App allows Elkhart County residents to record

%\ 6+(/%< +$55(// 6WDII :ULWHU “Stories are the most important component in the fabric of life,” said Elkhart County resident Larry App. “They are how we learn and how we make sense of the world around us.”

His work as founder and soleproprietor of Stories Retold, a small documentary production company, affords clients the opportunity to weave legacies that inspire members of future generations. “I believe that stories are incredibly important and powerful ways to learn a variety of different things,” said App. “If I can help somebody tell their story using video, that’s what I do.”

The idea behind Stories Retold came from a desire to create an additional stream of income during the economic recession that occurred throughout the late 2000s. “For some reason, these videos came up,” said App, who worked as an accountant at the time. “I use a different side of my brain, so I’ve enjoyed paralleling the work I did in accounting alongside that since 2006.”

App conducts his interviews in a way that is most comfortable for each storyteller. “I usually start out with questions like ‘What is your full name? Where were you born? How many brothers and sisters did you have?’ And similar kinds of things.

After that, I can ask them some questions that are a little deeper and require some thought.”

One of his favorite questions to ask interviewees is what they remember about their grandparents. “When I

interview these people in this way, I’m really hearing about the generation before them,” App explained.

“These people who are gone are telling me stories through their living relatives.”

The documentarian has amassed an extensive collection of his own family’s historical records. While conducting his research, App came across an account of his family’s settlement within the American Midwest. He found the story of ancestor John Mathias App, who ventured west during the California Gold Rush in 1850, particularly enthralling.

Working as a clerk in his father’s hardware store, John Mathias was able to efficiently assemble his wagon. “He kept a handwritten diary in which he wrote down all of the supplies he took as well as the cost of each item,” said App. “He was very Continued on page 2

Walls a part of Special Olympics Kosciusko County for 50 years %\ .(,7+ .1(33 (GLWRU Being a part of Special Olympics is something that has almost always been a part of Becky Walls’s life.

Now a resident of Pierceton, Walls serves as the Special Olympics Kosciusko County Coordinator, a position she’s held for 23 years.

In her role with SOKC, Walls oversees a year-round program that includes numerous Kosciusko County volunteers and athletes who participate in a variety of sports, including track and field, basketball, bocce and bowling. The men and women in the program range in generation from teenagers to seniors. While it is said the program is for individuals up to age 99, Walls insists if there is a 100-year-old out there who wants to participate they’ll definitely accommodate them. What they all have in common, though, is that all the athletes have some form of intellectual disability. While some might also have physical disabilities, that criterion alone does not qualify an individual for participation.

Last month, Walls led a contingent of 27 Kosciusko

County athletes and 10 adult volunteers to the 2022 Indiana Summer Olympic Games, held on the campus of Indiana State University in Terre Haute. Among other highlights, participants had the opportunity to stay in a college dormitory and be part of an opening ceremony inside Hulman Center, the school’s major indoor athletics venue. Throughout the three-day event, the athletes have the opportunity to compete in their sport against others from around the Hoosier State.

Walls has been making the trip for many years, both in the summer as well as for the winter games during other half of the year.

She admits the weekend is exhausting, especially as she has gotten older, but is always well worth her time and effort when she sees the joy the competitions bring to the individuals in her group.

“The athletes get to play in sports in which they otherwise might not be able to compete,” said Walls. “They get to travel and do things people with disabilities don’t always get to do. They look forward to seeing people they have met at past games, too.

“As we’re making our way

home from the games, many of them are already asking when they can do it again.

They love participating and can’t wait to go back!”

Walls has been a part of SOKC since its inception in 1973. Her mother, Maxine Burcham, began the program that year through her employer, Cardinal Services.

Walls helped her mother in various roles before starting the bowling program in 1988.

Burcham died in 1996, which led Walls to taking a larger role with the track and field program. Eventually, in 1999, Walls became the county coordinator, a job she has held dear since.

Burcham and Walls each had a personal interest in Special Olympics, as two of Walls siblings had intellectual disabilities.

Another part of Walls’ role within SOKC is fundraising.

Each year she is responsible for raising between $10,000$12,000 to pay for the program. Many local businesses, foundations and individuals help her reach her financial goals.

He subsequently traversed one of several main roads that terminated in Kearney, NE. He then followed the CaliforniaOregon trail, using the Platte River as a reference point before reaching Grass Valley and Nevada City. “It was in this general area where he met his future wife Leanna Charity Donner, who was the second oldest surviving daughter of George and Tamsen Donner,” App said in his blog at blog.storiesretold. com/a-gold-rush-adventure/.

“George was the leader of the Donner Party, a group of people who were trapped in the Sierras

from October of 1846 until April of 1847.”

In 2003, App used the diary entries to follow John Mathias’s westward route. “I divided the trip into five segments and, along the way, I have kept maps and recorded GPS way points so that anyone can follow his route to experience the same views the travelers had,” App said in his blog.

Though App has recently reduced the number of clients he works with, he plans to continue for the foreseeable future. “When you die, are people going to remember what you did for a living or whether you were good at it?”

App asked. “Maybe they will, but they’ll always remember if you were a nice person, a kind neighbor or a good friend.”

Shively enjoys small-town life in Wakarusa %\ .(,7+ .1(33 (GLWRU Life in a small town certainly has its benefits. Those benefits are made even better when there are strong leaders in the forefront.

For the past 13 years, the town of Wakarusa has benefitted from having Deb Shively as one of those leaders.

Shively serves as the executive secretary for the Wakaruasa Chamber of Commerce. Prior to that, she served in a similar role at the Nappanee Chamber of Commerce, assisting thenDirector Larry Andrews for nine years.

The office structure in Wakarusa is a little bit different than in most chambers.

Instead, it relies on a volunteer board of 12 people with Shively providing support as its only paid employee.

Shively made the move following the retirement of Doris Biller in 2009. The job change also allowed Shively to double her working hours from 15 to 30 per week. With her kids heading off to college, she found herself with more time to work, which made the new position a perfect opportunity.

Along with the job change, Shively and her husband, Steve, moved from Nappanee to Wakarusa, where they have lived ever since.

“I’ve always had a sense of community,” said Shively.

“It gives me joy to see people working together for a common good.”

For the first 10 years in Wakarusa, Shively was in charge of the annual Maple Syrup Festival, which takes place each April. She gave up those duties following the 2019 event, saying that it had become too much for her to do.

“I couldn’t eat, sleep and drink the festival anymore,” she said. “It was stealing my

joy. I’ve also cut my hours back to 15 each week.”

Now, the festival is run by a group of volunteers, with duties delegated among them.

Shively still helps out from her role at the chamber, but her responsibilities and commitments have been greatly reduced, much to her approval. As fate would have it, the 2020 festival was cancelled because of COVID, but has been back at full strength the last two years.

“It was a good time for me to transition and to step back and let others take control,” she said. “I still organize many other events for the chamber, including the Easter egg hunt, fall party and ‘Christmas Around the Tree.’ My job is to dot all the Is and cross all the Ts. I have a lot of help from the chamber board members.

We all work together to make the events happen.”

The chamber’s newest major

project is “Doc’s Downtown Pavilion,” in honor of Wakarusa-legend Dr. Robert Abel, who died in 2017. The new building broke ground last month and will eventually play host to many of Wakarusa’s events.

The past year has been difficult for the Shivelys.

Steve contracted COVID last fall and was hospitalized for 26 days. Her youngest child, Alex, also contracted COVID and died at age 30 on Sept.

14, 2021, in the middle of his father’s hospitalization. After his hospital discharge, Steve had to endure seven weeks of home health care. Deb also contracted COVID after Alex’s death, which made the grieving process even more difficult.

The Shivelys weren’t able to hold a viewing until October and the funeral was delayed until November.

The Shivelys have two other children, one who lives in Wakarusa and the other in Fish-

ers. They also enjoy their six grandchildren, who are split between the two locations.

Shively said she doesn’t have any immediate plans to

leave the chamber, although she noted that her husband is planning to retire next year, which may change her thoughts on that matter.

The 1930s —

An innocent child’s Black Valentine %\ '5 *5(* /$:621 3DVWRU 0 0LQ 06: *XHVW :ULWHU It was a time in history that I would never experience, but my mother and her two eldest of five brothers would surely live through.

My time would come several decades later in the 1960s.

A time would occur with the innocence of children, I believe, in a one-room schoolhouse in Mason Township, Cass County, Mich., just north of Elkhart County.

Going through a box of old letters, Christmas cards and dozens of miscellaneous and sentimental memorabilia, I came across one item of particular interest. I opened a small envelope on which was written the name of my now deceased uncle: “To Dorman from Arlene.” Inside, was a

Valentine’s Day card that depicted the caricature of a young Black girl.

Given the 1930s was a decade of racism throughout America, how do we interpret this now 90-plus-year-old card? Mason and Calvin townships in Cass County were a mixture of white pioneers from the early 1800s, and later in the mid-1800s via the underground railroad came the Black settlers.

Some questions related to this probably rare card are these: Was it given to my uncle, from Arlene, at a school or church Valentine’s Day party and was Arlene white or black. There simply is nobody alive today who can solve the mystery. Quite likely, in the mind of a child in the 1930s, this card was nothing more than an innocent gift from one child to another.

Here’s a situation we have seen occur too many times. A couple goes to the effort to attend one of our dinner workshops and schedules a free consultation appointment to meet with one of our attorneys. However, they never come in for their appointment and do any planning. Later, when one or both become incapacitated or dies, their children find our seminar handouts in their parents’ desk drawer, marked up with their notes. The children come in to see us about handling their parents’ estate matters. Robocallers have your number %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV There’s still no foolproof way to eliminate robocallers and scam artists from getting to your phone, because robots and crooks never sleep.

The high-water mark for these computer-dialed calls is 190 million in a single day but the daily average is about 1,500 a second, offering everything from extending the warranty on your car to lottery winnings for a small up-front handling fee.

Modern technology has made it easy for telephone thieves to amass lists of phone numbers they feed into computers and await results.

The reason some 50 billion calls are made each year is because as many as 5 percent of them are answered and the

respondents wind up being bilked out of thousands of dollars.

Simply put, this schemers’ system works.

Just picking up the phone and answering gives the scammers an edge. They know you’re home at that time and that the number is legitimate.

And every other robocaller in the neighborhood finds that out, too.

The strong defense is to have caller ID. If you don’t recognize the name or number, just walk away. Legitimate callers, such as a family member or friend or an important contact such as a doctor’s office, will leave a message and number to call.

If you recognize the caller, you can pick up the phone in mid-message and explain why you waited to answer. Be

aware, however, that many crooked callers identify themselves as someone you may be dealing with and you can still become a victim of a scam.

Paranoia pays in these situations.

You can list your number on the national Do Not Call registry, but that only bars legitimate marketers. Calls from crooks will keep on coming.

Blocking specific numbers doesn’t help all that much because unethical telemarketers have a way to make it appear their calls are coming from a different number.

If you do have a conversation with a caller, you can protect yourself by pointing out you’re busy at the moment and ask for a number to call them back. If they won’t give you one, hang up.

set of problems, including a rapidly spreading and more diverse set of diseases, increased spending of time and money on health and long-term care, labor shortages and steadily rising inflation chewing away at old-age income.

Adding calluses to the problem is the fact that Social Security payments will probably be lowered when the surplus in the trust funds is depleted.

The $2.9 trillion in reserves reported in 2020 is expected to be spent by in 2034 — a year earlier than previously estimated.

When that happens, benefits payments will probably be slashed by about 25% if adjustments aren’t made in the meantime. This is happening because the millennium surge into the retirement age and the dwindling labor force that has Social Security support deducted from their paychecks.

Simply, fewer workers are paying for more Social Security recipients. While every elected official in Washington and every economist in the country knows the problem exists, no one has made any moves to fix all or part of it.

This is a global problem. Not only are populations aging, they’re having fewer kids. The younger generations are diminishing — fewer workers — while the oldsters are getting more numerous — more folks needing economic support.

A man on the run

For Goshen resident Doug Walter, it all started with a newspaper article and an impulsive idea. With his “Why not give it a shot?” attitude, Walter set off on a journey that would take him across the finish line of a marathon in every state. Upon completion of his 50th marathon, the 2008 Honolulu Marathon, Walter officially became a member of the 50 States Marathon Club.

An avid biker, Walter maintained his active lifestyle into his late 20s. “About 20 years ago or better I worked with a guy who ran and I had seen the results of the recent Sunburst Marathon in the South Bend Tribune,” said Walter. “I said ‘I think I’m going to start running’, and so I started running.” In 2009, Walter played a pivotal role in establishing the Two Rivers Running Club. “It was pretty revolutionary,” said Walter. “There were no other organized running programs in the area at the time.”

Walter’s status as a participant enables him to maintain

an active schedule throughout the summer months. “Somebody from the club puts on group runs at 6:30 p.m. each Monday throughout June and July in Bristol,” said Walter. “It’s basically an invitation for runners to come up, run for 45 minutes and log their miles.” The course consists of a one mile loop marked out throughout the park’s trail system. “The club awards ribbons to participants who hit different mileage milestones,” said Walter. “Kids only need to log 5 miles throughout the summer. If a kid comes out with Mom and Dad and wants to go out and run a quarter mile, half mile or mile they can do that.” Adults will receive a ribbon for every 10 miles ran.

One of his most interesting adventures saw Walter complete a marathon every month for approximately 4 1/2 years.

“It was a little bit of a logistics nightmare trying to find a race and getting the things I need while trying to save money,” Walter chuckled. “I had to share rides with people from all over the country, and there was just a lot of work in keeping track of everything let alone doing all

the running.”

Of the extensive list of marathons on Walter’s resume, the Hatfield McCoy Marathon remains a particular favorite.

The race, which begins outside Food City in South Williamson, Ky., and ends in downtown Williamson, WV, offers warm weather, a festive atmosphere and a unique opportunity for participants. “As far as the 50 State Marathon Club goes, you can count it for either one state or the other,” said Walter. “It’s a tough course, but they treat you pretty good.”

Anyone who wishes to complete a marathon is strongly advised by Walter to undergo at least 18 weeks of training.

“You start at maybe 8 or 9 mile long runs, and then you gradually step it up until you’re doing 18 to 20 miles on the last couple of weeks,” Walter recommended. “If you really want to try to get a good time, put in some track workouts for speed work.”

In addition, Walter urges runners of all ages to listen to their bodies and take into consideration what they might be trying to tell them. Initially hesitant

Upon turning age 65, most people qualify for Medicare Parts A, B and D. The Medicare premium for Part B, which pays for doctors’ visits and outpatient services, is $170.10 a month for most seniors in 2022 and the premium for Part D which pays for prescriptions is $33.00 a month for most seniors in 2022. However, seniors who have high-income will pay a surcharge from $238.10 to $578.30 each month for Part B and D if they have high adjusted gross income two years earlier. Seniors are subject to a Medicare premium surcharge in 2022 if their modified adjusted gross income in 2020 exceeded $91,000 for a single person and $182,000 for a married couple filing jointly.

The current Medicare premium is based on the “modified adjusted gross income” from two years earlier. However, if one can

Side salads increase vegetable intake

In my house we have several go-to side salads that increase our eating of raw vegetables, and I am always scoping out recipes to add to the variety.

I came across a recipe for a Southern broccoli salad in our local paper and decided that with a few modifications I could make a vegan version — and am I ever glad I did. It was delicious, and I have made it

twice in eight days. In addition, I am serving it to about 60 people this weekend, and even though the recipe calls for crisp bacon and diced cheddar cheese, I have decided to serve it totally vegan because it is simply awesome without the added ingredients. (Said no bacon lover — ever).

In the quest to eat one pound of cooked veggies and one pound of raw veggies each day, this salad is a total winner.

Eating raw vegetables may improve your access to many vitamins, such as water-soluble vitamin C and many of the B vitamins. Heating can kill many enzymes within these plants that may be beneficial for digestion as well, so in the goal of just eating more vegetables, include both raw and cooked, but not overcooked. It’s always about the gut biome.

Southern Broccoli Salad – revised: 3 stalks of raw broccoli (typically it is sold bundled in 3 stalks) ½ cup Craisins (dried cranberries) ½ cup quartered cherry or thumb tomatoes ½ cup rough chopped roasted pecans (I have used raw pecans, now I throw them in a nonstick pan and toast them up and that adds a lovely roast nut flavor that enhances the salad). Seeds could also be added. ¾ cup vegan mayonnaise (I used Follow Your Heart Vegenaise) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar (I used cane sugar) Pinch of kosher salt Pinch of pepper

Omitted from original recipe: 6 pieces crispy bacon and 4 ounces of diced/cubed cheddar cheese.

Directions: Other than toasting the pecans and the dressing, this is an everybodyin-the-pool recipe.

You will only be using the floret portion of the broccoli cut into bite-sized pieces. Then add quartered tomatoes, cranberries, pecans and pinch of salt and pepper.

For the dressing, mix vegan mayo, apple cider vinegar and sugar. The vegan mayo is a little thinner than traditional mayo and for this salad, that works perfectly to help bring out the flavor of all the other ingredients. Add to salad and mix. You could try plain yogurt if you would rather.

You could eat this right away, but letting it sit in the fridge for a couple of hours helps the vinegar disperse and the flavors meld together.

Enjoy the local summer produce and experiment with fresh raw side dishes. Stay well.

Moviemakers said ‘It’s just not “commercial”’ The indefatigable Bruce Brown wasn’t about to give up on his movie project.

After being rebuffed by %\ 5$1'$/ Hollywood & +,// distributors, Brown chose to throw himself wholeheartedly into getting the documentary, “The Endless Summer,” out to the general public, even though it could spell financial ruin for him.

Brown was born in San Francisco in 1938 and grew up in Long Beach. After high school, he joined the Navy and was assigned to a base in Hawaii, where he filmed fellow surfers with an 8mm movie camera. Back home in California, he became a beach lifeguard and an amateur filmmaker. Beginning in the late 1950s, he created five short 16mm surfing movies in five years, screening them later to rapt audiences at local high schools and rented halls.

In 1962, Brown came up with the story idea that would

become “The Endless Summer.”

His feature would focus on two young surfers traveling the globe and following the summer season while chasing down the perfect wave. It would be a fantasy come true for any surfer.

The story would star two topnotch local wave jockeys — Robert August, 18, and Mike Hynson, 20. (Both had appeared in some of Brown’s earlier works.)

August had been a straightA student body president at Huntington Beach High School; Hynson was a cocky “loose cannon” trying to stay one step ahead of his draft board.

The three departed Los Angeles in November 1963 and returned three months later after crossing the equator four times and visiting eight foreign lands.

August and Hynson became surfboard makers while the moviemaker set about editing approximately 9 miles of celluloid. (Armed with a 20-pound windup 16mm camera, Brown had a meager 50 feet of film available for each shoot before having to reload.)

Roadblocks loomed large for Brown when he finished his movie. In 1964, when he approached Tinseltown movie distributors, they all but

While “The Endless Summer” did feature incredible surfing scenes, Brown’s friendly, wisecracking narration and a decent instrumental soundtrack by The Sandals surf band, the distributors opined that it simply wasn’t “commercial” enough to go nationwide. But, in his heart, its creator knew his feature would appeal to surfers and non-surfers alike.

Brown took matters into his

own hands, aware that this option involved a huge financial gamble. He and a partner borrowed $50,000 (about $300,000 in today’s money) to enlarge the film to 35mm. He rented a theater in landlocked Wichita, Kan., in the dead of winter. “The Endless Summer” sold out each of its showings for two straight weeks.

Movie world bean counters, however, continued to shrug their shoulders.

Brown then persuaded a Manhattan theater to give “The Endless Summer” a oneweek tryout. It ran for a year, with about 20% of attendees being repeat ticket buyers.

The movie was picked up for national (and, later, worldwide) distribution, eventually earning $20 million.

“The Endless Summer” became a cultural turning point and the most influential documentary ever about surfing.

I am addicted to all dollar stores. But now with this price increase, maybe it’s time to break my habit. Years ago, when pay phones went from 10 cents to a quarter, that was the last phone booth I ever walked into, except to check the little coin return to see if anyone had left any change in it.

Let me pause here while younger readers Google what a phone booth is. By the way, for older folks, just so you know, the five-and-dime store has also raised their prices.

Several weeks ago, I was in a dollar store in my neighborhood, unaware this seismic shift in my budget was about to occur. I waited for the cashier to ring up my purchases, though I thought I knew exactly what the total would be. I kept track of how many purchases I was about to make, and I even know to how multiply 1 x 16.

“Wait, how could the total be $20? I only bought 16 items!”

“Everything is $1.25 now, sir.”

“Even a can of okra?”

“Sir, if you really like okra, why not just spring for the extra 25 cents?”

“Because I hate okra. Everyone hates okra. I was buying it because it was a dollar. How about those helium balloons?

How much are those?”

“Everything is $1.25, sir.”

“Okay, I understand the increase with food, but why did balloons go up?”

“Because we put helium in them.”

Frustrated, I wandered around the store putting my willpower to the test. At a buck and a quarter, could I resist a half gallon of generic cola, a set of three screwdrivers, sunglasses, or five pounds of dog food? Hey, we could get a dog someday.

I wondered if I should start a support group for people like me who are getting sucked into an increasingly more costly addiction.

My support group would have six steps to recovery: 1. Admit you are powerless to pass up a dollar bag of ginger snaps.

2. Resist the notion that lower prices are a higher power.

3. Never question the price of goodness.

4. Share your story with others so they can be savers as well.

5. Pray the $1.25 stores never go to $1.50.

6. Before buying on impulse, look deeply inside your shelf to be sure of what you really need.

As I was finishing this column, I saw a rumor online that the dollar store may revert to the old dollar price for some select items that are less popular.

My goal now is to find a really good okra cookbook.

In 2022, Goshen Health began participating in DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Awards, an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. Angela Studebaker nominated Starla Martin, RN, on the oncology unit. Studebaker wrote: “As a trauma survivor and a patient with severe pneumonia, nights were hard during my 26day stay in January. Starla became my regular nurse. She always went the extra mile to help me feel safe and cared for. I’d wake up often and push my call light or call her name if I thought she was in the room. I would often apologize for bothering her.

She would say, ‘You’re not bothering me! I enjoy taking care of you!’ She always had a huge smile on her face when saying it. In the wee hours of the morning, we would talk and laugh.

One morning I was apologizing, and she said ‘You’re the reason I come to work each night. Angela, what would I do without you!’ I will never forget that moment. I knew I mattered.”

“We are so pleased to honor the compassion of our nursing Colleagues through the DAISY Award,” said Julie Crossley, Goshen Health chief nursing officer.

“We are inspired by the difference Starla made during a difficult period of Angela’s life, when she especially needed that extra support and caring.”

‘School’s out for summer...’

As a boy, $ %RRPHU %ODVW 7R 7KH 3DVW Vincent %\ 5$1'$/ Furnier & +,// loved to watch old movies on one of Phoenix’s independent TV stations. The Bowery Boys comedy flicks were a special favorite. In one particular story, when one of the characters does something (typically) stupid, a buddy taunts him with, “Hey, school’s out!”

Furnier liked the way that phrase sounded when he rolled it around in his mind.

Little did he know that years later it would fuel his first million-selling single as Alice Cooper when he co-wrote “School’s Out” with fellow musician Michael Bruce.

Picture a pre-fame Alice Cooper as a teenager. You might cast him as a nerd and the laughing stock of Phoenix’s Cortez High School. But in reality, Furnier was quite the big man on campus there.

He set school records as a varsity cross-country runner.

He wrote a popular column (“Get Outta My Hair!”) for the school newspaper.

He and some fellow trackand-field jocks formed a rock band called the Spiders. And when they cut a Furnier-led single — a punkish ditty called “Don’t Blow Your Mind” — on a tiny local label, it rocketed to No. 1 on Phoenix radio in 1966, Furnier’s senior year. “We owned that school. We owned everything

about it,” he has boasted.

“I had a great time in high school. I was Ferris Bueller!”

“School’s Out” became the seventh single release by Alice Cooper, at the time the name of both the lead singer and his backup band. It was the only 45 issued from Cooper’s fifth album, not surprisingly called “School’s Out.” The obstreperous disc opens with a screechy, fingernails-on-the-blackboard lead guitar line. Then comes a loping bass guitar and a thumping drum that combine to drive the high-octane offering for three-and-a-half chaotic minutes.

Predictably, record-buying teens loved it. And why not?

Who didn’t look forward to summer vacation, three sublime months shrilly announced by the rapid-fire clanging of a bell that promised endless possibilities of a school-free, sunshine-bathed

Traveling alone has its own allure %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV Travel can lose much of its allure after losing your lifelong partner that shared the sites and sights you encountered around the globe over the years.

There’s no longer someone to share views and viewpoints with, or to recall and recount the memories with when you return home. And many suddenly-singles don’t relish the thought of returning to a favorite voyage or villa without the person they enjoyed it with over the years.

As a result, many folks in this position simply tuck travel into the bag of things they no longer do.

This is at a time when, for the first time in their lives, they probably can travel to wherever they choose to and

stay as long as they wish.

Most can recall chatting with a solo traveler or two over the years. One long-time friend has flown to several countries and cities without any reservations and rents a room or apartment for several weeks to soak in the culture and cuisine of the land.

Another acquaintance spends most of the year on freighters that take them anywhere at any time on comfortable cruises. All they have to do is make a few phone calls to find a ship and schedule that sounds interesting.

Both of these individuals are examples of how independent they can be in the type and time of travel they choose.

For the less independent or adventurous, there are tours designed to accommodate single people on the road.

If you don’t feel like going it alone, you can book tours for ski trips, museum visits, cooking schools, national parks and almost anything you can envision.

Some of the bumps on the traveling-alone road include finding time to go off on your own during the tour you’ve booked with a group, how to avoid paying the single supplement charged by hotels and cruise ships, as well as getting along with roommates on the trip.

Some cruise lines have begun offering single-only rooms and salons where solo travelers can gather.

Solo travel takes a bit more planning and preparation, especially if it’s your first time.

You might get a lot of helpful hints from other singles on the road.

$/,&( &223(5 season? Here in America, Cooper’s bratty, tongue-incheek single reached Billboard’s Top 10 and became a No. 1 winner in England.

Some of the song’s lyrics are, well, “different”: “School’s out for summer, school’s out forever, school’s been blown to pieces” Probably the most deft line, though, is: “We’ve got no class, and we’ve got no principles” Predictably, many adults railed against the irreverent record, and some radio stations refused to play it.

Cooper’s song has now joined

the ranks of such other anti-school classics as Chuck Berry’s “School Day” and Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall.”

Cooper’s action packed concerts — as much modern vaudeville as “shock rock” — are a mash-up of comedy, horror and music, and Cooper often ends his shows with “School’s Out.” In an Esquire magazine interview, Cooper said, “When we did ‘School’s Out,’ I knew we had just done the national anthem, (that) I’ve become the Francis Scott Key of the last day of school!”

Oldsters over 50 years of age enjoy better mental and physical health if they volunteer at least 200 hours of their time over a 12-month period, according to a Carnegie Mellon University report.

But volunteers should be serious because other studies indi-

cate that half-hearted volunteer work doesn’t help your health at all. In fact, seniors who had low or medium engagement in their volunteer work recorded lower well-being than folks who did no volunteering at all.

Volunteering also gives people a sense of purpose, which also contributes to their health and longevity.

Melissa Etheridge coming to Lerner Theatre Friends of the Lerner is pleased to announce Melissa Etheridge: One Way Out Tour coming to The Lerner Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 8. Tickets are currently on sale.

Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, which led to an appearance on the 1989 Grammy Awards show. For several years, her popularity grew around such memorable originals as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy,” for which she won a Grammy in 1992.

She hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, “Yes I Am” in 1993. The collection featured the massive hits, “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance.

In 1995, Etheridge issued her highest charting album, “Your Little Secret,” which was distinguished by the hit single, “I Want to Come Over.” Her astounding success that year led to Etheridge receiving the Songwriter of the Year honor at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996.

Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America’s favorite female singer-songwriters for more than two decades. In February 2007, Etheridge celebrated a career milestone with a victory in the “Best Song” category at the Academy Awards for “I Need to Wake Up,” written for the Al Gore documentary on global

warming, “An Inconvenient Truth.”

As a performer and songwriter, Etheridge has shown herself to be an artist who has never allowed “inconvenient truths” to keep her down. Earlier in her recording career, Etheridge acknowledged her sexual orientation when it was considered less than prudent to do so. In October 2004, Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer, a health battle that, with her typical tenacity, she won. Despite losing her hair from chemotherapy, Etheridge appeared on the 2005 Grammy telecast to sing “Piece of My Heart” in tribute to Janis Joplin. By doing so she gave hope to many women afflicted with the disease.

On October 7, 2016, Etheridge released “Memphis Rock & Soul,” her first album since 2014’s critically lauded “This Is M.E.” Recorded at Royal Studios in Memphis, the album received stellar reviews from the likes of Entertainment Weekly, Parade, Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and more. She followed

that up with the release of “The Medicine Show” in April 2019. In it, she reunited with celebrated producer John Shanks and sounds as rousing as ever, bringing a new level of artistry to her 15th studio recording. The album deals with universal themes of renewal, reconciliation, reckoning, compassion and, most profoundly, healing.

In June 2020, Etheridge launched her own live streaming subscription and single ticket concert platform, Etheridge TV. Etheridge plays five unique shows Tuesday-Saturday at 6 p.m. and has done over 200 live streams in 2020.

On Sept. 17, 2021, Ehteridge released a new album called One Way Out. The nine-track album is a collection of songs Etheridge wrote in the late 1980s and early 1990s that never made the cut, until now.

The Four Winds Invitational is part of the Epson Tour, which entered its 42nd year of structured competition in 2022 and is the most established women’s qualifying tour in the world as the one “Road to the LPGA.”

Volunteers are needed to fill a variety of roles including assisting with scoring duties and serving as building attendants, caddies, cart drivers, driving range attendants, food and beverage servers, marshals and spotters, parking attendants, standard bearers, shuttle drivers and more.

A ministry of sending out warmth 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Purple Hearts Ministry at Calvary United Methodist Church in Syracuse has been providing a little warmth for those who need it since 2016.

The group of four main workers — Carol Elder, Jan Rose, Linda O’Connor and Vaunda Huffer — along with “as high as 35 to 40 members of the church who support us,” according to Elder, have given away 556 blankets to emergency response departments, hospitals and other organizations that serve their communities.

The ladies work with donated or purchased material and sew together blankets with tied edges. Though now on summer hiatus, the ministry will resume its work meetings 9-11:30 a.m. the first and third Monday of each month, beginning in September. Anyone is welcome to join.

Other organizations get involved in the blanket making process. “Two weeks ago the Key Club at Wawasee High School made 10 blankets,” Elder said. “They pulled an allnighter at the school.”

The ministry has donated blankets to the New Paris and Turkey Creek fire departments to give to victims of fires and other traumas and emergencies.

They have also supplied blankets to The American Legion veteran’s home in Indianapolis, Miller’s Merry Manor in Syracuse, Parkview Hospital in Warsaw and the Beaman Home.

When Compass, the benevolence arm of the Syracuse-Wawasee Ministerial Association, recently sponsored a plastic tote project, where churches filled totes with toiletry and other personal items to distribute to needy students at local schools, members of Calvary’s congregation filled 16 totes and “we put a blanket in each one,” said Elder.

Blankets have also been sent to Ohio, New Orleans and Texas.

“If anyone knows anyone who is alone, shut in or is in need, who we can benefit, we will be happy to provide them,” said Elder, who noted anyone willing to help make the blankets or donate material or finances to the effort should call the church at (574) 457-3778.

South Shore Poster Series 25th anniversary South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority has announced the 25th Anniversary of Just Around the Corner South Shore Poster Series.

This series had its first formal public announcement on June 10, 1997, and was coincident with the announcement of the publication of the book “Moonlight in Duneland,” a pictorial collection of South Shore Line posters of the 1920s, photographs of the era and the history of the South Shore Line, in part illustrated by Mitch Markovitz.

The posters were created to encourage leisure travel to northern Indiana, increasing ridership as well as turning those leisure riders into daily commuters — focusing on the speed and ease of the South Shore Line travel.

“These posters are a way for us to directly showcase our many South Shore attractions, events and destinations that are available,” says David Uran, president

and CEO at the SSCVA. “The colorful and ‘romantic’ poster series often features the Indiana Dunes National Park and the Dunes State Park — depicting our various seasons, events, holidays and beautiful views of northern Indiana.”

Wade through long-term care costs %\ &(&,/ 6&$*/,21( 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV It may turn out you need long-term care for only a short time, but it’s a critical health care term in all our lives.

It normally deals with the last months or years of your life and those around you.

Researchers, both independent and those supported by insurance companies, agree on one thing: most people are not well-informed about long-term care and its implications for both their physical and fiscal health.

The problem grows larger as our population ages — current 65-year-olds are expected to live another quarter century

— and as myths and misconceptions about this misunderstood matter grow more widespread.

Almost 70% of Americans are worried about paying for long-term care, according to a National Council on Aging report, compared with some 55% who are concerned about paying for their retirement.

Four out of 10 people 65 or older believe Medicare or Medigap pays for long-term nursing home stays, according to a Financial Planning Association study.

The reality is Medicare will pay for a limited number of days for “short term” nursing home care under certain circumstances. It does not pay for

long-term custodial care.

Another popular myth is Medicaid picks up the tab for long-term care. It does pick up 50% of the tab if you’re poor enough to qualify. In addition, your income from Social Security and other pension must go toward the bill.

Adding more pain to the process is the confusion within the long-term care insurance industry.

Premiums veer drunkenly in all directions and criteria for coverage can make as much sense as the miniaturized motherboard of a modern computer.

don’t get sunburn, they feel all is well. What they’re doing is burning their skin.

Exposure to the sun’s ultra violet rays can do hidden damage that may take years to emerge. The other main cause of skin cancer is the use of tanning salons.

Medical experts expect more than 4 million cases of skins cancer to be diagnosed each year. One out of five adults will develop some form of skin cancer by the time they reach 70 years of age. As many as half of these cases can progress to melanoma, the most serious stage of skin cancer.

The good news is that if cancerous skin cancer is detected early, it can be removed simply, painlessly and with the likelihood that it will not return.

You also can protect yourself by being sun smart.

You wouldn’t go out in the rain without an umbrella or raincoat to keep you from getting wet, so why do you head

outdoors without any protection from the constant outpouring of ultra violet rays. A dermatologist told me long ago that she applies sun screen to her skin, just like lotion, after she takes her shower.

She pointed out that those harmful rays pass through the windows of her house, her car, her office and the shops she visits.

A friend told me his dermatologist strongly recommended surgery, “To sew a cap on my head.”

Those skin-damaging rays also pour through the clouds when you think the sun don’t shine. They even sneak through clothing that isn’t sun-protection-factor rated.

What this all means is you can’t hide from the sun.

You risk skin damage when you’re on the ski slopes but you’re increasing the risk immeasurably lolling on a tropical beach wearing the skimpiest swimsuit you can find.

You should minimize the time you spend outdoors during the daytime, especially during the hot months.

Sitting in the shade may not be all that safe either. Water, sand, pavement and any other smooth surface reflects those damaging UV rays.

If you’re a runner or biker or participate in other outdoor activities, wear your sunscreen and stay indoors between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

A good rule is to stay in if you step outside and your shadow is shorter than you are.

The annual cost of a similar policy in another state with a lifetime benefit term and 20-day elimination period can range from $4,600 and $5,500.

Long-term care insurers cannot agree on a standard method for satisfying the “elimination period” — the initial period when the policyholder must pay for medical expenses out of their own pocket.

In some coverages, the policyholder who receives care on two days out of a week will have satisfied only two days of the elimination period. In other policies, the consumer will have satisfied seven days and be that much closer to receiving benefits.

The problem becomes exacerbated as the baby boomers age. National Council on Aging figures indicate 20% of the population will be older than 65 by 2030. And a nursing home stay that would cost $40,000 today will likely cost $97,000 in inflation-adjusted dollars by that time.

A 45-year-old who will need

nursing home care when they are 85 years old must save almost $500,000 to pay for a two-year stay, according to council estimates. They will have to sock away $3,500 a year to achieve that goal.

The council has some tips to help you shop for long-term health care insurance.

The first thing to do is take your time and do some homework on the policies and their problems.

Then pick a reputable independent sales person who can sell policies for several companies.

Check the stability of the companies whose policies you’re considering.

If you’re under 75, you should consider buying 5% compounded-inflation protection. You don’t want to buy such a policy if you’re younger than 60 because you could be paying premiums for years on coverage that eventually becomes outdated. But don’t wait too long, because rates climb sharply after 60.

Then thoroughly read a specimen policy contract and make sure you understand what you’re buying. You don’t need multiple policies. One good policy is enough.

Groups join to advance a better measure for the cost of aging The National Council on Aging, in collaboration with Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston, is launching the Equity In Aging Collaborative, a coalition of 25 national and local organizations that will advocate for a better way to measure the true cost of living as Americans age.

“Inflation is decimating the little financial security older adults might have coming out of the pandemic,” said Ramsey Alwin, NCOA President and CEO. He further stated,“But even before that, the federal poverty level failed to reflect older adults’ real needs to age with dignity.

The Equity in Aging Collaborative will work to ensure that the programs millions of people rely on actually keep pace with the costs of aging in America.”

Developed by the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston, the Elder Index is a measure of the income older adults need to meet their basic needs and age in place with dignity, factoring in household size, geography, housing, health care, transportation, food and other daily essentials.

The collaborative will advocate for the adoption of the Elder Index and for improving the standard of living measures used to determine eligibility for programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, taxes, food assistance and housing support.

“All too often, discussions of economic security lay blame on individuals and their inability to ‘save for retirement.’ Most of us, however, work hard throughout our lives,” said Mary O’Donnell, President of RRF Foundation for Aging. She further stated, “Despite this, financial struggles in later life are distressingly common. These result from larger economic forces beyond our control, systemic inequities, and an insufficient safety net.

Poking through the past: controversial presidents %\ 720 02552: 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV There are several presidents students of history should study to understand what made America the dominant global nation. Today’s young people, for the most part, pay little attention to history and take for granted America’s position in the world.

It was no accident how we got here. Along the way there was a lot of kicking and screaming, name calling and even threats of “impeachment.” The nation’s White House has been occupied by some rather controversial figures.

While the 45th White House occupant, President Donald Trump, was an easy “love him or hate him,” he wasn’t much different than President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt, the turn of the 20th century president who found himself in the Oval Office after the assassination of President William McKinley.

Roosevelt, a Republican, believed in a strong Navy. He had the Navy’s Great White Fleet circle the globe to demonstrate our nation’s growing power. T.R. established his Big

Stick foreign policy — “Walk softly but carry a big stick.”

He oversaw the historic and controversial building of the Panama Canal that connected the Atlantic to the Pacific and cut east-west sea travel time in half.

T.R. was shunted into the vice presidency by the Republicans to get rid of him. As governor of New York, he had been such a thorn to old-guard GOP politicians, they wanted to put him where they thought he couldn’t do any harm.

It backfired. Once in the presidency, T.R. created havoc in both government and business with a vast variety of reforms. Among other monikers, he became known as the Trust Buster.

Franklin D. Roosevelt has been called America’s greatest president. He served more than 12 years, guiding the nation through the dark years of the 1930s Great Depression into five years of World War II. Dozens of books have been written about FDR, making his presidency the pivotal time of the 20th century.

Many of his policies and actions, such as Social Security, were challenged in the courts and remain a subject of con-

troversy. But, to date, no one has returned their monthly checks.

Arguably, one of our best chief executives was Harry S. Truman. During the 20th century, he was the only high school graduate to become president. Known among detractors as “His Accidency,” Truman became president in 1945, when Roosevelt died a few weeks into his fourth term.

As vice president, Truman wasn’t told about the $2 billion atomic bomb project until he took over the presidency. Five months later, he made the decision to drop two bombs on Japan. It remains one of history’s most crucial, and controversial, decisions.

The Cold War began with Truman and lasted for more than 40 years until President Reagan caused the Soviet Union to collapse trying to keep up militarily. Staunchly anti-Communist, Reagan dedicated himself to ending the Cold War. Richard Nixon was great on foreign affairs, but dishonest domestically.

If you supported and defended, or were upset, confused, baffled and dismayed

with former President Trump, you might try spending a few hours studying President Andrew Jackson, arguably our most controversial of presidents.

During the War of 1812, Jackson led a force of inexperienced volunteers against overwhelming British forces to win the Battle of New Orleans. He had at least two duels during his tumultuous life and was the only president to serve in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson, a title he gave himself, was committed to representing and protecting the Common Man, a banner to be carried by several future chief executives. As president between 1829 and 1837, Jackson might have been the closest we’ve had to a dictator.

Jackson changed history by setting the executive branch on an equal footing with Congress by assuming the ability to shape law and government policies.

He believed the presidency should have broad authority and was widely criticized for expanding its power. Like others, he was known for rewarding his supporters with

7(''< 5226(9(/7 government jobs. The threat of his impeachment kept clouding over the Capitol.

During his watch, both the economy and the Native American population suffered.

He was responsible for moving the Native Americans from their traditional homelands in the East to the Oklahoma territory. This movement became known as the Trail of Tears.

The placement of Jackson on the $20 bill is ironic. He vehemently opposed paper money while attempting to destroy the National Bank.

Amelia Island embraces the past %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV It’s a town time forgot. Or maybe it just refused to move forward.

Serene and unpretentious, Amelia Island remains in the 1900s, reveling in its long, colorful history, quite aware it no longer has to prove anything to the rest of the world.

Therein lies the charm of this tiny stretch of land, 13 miles long and 2 miles wide, just off the northeastern tip of Florida.

Most visitors come for the beautiful beaches, award-winning golf and tennis facilities, luxurious resorts and other accoutrements of world class vacation destinations.

The main attraction for me is the seaport village of Fernandina Beach, where a sense of Victorian splendor still abounds. Barely touched by T-shirt shops and cellphone stands, the town pays homage to its elegant past.

Also absent is the caterwaul of

car horns. They’re just not there.

The downside is drivers stop their cars in the middle of the street to chat with a friend. But no one seems to mind.

The island got this way starting around the year 1000 when Native Americans crossed the water to settle on it.

The first of eight flags was planted on the island’s soil in 1562 by a French Huguenot explorer. Just three years later, it was replaced by the Spanish flag when the French were chased off the island.

The island got its present name in 1702 when James Oglethorpe raised the British flag and christened it in honor of Princess Amelia, daughter of King George II. As the only territory in the United States to have seen rule under eight flags, Amelia Island retains many of their influences, from French, Spanish and British to pirates, patriots and Confederates. Amelia Island Continued from page 16 up as “the French visited, the Spanish developed, the English named and the Americans tamed,” conveniently overlooking its prominent position as a pirates’ playground during the early 1800s.

Its flag history is convoluted, but simply goes like this: Oglethorpe’s flag was negotiated with the Spanish for planting in a sliver of the island and replaced by a Patriot’s Flag when the Spanish apparently were thrown off the island in 1812. The Green Cross of Florida flew for a few months when a small group tried to oust the Spanish again.

Then the white-and-bluecheckered Mexican Revolutionary Flag was planted until it was replaced by the National Flag of the Confederacy in 1861. That was replaced a year later by Old Glory It was hailed as “The Queen of Summer Resorts” by American Resorts magazine in 1896.

Shortly after, the island began losing its tourist base to other destinations, and mass modernization bypassed the island, a disguised blessing that allowed Amelia to remain an authentic Victorian seaport village.

Street after street and house after house enchant, charm and captivate visitors, be they

on guided tours, informal strolls or aiming a golf cart.

Most of the homes, ablaze in multiple shades of tans and turquoise and mints and mauves, sport some strange appendage on the roof alternately identified as a turret, cupola, gazebo or belvedere.

Wraparound porches adorned with decorative balustrades and whimsically designed ginger-breading give each structure its personal charm and distinction.

Hospitality gushes through every lush towel and handdesigned window treatment of Hoyt House, a 1905 canary yellow and periwinkle blue Victorian dollhouse motherhenned by owners Todd and Jamie Cohen. Recapturing the tranquility of the Victorian era is unavoidable as you stroll the resplendent garden, stop for a wistful moment at the gazebo, sway softly on the porch swing or sprawl out beneath the 300-year-old oak. Sipping a mint julep is optional.

For an even grander step backwards, drop by the Florida House Inn, whose 1857 origin makes it the oldest tourist hotel in Florida. Keep an eye out for one of innkeeper Diane Warrick’s prize quilts, which may be found adorning beds, walls, sofas and occasionally other unexpected objects.

The former watering hole to Carnegies, Rockefellers and duPonts, as well as the shrimpers and seamen who dominated the port city, is now the tavern of choice for tourists, locals and

shrimpers and seamen who still frequent Amelia Harbor.

Amelia Island’s thriving shrimp industry is another throwback to its glory days.

The birthplace of the shrimping industry still earns accolades as more than 2 million pounds of shrimp cross Fernandina docks each year.

A walk by the harbor at sunset captures the essence of Amelia Island. The tall masts of the shrimp boats are lined up, silhouetted against the sinking sun, further testimony that the island remains unwilling to give up its past.

natural sites. That’s probably because there’s no big sign, no arrows and no flashing lights to let one know to slow down for the entrance. It’s basically a narrow break in the trees and underbrush with a short gravel drive.

In addition, there’s no spacious visitor’s center staffed by knowledgeable state naturalists with hands-on displays, photos and maps. There are no restrooms and the tiny grass and gravel parking area off County Road 375 South is easy to miss.

There is, however, a sign at the trailhead that welcomes visitors and clearly states that the preserve is open from dusk to dawn every day and that no bikes and motorized vehicles are allowed. Neither is rock climbing or rappelling.

It’s primarily for hiking, bird watching and photography.

Quiet descends in just a few steps, the sun is pretty much blocked out, civilization seems miles away and the only sounds are those of calling birds and buzzing insects.

Endless entertainment on Aruba’s De Palm Island %\ )<//,6 +2&.0$1 0DWXUH /LIH )HDWXUHV I’ve always envied my scuba-diving friends who describe their colorful underwater world full of coral reefs and magical inhabitants of the sea. I’ve snorkeled but it’s not the same.

Now, although I remain uncertified as a diver, I have an idea of what the majesty is all about, thanks to my SNUBA experience at Aruba’s De Palm Island.

For the uninitiated, SNUBA is a cross between scuba and snorkeling.

Unencumbered by the heavy accoutrements of scuba divers who have air tanks on their back allowing them to roam freely 60 feet below the surface, SNUBA participants simply have fins and a mask similar to snorkelers.

But the mask is attached to an oxygen supply that allows them to dive 10 feet to 20 feet below the surface and explore much more than is usually accessible to the average snorkeler.

I was up close and personal with the coral moonscape and the multitude of multi-colored residents that call it home.

Trigger fish, trumpets, sergeant major fish, blue parrots, butterfly fish, “The list is so long it would take me a whole day to tell you,” my instructor claimed. At one point, he sent me to the bottom to look underneath a big coral formation where a puffer fish was hiding.

All this barely touches the surface, so to speak, of what De Palm Island has to offer.

An all-inclusive day trip is just a five-minute ferry ride away. It offers a smorgasbord of food and fun.

Your ticket gets you unlimited snorkeling tours with free gear, an impressive water park for the kids, exhilarating water slides for the kid in you, banana boat rides galore, as much food and drink as you can handle and salsa lessons. You see a lot of flamingoes in the Caribbean. They’re usually in the form of mailboxes, lawn decorations or home décor. On De Palm,

they’re there in the flesh and feather to entertain. These long-legged pink birds roam their own sandy habitat at their leisure.

De Palm Island not only offers SNUBA, one of 56 such operations worldwide, but also Sea Trek, which has the same number of opportunities around the globe. But to have them both in the same place is highly rare.

So what’s Sea Trek? You don a huge helmet with a breathing apparatus and walk along a soft sea bottom 10 feet to 15 feet below the surface following certain caveats. Remain vertical at all times, walk and breathe, yawn to equalize pressure, hold on to the handrails, and never look down.

The preserve is bordered

by Snake Creek, which feeds into Big Walnut Creek. It was designated a State Nature Preserve in 1988 and is a registered National Natural Landmark. It’s unique because of its steep sandstone cliffs and its lush fern-filled ravines, hence the name Fern Cliff. In addition, the preserve contains a mesic upland hardwood forest full of huge oak, beech, ash, hickory, sugar maple, wild cherry and tulip trees that provide a thick overhead canopy. Mesic refers to a type of habitat with a moderate to well-balanced supply of moisture. It’s a term used to describe the amount of water in a habitat.

The understory of the forest contains dogwood, hydrangea, paw paw and green

brier, along with a large array of herbaceous plants and a profusion of ferns and bryophytes, which are the little flowerless mosses and liverworts that cover the ground.

The place is truly a botanist’s floral paradise.

Early in the 20th century a commercial mining company extracted sandstone from the cliffs, crushed it onsite and delivered it to a bottle manufacturing plant in Terra Haute. The material from this quarry was the source for the first greenish glass that made the Coca Cola bottles so recognizable. What’s left of the abandoned crushing mill still remains in the sandstone canyon.

Getting there is convoluted to say the least. The journey begins at the courthouse square in downtown Greencastle. Head south on Jackson Street for a block and then turn west (right) onto Walnut Street. In four miles, cross over Big Walnut Creek and

The divers accompanying our small group were spreading food everywhere, which attracted the fish for us to pet. Lots of fish — yellowtail snapper, blue parrot, sergeant major, filefish, grouper, sea urchin, damsel fish — there’s that day-long list again.

All this was caught on video and, to round out the results, we pretended to drink a bottle of wine and to drive an underwater vehicle. Prodding the Past —

She was an original with treason because he was of British ancestry and naturalization to American colonial citizenship was not recognized. He was imprisoned and died at Old Mill Prison in England.

In May 1783, she married John Claypoole, who had met Joseph Ashburn in the English Old Mill Prison. It was Claypoole who informed her of her husband’s death in prison. The Claypoole couple would have five daughters.

In 1793, her mother, father, and sister all died in a severe yellow fever epidemic. And in 1817, after two decades of poor health, John Claypoole died.

She continued her upholstery business for another decade and retired to the home of her second daughter, Susanna, in Abington Township of Montgomery County, Pa. Her eldest daughter, Clarissa, took over her upholstery business back in Philadelphia.

She became blind and spent her last three years living with her middle daughter, Jane, in rapidly growing and industrializing Philadelphia.

Betsy Ross Claypoole died Jan. 30, 1836, at the age of

%(76< 5266 )/$* 84, some 60 years after the Declaration of Independence.

She was survived by her five daughters and one sister, Hannah Griscom Levering, who died less than a year later.

While the Betsy Ross House is one of the most-visited tourist sites in Philadelphia, whether she lived there or not is still a matter of historical dispute. Her body was first interred at the Free Quaker burial grounds on North Fifth Street in Philadelphia.

tennial, Philadelphia city leaders ordered her remains moved to the courtyard of the Betsy Ross House.

However, cemetery workers found no remains under her tombstone. Bones found elsewhere in the family plot were deemed to be hers and moved to the current grave now visited by tourists at the Betsy Ross House.

While her home has become an historic shrine, the flag she put together in her modest upholstery shop has become an official national symbol.

In case you missed this particular class in third grade, let me tell you about a true American patriot: Elizabeth Griscom “Betsy” Ross.

She was born Jan. 1, 1752, and was an American seamstress/upholsterer whose work is still admired throughout the world.

She’s credited with making the first American flag, known today as the “Betsy Ross flag.”

According to Ross family history, Gen. George Washington and two congressional members visited Mrs. John Ross in 1776. They showed her a sketch done by Washington. It was a drawing of a flag with 13 stars in a field of blue situated in a circle above 13 red and white strips.

Ross had been making flags for the Pennsylvania navy during the American Revolution so making a united colony standard was no difficult task.

In 1775, the Pennsylvania naval committee headed

by Benjamin Franklin and George Ross (uncle of John Ross) ordered the construc-

tion of gunboats that would eventually need flags.

The American Revolutionary War broke out when Betsy and John had been married for only two years.

John was assigned to guard munitions and, according to one legend, was killed by a gunpowder explosion.

As a 24-year-old widow, Betsy Ross continued working in the upholstery business repairing uniforms and making tents, blankets, stuffing paper tube cartridges with musket balls for the Continental Army and flags.

There is speculation Betsy Ross was the “beautiful young widow” who distracted Hessian Gen. Carl von Donop in Mount Holly, N. J., after the Battle of Iron Works Hill.

This kept von Donop’s forces out of the crucial turningof-the-tide Battle of Trenton on the morning of Dec. 26, 1776, when the Hessian and British troops were defeated after Washington crossed the Delaware River.

She married her second husband, mariner Joseph Ashburn, on June 15, 1777.

A year later, his ship was captured by a Royal Navy frigate and he was charged
