening per year.

All Medicare enrollees who are not alcohol dependent may qualify. If you’re alcohol dependent, you may qualify for counseling.

• “Welcome to Medicare” visit. This introductory preventive visit includes a review of your risk for depression. You’ll need to have the exam within the first year of getting Medicare.

• “Wellness” visit. During this annual visit, your doctor will evaluate your physical and mental health, and you’ll have the opportunity to bring up any mental health concerns with your physician. Your doctor may make recommenda-

Get the names of two or three of their clients you can talk to check their experiences with the planner. Don’t put too much faith in these referrals because they’re going to pick their most satisfied customers, but the feedback can help round out the other information you collect.

You’re not there to make any commitment because you’re going to review their policies and practices along with those of the other two or three prospects you plan to visit.

Have them give you an outline of what type of program they feel best meets your needs and aims. And ask them how they make their money.

Do you charge a fixed fee? A percentage of whatever profit they make for you? Or a commission on each transaction?

Once you’ve chosen a planner, be totally frank with them and give them all your financial information so they can make sound decisions on the best program for you.

Being an executor takes work %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV When someone dies, their family usually devotes their time and thoughts to making arrangements for a memorable funeral and who to invite.

Tending to such details as contacting the Social Security Administration and checking their bank and credit card accounts is often overlooked and, in many cases, considered crass. These and a multitude of other issues can become major problems if not tended to immediately.

Having an executor in your circle eliminates much of the emotional and economic turmoil.

The person you have selected to handle all your problems and property is prepared to act immediately.

It’s not an easy job. The paperwork can be mountainous, especially if the deceased was married more than once and survivors include children from each marriage.

Picking an executor, or being asked to be one, is serious business. You may be flattered if someone asks you to take care of things after they die, but be aware that it’s a job — a serious chore.

Talk things over with the person asking you or the person you’re asking to handle your estate.

Be prepared for surprises.

The individual asking you to be executor may want to donate all their worldly goods to a charity and nothing to their family. Or they may want to exclude a prodigal child.

You’ll have to deal with that.

If this makes the executorto-be uncomfortable, it’s time for them to bow out.

When anyone agrees to take on the after-death duties, the focus turns on paperwork. The executor has to know where the original will is. It and a death certificate — get a good supply of them from the funeral director because you’ll need plenty — have to be filed with the probate court to be recognized as the executor of the deceased’s estate.

Those death certificates will be required for a host of duties — shutting down utilities, selling a car, cancelling credit cards and store ac-

counts, and getting access to bank accounts, safety deposit boxes, and investment and pension portfolios.

Often overlooked is the security of the deceased’s property. The executor has to see to it that the dead person’s home is locked up and secure.

Valuables — jewelry, artwork, heirlooms — should be moved to a safer place rather than left in a vacant house.

Family members may act on their own and take whatever they think is theirs rather than wait for the executor to take care of the dead person’s wishes.

Tasks can mount. The executor may have to sell the family home and any rental property in the estate as well as wrap up tax filings. Staying organized is important because these are details from a life other than yours and you might easily become confused about which is which.

The executor might choose to go over everything with an attorney to avoid any liability action as the work unfolds.

In this modern day, the executor is going to need a list of every password in the deceased’s computer, laptop, cell phone and all other electronic devices.

Executors should also be

prepared for some surprises — a stash of illegal drugs the deceased was taking secretly or a collection of pornography hidden away or a long ago lover with documents awarding them a portion of the estate — as well as conflict and resentment from members of the family.

The roaring crowd after a touchdown, popcorn breaks during halftime shows and huddling together when it gets just a little too chilly. All the familiar sounds and scents that we know too well.

Who makes this all possible? The attendance guy.

That’s right, Barton Curtis is the head administrator of attendance at Warsaw High School, but after school hours he doubles as the football coach.

For the past 37 years Curtis has been coaching football, and has been a head coach for the past 31.

He’s been both a coach and teacher at many different high schools around the area over the years. This didn’t all just start out of nowhere though. Curtis had his own glory days in football. Graduating from NorthWood High School in 1981, he played football throughout high school and into college. After college, Curtis married his wife, Sarah, and had three

In 1980 he played on a state finalist team at NorthWood and was on the Manchester College football team.

While in college Curtis got a

degree in physical education and went on to teach that for 14 years. In 1986 he started coaching. He became an assistant coach for six years at various schools and was head coach at Maconaquah for six

years. He then moved to New Prairie where he stayed for 11 years and then 10 years at Mishawaka.

After leaving Mishawaka, he and his family moved to Warsaw in 2016, which

A. A Seller may condition the sale of “replacement property” in a 1031 like – kind exchange which would require the property to revert back to the Seller in certain circumstances. However, placing such a “hook” of some sort on the replacement property that the Buyer in a 1031 like – kind exchange is planning to receive could jeopardize the Buyer’s tax deferred status and treatment of the proposed 1031.

To know for sure, we would need more clarification on what this “hook” looks like and how it is to be structured. Does the Seller want a unbinding ‘intent’ to have the

Poking into the Past:

The king of defense attorneys %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Cable news programs and social media have made celebrities of a dozen or so attorneys arguing their cases before the nation, but there’s little doubt many still bow to the dean of defense lawyers, Clarence Seward Darrow.

Born April 18, 1857, in the small northern Ohio town of Farmdale, Darrow rose to fame and prominence early in the 20th century for his defense in highly publicized trials. Called a sophisticated country lawyer, his wit and eloquence made him one of the most prominent attorneys and civil libertarians in the nation.

One of the more memorable events of his life is recorded in the movie, “Inherit the Wind,” a film detailing the Scopes “Monkey Trial” pitting actors Spencer Tracy and Fredric March against each other.

It’s a record of teacher John T. Scopes 1925 trial in which Darrow opposed noted statesman, presidential candidate and orator William Jennings Bryan.

Throughout his career, Darrow devoted himself to opposing the death penalty, which he felt to be in conflict with humanitarian progress. In more than 100 cases, Darrow only lost one murder case in Chicago. He became renowned for moving juries and even judges to tears with his eloquence. Chicago newspapers labeled the Leopold and Loeb case the “Trial of the Century.”

Darrow moved into the national public eye in 1924 when he defended teenage thrill killers Nathan Leopold Jr. and Richard Loeb for murdering 14-year-old Robert “Bobby” Franks.

The teenagers made full confessions and took police on a hunt around Chicago to collect the evidence that would be used against them.

The state’s attorney told the press he had a “hanging case” for sure. Darrow stunned the prosecution when his clients pleaded guilty, placing the case before a judge to avoid a vengeance-minded jury, Darrow’s closing argument lasted 12 hours. He repeatedly stressed the ages of the “boys,” noting that “never had there been a case in Chicago where, on a plea of guilty, a boy under 21 had been sentenced to death.” Leopold and Loeb were each sentenced to life in prison plus 99 years.

Darrow argued emotion is necessary for the decisions people make. When someone tries to go against a certain forbidden law or custom, the accused should feel a sense of

&/$5(1&( 6(:$5' '$552: revulsion. Darrow concluded that neither Leopold nor Loeb had a working emotional system as they did not feel “revolted.”

During the trial, the newspapers claimed Darrow was presenting a “million-dollar defense” for the two wealthy families. Many ordinary Americans were angered at his apparent greed. He had the two families issue a statement insisting that there would be no large legal fees and that compensation would be determined by the Chicago Bar Association.

After trial, Darrow suggested $200,000 would be reasonable. After lengthy negotiations with the defendants’ families, he ended up, after expenses, getting $30,000, about $380,000 in today’s money.

The following year Darrow defended school teacher John T. Scopes in State of Tennessee v. Scopes in what was probably his most famous trial. The term “Scopes Monkey Trial” was popularized by noted newspaperman H.L. Mencken of the Baltimore Sun. The substitute high school teacher was charged with teaching evolution in a public school against state law.

The trial began as a publicity stunt and was staged deliberately to bring publicity to the question the credibility of Darwin’s theory of evolution. It tested Tennessee’s newly passed Butler Act, which forbade the teaching of evolution in any state-funded educational establishment.

More broadly, it outlawed the teaching of “any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation as taught in the Bible.”

During the trial, Darrow requested that prosecuting attorney Bryan be called to the stand as an expert witness on the Bible. Bryan agreed. The popular media at the time portrayed Darrow’s

grilling of Bryan as the deciding factor that turned public opinion in favor of the teacher.

After about two hours, Judge John T. Raulston cut Darrow’s questioning short and, on the following morning, ordered the whole session be expunged from the record because Bryan’s testimony that “every word in the Bible was to be believed” had no bearing on whether Scopes was guilty of teaching the controversial subject.

Despite Darrow’s highly publicized defense, what most people don’t remember is the jury took less than 10 minutes to find Scopes guilty and he was ordered to pay the minimum fine of $100.

A year later, the Tennessee Supreme Court reversed Raulston’s decision on a procedural technicality, but not on constitutional grounds, as Darrow had hoped. The Tennessee high court dismissed the case, commenting “nothing is to be gained by prolonging the life of this bizarre case.”

The event became popularized in a play based on the trial and the 1960 film, “Inherit the Wind.”

Today, Darrow is remembered for his reputation as a fierce litigator and is generally regarded as one of the greatest criminal defense lawyers in American history.

He died March 13, 1938, of pulmonary heart disease and is buried in Chicago.

Attendance Continued from page 8 teaching and coaching at Warsaw. Soon after Michael started working at Warsaw, Curtis also decided it was the place for him.

Although coaching is Curtis’s passion, he also takes his job as head administrator of attendance very seriously. He feels that, “attendance is the number one aspect for success, and number one reason kids don’t succeed.” His job at Warsaw consists of working with students to maintain good attendance, meeting with students who are not maintaining good attendance and even making home visits.

This is now his fourth season coaching at Warsaw and he says the competitive spirit still burns inside of him. While he loves coaching, that’s not the only reason he does it. Curtis

enjoys helping young kids and working with new coaches in and out of staff to help meet goals. He has now coached over 36 games and says every one of them has been memorable.

Although he says this he does have some favorites, the team of 2019 came together late in the season but failed to win conference. They then turned around and won sectionals, “I watched them play their absolute best in all three years.” Curtis says. This game was also very special to him because it was Warsaw football’s first time ever winning sectionals and he got to do it with his son coaching by his side.

If Curtis had any advice to give out it would be, “Enjoy each day and take it for what it’s worth, and do your very best.”

‘Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves’ was never liked by Cher Cher

Thomas “Snuff” Garrett was a Dallas high school dropout who became a Lubbock, Texas, disc jockey at $ %RRPHU %ODVW age 17 and 7R 7KH 3DVW befriended %\ 5$1'$/ local music & +,// star Buddy Holly. Two years later, Garrett became a staff producer at Liberty Records in Los Angeles.

Garrett wasn’t a musician, but he did have the uncanny knack of finding — and later producing — hit songs. During the ‘60s, he created million-sellers for the likes of Bobby Vee (a Buddy Holly soundalike) and Gary Lewis & the Playboys.

Garrett lived in the Hollywood Hills, next door to Salvatore and Cherilyn Bono — better known in the entertainment world as Sonny and Cher.

(As with Garrett, both were also high-school dropouts.) In 1965, the husband-and-wife duo had rocketed to international fame when their ATCO single “I Got You Babe” became one of the biggest pop successes of the decade. But two years later, neither the pair together nor Cher on her own found themselves putting out any hits. Then, in 1971, Cher signed with Kapp Records, hopeful of finding a successful song that would return her to prominence.

Garrett asked songwriter pal Bob Stone to come up with something noteworthy that would bring Cher a hit and an audience beyond teenyboppers.

Stone responded with an adultlevel story-song called “Gypsies and White Trash.” Garrett sensed that Stone’s creation had hit potential but obviously needed some tweaking to avoid controversy. The result was one of the finest pop tunes of Cher’s career — and one she never really liked.

The melodramatic “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves” unfolds at near-breakneck speed — it lasts just 2 1/2 minutes — but unfurls a poignant tale of poverty and misfortune.

“I was born in the wagon of a travelin’ show “My mama used to dance for the money they’d throw” Cher as the 16-year-old narrator tells of meeting a 21-yearold drifter in Mobile, Ala. Her family befriends him, feeds him and gives him a ride to Memphis. He travels on from there, deserting the girl: “Three months later, I’m a gal in trouble “And I haven’t seen him for a while.”

The narrator’s daughter is, as she herself was, born in a wagon. Now the teenager is the one who must dance for money when men of the visited towns come to do their ogling. Hypocritically, those who frequent the traveling show later reject the gypsy families as lowlife carnies and grifters.

Cher all but spits out the words in a sort of punkish anger that renders Stone’s lyrics both haunting and depressing.

“Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves” held the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for two weeks. Cher never liked her comeback hit and dismissed it as “a song I recorded in, like, an hour.” In concert, she would

pare the tune to 90 seconds by eliminating a verse and a chorus. We’ll never know the

reason for Cher’s antipathy toward the song, but it does seem an odd way to treat Stone’s

creation that had granted her a rare return to stardom in the music world.

Identity theft can be costly It’s become a fact of daily living that anybody can know where you are and what you’re doing in today’s highly technological world.

You don’t have to subscribe to the rumor that COVID-19 inoculators are really shooting microscopic computer chips into your bodies so the government can track your movements.

They don’t have to, because your computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones are doorways into your daily lives.

Hackers can move into your existence and walk off with your identity. Then they can wipe you out financially.

Almost half — 47% — of the population reported some form of identity theft last year. The amount stolen totaled more than $710 billion. This involved primarily what is defined as application fraud — criminals use your identity to open a new account or take over your existing account, including insurance policies and rewards accounts with merchants, airlines and hotels.

That’s why you should review your financial picture and change your passwords regularly, as well as watch for unfamiliar transactions or transfers.

There are other ways crooks can make use of your identity — giving police your name when pulled over for a traffic stop, for instance.

The instant you suspect someone has stolen your identity, the Federal Trade Commission recommends you report identity theft with them first and take that report to the police so they

because it was in the middle of Covid, and, not quite frankly, I had nothing else to do.

So, I endured it…all 784 pages. Then a couple of weeks later I was on a Zoom meting with my church book club.

I got pretty puffed up about my recent accomplishment and dropped the name of that 4-pound opus I had completed.

“Wow, Dick,” said a friend, “that’s quite a hefty read. I’m impressed. Was he the Civil War general who had six wives and 13 children?”

Was he? How could I not remember? Why did I even bother reading that biography?

Next time Bob burdens me with an obligation like that, whenever he drops by I’ll just keep moving the bookmark forward. He’ll never know the difference.

I’m drawn mostly to non-fiction, which is all about getting information I can use to try to look smart when I am out of with my snooty friends. But since I don’t recall most of what I’ve read. I’m wondering what the point is. This past month, I read a fascinating book by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson called “Cosmic Queries.”

I enjoyed his stories. For example, I never knew how they first determined the speed of light.

But now if someone would ask me how they figured it was 186,000 miles per second, I’d have to say, “I knew that once like for about 20 minutes, last week. Not anymore.”

Years ago, I read “A Short History of Nearly Everything,”

by Bill Bryson. I couldn’t put the book down, but the day after I finished it, I remembered the history of nearly nothing.

My wife is into fiction, which gets her a lot of free passes.

She’ll say to a friend, “I just finished a great story, ‘Where the Crawdads Sing,’” and the most probing questions she’ll hear is: “Oh, did you like it?”

Occasionally someone will ask what it’s about and all she has to say is: “I don’t want to ruin it for you.” That’s the end of the conversation.

I’ve written several books.

You may have one of them sitting around your house that you have never looked at. Don’t worry; if you ever run into each other, I won’t question you about it. Honestly, I don’t even remember what I wrote.

Remaining faithful despite the obstacles %\ -$60,1( 025(+($' 6WDII :ULWHU Sue Price, an avid member of the Milford First Brethren Church and retired Milford school teacher, shared that despite having a rather rough year in terms of her health her faith is stronger than ever. In the last year she has battled three infections at once and is

currently healing from injuring her leg in a bike accident. She said that it’s her faith that has got her through.

“I just knew God was with me with this situation,” Price said.

Price shared that her faith originated largely because of her parents.

While growing up in the church, she felt that her faith was very strong when she was in school.

“During my high school years I was pretty strong with my faith,” she added.

Despite her faith being strong throughout her high school years, the year after her senior year is when her faith became less black and white.

“I was an exchange student to Iceland after my senior year,” Price said. “It was a really eye opening experience.”

In her time in Iceland she continued to grow and develop a deeper one on one relationship with God. “For me, that when I truly knew that God was with me,” she said. It became much more meaningful to me. There was no one there, I always had my parents at home,but no matter what I was going to church.”

After returning home, she started to explore God and all the works he does in the lives of those around her.

“I used to wonder why we don’t see miracles like they had in the bible, but we do.

If we look for them, they’re there.”

She explained that she sees God using what she is going through as a way to slow down.

“I feel like God was telling us, okay guys you need to slow down and remember I’m here.”

She strongly believes that this was God’s way for getting her to spend more time with him.

“This has forced me to slow down and spend more time with God,” Price said.

Overall, she stated that knowing God was with her has made these obstacles much easier.

How to fix any customer service problem %\ &+5,6723+(5 (//,277 *XHVW :ULWHU In a perfect world, caring employees would quickly fix your customer service problems.

We don’t live in a perfect world.

That’s the reason I started writing Problem Solved, a customer service advice column. The premise of the feature is simple: I take a seemingly unsolvable customer service problem — and solve it.

And there are a lot of problems.

The Federal Trade Commission received 3.2 million complaints in 2019, an increase of 200,000 complaints from a year before. It’s just a small fraction of the consumer problems in North America.

The steps to fixing a customer service problem are simple: • Read the fine print before you buy.

• Contact the company and follow their guidelines.

• Appeal your case.

• Find an outside advocate.

• Use the “nuclear” option or go to court.

If you follow the process, chances are you’ll never have to contact me or darken the door of a courtroom. So before we go on, a word of advice: Please don’t skip any of the following steps: 1. Know what you’re buying.

Sounds obvious, right? But it isn’t. Only 1% of consumers read the terms and conditions of their purchase, according to a recent survey by www.proprivacy.com.

Lawyers hide things in the fine print. You may be giving up your rights to a refund or to return the product if you aren’t happy.

Of course, the best way to solve a consumer problem is to ensure

you never have one. So the key to fixing a customer service problem is to familiarize yourself with the product or service you’re buying — particularly the fine print.

2. Get in touch with the company.

Step two — also frequently overlooked — is giving the company a chance to fix the problem.

That means returning to the store or going through the customer service department.

The best way to do that is in writing. Why? Because you have a record of the grievance, and you can forward that record to a supervisor, a lawyer or a consumer advocate.

3. Send a brief, polite appeal to a supervisor.

Companies often train their call center employees to tell you there’s no supervisor — but there’s always a supervisor. and email addresses of the managers online. Send a friendly appeal to one of them and include the company’s previous written correspondence, especially your customer ID and your order number. That will help them find the relevant transaction and hopefully fix it.

4. Find outside help.

If the company won’t help you, it’s time to enlist an outside group’s help. Outside groups can include medical advocates, mediabased advocates such as a TV station’s “On Your Side” segment or a nonprofit organization like mine, Elliott Advocacy.

You’ll want to approach an advocate in the same way you’ve gone through channels so far.

Send a short email outlining your problem. You may need to fill out a form to receive help. Don’t overload the organization with information. Just give it the facts and let them ask for more information if needed.

5. Take it to a higher authority.

If all else fails, contact law enforcement authorities or an attorney and go to court if necessary to resolve your customer service problem. Before you do, there’s one last solution, which I like to call the nuclear option. If you paid by credit card, you may be able to dispute your charges under the Fair Credit Billing Act. Colds have been compared to, among other things, hangovers — the only thing that cures both of them is time.

Youngsters catch a half dozen or so colds a year, while

adults average a couple or so.

During these complex COVID-19 times, it’s difficult to tell if you’ve been attacked by the original virus or a variant, or if you’ve contracted the flu, or if you have a cold.

If you and your doctor have narrowed down your event to

the common cold, what do you take for it?

Home remedies abound.

Many oldsters may remember the mustard plaster: a poultice of mustard-seed powder pressed between two towels and placed over the chest while you slept. It was

supposed to sweat the ills out of your body and stop the cough accompanying your cold.

Also on the cure-yourself list is to totter off to bed with a box of tissue handy for blowing your nose. To help

How can anyone resist the offer of a nice cup of warm tea while wrapped in a shawl and seated in a recliner beside a warm stove.

And, back to the beginning, getting rid of a cold takes nothing but rest and time.

Some heart attacks are sudden and intense. Most start slowly with some sort of discomfort and can be survived if recognized for what they are.

Fortunately, 90% of the people who suffer a heart attack survive the event.

Recognizing the signs early is a major factor.

Most heart attacks start with a minor pain, discomfort or tightness in the center of the chest that just won’t go away. If it does dissipate, it returns shortly after.

It can feel like your chest is being squeezed or is full and it can be painful.

The discomfort can also spread to your stomach or back, into your neck, one or both arms, and your jaw.

You might also experience shortness of breath, with or without discomfort in your chest.

Other signs are dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea and breaking out in a cold sweat.

If you, or anyone near you, is experiencing any of these symptoms, call 911 and get to a hospital immediately.

Heart-attack survivors usually are advised to lose weight, develop an exercise program, maintain a healthy diet, and lower their blood pressure and level of stress.

Honor Flight Cancels October Flights Honor Flight Northeast Indiana has canceled two fall flights planned for Oct. 6 and 27.

After lengthy review and thorough consideration, the Board of Directors of Honor Flight Northeast Indiana has made the difficult decision to cancel the Honor Flights scheduled for the remainder of 2021 due to unforeseen logistical issues and continuing changing COVID protocols that preclude them from flying this fall. The board of directors did not see any opportunity to safely operate flights with the current (and predicted) continuing

increases in infections, hospitalizations, etc.

Veterans and guardians who were originally scheduled for the Oct. 6, Honor Flight from Fort Wayne will automatically be re-scheduled for the April 2022 Honor Flight.

Veterans and guardians who were originally scheduled for the Oct. 27, Honor Flight from Fort Wayne will automatically be re-scheduled for the May 2022 Honor Flight.

Ye Old Drug Stores remembered 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 3$6725 *5(* /$:621 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU Thank goodness Grandma Bowers was a sentimental pack rat and saved practically anything and everything.

In addition to letters, Christmas cards, newspapers and ephemera from as far back as the mid 1800’s, I found a series of unique newsletters Grandma had tucked aside in a mountain of this and that.

The items I found were a half dozen of very rare newsletters published in 1905 by druggist F. M. Fisk of Cassopolis, Mich. Fisk also had a companion store in Edwardsburg which I believe was at the northwest corner of Cass Street and U.S. 112 (now U.S. 12).

As a very small village in 1905, Edwardsburg was indeed quite fortunate to have a drug store at that time. Their building has since been demolished by a suspicious fire.

Also found in Grandma and Grandpa Bowers’ home was a Fisk bottle with raised letters showing Fisk Drugs, Edwardsburg, Mich. This bottle is also extremely rare and perhaps one of the only surviving remnants and memories of Ye Old Drug

Although I have several earlier Fisk newsletters from April, May and June 1905, I have chosen to include a sample of September and October 1905 in this story.

Fisk’s newsletters focused on puzzles, wit, humor and more and it was published free to readers. In addition to drugs and medication, both stores also sold school books, pens and pencils, writing tablets and school supplies, etc. For the ladies, there were soaps, lotions, powders, perfumes and more.

Back in 1905, Grandma and Grandpa could buy a sure-fire “Remedy for sore throats, colds, coughs and all bronchial afflictions.” It was called “Kura Koff” and heaven help us if we, of modern times, knew what the

ingredients were.

On the humorous side, we find “to what age do hogs attain? Sausage.” And through our tears of laughter, there was “Where was the Declaration of Independence signed? At the bottom.”

I must leave you now with this observation of a rural Edwardsburg farm family’s conversation: “Hey boy, where’s your brother? In the barn, shoein’ horses. Where’s your mother? In the back yard shooin’ chickens.

Where’s your father? In the hammock, shooin’ flies.”

Kennedy’s death was ‘The day I died’ On Nov. 22, 1963, entertainer Vaughn Meader got into a cab at the Milwaukee airport.

He later recalled, “The cabbie said, %\ 5$1'$/ ‘Did you hear & +,// about Kennedy in Dallas?’ I said to him, ‘No, how does it go?’ I thought he was telling me a joke.”

Then Meader heard the tragic bulletin on the taxi’s radio. He would refer to it later as “the day I died.”

Famous because of numerous TV appearances and with his face adorning millions of record album covers, he was used to being recognized as America’s top mimic of the president.

In the early 1960s, the New Englander began including JFK impersonations in a musical comedy act he developed for the Greenwich Village club circuit.

Meader found it easy to assume the president’s distinctive accent and persona, and in time even adopted the iconic leader’s hairstyle.

Meader’s debut comedy LP from November 1962 was dubbed “The First Family.” Written by Bob Booker and Earle

Doud, the good-natured Cadence Records parody featured 26-yearold Meader supplying the voices of both JFK and his brother Robert, while Jackie Kennedy was portrayed by theater actress Naomi Brossart. A supporting cast of New York character actors completed the fun.

Tapping into the public’s fascination with the Kennedys, “The First Family,” recorded live before a studio audience, quickly became the fastest-selling album in the history of the record industry. It locked down the top position on the Billboard LP charts for a dozen weeks and by January 1963 had sold 7 million copies. Eventually, it earned a Grammy Award. A March 1963 sequel, “The First Family Volume Two,” became a second hit.

President Kennedy had reportedly enjoyed the sendup — Jackie, not so much — and went so far as to hand out copies of the first LP as Christmas gifts.

On that infamous November Friday afternoon, celebrity Vaughn Meader vanished and was reborn as anonymous Abbott Meader. (Vaughn was his middle name). Copies of his discs were yanked from record store shelves and destroyed, Cadence Records not wanting to appear to be “cashing in” on the tragedy. Meader never did his JFK impression again.

For the next few years, he drifted in and out of alcoholism and drug abuse. In the late 1960s, he experienced a religious awakening and in 1970 recorded an album called “The Second Coming,” on which he played a hip Jesus. It didn’t sell.

Meader married four times and divorced three. In later years, he managed a restaurant in Hallowell, Maine, where he became a part-time singing pianist who offered sometimesperplexed customers a peculiar mix of gospel and bluegrass tunes.

A lifelong smoker, Meader developed chronic pulmonary disease. To help pay his mounting medical expenses, he sold

the movie rights to his life story.

The film was never made.

He died at age 68 in October 2004, his little-noted passing a far cry from the time when JFK

greeted a Democratic Partyevent crowd by wryly announcing with a grin, “Vaughn Meader was busy tonight, so I came myself.”

There’s more to losing weight than dieting %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV More than a third of people 65 and older are obese, according to data collected here and in Europe, and the number is growing. This condition affects both their physical and mental health.

Going on a diet may help, but there are much simpler ways to combat carbs.

A first step is to downsize servings of whatever you eat.

Then adopt the Mediterranean diet — fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, some fish, a little wine and some olive oil.

When snacking, instead of

sitting down with the large family-size bag, pour some of the contents into a cup or small bowl and put the rest of the bag back on the shelf. Instead of noshing on chips or popcorn while watching TV, sit down with some crunchy produce like carrots, celery or apples.

The thing you’ll probably remember the most about Charlie Creek Gardens its the maze. You can literally lose yourself in this grove of 800, 15-foot-tall arborvitaes. There are a couple openings that lead into the maze, wind along narrow paths to a small circular opening and a statue called Centennial Man which was created by artist Matthew Berg.

The topography of the site is interesting. The upper section where the maze and parking lot are located is flat and mostly

open. A short distance from the maze is a trail that takes visitors down into the lower gardens past the 400-gallon-a-minute waterfall, across the creek via the bridge to the wetland bog garden, the flower beds and a wide variety of trees.

One of the features of the lower level is Garfield Wildflower Meadow. It was inspired by Garfield creator Jim Davis and is similar to the meadow outside his Muncie studio. Also a few feet away is the Labyrinth which was designed by artist and sculptor Marty Ker-

It’s a state of mind more than a city; a way of life more than a place to live. All expressed in a poetry that is Key West, a language not spoken anywhere else in the country.

Turn a corner or pass a restaurant and strands of guitar riffs tumble into your eardrums. Or it could be a rooster crowing. They’re everywhere.

Many houses bear a plaque dating to the 1800s. Old Town, the largest predominantly wooden-housed historic district in the country, features almost 3,000 structures and deserves a truth-in-advertising award.

His home is one of the most visited sites in the city. The tiny second-story studio in which he wrote remains exactly as he left it. Photos, books and furnishings reflect his life there of more than a decade in the 1930s. Stuffed heads of animals he shot on safari adorn the walls. Almost as famous as the author was his beloved six-toed cat, Snowball, whose dozens of descendants still prowl the premises.

Another notable but very different personality also lived here, but only in the winter.

Harry S Truman’s (yes, S without a period is his middle name) Little White House has its own colorful history wrapped in tales of lively poker games and “loud Hawaiian shirt” contests the 33rd president enjoyed with staff and guests. It’s also rumored he insisted on downing an early morning “shot of bourbon followed by a large glass of fresh-squeezed Florida orange juice,” allegedly on the advice of

his doctor.

Hemingway, an ardent imbiber himself, would most certainly have approved of his neighbor’s breakfast ritual, which might have made both welcome visitors at Schooner Wharf, which boasts the earliest happy hour in town. It begins at 7:30 a.m. The theory is you can’t actually drink all day if you don’t start early.

While Hemingway hunted game and Truman hunted humor, Mel Fisher hunted treasures. His museum houses them for the visiting public.

The fortune hunter spent 16 years seeking the wrecks of Spanish galleons that sank in 1622 off the coast of Key West.

The $450 million treasure included more than 40 tons of gold and silver, as well as emeralds, Chinese porcelain and other precious artifacts. Just as fascinating as the exhibits is the story of his search for the valuable cache.

Deborah Wright from Mishawaka celebrated her 55th birthday in Frankenmuth, Mich. and shared her trip with us. She is shown at the renowned Palmer Frankenmuth Gateway Arch holding a St. Joseph Senior Life.

Frankenmuth is nicknamed “Michigan’s Little Bavaria” and for good reason. The city has German influences everywhere - from its architecture to its food to its culture-infused festivals.

Franconian-style architecture abounds in Frankenmuth and is exhibited by its many houses and commercial buildings sporting marked timbers in square and “x” patterns. The Glockenspiel Tower is a 35-bell clock tower with dancing figurines which chimes and depicts the story of the Pied Piper of Hamlin multiple times throughout the day. Another demonstration of German influence is shown at the Figurinespiel Tower at the Frankenmuth Cheese Haus. Figurines of children pop out of the tower to tell an animated story about cheese making. A wooden bridge called Holz Brücke spans across the Cass River. It is a spectacle with its 239 feet length, its roof, and the fact that it still carries cars and pedestrians year-round.

Bavarian food and drink is prevalent in Frankenmuth. Zehnder’s and the Bavarian Inn combined serve more than two million of their world famous pint-sized chicken dinners a year. One can learn to make their own hand-rolled German pretzel to enjoy. Boasting many breweries and wineries, travelers can wet their palate with unique flavors. Authentic Hofbraühaus kegs, imported from Germany, are also offered.

Frankenmuth prides itself on its many festivals. Depending on when one travels, the festival could feature cars, beer, ice carving, dog competitions, or hot air balloons, just to name a few. Oktoberfest is a very popular festival. Celebrating German heritage, this festival actually takes place in September.

And if you know of a Christmas fan, or are one yourself, Frankenmuth is the place to go. Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is the world’s largest Christmas store. It is open yearround and has many gifts, decorations, and one-of-a-kinds. Around the town, one can find horse carriage rides, Christmas lights and sounds, a musical tree show and a life-sized nativity.

One can stay busy with all the outdoor and indoor activities in Frankenmuth. It seems like scam artists have been given an opportunity to come up with more realistic scams designed to pick your pockets before you even hit the road.

Part of the problem is the ease with which travel plans can be made online. It’s difficult to tell if a travel agency website is legitimate or lying in wait for victims.

High on the list of travel traps are websites claiming to be able to help you — for a fee — renew or enroll in the Transportation Security pre-check Administration pre ch Customs and program or the Custom global entry Border Patrol’s globa speed you system that spee through airport ssecurity.

When you do get out on the road, avoid connecting your laptop or mobile phone into any Wi-Fi source because hackers around the world sit and wait for the unwary so they can plunder your personal information and clean out your bank or credit card accounts.
