The Dean and Barbara White Community Center, located at 6600 Broadway, Merrillville, is managed and maintained by Merrillville Parks and Recreation. It offers a location to host events, a fitness center, walking track, gym and facilities for youth activities. When needed, it can also serve as

a warming shelter. The center replaced the Pruzin Community Center that had one room for programs, two offices, a small kitchen and restrooms. The fitness center membership and open gym are free to Merrillville residents. “The decision to make these two areas free to residents was decided on because the residents already pay taxes that go to the community center,” said Recreation Supervisor Brandon Beno. Nonresidents have the option to pay for a day pass or a one-month or three-month fitness pass or membership. “Between the parks and recre-
